President report – March 2015
Wow, what a great start to the year with our February Closed Unrestricted Competition very well attended
despite to continuing hot & humid conditions, thank you competitors for your continued support of our
club!
Days like these wouldn’t be possible without our many wonderful volunteers. Thank you to the judges:
Rachel Cairns, Sue Mills, Gill Green, Lew Hyson and Joey Dernee-Mannion and to the many helpers who
made the day come together (even with very hot & humid weather conditions - you guys rock!) Margaret
Finucane, Julie Scott, Catherine Smith, Maree Smith, Judy Evans, Sharmayne Spencer, Lise Hunt, Anja Spek,
Deb Fulwood, Allissia Curry, Helen Dunn, Pam Crosby, Rachel Stafford, Debbie Symons, Brian Thomas,
Caleb Thomas and everyone else who pitched in on the day - awesome job!

Our 2015 Member High Score has kicked off and results can be found below – it’s not too late to
participate just update your membership and you’re good to go for April onwards!
As a pro-active dressage club, our main aim is to develop and grow the sport of dressage in our region. We
do this by offering our members and guests friendly & well organised competitions (official and unofficial)
and training opportunities. Deb Fulwood has been instrumental in organising access to Peter Shaw for
coaching; he was here in November, in February and he’ll be here again next week (Friday 20 & Saturday
21 March). I’m not sure whether there are still available spots in his schedule but if you’re interested
please give Deb a call on 0423 831 434. Otherwise, consider fence sitting! Peter doesn’t mind and a lot can
be learned from watching others.
In August we’ll be hosting Caroline Twomey (from Team Twomey with husband John) for 2 days of lessons.
Lessons will be charged at $110 for TDC members and $120 for non-members (50 minutes) and will be held
at our Moonbi grounds. MORE INFO BELOW!
Feedback is very welcome; let us know which instructors you’d like TDC to bring to town! Or if you’re able to
assist with bringing instructors to the Tamworth region please let us know.
Next on our busy dressage schedule are our April Closed Unrestricted Competition sponsored by Horseland
Tamworth on Sunday 26 April and our Championships on 23 & 24 May.

To be eligible to win a High Point Annual Award the TDC member must have current
TDC membership for the calendar year.
Awards are determined by allocating points to horse and rider combinations placing /ranking at

Glossary of Dressage Terms to help you understand your marks and comments
C
CADENCE
The marked accentuation of the rhythm and (musical) beat that is a result of a steady and suitable tempo
harmonizing with a springy impulsion.
CARRIAGE
The posture of the horse, most easily evaluated when viewing the horse’s profile or outline.
CHEWING THE BIT
The movements of the horse’s mouth—gently and softly mouthing the bit—showing mobility and relaxation
of the jaw and causing secretion of saliva for a “wet mouth.” Not to be confused with snapping or grinding
of the teeth.
CONFIDENCE
The boldness and self-assurance with which the horse performs, and the trust in his partnership with the
rider.
CONTACT
The reins are stretched so that they form a straight line, not a loop. “Correct contact” or “acceptance of
contact” is determined by the elasticity of the connection between horse and rider.
CORRECTNESS
The straightness of the action of the limbs (e.g., faults would be winging, paddling, twisting hocks).Not the
same as Purity. Dressage judges deal with Correctness only indirectly, that is, to the degree that it affects the
purity or quality of the gait. Breeding class judges address correctness directly.

Members Out & About
Sue Thomas had success with her Australian Stock Horse dressage mare Clonmel Gidget. On Friday 28 February
Gidget placed 1st in the Open Stock Horse Mare Led and followed that win with being awarded Reserve Champion
Stock Horse Mare. On Sunday 1 March Gidget placed 1st in Open Stock Horse Mare Led at Barraba Show. Sue was
also successful with her 3 year old Stock Horse Filly Clarkes Stud Prudence placing 2nd at both shows in the 3 Year
Opld Stock Horse Led Filly. Prudence will be making her debut at TDC later in the year.
Well done Sue we can’t wait to see you competing on Prudence.

Caroline Twomey – see bio below
Having spent the last 10 years in New Zealand, John and Caroline are now repatriating their equestrian coaching and
training business to Australia.
Caroline is a Grand Prix dressage rider and coach. Many will remember her (as Caroline Hooper) and her wonderful
horse Merrifield Zia as one of the shining Australian dressage combinations of the ‘80s. Caroline was also a wellknown face on the showing scene and rode a myriad of horses to win over 50 East Coast, National and Australian
Championships. Caroline now concentrates mainly on her coaching and has had much success in NZ coaching both
National level Dressage and Eventing riders. Caroline has been a High Performance coach with the NZ Academy of
Sport. She is an EA Show Horse judge and also enjoys working with show horses as well as amateur riders and young
riders. In fact all are welcome and will enjoy her ability to demystify the training process. Weather your goal is
enjoyment or success her enthusiastic and engaging teaching style will help get the best from you and your horse.
John is a 4* Eventing rider although his talents don’t stop there. He has won many titles to Advanced level dressage
and is a consummate show jumping rider. John is partnered by his 2 best mates, Flaunt It and Highly Recommended
and they are turning heads here in Australia just as they did in New Zealand. John has won many NZ Eventing titles
with often these 2 horses fighting it out for 1st and 2nd. John is a very popular coach for both Showjumping and
Eventing. His open and engaging manner ensures that his lessons are thoroughly enjoyed as well as being of the
highest standard. His love of the horses is evident in his teaching as well his riding.
Between them they have over 5 decades of experience in the equine industry.
