Zumba and Eastern Ski Fest - A Fun Zumba Party. Exercise with a great Latin rhythm.
Shake Your Booty – Wiggle Those Hips – Burn Baby Burn…those pesky calories! Get
Those Hips and Knees in Shape for Skiing. In addition, we’ll introduce our Eastern trips
and the SCWDC Ski School.
The Evening’s Schedule:
6 – 7:30 PM - Happy Hour, with club-provided hors d’oeuvres at the Veranda Café on
the second floor. Come visit with SCWDC’s Eastern Trip Leaders and Ski School. Leaders
will be available to answer questions on our upcoming ski season featuring trips to Canaan Valley, Seven Springs, Mont Tremblant, and Elk Mountain. Bonus: Raffle giveaways
from local ski stores and tickets to the new Warren Miller Film showing November 10.
7:30 – 9:30 – We’ll host a Zumba Party with a professional instructor. One Web site
says, “Zumba fitness is an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorieburning dance fitness party that's moving millions of people toward joy and health”. No
special clothes or shoes required unless you want to have a little more freedom in your
movement or just want to wear your cool athletic gear.
2014 Eastern Trips – here’s what you need to know:
1. Brush up on your ski skills with one of three one-day trips to Ski Liberty. Our Ski
School provides ½ day instruction in skiing or boarding at any skill level, including
beginner, for teenagers 13 and over and for adults. Advance reservation and payment
are required (at least a week ahead of time is desirable) so that we schedule enough
instructors to be there, given the various experience levels.
2. Join the January Canaan Valley trip (Thursday – Sunday) and get instruction every
day from the SCWDC Ski School instructors in skiing or boarding for teenagers 13 &
over and adults, at any ability level. Advance reservation and payment are required so
that we schedule enough instructors to be there.
3. Join SCWDC’s fourth annual outing to Elk Mountain, expanded to include lift tickets
for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday skiing. No Ski School instruction, just the fun of going
to one of nearest-to-DC fun mountains. This trip has been very successful three years in
a row, and this year we are expanding it to a four-day trip.
4. A five-day, Sunday-to-Friday trip to Mont Tremblant, one of the premier ski resorts of
the East. Check it out in the Eastern area of the Web site and the article in this issue.
5. An all-inclusive trip to Seven Springs By Train – Thursday to Monday.
It’s been a long time since the club took the train to a ski resort, and remember, that’s
how the club got its start in 1936. As planned by the SCWDC President to recapture
some of the ‘old-time’ fun, this trip will leave on a train out of Union Station on January 16, enjoy a dinner en route paid personally by the trip leader, arrive at the station
nearest Seven Springs, then ski four days, Friday through Monday. All breakfasts and
dinners are included. Full article in the Eastern area.

President’s Message

Hi,
As I write this in early September, I’m enjoying summer and
I hope you are too. It’s kind of a funny time where the next meeting is Meetings…………………………………………………2
President’s Message…………………………………3
“Ski Fest”, September 14, the roll-out of 2014 ski trips, and yet we’ve
Western Trip List……………………………………4-5
experienced 80s and 90s August and September temperatures.
Eastern………………………………………………6-7
I’d like to build on some of the remarks I made in my previSocial……………………………………………………8
ous column.
1.
The new website and membership system seem to be work- Culture…………………………………………………9
Recreation……………………………………………10
ing well. Webpages and events are very readable, a variety of help
files have been added, and there are various ways to navigate to get what you want
Tennis……………………………………………10-11
to know. What do you think? I especially appreciate the accuracy of the new memTeam Sports……………………………………………12
bership system. The custom programming of the old system had led to some inacHikes………………………………………………13-14
curacies. I believe most of these have been corrected. A few PayPal transactions did
not go properly through the new system. They were discovered and corrected.
For this and other areas I will describe, I would appreciate getting feedback either
directly to me, or to the Board of Directors (myself and 8 directors). There will be a
list of contacts at the end of this article.
