chebec
Although the origin of the Chebec is not clear, it is known that in the seventeenth century the pirates from countries along the Barbary Coast used her. Also in the eighteenth century there were Spanish and French Chebecs and at the end of that century even the Russians had such ships. The Spanish, as part of there military force, started to build Chebecs in order to combat the pirates of Algeria. The model of the Spanish Chebec, exhibited at the museum in Barcelona, demonstrates elegance and swiftness. The concave shaped waterline on the bow and the outward bending gunwale indicate that it was a shallow draught ship. The question as to whether there is a relationship between the Chebec and the Caravel remains unanswered although the hulls are identicaL Also there are indications that this ship possessed common features with most of the fast sailing ships in the Mediterranean Sea. There is a painting of the much older Spanish felucca fa 3 mast, small coastal sailing shipJ showing practically no difference in the outward appearance when compared with the Chebec. One gets the impression that the Chebec evolvedfrom the Galley. The Venetian Galley was a rowing ship and carried auxiliary sails. Supposing that it was slightly wider, it may pro ve the Chebec existed before the Galley. The cross sections of the midship area of both the Galley and the Chebec have a striking resemblance. A t any rate, this Chebec was especially superb, and the oars were merely accessories. Like the other Mediterranean ships, there was a ram infront of the bow and the hurdle type deck extendedup to the oval shape stern. lnitially it was conceived that this Chebec had three masts, covered with triangle sails, but from the mideighteenth century the Morroco and French Chebecs were outfitted with square sails on the main mast. lnformation on these Chebecs can be also obtainedfrom GeneralParry's "Ship Memorandum': INSTRUCTlONS NOTE: COLOR LIST FIat Black The use of fiat type colors are Gloss Black recommended except for white.
