UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY SCHOOL OF RURAL HEALTH The University of Sydney’s School of Rural Health was established in Dubbo in 2001 with the dual aims of teaching medicine in a rural setting and strengthening the rural medical workforce. They spend up to one year of their four year degree with us taught by health practitioners throughout central and western NSW. Each year around 60 Sydney medical program students attend our campuses in Dubbo and Orange. The school employs over 40 staff and more than 200 local doctors and physicians as tutors. We are a long day care centre providing care and education to children from six weeks to six years of age. Rainbow Cottage closes for two weeks over Christmas with our last day coinciding with the end of the last school term. Dubbo is located on the junction of three major highways and services a geographic area one third the size of NSW. Getting around Dubbo is a breeze with simple-to-navigate roads, painless parking and easily accessible public transport. Council determines the combination of rates, charges, fees and pricing policies needed to fund the services it provides to the community. This is called a revenue policy. The revenue policy contains a rating structure that determines which rates and charges you have to pay and how they will be calculated. You can view the Revenue Policy at dubbo.nsw.gov.au/YourCouncil/rates-fees-charges.html Who do I contact if a tree needs to be maintained on my street or a park needs to be mowed? Council protects and maintains more than 14,500 street trees in the Dubbo urban area and manages 821 hectares of parkland throughout Dubbo. If you have a request for mowing, planting, pruning or removal of trees on Council lands contact Council’s Customer Service Centre (02) 6801 4000. The area will be assessed and any necessary work will be carried out by our staff. RANGER SERVICES Where do I take stray animals? The Dubbo City Animal Shelter is located on Boothenba Road and can be contacted on (02) 6882 1934. The Shelter is a safe haven for lost and stray cats and dogs, keeping them protected until their owner (or a new owner) can be found. Fees apply for the release of impounded animals and animals must be registered before release. Suitable unclaimed animals are re-homed through sales at the Shelter. SEWERAGE SERVICES WATER SUPPLY ROAD NETWORK What do I do if I think there is a leak on my property? Take a reading after the last person has gone to the toilet or brushed their teeth at night. Take a second reading before anyone uses any water in the morning. If no one has used any water overnight and the reading has changed, then you know there is a leak. Contact a plumber to locate and repair the leak. Who do I report road, footpath and cycleway repairs to? For road, footpath and cycleway maintenance repairs please contact Council’s Customer Service Centre (02) 6801 4000. To report street lighting outages or faults contact Essential Energy on 13 23 91 or for traffic light faults please contact Roads and Maritime Services Transport Management Centre on 131 700. What do I do if my water supply is interrupted? Council provides the City with a 24-hour emergency paging service. For water pressure, breaks and repairs call Council’s Customer Service Centre (02) 6801 4000. Residents will be connected to Council’s pager service contractor. The operator will ask questions such as the nature of the problem and the address so as to expedite dispatch of a service crew as soon as possible. WASTE AND RECYCLING COLLECTION When are my general waste and recycling bins collected? Council manages the waste and recycling services of Dubbo and its villages. For households within the kerbside collection area, your garbage bins are serviced weekly and recycling bins are serviced fortnightly on the same day of the week as your garbage bin. A map of collection days and a list of recyclables can be viewed at dubbo.nsw.gov.au/CouncilServices/ WasteandRecycling.html What do I do if I missed my bin collection? You can drop your recycling for free to Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre on Cooba Road and JR Richards and Sons on Fitzroy Street in Dubbo. There are also recycling drop off points in Wongarbon, Ballimore and Eumungerie. You can drop domestic waste at the Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre on Cooba Road for a charge per utility or small trailer. The Centre operates 8am to 5pm weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends and can be contacted on (02) 6887 3382. What do I do if there is a sewage overflow? Council maintains and repairs the treatment plants, pipes and pumping stations that supply water to and take sewage from households in the urban areas of Dubbo. Council is responsible for the sewerage pipes up to the first pipe joint within your property. If you notice a sewage overflow contact Council’s Customer Service Centre (02) 6801 4000. HUMAN ENVIRONMENT Who do I report pollution to? Concerns about pollution should be reported to Council’s Customer Service Centre on (02) 6801 4000, the Environment Protection Authority Pollution Hotline on 131 555 or in the case of an emergency the Fire Brigade on 000. Is Council responsible for inspecting public premises? Council is responsible for ensuring food outlets, beauty salons, pools and other registered public premises comply with statutory requirements to ensure health and safety standards are upheld at all times.
