Term 3 Week 6 - Holman Place School
HOLMAN PLACE SCHOOL HOLMAN PLACE PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 3 WEEK 6, 2016 TERM 3, 2016 Newsletter Date 26 August 2016 From the Principal PBL Student of the Week Congratulations Mathew Woods We have experienced an extremely sad and difficult two weeks with the passing of one of our “school family members”. Although a terribly sad time, I felt so humbled by the response of our school community. I would like to personally thank parents and carers for the phone calls, messages and donations of cakes and slices that assisted the P&C with catering for Malakye’s wake, the response was truly overwhelming. Malakye was a much loved member of our school and the weeks and months ahead will have a void that will not be filled. We have the support of school councillors for our students, please let me know if you feel your child needs to access these services. Last week our students had the opportunity to visit Health Harold and the Life Education Van. As always, this proved to be a great hit amongst students and once again we will wait with anticipation for his visit again next year. Koalas and Goannas had been invited to join Koorawatha in a mini Olympics day, unfortunately we have had to postpone the event and it will now take place on Friday 9th September. As always it is great to join up with our friends from the small schools network. I am also pleased to hear the news that the Emus have been invited to a luncheon next week at Meals on Wheels are they are volunteers of this service. This is a great program that we are involved with and I think it is wonderful to see our kids giving to our community and being recognised for it. Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe Next week we are celebrating Book Week. I would like to invite families up to the school next Friday 2nd September from 10.15 for a 10.30 start. Our Mayor, Bill West is going to join us in reading a book to the students. We will be having a parade followed by a morning tea. We would love to see as many students as possible dress up as a character from a book for the day. We are looking forward to a great day to celebrate books and the value of reading with our kids. I look forward to seeing you next Friday. Page 2 HOLMAN PLACE PUBLIC SCHOOL Wombats It’s been a tough couple of weeks since our last newsletter. It was very heavy hearts that we said our goodbyes to Malakye Davison last week. I had the pleasure of teaching Malakye for a number of years and his upbeat, cheeky zest for life was something to be admired. We will miss Malakye as I am sure everyone that knew him will. Goodbye mate. On a more positive note we had the pleasure of witnessing the fly over of the Hercules C-130J aircraft last week. We parked up on Billygoat Hill with dozens of locals to witness the spectacle. The kids loved being so close to the giant of the sky and their was excitement all around after the fly by. Lastly I would like to thank the Kibbler family for their wonderful generosity in buying all of the little Wombats a Happy Meal for lunch. What a wonderful gesture of goodwill. The kids loved their treat. Thank you. Koalas Wow! What a busy and exciting time the Koalas have been having. With the recycled art competition, Father’s Day and the Cowra Show all fast approaching we are busy trying to get everything ready. We will keep you posted on more details as it gets closer! Jono, Dale, Mathew and Tom have been enjoying their reading program, with all four of them making huge improvements. Zahli and Jessica have been learning more sign language with Sue and I, so much that the rest of the Koalas have picked up on it too. This week we have been looking at Aboriginal paintings and artists and hope to paint some symbols on our rocks that we collected. We can’t wait to show you the finished product. We look forward to putting on display all of our hard work! Goannas The past fortnight has been a difficult time for the Goannas with the passing of our classmate and dear friend Malakye. Malakye was a valued member of the Goannas class and his passing leaves a massive hole in our hearts and our class. The Cowra Show is rapidly approaching and the class have been working hard to ensure their entries for this years show are ready for display. The Goannas will be displaying our boomerangs that we made during term 2 and some wonderful looking sheep that were made during art. Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe On Tuesday of week 6 our wonderful school cleaner, Geoff brought in his poddy lamb. The Goannas were given the opportunity to feed the lamb and even hold it. The class continues to work hard in the classroom and Miss Nat and I are very proud of their efforts. TERM 3, 2016 Page 3 Emus We have been very busy preparing some artworks for the Cowra Show. We have kept some of our artworks from earlier in the year and so far we have weaving and mosaics to show at the Cowra Show. This week we have been working on a recycled art project. We have had a trip to the Cowra recycle centre to find materials. We found recycled wood, bottle tops and wire. We have been threading bottle caps onto wire to make the word sorry. ‘Sorry’ By Justin Bieber is the song that we are basing our art work on. We have wrapped up our Olympics studies for the moment and we are looking forward to the start of the Paralympics in the coming weeks. As the weather is warming up please remember to pack a hat for your child. Have a good week. Kangaroos Last week saw a visit by Healthy Harold with the Life Education Van. The students enjoyed learning about personal hygiene, being safe and healthy foods. Tori Lee enjoyed seeing Harold, whilst Nicky, Nash and Austin help Harold by sharing their knowledge about healthy habits. The class began a major artwork for the Recycle Art Display that will be held in the coming week at Cowra Pool. Jakayla is continuing work experience at Royce’s Bakery with the support of Mr Lynch. Over the past weeks she has made Lamingtons, Donuts and Scones while also helping out staff at the bakery. In class we have been learning about conjunctions and how we join two ideas in a sentence. We wrote a mystery story and continued our personal protection learning. During class cooking we continue to make toasted sandwiches and learning about cleaning and using kitchen utensils.
