From the Principal
PBL Mascot Competition
Our mascots are being exhibited in
the foyer of the Library until next
Friday 28 March 2014. A copy of the
display has been included in this
edition of Jumbunna so that as
many parents and community
members can see the mascots
before voting on Wednesday and Thursday 2-3 April
2014.
The finalists are: Perc (Percy) the Macquarie Perch,
Gordon the Sheep, Aquila the Wedge-tailed Eagle,
Honore the Lion, Captain PBL (Pebble) and Mr Wiggles
the Bookworm.
Updating Information
It is important for parents and carers to update their
contact phone numbers and addresses with the school.
This allows us to contact you if there is an emergency or
other matter that requires prompt attention. Incorrect
information can also affect the payment of Back to School
allowances. Parents and caregivers must also notify the
school of any medical conditions so that if illness or
accidents occur your child can receive the best medical
treatment available. Please contact the school during
school hours on 6847 4438 to amend your details.
Adult Education
A number of vacancies still exist in our comprehensive
Adult Education program. This program is highly
successful so if you are interested in completing
Preliminary and HSC subjects listed below please phone
the front office on 6847 4438 during business hours.
Vacancies still exist in Hospitality on a Tuesday midmorning, Ceramics on a Wednesday night and Adult
Literacy and Numeracy on a Wednesday mid-morning.
Attendance
The school is concentrating on improving student
attendance this term. There are substantial benefits for
sending your child to school every day. International
research clearly shows that students who regularly attend
school get the maximum benefit from school and optimise
their life choices. They develop skills and attitudes that
help them to be successful in later life. These include
self-discipline, punctuality, being organised and being
able to stick to routines. By attending school every day
children can make friends and learn to maintain
19 March 2014
friendships and relationships over a length of time.
Finally, the more you attend, the more you learn.
I am asking every family to support the school in raising
the awareness that good attendance has significant
advantages for every student, parent and member of the
local Warren community.
ANZAC DAY SCHOOL SERVICE
Our Annual School ANZAC Day Service will be held on
Thursday 10 April 2014 at 10.00am. All official guests will
be welcomed after the service to join our staff for
refreshments.

Issue 2 – Term 4 – Week 4
All parents, carers, family and friends are warmly
welcome to come along and join in as we celebrate our
wonderful students and their progress.
Deadly Vibe Winner
We were notified last week that Andrew Smith, Year 4,
was the winner of the November 2013 Deadly Vibe Maths
competition. Each month students are encouraged to
enter the Maths competition during their Maths lesson
and Ms Oates collects the entries and sends them to the
magazine. The first correct entry drawn out each month,
Australia wide, is the winner. Andrew was ecstatic to
receive his bag of goodies as was Danika Swindle at the
end of last year when she was announced as the
October winner. Well done to all the students who enter
each month and good luck. With these wins more
students are now keen to enter.

winning bag of goodies.
Adam Hill presenting as Adamriginal
Last Wednesday our students had the opportunity to
attend a performance by Adam Hill who is a highly
acclaimed aboriginal performer. Adam entertained the
students with stories of his life and his musical talents
with a variety of Aboriginal instruments and some
basketball skills.

How to Make a Robot Creature
By Summer Ensor
I made a creature robot and the first thing I had to do was
a mind map and write down as many land and sea
animals I could think of in a short time.
I then had to choose one land and one sea animal and
write down their characteristics. I chose a bird (feathers,
beak and wings) and a shark (fin, tail and sharp teeth).
I named my creature – RABBOPUS.
Next I had to draft a design of my creature, and it looks
like this;
When I had finished my design I was given one sheet of
paper and some sticky tape and had to make a rough
prototype of my creature. I could only tear and scrunch
up the paper and use stick tape to create my model.
This part of the design process was to see if there were
any design flaws.
Finally I was able to make my model and this time I was
able to use a small piece of colour paper, sticky, scissors,
coloured pop sticks and pipe cleaners.
Once I had completed my final model I was given a watch
battery and charger. I was shown how to attach the
battery to my model.
As soon as I attached the battery and put my creature
robot down on a hard flat surface, it spun in circles and
walked around.
It was great fun and I was able to take my Rabbopus
home.

On Thursday 13 March, selected students in Years 4/5/6
had the opportunity to participate in a range of activities
that involved using cutting edge tools such as 3D printers
and robotics as well as taking part in hands on activities
including sketching ideas that came to life as robotic
creatures. During this 90 minute workshop the students
were highly engaged in inter-curricular thinking,
collaboration, teamwork and problem solving through
experimentation. The workshop was very successful and
all students had a robot creature to take home at the end
of the day. Fantastic!
Method
Firstly, using a piece of A4 paper, I had to brainstorm and
write down as many land and sea animals as I could.
Below are some examples of a recount and a procedural
recount by students relating to their workshop
experience.
Then I had to choose one of each and design a creature.
My creature was a CROCOPHANT (CROCO –
Crocodile/PHANT – Elephant)

