ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT (AQAR)
Part A
Compliance on Plan of action: 2012-2013

UGC has granted Extension of Autonomous Status to the college for six years
from 2011-12 to 2016-17 (UGC Ref. No.22-1/2012(AC) dt. Aug, 2012) based on the
UGC Joint Expert Review Committee Report.

The NAAC Peer Team has visited our college during 11.10.2012 to 13.10.2012 and
Accredited with the “A” grade in January 2013 for the third time with a CGPA of
3.37.

Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Govt. of India has
approved the proposal for establishing a “National Centre of Excellence in
Statistical and Mathematical Modeling on Bio-resources Management” in our
college. 187 institutions have applied for this scheme. 30 institutions were called
for interactive session and our college was one among the 16 institutions finally
selected by MHRD all over India ours is the only Arts and Science College selected
under this scheme by MHRD. Initially Rs. 1,00,00,000/- (Rupees One Crore only)
has been released as the first installment to our college this year.
Dr. D. Pandiaraja, and Lt. Dr. N. Arun Nagendran, are the facilitators for the
proposed National Centre of Excellence in Statistical and Mathematical
Modeling on Bio-resources Management.

College has received a grant of Rs. 10,00,000/- under UGC Additional Assistance
Scheme for the year 2012-13.

Our College received a grant of Rs.7,71,000/- under DBT Star College Scheme for
the academic year 2012-13.

1. ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS & OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTION

To motivate students to go for higher learning up to research level, the college
provided value based career oriented quality education in a liberal atmosphere and
shaped them to adorn leadership and entrepreneurship and citizenship roles.

To exemplify this standard with the help of committed and competent staff, the
college ensured need-based curriculum, innovative methodology and objective
evaluation.

To create self-confidence among the students, the college conducted periodical
training programmes both on technical skills and soft skills by eminent trainers.

Activities like these were made known to the various stakeholders through
prospectus, website, student orientation meeting, parent teacher meeting, staff
meeting, and the mission statement displayed in various parts of the campus.
2. New Academic Programmes initiated

The Department of English has started UG English course under Self - Finance
Stream.

The Department of Economics was also started in UG English medium course
under Self - Finance Stream.
3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction

Uniform Credits for UG &PG.

Syllabi booklets were given to all the students.
4. Interdisciplinary Programmes Started:

The Department of Chemistry offers consultancy services in FTIR, UV and Water
analysis as well as Molecular Modeling to the students, teachers, researchers and
industries in South India.

5. Examination reforms Implemented

An enhancement in aggregate mark for the passing minimum for UG courses
from 35% to 40% has been adhered to as fixed by Madurai Kamaraj University,
Madurai.

Results are published following the meeting of Awards Committee during every
end semester exam and results are made available in the College website.

Mark register and summary of results are sent to individual departments by the
office of the COE.
6. Number of candidates who qualified in NET/SLET/GATE/UGC Lectureship

G. Arun, Lecture in Biotech (SF) Qualified in SET 2012 Exam.
7. Initiative towards Faculty Development Programme:
Improving the quality of faculty by conducting need - based training programmes has been
initiated. The following is the brief information about the same:

A Special Lecture was arranged Thiru. Dr. J. A. Charles, Associate Professor,
Department of Chemistry, Arul Ananadar College, Karumattur, Madurai, delivered a
Guest Lecture and conducted an interactive session on “Facing NAAC Peer Team”
in our premises on 24.07.2012.

On -line Attendance practice is followed for maintaining attendance of students in
the College.
8. Total Number of Seminars / Workshops conducted
State Level Students Seminars:
 A series of State Level Students Seminars (Two seminars per department) was
held in the months of September 2012 and February / March 2013 by all the
departments. Students from colleges all over Tamil Nadu actively participated in
the academic interaction. A total of 1609 papers (924 in the odd semester and
685 in the even semester respectively) were presented.

Programmes conducted

A Two-Day UGC Sponsored National Seminar on “Economic Upliftment and
Inclusion: Changes and Challenges” was organized by the Research Department of
Economics on 07.03.2013 & 08.03.2013. A total of 273 Paper Presenters took part in
the National Seminar. Dr. R. G. Desai, Professor of Economics, Bangalore University,
Bangalore, delivered the Keynote address.
National Level Seminar on “Issues and Strategies for Women Empowerment: Vision
2020” - 14.03.2013 to 15.03.2013

A Special Lecture on “Empowering Women in Health” was given by Dr.
Kamala Selvaraj, Obstetrician and Gynecologist, G G Hospital, Chennai.

