PDK/Gallup Poll of the
Public’s Attitudes Toward the
Public Schools
Highly respected and widely followed by the media, the
PDK/Gallup Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward the Public Schools is a
trustworthy resource for families, education professionals, researchers, and
policy makers. By asking the key questions and employing cutting-edge
polling science, the poll delivers information crucial to multiple audiences.
PDK’s partner for the past 47 years is Gallup, the foremost name in polling
in America and around the world. The poll is a scientifically-based survey
of more than 3,499 Americans,18 years and older.
This year, we learned that 64% of Americans and a similar proportion of
public school parents believe there is too much emphasis on standardized
testing in public schools in their community. Americans are split on whether
parents should be allowed to excuse their child from taking one or more
standardized tests (41% said yes, 44% said no). However, a majority of
public school parents said they would not excuse their own child from
taking a standardized test.
The PDK/Gallup poll is financed solely by the Phi Delta Kappa Educational
Foundation, which allows PDK to offer an independent and unbiased report
of American public opinion of its public schools.
Of course, the PDK Educational Foundation is able to continue this work
because of your generous support.

Remember the feeling you experienced
when you did something you knew would make a
difference in another person’s life? Remember how
you felt when you knew you contributed to something
significant? Find that feeling again by joining us in
supporting the PDK Educational Foundation, which also
includes the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment.
The PDK Educational Foundation Board of Governors
is dedicated to using funds donated by Kappans worldwide in exactly the ways you, our donors, intended by
supporting and improving public education. The board
is equally committed to ensuring that contributions
from Thetans support long-standing PLT initiatives.
We take our financial responsibility to our foundation
donors seriously and always willingly share information
about our annual expenditures. We appreciate the spirit
of giving that our Kappan and Thetan families share
and are grateful for their commitment to supporting
education initiatives that make our world a better place.
Doug Christensen
Sharon Robinson
The generosity of all Thetans and Kappans makes a
huge difference in so many lives, and we sincerely
thank you for your gifts and continued support.

The Center on Education Policy (CEP) operates as an
independent center housed at the George Washington
University’s Graduate School of Education and
Human Development. As CEP’s executive director,
Maria Ferguson continues the center’s important
research, much of it currently focused on implementation of the Common Core State Standards
(CCSS). The center’s research also assists education
policymakers, particularly in Washington, D.C.,
and at state education agencies, to make more
informed decisions about education initiatives.
Maria Ferguson
Maria also authors a monthly column in Kappan magazine entitled
“Washington View,” providing readers an understanding of Washington,
D.C., policy decisions and their implications for educators across the U.S.
The PDK Foundation Board of Governors affirms its continuing commitment
to support the center’s important work.
Pi Lambda Theta
Pi Lambda Theta, a member of the PDK
International family of associations, is the premier
honor society in education. For more than 100
years, membership in Pi Lambda Theta has
represented academic excellence and commitment
to the field … a tradition that continues today.
Through the generous contributions from Thetans
around the world, Pi Lambda Theta is able to provide support and inspiration
to aspiring educators on their journey into the classroom. Every year, your
contributions to the Pi Lambda Theta Endowment directly support thousands
of preservice teachers through programs and opportunities that allow them
to develop their teaching craft and engage in a community of like-minded
individuals.
Your contributions also provide much needed scholarships and grants.
In fact, due to your generosity, Pi Lambda Theta increased the amount it
provides in Student Support scholarships by more than $50,000 this year.
3
Pi Lambda Theta (continued)
“Thetans are so generous. The impact they are making in young people’s
lives is powerful. They are showing aspiring teachers what it means to strive
for excellence and to give back. It’s inspiring.”
–Ashley Kincaid, Executive Director, Pi Lambda Theta
Thank you for your gifts. We hope you will continue to support young
Thetans through the Pi Lambda Theta Endowment.
“I teach because I love
watching young minds grow
and discover new things
around them.”

Educators Rising
“The Future Educators Association opened up the possibility of teaching to me.”
–Ocey Holland, FEA National Student Past-President,
University of Louisville Class of 2018
The Future Educators Association® (FEA), a member of the PDK International
family of associations, experienced record-breaking growth in 2014-2015
and laid the groundwork for its 2015 evolution and rebranding to Educators
Rising. Since over 60% of teachers teach within 20 miles of where they went
to high school, every community can benefit from a strong grow-your-own
pipeline program, and that is exactly what FEA provides.
4
Educators Rising
(continued)
“Our national network is all about giving young people a truly authentic
experience in trying out teaching.”
–Dan Brown, Co-Director, Educators Rising,
National Board Certified Teacher
Growth and Impact in 2014-2015
• In 2014-2015, FEA membership grew to 14,518 members, a 37%
increase over the previous year. The number of FEA chapters grew
37%, with 777 participating schools at the close of the year.
• FEA increased its commitment to diversity. While the national
teaching force is 17% non-white, in 2013-2014, FEA’s student
membership was 30% non-white, and in 2014-2015, that
percentage increased to 40%.
• In 2014-2015, FEA Honor Society increased to 1,244 students, a
32% increase over the previous year, and a 64% increase over the
same time two years ago.
A Rising Future
• FEA re-launched as Educators Rising on Aug. 3, 2015.
The new organization builds on the strengths of FEA, while
adding significantly more support for students and teacher leaders.
The network is now free to join and features the EdRising Virtual
Campus, an online platform full of content, connections, and
micro-credentialing opportunities for our rising educators.
• Educators Rising is attracting partners in the field. The National
Board for Professional Teaching Standards has agreed to share
with Educators Rising members—at no cost—a subset of its
ATLAS cases, authentic videos showing National Board Certified
Teachers at work in the classroom. Educators Rising has also
cultivated new state affiliate programs in New Mexico, New York,
New Hampshire, and South Carolina.
Please join us in celebrating the power and the promise of Educators Rising
by donating through the PDK Educational Foundation or by funding a scholarship for a deserving student.

PDK began supporting education study tours more than
40 years ago, and the Educational Foundation continues
that great tradition today. The Gerald H. Read Endowment provides PDK and Pi Lambda Theta members and
Educators Rising teachers with scholarships that help
defray the costs to visit schools and education ministries
in other countries.
Recent study trips to China, Dublin and London, and
Amsterdam and Paris provided members opportunities
to compare and contrast education in the U.S. and
Canada with education in Asia and Europe. Plans for
2015-2016 include a trip to Berlin, Prague, and Krakow.
