Cowra Public School NEWS Term 1, Week 5 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents It has been a very hot week and with the extreme temperatures we remind parents on the need to ensure that all children have water and their hat at school. This week the teachers have been allowing extra drink breaks. The new turf areas have definitely helped in the playgrounds compared to the asphalt surfaces. Last Friday Cowra Public School hosted the annual Cowra District Swimming Carnival. Mrs Duncan coordinated an amazing day that saw four out of the six age champions going to Cowra Public School children. Our age Champions were Mac Webster in the Senior Boys, Cailin McKay, Senior Girls, Jake Roberts 11 Years Boys and Jada Buchan Junior Girls. Twenty eight students represented Cowra Public on the day as individuals but joined together to form our relay teams and again had great success with several winning on the day. We started the week in front of the camera with the school photos being taken by Cliff Dykes Photography. Cliff and Kay travel extensively throughout NSW with their business and their comments stating that our school was one of the most lovely schools, in the way the children conduct themselves, their manners, the pride in uniform and the outstanding organisation by the teachers was greatly received. Any student who was not here on the day will be photographed on Monday, 14 March. This week the school had students participate in a PAT-R test that identifies the level of reading and comprehension ability of all students. This will continue into next week with all students in Years 3-6 participating. The results of this test, are to assist teachers in assessment and on- going delivery of curriculum aligned with the child’s ability. Last night the school held the first monthly P&C meeting of the year with the planned school events being outlined to parents. The P&C will hold a number of events this year including discos, movie nights as well as a Bingo night later in the year. The P&C always strongly support and supply the school with resources that benefit the opportunities to all children. As mentioned before, the school Canteen will be running ‘Meal Deal’ days starting Tuesday, next week. The first deal with be a wonderful beef mince Noodle Box, a bottle of chilled water and a frozen juice all for only $6. This is great value and a very special treat. Parents are requested to pre order for the day and an order form can be found on page 8 of this newsletter. I encourage all parents to take the opportunity to support our great canteen initiative. For anyone who has been at an assembly over the last 10 months and has endured my voice or lack there of, I apologise. I have been able to secure treatment to fix my throat in the next few weeks and will be taking a short period of time from Week 7. Mrs Cole will be relieving for me. INFANTS PARENT/ TEACHER INTERVIEWS Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 classes will be holding their Parent/ Teacher interviews on Wednesday, 9 March. The interviews will be of ten minutes dura tion. These interviews form one aspect of student evaluation and reporting. The interviews will be from 3.45pm until 8.30pm and will be held in individual classrooms. A written report will be sent home towards the end of Term 2. Notes have been sent home with times. These notes need to be returned to the school with your preferred times for the interview. Page 3 AUSSIE OF THE MONTH ~ FEBRUARY Towen Schick ~ Primary James Wallace ~ Infants Towen is pictured with his mother, sister and little brothers along with the presenter, Jeremy Ryan representing Mr Embroidery James is pictured with his parents and sister along with the presenter, Jeremy Ryan representing Mr Embroidery Towen is a very independent, responsible and mature student. He completes all class tasks promptly and maintains a high standard of work. Towen is considerate towards all members of the school community. His behaviour demonstrates a thorough understanding of the expectations of our PBL program. James is a very caring, extremely thoughtful and helpful student. James stays on task and happily completes all work to a very high standard. He has enthusiastically participated in school and community events. James has beautiful manners and always shows respect for his family, school, friends and teachers. James is a wonderful role model to all Infants students. STAGE 2 EXCURSION - HYDE PARK BARRACKS EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Planning is well under way for the Stage Two overnight excursion to the Hyde Park Barracks. This excursion will take place in two groups (Group 1: Tuesday, 21/Wednesday, 22 June: Group 2: Wednesday,22/Thursday, 23 June. WESTERN REGION BAND CAMP Last week I went to Western Region Band Camp at Lake Burrendong. Mrs Wright was there as the double reed tutor. Every morning before we played our instruments we had breathing gym. At breathing gym we did breathing exercises like breathing in for 4 counts and out for 16 counts. After breathing gym we had rehearsals until lunch time with a short break in between. Then after lunch we had recreation activities. The activities included a giant slip and slide, archery, raft building and pool games. Then we had another rehearsal until dinner. The excursion involves travel by bus to Sydney, a ferry trip to Goat Island and a walk around the Rocks area. We will be staying overnight at the Hyde Park Barracks, Hyde Park, Sydney. Each day we played our instruments for about five hours. The cost of the excursion will be approximately $100.00 per student. The final cost will depend upon the number of students who attend. A maximum of forty students can be included in each group. I made lots of new friends and had a great time and hopefully can go back next year with some Cowra Public School students. The excursion is open to all students in Years 3 and 4, however, any students who do not show that they can be relied upon to act safely and responsibly may be excluded from the excursion. As soon as costing has been finalised, a more detailed note will be sent home with the itinerary and payment plans. Please complete the