2.
The new website has a Member-Only area. It’s still under development; we hope to add a form of the Who’s Who directory into the website. In October, instead of publishing our annual financial audit in the magazine, we will publish it on the web
in the Member-Only area.
3.
The revised Ski O-Gram is shorter and in a simpler format than before. It’s faster to read/scan and linked to all the relevant event information on the website. We’re not trying to duplicate the magazine anymore. Several different email lists were
combined into one list of about 2,200 recipients. It goes almost equally to three groups: current members, former members,
and people who just get the Ski-O-Gram. I think this provides better communication and it directs people to the website. We
are a membership organization and the new format encourages members to utilize our new and exciting web site.
4.
Our secondary web site, the Capital Ski and Ride area of “Meetup.com”, has been completely changed. We posted all
2014 Western and Eastern trips there, and all of the postings point individuals to the SCWDC Web site.
5.
Starting with the February/March 2014 issue, the Ski Club’s magazine is not going to be mailed except to those who
request it. A way to request it is on the back page. This is a big change for the club and may be controversial to some of you. Let
me explain. Production of the magazine is costly in terms of both money and time. The magazine is our single largest business
expense except for the office staff. Many clubs have moved from publishing a newsletter or a magazine to maintaining a website and providing an electronic copy of the magazine meaning “viewable” or “downloadable” as a PDF document.
In the past six years there’s been a balancing act between key club income sources and expenses. In 2007 the magazine was
costing $60,000 and membership income was $72,000. In 2009, the magazine expense was reduced to approximately $30,000
and reduced further in 2013 to about $25,000. Unfortunately membership income has dropped every year and is now at the
$52,000 level. About 95% of our active members have an email address in their membership record. This means they have
access to the Internet and therefore to the SCWDC web site. I want the club to skip printing and mailing the next three issues:
February-March, April-May, and June-July. For August-September, we will publish and mail what amounts to a “Ski issue” and
everything else that is relevant for that time period.
Is this a painful decision? Yes. Are there other options? Yes. We can increase dues. We can increase the assessment percentage
included in all club ski events, or in other words raise event prices. Both of the latter options take money out of your pocket
and I consider these not the right choices this year.
In the near future we will issue membership cards. I believe membership should have privileges and I intend to create
6.
an atmosphere where this becomes apparent.
I’ve written a long President’s message here. I invite you to give feedback to all of us that are leading the club at this time. You
can:
• Write to one of the following persons/groups:
1.
President: Madeline Metcalfe, [email protected]. (20 Year SCWDC member)
2.
Board of Directors: [email protected] (averaging18 years of SCWDC membership)
SCWDC Office: [email protected]
3.
• Come to the October 1 meeting of the Crowne Plaza Crystal City where I and other Board members will be there to meet
you
• Respond by name or anonymously to the survey that is posted on the SCWDC web site

Western Highlights
Panorama, Canada, December 28 - January 4, 2014, $1,995.
Our first ski trip of the year departs December 28 over the New Year’s holiday, for the hidden gem of Western Canada --Panorama Mountain Ski Resort, offering over 2,847 acres of skiable terrain, more than 4,000 vertical feet, and virtually no
lift lines. For the more advanced skiers/boarders, the Taynton Bowl, awarded "Best New Terrain" by Skiing and Ski Canada
Magazine, offers 1000 acres of powder, glades, chutes and gullies. The Greywolf Nordic Centre has over 20 km of groomed and
track-set cross-country trails.
If you are looking for adventure, you’ll find it. The Extreme Dream Zone is a must for the adventurous skier/rider. Open
glades, steeps, and a variety of route options make the “Zone” the place for a challenge. Taynton Bowl used to be accessible by
helicopter only, now the back country is within bounds. All expert terrain, the east facing slope captures exceptional snowfall
throughout the season. The Sun Bowl is a great place on a sunny day with wide open runs and a variety of glades to navigate.
