Museum Information
This annual report is for the period from July 1, 2005, through June 30, 2006.
Please note: Artworks appearing in this report may not always be on public view;
these works and more are always on view on the museum’s Web site, www.artsmia.org.
“Suddenly the MIA has big shoulders. It walks, metaphorically, with the kind of swagger,
authority and cultural weight associated with its counterparts in Chicago, Boston and
New York. Way too large to be taken in at one visit, the place holds an astonishing
amount of t0p-class art that seems to come from everywhere and everyone.”
—Mary Abbe, art critic, Star Tribune, July 16, 2006
A REMARKABLE YEAR The transformation you helped us achieve
While flipping pancakes at our Grand Opening Celebration in June, I marveled at the
people who were standing in line. There were Trustees and museum members, a Wall
Street Journal reporter, art dealers from New York and London, museum staff and
their families, and lots of neighbors, all eager to celebrate our new expansion.
It was a magical moment, and in many ways it crystallized a remarkable year.
It’s amazing to think of all we accomplished in
Fiscal Year 2005–06: the completion of our new
wing, the reinstallation of virtually every gallery,
new acquisitions for the permanent collection,
superb exhibitions, inspiring tours, and top-notch
educational programs. The list goes on and on.
These achievements were the culmination of years
of careful planning and hard work. Indeed, they
embody the collective vision of the museum’s
Trustees and staff, and position us to achieve an
even higher level of service to our community.
The MIA is one of the only major American
museums to offer free general admission. This
is vitally important to our mission. But in order
for us to continue to grow, we must find ways to
expand our membership, engage the next genera-

tion of community leaders, and work more closely
than ever with our philanthropic partners.
One crucial component of our plan for the future is completion of our Bring Art to
Life Campaign. We could not be more grateful for the extraordinary generosity of our
donors, but we continue to seek your support.
This is an exhilarating time for us. Thank you for being part of it.

Furthermore, we’ve re-installed our entire collection of old master paintings. We’ve expanded our

among the finest in the world.
Unquestionably, the recent expansion will have
a profound and enduring impact on the MIA for
generations to come.

been reorganized, the art re-hung. As a result, the paintings, sculpture, and prints that
adorn the MIA’s now 143 galleries seem to breathe more easily.”

exhibitions of works by contemporary Minnesotan
artists. These included a moving tribute to Gus
Gustafson, and “The Unicorn in Captivity,”
featuring large-scale paintings by Alexa Horochowski. Also, an online archive (www.artsmia.

MAEP exhibitions and the arts in Minnesota.

important ways.

AN ENORMOUS THANK-YOU The connections you help us deepen daily
Decades from now, museum leaders will look back at this year as a sparkling moment of
unprecedented generosity—generosity of inspiration, time, and funds—all to benefit this
unique community treasure we know as the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
It’s through the sincere commitment of dedicated supporters that we’ve been able to build
such a vital arts resource and enduring arts legacy for our community. Thousands of
schoolchildren and individuals benefit daily from the free general admission policy that
your support helps provide.
Thank you for demonstrating your commitment to critical museum priorities:
strengthening the museum’s operations, building its world-class collection, and bringing us
closer to the $100 million goal of our Bring Art to Life Campaign.
Thank you to the many museum members, corporate sponsors, and foundation partners
who have provided generous annual support of the museum during the past fiscal year.
In particular, we wish to acknowledge the citizens of Hennepin County through the
Park Museum Fund, the Minnesota State Arts Board supported by an appropriation by
the Minnesota State Legislature, the Institute for Museum and Library Services, and the
National Endowment for the Arts.
We also acknowledge Target, which in addition to its lead gift to the Bring Art to Life
Campaign, provided exceptionally generous support for our Grand Opening festivities
and the exhibition “The Surreal Calder.”
We’re grateful to you for caring so much about the museum and those who depend on
it for arts education and inspiration. I hope you have many opportunities to see and
experience the tremendous impact of your giving.
Welcome to this exciting new era!

Nearly 5,000 visitors attended the museum on July 14, 2005, the anniversary of Bastille Day, for the opening of the Grand Salon from the Hôtel
Gaillard de La Bouëxière. One of the most intact interiors from 18th-century Paris, this elegant period room was painstakingly conserved and
restored. Installation of the Grand Salon was entirely funded through the generosity of the Groves Foundation and Carolyn and Franklin Groves.
