SPRING 2015
Meet Mike Mushett
Turnstone’s new leader is set to build
upon the accomplishments of his predecessor.
... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Mike Mushett may have a tough act to follow,
but his credentials make him the perfect
person to lead Turnstone as the center
continues to grow its adaptive sports and
recreation programs and facilities. Mike has
30 years of experience in promoting adaptive
sports and recreation, an area championed by
former Chief Executive Officer Nancy Louraine.
Mike’s familiarity with Turnstone and its
current expansion in sports programs and
facilities, his expertise in sports and recreation,
and his body of work on behalf of people
with disabilities put him on the short list of
top candidates.
“I think my experience in sports and recreation
was the overriding factor in my being given
this opportunity at Turnstone,” Mike says,
“But another determining factor was that the
focus of my career has been on improving
the quality of life for people with disabilities
in general.”
Although Mike has his own style, he intends to
build upon the legacy left by Nancy. “There’s
no doubt that Nancy left some big shoes to
fill — she set the bar high,” he says. “I’m not
the second coming of Nancy Louraine, but I
plan to build on all the great work she’s done
and continue to move Turnstone forward.”
A native of Ohio, Mike earned a bachelor’s
degree in education at Xavier University in
Cincinnati. His original goal was to teach and
coach sports, but during a student-teaching
stint at Indian Hill High School near Cincinnati,
his first assignment was teaching kids with
physical disabilities. That experience changed
everything for Mike, and he immediately went
back to earn a master’s degree in recreational
therapy at Central Michigan University. His

first professional job was as director of
an organization promoting sports and
recreation for people with disabilities in
Westland, Michigan.
But that was just the beginning;
groundbreaking work was on the horizon.
In 1992, Mike moved to Atlanta, where he
worked for the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic
Games. He served as chief operating officer
for the games, which featured 3,000 athletes,
from 102 countries participating in more than
20 sports. Subsequently, at Georgia State
University in Atlanta in the late ’90s, Mike
helped design and implement one of the first
intercollegiate wheelchair tennis programs in
the United States. He later served as the vice
president of programs for the United States
Disabled Athletes Fund, now BlazeSports
America, the legacy foundation for the 1996
Atlanta Paralympic Games.
Mike then served as director of the Paralympic
Sport Outreach and Development program
for the U.S. Olympic Committee from 2006
to 2013. Most recently, Mike was executive
director of Wheelchair & Ambulatory Sports
USA, a national nonprofit organization.
In addition to overseeing all of Turnstone’s
programs and leading fundraising, Mike is
now charged with making the most of “The
Turnstone of Tomorrow,” a $15.5 campaign
to meet the ever-growing need for sports
and recreation opportunities and facilities.
The 125,000-square-foot expansion— the
cornerstone of which is a 75,000-square-foot
field house—will enable Turnstone to grow
its offerings in adaptive sports and recreation,
aquatics, and health and wellness.
“Adaptive sports and recreation are essential
components in the lives of people with
disabilities of all ages,” Mike says. “Everyone
needs to participate, to be engaged in
activities that promote fitness, independence,
self-confidence, self-esteem, social
interaction, and overall well-being. Adaptive
sports and recreation promote all of that.”
Another goal of ”The Turnstone of
Tomorrow” campaign is to make the center
an attractive place to become an official
U.S. Paralympic training site, the first one in
Indiana. Turnstone already has a national
reputation for its sports programs and teams,
and being an official Paralympic training site
would lead to even more recognition.
“Turnstone’s being an official Paralympic
training site would be of great benefit not
just to our center, but to Fort Wayne and
northeast Indiana, as well,” Mike says.
“I’m not the second coming of Nancy Louraine, but I plan to build on all the great work she’s done and continue to move Turnstone forward.”

Setting the standard
Despite winter blast, construction well under way on world-class facilities.
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
............................................................................................................................................................
Turnstone is currently undergoing an
expansion that will provide additional
adults and children with access to fitness
and sports-activities. This project is essential
because when people with disabilities
participate in these activities, their level of
independence and overall well-being greatly
improves. The “Turnstone of Tomorrow” is
a 125,000-square-foot expansion that focuses
on meeting the ever-growing need for
opportunities in adaptive sports and
recreation, aquatics, health and wellness, as
well as an expansion of Adult Day Services.
The cornerstone is a 75,000-square-foot field
house. Project completion is expected in
July 2015.
Adaptive sports and recreation complex
The fieldhouse will include a 230-meter indoor
track, four collegiate-sized basketball courts,
and mezzanine for seating and conference
rooms. While these facilities are sports-centric,
the entire community of people with
disabilities can enjoy recreation and fitness
in this facility.
Accessible Health and Wellness Center
Demand for health and wellness facilities
designed for the unique needs of people with
disabilities is growing rapidly. Turnstone’s
expansion will double the size of its
existing Health and Wellness Center. Larger
facilities will enable the agency to more
specialized equipment and disability-specific
programming such as group classes for stroke
survivors, adaptive Pilates, and adaptive yoga.
Warm-water pool for aquatic therapy
The demand for warm-water therapy has
exceeded the capacity of the existing pool,
so Turnstone is building a larger warm-water
pool equipped with a lift and zero-depth
wheelchair ramp that will be used for pain
management, exercise, and specialized
aquatic programs for children and adults.
This new pool will be large enough for
Turnstone to offer group therapy sessions.
Turnstone is well on its way to becoming the
nation’s gold standard for empowering
individuals with disabilities. As the center of
a community of care, Turnstone will raise the
stature of Fort Wayne, create a whole new
market for visitors and tourists, and help spur
economic growth throughout the region.
Expanding the facilities to accommodate
international growth in Paralympics and
adaptive sports programs are essential to
achieving these aspirations.