It is also on the way down Schober’s Dream, formerly the longest continuous run (3.2 km) before Taynton Bowl (5 km) was
brought in bounds. View of 1000 Peaks is exactly that. From the top of this trail, the rocky mountains appear covering the
horizon in jagged snowy peaks.
Trip participants will stay in the luxurious Upper Village Condos, all of which offer either ski-in, ski-out convenience, or
are only a few steps from the Mile One Quad chairlift. After a full day on the mountain, enjoy the gorgeous views from your
own balcony, or luxuriate in the fabulous Panorama Springs Hot Pools! With a “Mountain Boutique” inspired interior design,
all units feature a gas fireplace, TV, DVD, and a full kitchen with dishwasher and microwave, all to make your ski vacation ultra
comfortable. Leader information and trip application can be found in then December 28 event posting (departure date) on the
SCWDC web site, by navigating to the December calendar.
Whistler, Canada, January 11-18. Trip Price: $1,720.
North America's biggest resort has 7,071 acres spread over the two mountains. Whistler's terrain is vast enough to offer
a combination of European glacial skiing and American tree skiing. Combined with a village that never sleeps, this resort is a
skiers' paradise. It warrants gold for terrain, challenge, value, lifts, service, on-mountain food, dining, après-ski, off-hill activities, and scenery.
We’ll be staying at the Delta Village Suites located in the center of Whistler Village and an 8-minute walk to the lifts (the
hotel offers free shuttle service). The spacious units include full kitchens with dishwashers, sofa bed in living room, washer/
dryer. The 2-bedroom units have two full bathrooms. The hotel has heated outdoor pool with indoor access, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, DVD, and a full kitchen with dishwasher and microwave, all to make your ski vacation ultra comfortable. Leader
information and trip application can be found in the January 11 event posting (departure date) for this trip on the SCWDC
web site, by navigating to the January calendar.
Crested Butte, Colorado, February 15 - 22, 2014. Price, $1,640
Crested Butte is a world class ski resort in a league of its own. Far removed from the more crowded interstate highway
resorts of Colorado's I-70, the charming western town and resort are situated in the southwestern part of the state, tucked
away in the Elk Mountain Range. We'll be staying at the Plaza Condominiums at 2 & 3-bedroom suites with hot tubs, sauna
and on-premise restaurant, just a short walk to a main lift.
Perfectly positioned to catch Colorado's best winter weather fronts, storms that sweep down from Canada generally hit
Crested Butte head-on dumping exceptional amounts of snow. Here you'll find the lift lines short and slopes uncrowded. It
doesn't get any better than that! 48% of the mountain is intermediate terrain, offering a wide variety of exhilarating runs
including playful blues and long groomers. 50% of the terrain is advanced, with glade skiing, expansive bowls, and "gut check"
steeps. Don't worry--novices have plentiful beginner terrain to develop their passion too. Crested Butte leads the state in
teaching first-time skiers.
Off the slopes, you'll find the old mining supply town of Crested Butte to be authentic and unpretentious, but not lacking
the frills and extras of a world class ski resort. The town's main street, famed Elk Avenue, offers an abundance of exceptional
dining and entertainment opportunities. The friendly locals of this small, unique town know how to welcome and entertain
their guests. Be prepared to return home feeling as though you've just had a "real ski vacation". Leader information and trip
application can be found in the February 15 event posting (departure date) on the SCWDC web site, by navigating to the February calendar.

Canaan
Valley SPE Weekend, Thursday to Sunday, January 9- 12.
