FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear families
Term 3 is well underway and Grant High
School is a hive of activity as usual. Our Year
12s are entering their busiest time of the
year, where major assignments are a strong
focus and exam preparation starts to become
a very real challenge. It gave me great
pleasure last week to present so many
commitment certificates to our Year 12s who
are setting a fine example to the rest of the
school with regard to a strong work ethic and
responsible behaviour. I have also been
incredibly impressed with how this cohort
supports each through both difficulties and
successes. They are a delightful group of
young people and I hope they are rewarded
later this year with the results they deserve.
Over the past couple of weeks, students
across the school have achieved success in a
wide variety of areas. We have made state
Knock-out finals in both hockey and soccer,
as well as winning multiple accolades at the
Mt Gambier Debating Eisteddfod and at the
MASA Quiz Night at Penola High School. We
are also very proud of the individual success
of Cody Lewis in hockey outside of school,
details of which appear elsewhere in this
newsletter.
R E S P E C T
Last Friday’s Student Free Day/Staff
Development Day, saw our teaching staff and
classroom SSOs develop their understanding
of the importance of formative feedback in
helping students reach their potential in all
subject areas. This learning was based on the
work of Dylan Wiliam and married very well
with the work on Carol Dweck’s Growth
Mindset that we undertook last term. We
also took the chance to continue our
discussion of dividing our school into four
vertically grouped communities, to improve
our knowledge of each young person and
thus assist in our whole school decisionmaking, as well as further develop
opportunities for individual support of each
student. We are continuing to research the
practice of other highly successful schools
around this idea, and a proposal will be put in
writing shortly.
Further information was provided last
Wednesday about how STEM funds would be
disseminated to our school over the next
eighteen months or so to help improve our
facilities. It was great to have Governing
Council Chair, Gene Lassaline, attend this
information session and further discussion of
this fantastic opportunity will no doubt occur
at our next Governing Council meeting on the
22nd of August.

Course Counselling continues to be a focus and students
will have interviews with the Course Confirming Team
throughout next week to ensure they are making decisions
about their subject choices that will support their future
plans. Parents and caregivers are reminded that
appointments can be made with members of the Course
Confirming Team next Tuesday evening (23rd August) if an
out of school hour appointment is required. Please access
this opportunity through the Parent Portal before 5pm next
Monday (22nd August).
NAPLaN results arrived in the school last week. We are very
pleased with a 95% participation for the Literacy
components of the testing and 92% for Numeracy. We had
an improvement of 9% in the number of students meeting
the National Minimum Standard in writing, while all other
results were commensurate with recent years.
Additionally, 85% of our students showed medium—high
level growth in all areas since Year 7 which is excellent.
Finally, it is with great pleasure that I announce that both
Dr Gary Young and Kirsty Gilham have won permanent
positions at Grant High School from the beginning of 2017.

COURSE COUNSELLING 2017
Course Counselling begins in earnest on Monday August 22 nd.
All students will be allocated a timeslot for an interview with
the Course Confirming Teams. Year 11 students will receive
their time allocations on Friday 19th August (for interviews on
Monday August 22nd), Year 10 students will receive their time
allocations on the morning of Monday August 22nd in home
group (for interviews on Tuesday 23rd August) and Year 9
students will receive their time allocations in home group on
the morning of Wednesday 24th August (for interviews on
Thursday 25th August). Any students who are absent on the day
of their interview will receive another booking time for either
Friday 26th August or sometime during the week beginning the
29th August.
Parents/caregivers wanting to be part of the interview should
make a booking for the evening of Tuesday 23rd August
(interviews available from 3.30pm through to 8.45pm).
Bookings are made in the same manner as for parent teacher
interviews. Alternatively, parents/caregivers are welcome to
attend the interview at the time allocated to their student.
Year 8 into Year 9 Course Counselling will occur early in Term 4.

MULTICULTURAL WEEK
It's that time of the year
again! Multicultural Week is nearly
upon us and Grant High School is
set to dazzle you with an amazing
repertoire of culturally dynamic
activities. This year, Grant High will
be celebrating Multicultural Week
from the 5th to the 9th of
September. Students will be able to
participate in a range of lunchtime
culturally rich activities across the
week. The prism room will also
contain a range of cultural items which will be showcased to
students for the entire week. There will be daily activities for
students to participate in and win amazing prizes. Students in
Years 8 and 9, will have the opportunity to listen to guest
speakers from various cultures and listen to their perspectives
on what multiculturalism means to them. Following this,
students in Year 8, will watch in awe as cultural groups from
Africa and Thailand perform a dance celebrating what it means
to be a refugee in Mount Gambier. Finally, to top off the week,
Year 8 students will participate in a cultural Olympics.
It is set to be an amazing week and an opportunity for the
students at Grant High School to learn about the culturally rich
community that we live in and explore other cultures.