Primary Prefects
Coming up on Thursday 20 March we are holding a cup
cake day where students will be able to buy a cup cake
at recess and/or lunch. This our first fundraiser for the
year and proceeds will go to Stewart House.
Then using just one piece of A4 paper and sticky tape I
had to make a model of my „Crocophant‟ in 3D. This was
the first draft of my 3D creature robot.
I then was able to use the other resources such as,
colour paper, pop-sticks, pipe cleaners and scissors to
make my final prototype.
This took a bit longer as I needed to get it right so it
would work.
Once I had finished my final 3D model, I was able to
attach a battery and it walked backwards and spun in
little circles.
I had fun participating in this workshop.
How I made a Robot Creature
By Tsharlia Shepherd
We had to brainstorm all the land and sea animals we
could think of then choose two and write down each of
their characteristics.
I chose a shark (fin, tail, sharp teeth, angry) and a snail
(shell, slimy body, antenna, beady eyes) and called it a
„SHAIL‟.ghg
Then I drew a front, top and side on view of it.
I was given a piece of white paper and some sticky tape
and made a 3D model to see what would work and what
wouldn‟t.
This is my „Shail‟
On Thursday 3 April is our first disco for 2014…WEIRD
AND WACKY…is the theme. So get out that costume
that has been sitting around waiting for this opportunity to
brush it down and wear to this disco.
Cost is $1 per student. Students are given a lucky door
ticket when they arrive and throughout the evening many
prizes are given out for a variety of activities and dancing
styles as well as costumes. The evening begins at 5pm
and ends at 7pm. All students must be picked up from the
hall by their parent/carer at the end of the disco.
Then on Wednesday 9 April we‟ll celebrate Easter with
our annual Easter hat parade and family picnic lunch.
Keep your eyes peeled for a special lunch deal for that
day by the canteen. Start thinking about your hat now
and don‟t leave it until the last minute.
Gobondery/NARRAF T-Ball & Softball Gala Day –
Peak Hill
Some of our primary students will be travelling to Peak
Hill on 21 March 2014 to participate in the annual T-Ball
& Softball gala day. Unfortunately we are unable to field
junior & senior boys cricket teams.

Mobile maker space excites
Maya Barclay, Benjamin Barnett, Mackenzie Pardy show off the
mini creatures they created with workshop presenters Sam
Nikolsy and Jethro Pugh.
Art, craft and science converged for the lucky students of
years 4 to 6 at Warren Central last week.
Two Melbourne based industrial designers brought their
travelling “mobile maker space” workshop, Maker
Machine, to the school; bringing the industrial design
st
process to life and demonstrating cutting edge 21
century industrial tools.
After exploring the role of industrial designers, workshop
presenters Sam Nikolsky and Jethro Pugh enthralled
everyone as teacher Miss Kiefel modelled for a 3D
camera taking thousands of photos of her from a number
of angles. To everyone‟s amazement a 3D printer
produced a model of her using the data collected from
the photos.
One of the themes of the workshop was how designers
often find new applications for things that already exist.
To demonstrate this, students were guided through a
process of combining a pencil, battery and small speaker
to test whether a circuit was conductive to electricity.
The second half of the program, billed as a “rapid design
workshop” involved taking the students through the whole
design process; from idea generation, brainstorming and
mind mapping to creating a prototype. The students‟ final
products from this process were tiny creatures with
batteries and motors attached to enable them to move.
Sam and Jethro, the presenters and brains behind the
show, came up with the idea of a travelling workshop as
a way of sharing their passion for making things and to
bring emerging technologies out into the wider
community. If the amount of excitement generated during
the workshop is anything to go by, it‟s quite possible a
few young Warren Central students may have a future in
industrial design in their sights.

Science and Engineering Challenge
The Western Plains (Dubbo) Science and Engineering
Challenge is the initiative of University of Newcastle with
the cooperation of the Rotary Club Of Dubbo. The idea
behind the day long competition is to generate interest
and positive experiences in Science and Engineering,
especially in Year 9-10 students, so that they consider a
career as well as make the requisite subject selection in
Senior high school such as Chemistry and Physics.
The competition was held on Thursday 13 March at the
Dubbo Racecourse where 32 enthusiastic students from
Warren competed against 10 other schools in eight
different activities. Each group of four students had
different colour codes which represented the activities
they would take part in.
Activities included ElectraCity, Flight, Who gets the
Water? Stringways, Mission to Mars, Eco-Habitech,
Catapult and Bridge. Each activity had its own challenges
but students strived to show exemplary behaviour and
engagement in the activities throughout the day.
The next day we received this very encouraging email
from the coordinator Lyn Smith.

Issue 2 – Term 4 – Week 4
Dear Teachers and chaperones,
This is to send you my compliments and those of the
organisers about the way your students behaved today.
They were mostly engaged in their tasks, well behaved,
considerate and respectful of Challenge staff and other
students, well-mannered in the long lunch queue and
cleaned up with hardly any fuss. It made the day most
enjoyable for everyone.
Congratulations to you and your students. Please pass
this and our thanks on to your students.
Lyn Smith
I would like to thank the participating students for being
respectful and responsible on the day as well as the
parents for encouraging and supporting their children to
participate in such activities. A special thanks to Dianne
Hamilton for helping organise, Allison Fuller in aiding
supervision and Jack James the bus driver for driving us
safely to Dubbo and back to school.

Personalised Learning Plans (PLP’s – Aboriginal
students)
Learning & Support Plans (L&SP – Non-Aboriginal
students)
PLP‟s and L&SP‟s are individual plans where student‟s
specific learning needs are identified and addressed.
They are developed from teacher, student and parental
input.
Learning Plans are a valuable guide in your child‟s
education and aim to allow your child to reach their full
potential. They highlight your child‟s strengths (which can
be further developed) as well as areas of need that
require support. Longer term goals are also indicated,
and factors identified in assisting your child to reach
these goals. Resources and support personnel are also
recognised. The contributions of students are imperative,
so they can develop an ownership and responsibility for
their education. For parents the plans form a
communication platform whereby the school and family
work together to ensure the children reach their personal
goals.