This SPE Weekend in beautiful Canaan Valley includes three days of skiing and boarding. Snow conditions will dictate
whether we ski/slide at Timberline or Canaan Valley Resort. Your trip will include daily small group lessons with the club's
ski school. Our PSIA/ AASI-certified instructors will help you achieve your goals, whether you have never skied before or are
an expert looking to refine your technique. We will again be staying in lovely 4-bedroom cottages at the nearby Canaan Valley
Resort and Conference Center featuring an indoor a heated pool, whirlpool, Sauna, and Fitness Center. Great skiing and boarding begin with great snow. Timberline averages over 150” of powder each season and possesses a peak elevation of 4,268 ft
and a vertical rise of 1,000 ft. So you will enjoy some of the longest runs in the mid-Atlantic, as long as 2 miles. Total price for
members is $420 for this trip; single supplement and lodge rates available. We would appreciate a single payment for this trip.
Sign via the web site application.
Seven Springs, PA - Thursday to Monday, 2014 MLK Weekend (Jan 16-20)
For a real change of pace come relive the first trip the Ski Club of Washington DC took over 75 years ago in 1936. It was the
start of the ski club. Members took a train from Union Station to Pittsburg, then across Pennsylvania, stopping in Glencoe, PA to
ski in an open field. There was no chair lift, no lodge, and no bar. While skiing has improved a bit over the years, we are getting
as close as we can to the original trip of these 81 ski club pioneers. While we won’t travel as long on the train, we will be going
to Seven Springs which is about one hour from Glencoe, PA.
So here is your chance to leave your cares behind and spend a weekend skiing some of the most enjoyable slopes the East
has to offer. Seven Springs is a complete resort with indoor pool, hot tubs, restaurants, après-ski, indoor rollerblading, snowcat
rides, snowmobile tours, and snowshoe tours. But you want to ski or ride and not worry about the details, right? Relax or party
on the train ride up. Once disembarked from the train, participants will be transported by bus to Seven Springs. Your lift ticket
is good Friday through Sunday, and then the express bus returns you to the Amtrak station on Monday afternoon.
Page 6 - www.SCWDC.org
Eastern
Mont Tremblant, Sunday to Friday, February 2-7
The eastern program will return to Mount Tremblant in 2014 because we had a highly successful trip to this top- rated
resort during the 2012 season. You will need a current passport, but you do not need a visa.
Trip will include:
• Round trip air to Montreal
• Charter bus to Mont Tremblant
• Five nights lodging in deluxe Condominiums
• 6-day lift pass
The mountain at Mont Tremblant is an integral part of the village. We stay at a hotel that is very close to the cabriolet, a type
of ski lift that takes people to the bottom of the ski slope, within easy reach of the gondola that will take you to the top of the
mountain. When you come down to the bottom of the slope there are several restaurants and bars for après-ski refreshments.
Returning to the hotel offers two options. One is to ski down; the other is to take the cabriolet and admire the view.
Blackwater Falls, WVA PYOT - Cross Country – Friday to Sunday, January 31-February 2
Calling all Cross Country Skiers and Hikers! We’re planning an adventure to Blackwater Falls State Park near Davis, West
Virginia. We will stay in the new 4-bedroom cabins at the State Park on Friday and Saturday night. We’ll take to the crosscountry trails on Saturday and Sunday. If you need to rent XC ski gear, daily rentals are available at the Ski Center. You do not
have to be an experienced XC skier to take this trip or a superior athlete, just a person that can be comfortable on skis, who is
in reasonable shape for about two hours of outdoor experience. In case of minimal snow, the trip participants do some hiking in the area. Trip includes Friday welcome party and Saturday buffet dinner. This trip is a great value; it’s a fun trip with no
pressure! Member price: $140; Guest Price: $165. More details on the SCWDC Web site, including trip application and leader
contact information.
Elk Mountain, PA, PYOT – Friday to Sunday, February 20 - 23
Elk Mountain, Pennsylvania’s first commercial ski area (established 1959), has been perennially voted the state’s best, in
terms of snow, grooming, value, and weather. Twenty-seven sprawling slopes and trails provide challenging and diverse terrain, more suitable for Intermediate/Advanced skiers. Its advertising states, “It’s like skiing in Vermont – without the drive”.