A Special Lecture on “Bringing Women to the Centre Stage” was given by Prof.

Our College has taken the initiative and has become part of the Cluster colleges
selected by CII (Confederation of Indian Industry, New Delhi).

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU),
Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI) and Zoo Outreach Organization
(ZOO) are some of the institutions with whom we have collaboration.

On-the –Job training is undertaken by pre-final year UG students (Business
Administration) during the summer vacation.

15. Honours / Awards to faculty
 Dr. I. Nagarajan, Department of Commerce was granted ‘Honorary Rank’ of
Lieutenant Commander by the President of India in recognition of his 23 years
of long and meritorious service in NCC (Navy). This entitles him to have the rank
throughout his life time and wear uniform in all important occasions.
 Dr. P. Velmurugan, Department of Tamil, received the Best Book Award from the
Govt. of Tamil Nadu for his book on “ Ilakkana Marabum, Ilakkiya Pathivum”. The
award carries a cash prize Rs. 30,000/- also.


The library has a separate information center with a number of useful books on
General Knowledge and Competitive Examination. As part

‘Initiation
Programme for Freshers, the library also conducts Orientation Courses for the
effective use of library and its resources for the 1st year UG and PG students. The
library also provides Current Awareness Service to the students by conducting
Libraria Quizes.


22. Students Feedback
Feed Back:
 Online Student Feedback system is introduced in our college. All the students are
instructed to give their feedback by opening and answering the Feedback
provision from the college website. The Feedback is collected then and analyzed
for improving the quality of teachers and education in general.
Meetings
 Seven Student Council meetings were conducted.
The meetings focused on
students’ feedback on curriculum and co-curricular activities. Follow-up actions
also are done periodically.
 Human chain rally was also organized with the help of students to promote the
theme of “Voting is our Right” on 21.01.13.
 An awareness programme on National Voters Day was organized on 24.01.2012
Elocution, Essay writing and Drawing Competitions were conducted to promote
Youth participation in Nation Building process.
Scholarships
 Thirty Eight Students were recommended for availing of educational scholarship
from the Sita Ram Jindal Foundation Trust, Bangalore. A total of Rs.1,46,700/was granted to 38 students of our College.

Residential camp participation
 Thirteen students of our college participated in the RYLA Camp held at Mahathma
Residential School Campus, Alagarkovil, Madurai, organized by the Rotary Club of
Madurai West from 04.01.2013 to 06.01.2013
Events
 Pongal festival was celebrated on 11.01.2013 by the students of our college in
which Tamil folk culture was demonstrated by our students.
Participation of students in various events
 One Hundred and five students of our College have become members of Young
Indians Club sponsored by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Madurai Chapter.
 These Students have attended YI Meetings at Thiagarajar College of Engineering,
Hotel Fortune Pandiyan and Hotel Sangam at Madurai.
 Inter Departmental Competitions were conducted on 28.01.13 by inviting students
of various departments of our college in connection with Maa Madurai Pottruvom
event. An event which depicted 3000 year old history and heritage of Madurai
sponsored partly by the Government under the Chairmanship of Karumuttu
T. Kannan, the President of our college on 08, 09 & 10 February 2013. Students also
were sent as volunteers for the successful conduct of the event.
Orientation to Students
 An orientation programme was conducted for all 1st year UG and PG students about
Curriculum, Examination, Scholarship and Student career Planning.
Student Welfare Activities
 The facility of opening SB account with Zero Balance was given to 300 students
of our College in association with City Union Bank, Ellis Nagar Branch.
 Conducted Traffic Awareness Camp to our students in association with Madurai
Police in the month of December 2012.

25. Computerization of Examination results

Photocopies of answer scripts are issued to the candidates applying for
revaluation.

Registering for the summative exams and the marks awarded to the individual
candidates’, are computerized which is available in the results section of the
College’s website.

Issuance of mark statements are in the form of computer print-outs.

Hologram label is affixed on the consolidated mark statements and rank
certificates and the laminated mark statements are issued for the eligible
candidates.

26. Increase in Infrastructure facilities

Public address system was purchased at the cost of 27,242/- to be used for conduct
on Students Meeting and Cultural events.