Grant High School would like to commend
Josh Telford for raising $3925 for the
Cancer Foundation. Josh achieved this
target by publically fundraising, shaving
his head and from proceeds of a whole
school casual clothes day. Well done
Josh!

MASA QUIZ NIGHT
The much anticipated MASA Quiz Night was held at Penola High
School on the 6th of August. Grant High School was represented
by 44 students in 12 teams who challenged their minds in both
the mathematical and general knowledge competitions. All
students are to be congratulated for the commitment they
showed and the way in which they represented the school.
Grant High School competed against 5 other schools from the
South East and walked away with two titles.

Yr 12 ART & DESIGN
Marc McBride Illustration Workshop
Year 12 students had the opportunity to be involved in the Marc
McBride illustration workshop held at the Main Corner. Marc is a
well-known illustrator for the book series Deltora Quest. Students
were taken through Marc’s planning processes, several drawing
techniques and were lucky enough to have discussions with him
about the arts industry and what is available in terms of career
opportunities in the wonderful world of Visual Arts.

DEBATING EISTEDDFOD
This year was another successful year for Grant High School at the
Mount Gambier Debating Eisteddfods. GHS students participated
across two days, the Seniors (Year 10-12) on Wednesday the
3rd of August and the Juniors (Year 8 & 9) on Thursday the 4th.
The competition was tough, but all students gave their best effort
and argued their topics well. The junior teams were hard to beat,
with Zac Mullan, Meg Wilson and Holly Baldock winning the best
team of the day and securing the shield for another year. The
seniors spoke well, but found themselves up against particularly
tough competition. Sophie Monkley spoke brilliantly and won the
best speaker of the day trophy. Congratulations to all students
who participated and we are looking forward to next year.

DISABILITY AWARENESS
This week Kent Dredge from Blind Sports SA visited Grant High
School to run a Blind Sports Awareness session with 9AS and
the Special Options Class. Students enjoyed playing games while
wearing different lenses that simulated what the world looks
like for someone with a vision impairment.

Last week our hockey teams played in the local Knock Out
competition. As a result three teams: the 8/9 Girls; Open Girls
and Open Boys, have secured a place in the Adelaide Finals. Our
8/9 Boys are also to be commended on the way they played as
they were only narrowly defeated, whilst having 5 non hockey
players on the team. We wish the teams well next week in
Adelaide

Yr 8/9 KO NETBALL
On Monday the 8th of August, Grant High participated in the
Knockout Netball competition. The Year 8/9 team competed
against 4 other schools, finishing third overall for the day. They
had comfortable wins against MGHS (19-8) and Saint Martin’s
(26-3).
The girls played well as a team and showed some great passages
of play throughout the day. They demonstrated how versatile
they were as a team and showed great sportsmanship on the

KO OPEN NETBALL
Yr 10 KO NETBALL
A few late injuries from the weekend before reduced the team
to seven members. Thank you to our late recruits Sophie
Donaldson and Annaleise Pople for joining the team and helping
with the team manager role. Our first game saw us come up
against an agile Penola side where the girls went down by 6. The
girls were drawn at half time against St Martins Lutheran
College, where they worked hard to win by 3 goals. The games
against Mount Gambier High School and Tenison Woods College
saw the girls go down to two consistently strong sides.
Sophie Monkley dominated in the goal circle all day with help
from Karli Earle, Abbey Patzel, Julia Myers and Bailey Young
rotating in goals and the mid-court working tirelessly to take the
ball down the court. Darcy Egan and Isabelle Sneath had a tough
day in defence and did a great job taking some great intercepts.
It was a great effort by all girls.

CONGRATULATIONS CODY
It is often difficult to persuade Year 11 and Year 12 girls to take a
break from their studies for a day, but the beautiful weather
conditions were hard to deny, and so a dedicated team of girls
presented for the GHS Open Knockout team this year. A team of
nine who have never played together, combined well and were
competitive in all four minor round games. A well-drilled Tenison
Woods College side proved to be too good on the day, taking out
the competition to progress to Adelaide in all grades. Special
thanks to our volunteer umpires and also Renee Henke, a Year 10
student, for stepping up to play in the Open division.
Cody Lewis has been selected in a couple of State hockey teams
this year, including U18 and U16 Schools girls.

As a named train-on for the U16 Australian team selected from
the Melbourne championships, if any selected players withdraw
from the team, Cody may be fortunate enough to be called up to
tour Germany and play against other countries in May/June next
year.
Cody joined fellow Grant High Student, Laura Edmonds, in the
State U18 team that competed in Launceston in July and then was
named as part of the leadership group for the State U16 School
girls team that played in Melbourne this month.
While the final placings for both teams was a little disappointing,
the experience and enjoyment gained from these tournaments
has been invaluable.