This PYOT weekend package includes: two nights’ hotel accommodation in nearby Clarks Summit, lift tickets for two days, and
a Saturday group dinner. Driving time from the Washington DC area is about 5 hours. More details on the SCWDC Web site,
including price and leader information.
SCWDC’s One-Day SPE trips to Liberty Mountain Resort (3). This is a great trip to get going on winter skiing and riding. Each
trip includes a half day of instruction from SCWDC's ski school, separately described in this issue. You can be a beginner, intermediate, or expert, our ski school can handle it all. And for most of us, who didn't go to South America to ski this summer, we
need to get our ski legs back. So these trips are great preparation when you are going to ski a full week elsewhere. You must
sign up early because we must have a minimum number of participants or the trips will be canceled. More information is on
the SCWDC Web site, including leaders’ names and trip applications. These trips are in the price range of $79-$86 and include a
lift ticket and lunch.
What is SPE?
“SPE” stands for Ski Performance Enhancement and refers to SCWDC’s unique Ski School. How are the trips run? Participants
drive themselves to the ski site, arriving by 8:30 a.m. to meet up with the leader to receive full-day lift and meal tickets, get on
the slopes by 9:15 a.m., and begin a 2 1/2 to 3-hour lesson by 9:30 a.m. If you need rentals, arrive by 8 a.m. Lunch is included
in the price. In the afternoon, participants ski or ride on their own. What is the SCWDC Ski School and what are our instructors’
qualifications? The SCWDC Ski School is a National Member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) with 100% of
its instructors certified by either the PSIA or the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI). We currently have 16
instructors. Every trip welcomes skiers and snowboarders. What a value! Group lessons from a ski resort can range from $45$75 for a half day and include a dozen students, while our small-group SCWDC lessons are included in the trip price by adding
only a few dollars per person.

Something new and totally different, but this restaurant looks to have charm and comfort, so as we all gear up for the holiday
season – take the time to treat yourself to a nice dinner out. I found this through research, but it may be a find that will become
a favorite that we can recommend to others. The cuisine looks to be American and the Black Family Foundation seem to have
some other restaurants, so come out and enjoy. Please RSVP by phone or email by Thursday evening, November 14, so that I
can provide the restaurant with a number of attendees. Black Market Bistro, 4600 Waverly Avenue, Garrett Park, MD 20896,

You've got to come out to see this hilarious first comedy by Neil Simon, a sharp notice of things to come in his later works,
like the Brighton Beach Memoirs. Replete with all the signature Simon one-liners, jokes and satire, this funny and warm Jewish
family comedy will keep you amused and entertained. Buddy, a 21-year old tired of living with the parents, joins his brother
Alan in his New York apartment. Alan teaches Buddy the" playboy rules," and Buddy makes many girlfriends; finally taking his
brother's place as chief playboy. There is even a neighbor named Felix Unger in the play!
If there is interest, we will adjourn for light early dinner fare after the play. For directions, visit the website at www.americancentury.org, or call 703-998-4555.

matched anywhere in the region (I've checked). At this printing the play has not been selected, but you know it will be a good
one, with the actors seen serving your drinks and later on stage. This great event provides exceptional camaraderie and good
conversation, PLUS you won't have to slave over a hot stove, be solo, or deal with a lot of familial personae on this special day
of giving thanks for the blessings we enjoy. Help keep the tradition going! ! More Later! keep checking the Ski-O-Gram and the

We meet the third Thursday of each month. If you like to read, share your thoughts and opinions, socialize with nice people,
and enjoy good food—this activity could be for you. We start at 6:30 and finish by about 8 p.m. We meet in a private room

Ballston Mall Metro Station; there are low-cost parking garages and on-street metered parking (free after 6pm). The leader
for this activity is Marion Glass ([email protected]). Everyone is welcome – if you haven’t read the book – no problem –
no reservation needed, popping in is just fine.