Inverters were purchased at the total value of of 91,500/- for Hostel and Mess to
get rid of the power failures and the subsequent difficulties to the students.

New vessels were purchased at the cost of Rs. 19,500/- for Hostel Mess.

Second floor was newly constructed with 8 rooms and 2 dormitories. We are now
able to accommodate 60 more students in our Women’s hostel.
27. Technology up gradation

Updating College website is done.

On Line facility for all the Students & Staff are provided.

Implementation on line attendance system for the students has been initiated.

Major Science Instruments & Facilities for Science Labs are provided.

Laptops, LCD Projectors and Internet facilities for all the Departments are provided.

 The institution appraises the performance of the non-teaching staff.

The faculty (teaching and non-teaching) have been instructed to use computers,
internet, audio-visual aids, computer aided packages etc.,


Mathematics, Computer Science, Business Administration, and Economics. The other
departments are also in the process of forming separate Alumni wings. An Alumni

31. Activities and Support from the Parent - Teacher Association
 Parent Teacher Association meetings for the ODD semester was held on 24.08.12.
Parents visited the college and also interacted with teachers in their respective
departments. A total of 534 parents participated in the meeting.
 The meeting for the EVEN semester was conducted on 29.01.2013 inviting
parents to have an interaction with the Principal and the teachers. A total of 687
parents attended the meeting.
32. Health Services

Two MOUs are signed by our college with M/s. Anbu Hospital, Teppakulam, Madurai
& R.R. Hospital- Multi Specialty Centre, K .K. Nagar, Madurai for periodical checkup
and other health services for our students and staff.

Group Insurance coverage scheme is given to students of our college and extended
to Parents of all students also.

NCC (Army & Navy) NSS Volunteers have donated blood for emergency operations
at various hospitals in Madurai apart from regular blood donation camp.

Madurai Kamaraj University ‘A’ zone Inter collegiate Tournaments

Our College Handball & Ball badminton (M) team won the MKU ‘A’ zone interCollegiate Winner Trophy held at Thiagarajar College, Madurai.

Our College Cricket (M) team won the MKU ‘A’ zone inter- Collegiate Runners
Trophy held at Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai.

Our College Hockey (M) team won the MKU ‘A’ zone inter- Collegiate Runners
Trophy held at Dr. M.G.R. Stadium, Madurai.
Honours Received
Thiagarajar College of Madurai was unanimously selected to convene the MKU’s ‘A’
Zone Inter collegiate Men’s Tournaments for the year 2012-2013, in the meeting of the ‘A’
zone, Directors of Physical Education of Madurai Kamaraj University held at MKU College,
Madurai on 25th July 2012. The Principal of Thiagarajar College, Dr. A. Thamaraichelvan
was the Chairman and Mr. R. Selvakumar, Director of Physical Education was the
Convener.
Inter-Institutional programmes
The department of physical education organized more than 50 friendly matches
against different institutions in different disciplines like, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball,
Cricket, Football, Hockey, Handball, Volley ball, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Athletics, Ball
badminton for men & Badminton, Handball and Basket ball, for women.
The department of physical education organized a one day trekking camp for Part V
Physical Education students (300 both Regular & SF Students) at Alagar Kovil Mountain in
the month of February 2013.
Kalaithanthai Tournaments
Kalaithanthai Tournaments are is organized every year in memory of our college
founder Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar. For the year 2012– 2013 they
were held from 21st to 23rd February, 2013. Tournaments were held at inter-colligate level
in Basketball for men and Volleyball for women. Yadava College were winners and
N.M.S.S.V.N College runners-up in basketball. In Volleyball V. V. Vanniaperumal College,

Virudhunagar emerged winners and Lady Doak College, Madurai were the runners-up

Annual Sports Meet - Intramural Tournament & Sports Events
Intramural Tournaments were held in 26 disciplines for both men and women
during January to March 2013. The 64th Annual Sports Meet was held on 12th March 2013.

Madurai Kamaraj University annual athletic meet held at Dr. M.G.R stadium,

run with 15.06 sec and broken the 15 years of old record.

Plan of the Institution for the next year

The Institution has plans for getting “Potential for Excellence” award from UGC
after the due notification in UGC XII Plan Guidelines for the award.

The Institution also aims at getting ISO Certification next year.

More need based UG &PG courses will be introduced next year.