expression of interest sent home last week showing whether your child will or will not be participating in the excursion, and return it to your child’s teacher no later than Friday, 4 March 2016. Mrs Kathryn Macnamara Assistant Principal Stage 2 At the camp there were about sixty children (the most they have ever had). At the end of the week the kids did a concert for the parents. If your child is: 10 minutes late for school each day, that equals 7 days learning time lost for your child in the year! 1/2 hour late for school each day, that equals over 21 days, or 4 weeks, of learning time lost for your child! REMEMBER: CLASS BEGIN AT 9.10AM If your child is late to school, they must be signed in by AN ADULT and obtain a slip to give to their teacher. The sign in book can be found on the front counter of the school office - or ask at the desk. STAGE 3 LAP-A-THON Stage 3 will be holding a Lap-a-thon on Friday, 18 March. To attend, children should collect sponsorship before the lap-a-thon day. It will be a normal school day for pupils not able to participate. The program will be: 9.40am: Walk from school to the pool 10.00am: Children will change into swimming gear Swimming ability will be tested Commence lap-a-thon Strong swimmers will swim full laps Weaker swimmers swim at the shallow end of the pool 1.00pm Lunch 2.50pm Leave pool to return to school Students can wear mufti, a hat and sunscreen on the day. They will need to bring swimmers to change into at the pool. A BBQ lunch will be provided at no cost. Students will need to bring their own recess. A permission note will be sent home shortly and this needs to be filled in making sure you correctly identify your child’s swimming ability. There also will be a sponsorship form sent home. Any parental assistance with the BBQ preparation will be much appreciated. Entry into the pool will be $2.00 unless your child has a season pass. Stage 3 teachers PAYMENT NOW DUE: SCHOOL FEES - $40 per child (Family maximum $80) The prompt payment of school fees would be greatly appreciated. We keep fees to a minimum - $40 a child, which equates to approximately 20c a day. Funds raised are used to purchase classroom essentials such as exercise books, readers etc. BAND : $25 a term - Term 1 now due These funds are used to purchase musical instruments. PARENTS IN THE PLAYGROUND We welcome parents into our playground but please remember that if there is a concern within the playground speak to the teacher on duty, or the Principal, not directly to the students. Also please remember that there is NO supervision in either the Infants or Primary playgrounds until 8.40am. SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS Cliff and Kay Dykes would like to congratulate all the students on their exemplary behaviour when having their photographs taken on Monday. It made their job so much easier and they finished in record time. Thanks to all the teachers and students for their efforts on the day. The catch up day will be Monday, 14 March for those students who missed out on having their photographs taken. The students who had their photographs taken will receive their note with their shoot key number on Monday, 7 March. The shoot key will be activated on Tuesday, 8 March. BUSBY CAR PARK If your are dropping or picking up you child in Busby Car Park please escort them to and from the school gate. There have been a number of potential accidents involving students. The safety of all students and parents who use the Busby Car Park exit from the school is important so please take care in crossing the road and walking on the road area. Parents please be aware you should be holding your child’s hand if they are under 10 when crossing the road and please ensure that you do not let your children run in front or lag behind you in the parking area. No parent or the school wants an injury to any child in this area and ensuring the safety of our children is a joint effort. Users of the car park have reported their concerns and distress to the school. Page 6 SPORT PSSA DISTRICT SWIMMING CARNIVAL REGIONAL TEAM Congratulations to the Cowra Public School swimming team who performed so well at the District Carnival last Friday! Well done to those students who now go on to represent our District at the Western Region Carnival in Dubbo next Friday. Cowra Public School had a wonderful day in the pool and finished with four out of the six Age Champions - What an effort! A special thanks you to Mr Tom who put of tents at 7.00am and to Mr Buchan and Mr Scammell who put out the swimming club lane ropes in preparation for the carnival. Timekeeping duties were performed by a number of parent volunteers and that is greatly appreciated. Thank you again to Mrs Willis and Mrs Saxby for providing a delicious morning tea and to the pool staff for their support. Shavaughn Duncan PE/Sport DISTRICT CHAMPIONS The team is asked to meet at the Dubbo Aquatic and Leisure Centre near the Cowra District banner at 8.30am. Marshalling call is at 9.15am. Heats will commence at 9.30am. Cost is $3.00 for competitors; $3.00 for spectators; $3.00 unlimited pass-outs. All events are timed finals and place ribbons will be issued to competitors with the fastest 3 times. There will be NO BUS organised to take the children to the swimming venue and the responsibility to see that the child gets to and from Dubbo rests entirely with the parents. Shavaughn Duncan PE/Sport Stage 2 students have been invited to attend a Hockey Gala Day on Friday, 18 March from 10.00 - 2.30pm, at the Hockey/Soccer fields adjacent to the Boorowa Road. All students participating MUST HAVE A MOUTHGUARD AND SHIN PADS are also required. Students are able to purchase mouth guards from Mrs Duncan prior to the day for a cost of $5.00. A limited number of shin pads will also be available to borrow. Those children participating will come to school as per usual and will then walk to the Hockey Fields after roll call. All food and drink needs to be taken with them as as always a hat and sunscreen are essential. A teachers will accompany the students. Stage 3 students will be holding their Lap-a-thon on that day so this hockey day will be mainly for Stage 2 students.