October 17 - THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS, by Rebecca Skloot, (non-fiction, paperback, 400 pgs.)
Discussion Lead: Pat (tentative)
Summary: Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose
cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions,
yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford health insurance. This New York Times bestseller takes readers
on an extraordinary journey, from the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with
freezers filled with HeLa cells, from Henrietta’s small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia, to East Baltimore today, where her
children and grandchildren live and struggle with the legacy of her cells.
November 21 - KILLING KENNEDY: THE END OF CAMELOT, by Bill O’Reilly (non-fiction, paperback 325 pgs.)
Discussion Lead: Mary
Summary: In January 1961, as the Cold War escalates, John F. Kennedy struggles to contain the growth of Communism while
he learns the hardships, solitude, and temptations of what it means to be president of the United States. Along the way he
acquires a number of formidable enemies, among them Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and Alan
Dulles, director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In addition, powerful elements of organized crime have begun to talk about
targeting the president and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy. In the midst of a 1963 campaign trip to Texas, Kennedy is gunned down by an erratic young drifter named Lee Harvey Oswald. The former Marine Corps sharpshooter escapes
the scene, only to be caught and shot dead while in police custody. The events leading up to the most notorious crime of the
twentieth century are almost as shocking as the assassination itself.

Recreation
Lunch in Shirlington Ride
Date and Time: Sundays, 10 a.m. year-around
Distance and Difficulty: 16 miles, some hills but easy
Leader: Ron Trueworthy, [email protected]
Location: Shirlington Library/Signature Theater, 4200 Campbell Ave, Shirlington, VA 22206
Join us for lunch at one of the many restaurants in Shirlington (free parking in garages and lots on weekends). We meet
year-round on Sundays at 9:45 a.m. (for a 10 a.m. departure) on the brick plaza in front of the Shirlington Library / Signature
Theater to select a restaurant, then bike a 16 mile loop on the bike trails of Arlington (the Arlington Loop: traveling first on a
portion of the W&OD Trail, then the Custis Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Four Mile Run Trail) with a rest stop at Starbuck's in Lyon Village, and brief pauses for regrouping as needed. The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride
is pretty flat (average speed on ride is about 10-12 miles per hour; cue sheet available). We should be back by noon for lunch.
This is a friendly, social ride; new people are welcome and will soon be part of the regular group. It would be wise to bring
a helmet, water, bike lock, money for lunch, and a bicycle in good repair with properly inflated tires. If raining, icy, or temperatures below 40 degrees this ride is a no go. Please email the leader before 9 a.m. if the weather is in doubt, or if you just want
confirmation of the ride status. If you only want to eat lunch and skip the ride, we'll be glad to have you join us.
Grand Canyon Rafting – Trip of a Lifetime!
If you have ever thought about an exhilarating adventure rafting the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, you must ACT
NOW. We may already be full, but call immediately if you have interest.
Join our group of up to 20 adventurers for one of the most memorable seven days you will ever experience. We will be guided by Hatch River Expeditions on a 188 mile journey (1400 foot vertical for you skiers) rafting and camping on the Colorado
River. Past participants explode with enthusiasm and frequently return. There will be two 14-person motorized rafts (not an
exclusive SCWDC group) that expedite us through calm sections and allows time each day for easy hikes up the beautiful side
canyons. The cost is about $3,630 which includes all transportation (including nonstop round trip from Dulles), two nights’
hotel lodging, meals on the river, camping equipment, park entrance fee, guide gratuity; everything but your personal items
and a few meals.
We depart Dulles Airport June 4 for Las Vegas where we will take a scenic bus ride to our overnight lodge at Lees Ferry just
below the Glen Canyon Dam. The next morning we are shuttled to the river to start our journey. On the seventh day, we take a
helicopter out of the canyon for a shower, change of clothes, and transportation back to Las Vegas. On the morning of June 12,
we fly back to Dulles with many wonderful memories and great new friends.
