I am very pleased to see that Imagine Performing Arts is now a resident company in
Aspen Landing in Ward 6!
Imagine offers community-based musical and dramatic performances that support
the development of the next generation of theatre artists, offering opportunity for
both youth and adults.
The benefits are many. Arts provide a natural place for socialization and allows
diverse social groups to interact. A sense of belonging lends to self-confidence and
helps prepare our youth for future success.
There are many ways to interpret the world and we should celebrate the multiple
perspectives!
I congratulate Imagine Performing Arts for adding to the positive force for community
building and development, especially in new areas – they have a unique role to play!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR
Thanks to
“…because I knew you – I have been changed, for good”
That is the reality of being involved in a show like this and being involved in theatre overall.
For some in our show, this is their first opportunity on a large stage, for some it is a chance
to reacquaint themselves with their passion, and for some it is a chance to keep doing
what they love with others who share their passion. But regardless of where they are at in
their lives, they will have made friendships and memories that will last a lifetime because
they all got to be a little crazy together - as that’s what it took to get this show to the stage.
We had laughter, we had some tears (and yes, some of those were mine) – and in the end
what you see before you today is an example of what can happen when people (most of
whom didn’t know one another when we started) come together with a common goal –
greater than any one person.
for supporting the Arts
in Calgary.
Creative. Agile. Efficient. Local.
Theatre is a collaborative art and while there are opportunities to hone one’s skills at
classes or camps we believed that there was a need for more performance opportunities
in Calgary which is why Music and Play decided to launch Imagine Performing Arts last
year. That is not to say that there are no other opportunities in Calgary – actually it’s
far from it – but for a city of our size, there is certainly room for a few more! This new
program affords these opportunities for performers of all ages to spread their wings, just
a little further – and affords them the opportunity to grow and learn and at the same time
being pushed to excel past what they thought was possible.
For 25 years, I’ve had the good fortune of getting to work with artists from across our
country. As insane as this industry can be – it is the joy of discovery and the opportunity
to work with new people and to tell stories in new ways that keeps me coming back. Our
young people live at the pinnacle of this insanity and for sure they kept us on our toes for
the past three months and in most cases, we all came back… To our young cast members,
I say thank you for your willingness to try something new – even when, in many cases, you
had no idea what we were asking you to do. To our teens and lead actors – and to all of our
great creative team – to you I say a very sincere thanks for continually reminding me why
we thought this was a good idea – even on the days when it wasn’t that clear anymore.
Your time and dedication to this production will not soon be forgotten. And finally to the
parents of our young cast and to our audiences, thank you for embracing a new company
in Calgary and for driving your kids to way too many rehearsals.
Imagine operates under a different model as we have chosen to run our theatre company
under our main school – Music and Play. Since most of the world only has two possible
definitions for an arts organization, I guess that would make us a ‘for-profit’ theatre
company. Now perhaps if our last names were Mirvish we could entertain this conversation
a little longer but ‘for-profit’ could not be further from the truth. We did not make this
decision because we wanted to make money with Imagine – rather we have chosen this
path to demonstrate that the arts must be a priority and that it can also be a viable, selfsustaining endeavour. The line between ‘for‘ and ‘not-for’ profit companies is slim and it
largely comes down to where any excess revenues are invested. For us, we seek to invest
in our community, our artists and our young people - like we have been able to do through
our first production!
Thanks so much for supporting Imagine and the future of theatre in Calgary – because we
got to know you...we have all been changed for good.
Enjoy the show!