Because the park service has many limitations on these trips, they fill fast and must be booked way in advance. To avoid
the possibility of having to cancel and forfeit the cost of the trip, you should get trip insurance. Travel Protectors offers a very
reasonable group rate.
Contact Bill Rakow, [email protected], 703-273-0791(H) or 703-626-6630(C) for more information and space availability.
Tennis
Tuesday Night Tennis at Wakefield Park, Annandale VA
Date and Time: Every Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Leader: Gene Lee, [email protected]
Cost: Actual costs for court rentals as determined by leader
This is a "weather permitting" event - if it is at least 50° and the courts are dry. Play begins at 5 p.m., but might start earlier.
During the summer we start as early as 4 p.m. and often play until 8 p.m.
This event is organized by email. If you are writing on the day of the event, please write before 10 a.m. If your email is not
acknowledged, you can still come - and take any space available. It's best if you write the night before. That way, if there are
special arrangements (like cancellation) you will be notified via email. To get on the email list, email Gene. We reserve courts
to accommodate the number who sign up in advance, but drop-ins are OK. Costs are shared among participants, based on court
rental fees paid to Fairfax County Park Authority. This is a self-rated social doubles format open to all levels - starting with players who can serve and return serve. We try to place everyone at their correct level; however this cannot be guaranteed. Time to
socialize after tennis continues at a local pub – at individual cost.

Tennis
Ski Club Indoor Tennis "parties" are held almost every Saturday night at tennis clubs in Virginia or Maryland from September through June. Tennis parties are social events where participants from advanced beginners to advanced players have
a chance to play and mingle while enjoying a light buffet and drinks. Ski Club members who reserve in advance with a check
mailed to the leader of that week's party, pay $18 for a Virginia or Maryland party. Non-members who make an advance reservation only pay $5 more. "Phone" reservations pay the "at-the-door” prices, $3 more. All prices are listed on the Tennis Party
Application. Walk-ins (no reservation) are welcome but a playing spot cannot be guaranteed.
Most parties are at the Fairfax Racquet Club from 7 – 11 p.m. with an additional free hour from 11 – 12 p.m. Everyone is assigned two hours of mixed and same sex doubles (three 40-minute pre-arranged matches). Free tennis lessons are sometimes
provided when courts are available. These parties are for adults 21 or older. Party attendance is a mix of very active singles and
couples from their 20s to 60s. Parties average 64 players each week but some have up to 80 in attendance. Male/female split is
close to half and half each party.
The SCWDC rating system is based on the National Tennis Rating Program ("NTRP"). If you don't know about this scale or
are not sure of your rating, or have questions about the tennis parties, contact Jack Tarr at [email protected]. Minimum skill
level is required. You must be able to keep the ball in play, serve effectively and know basic tennis tactics. Beginners are encouraged to try their local county government recreation programs or tennis clubs for lessons.
If you would like to just visit a tennis party and socialize, you are welcome. Just pay $10 at the door and you can eat, drink,
and socialize. Bring your racket and wear or bring tennis clothes and you can play from 11 - 12 at no charge. You might also
play if someone drops out of the matches. If there is an opening on the court later, you can play at no extra charge.
An advance reservation (check received) is necessary to be assured a playing spot. It also costs less. If you decide to attend
the week of the party and can't mail your check in time, call or email the leader to see if there is a spot. You'll pay at-the-door
price, which is $3 more than the advance reservation price. This is the least desirable way of joining the party, since we refund
most of the price when you have to cancel with an advance reservation. (Cancellation fees are small, graduated based on date
of cancellation, UNLESS you wait until Saturday of the party, past 5 p.m.)
Plan to arrive between 6:30 - 6:45 p.m. to check in, and we suggest you leave "earlier" than your fastest time to the club,
because of possible traffic delays along the way. If you arrive after 7:30 p.m., you may be replaced by a standby and forfeit the
entire cost of the party.
Refunds: If you have an advance reservation and learn that you can't attend, call the leader as soon possible. The refund
schedule is at the bottom of the Tennis Party Application.

Information: Sugarloaf Mountain looms above rolling farmlands about 30 miles northwest of Washington. Privately owned,
it’s managed as both a nature preserve and public recreation area. Although it attracts many visitors, they’re mostly sightseers
and picnickers who prefer the roadside overlooks and the summit. For hikers, the 3,300-acre property offers a variety of good
trails. It is wildflower beautiful in spring, green-bower scenic in summer, and turning leaf colorful in autumn. The climb up the
summit trails are well worth it due to the spectacular views! What to bring: Water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain
gear, camera. Some people like to hike with trekking poles. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Sandals and flip flops are not appropriate. Dress in layers. SugarLoaf Trail Map - http://www.sugarloafmd.com/images/maps/102709_trailmap.pdf

will see either the September or October calendar, depending on the day that you check. All of the events will be posted. The

Take time out from your Halloween scene to enjoy the wit and humor of Pat Hazell, writer of the famously funny Seinfeld
series. This fast-paced hilarious production is a salute to the Baby Boomer generation. It gracefully walks the line between
standup and theater, and restores a much-needed sense of wonder while leaving audiences laughing and savoring the past.
Thanksgiving Day Dinner – see page 9
From Joan and Ann, (Cultural co-chairs): Traditionally, SCWDC plans a Thanksgiving Day dinner at the Lazy Susan Dinner Theater. However, this year the Lazy Susan management isn’t sure that it is going to plan that event. If Lazy Susan isn’t available
(and they will know by October 1), Joan and Ann will look for another restaurant/location and place that event on the SCWDC
web site. So check the web site in October for current information. This will also be announced in the Ski-O-Gram.
New Year’s Eve Party, Dec 31
Details aren’t set yet, but a group of SCWDC members are looking at possible locations for a New Year’s Eve Party. Check the
web site for more information in October.
Delivery of the Magazine Changes From Mailed To Download
The December/January issue won’t be mailed to everyone. It will be composed just like before and it will be posted on the
web site. An email will be sent out stating that it is available for viewing or download. You, the individual member, will decide
whether to print several pages or the whole issue. Anyone who does not have email/internet access should contact the office
to be placed on a list for limited distribution of the printed magazine. This change is based on the decision of the Board of Directors to balance the SCWDC budget (this year and next) without planning to raise membership dues or prices. When you get
the email announcing the availability of the next magazine, we’ll include your username and password. The magazine is being
posted in the Member Area which password-protected.
Financial Information to Members:
It’s a Policy Manual requirement that the annual audit be furnished to members. The actual wording is, “The Treasurer shall
submit an audited financial report for all activities of the Club to be completed by September 15th. This shall be published in
the next issue of the magazine. This will include the budgets that were established for various categories at the start of the
year.” However, this year the audit will be published on the SCWDC web site, in the Member Area. Look for it in the tab, “Financial Information For Members.”
Ski-O-Gram Format Changed: What Do Think Of It?
The weekly Ski-O-Gram goes about to about one-third current members, one-third former members, and about one-third to
people who have no connection to SCWDC other than the email. During the last several years, the length of it went to 8-10-12
pages; it was like a smaller version of the magazine. Each program chair who wanted to publish an article needed to submit
copy every week, extra work. Much of the copy was for events that were held every week, and the same copy was already in
the magazine and posted on the web site. So as of September, the format has been changed to a headline format, with only a
few full-description articles published when there are unsold tickets for a near-term event, or something like a new location
for the Thanksgiving Day dinner. A survey form has been posted on the SCWDC web site to get your reaction. Also members,
please consider coming to the monthly social meetings to talk in person to the President or a member of the Board of Directors.
