2008-2009 Annual Report - YWCA West Central Michigan
annual community report 2008 - 09 YWCA West Central Michigan 25 Sheldon Blvd., SE Grand Rapids, MI 49503 the ywca west central michigan embraces diversity, creates a safe and empowering environment for all women and children, and celebrates peace, justice, freedom and the dignity of all people. As the 2008-09 fiscal year came to a close, we reflected on what has been one of the most challenging times in our organization’s history. Circumstances required us to make heart-wrenching reductions in services and staffing. While many begin to hope that we are in the waning months of this global recession, great uncertainty remains. Despite this uncertainty, the YWCA finds great reason for optimism. Our financial management has been central to our ability to react immediately to the quickly-changing economic conditions. As a result, our core services remain intact and accessible to the most vulnerable. A professional financial review of our 2008-09 records underscored our fiscal responsibility and produced an unqualified opinion from our auditors once again. Our community knows the need for YWCA services. The YWCA’s 2008 TRIBUTE! Awards Celebration attracted 900 guests and grossed over $111,000 in sponsorships. With last summer’s funding cut from the city’s annual appropriation still fresh on supporters’ minds, an anonymous donor provided matching funds for our year-end appeal. A group of new YWCA friends, led by Paula Fogarty, took it upon themselves to refurbish our Nurse Examiner Program suite. Now, sexual assault victims have a “new” space that expresses our community’s desire to help them heal. In all that we do, we are guided by our mission - eliminating racism, empowering women and girls, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Our strategic goals strengthen our position as an Employer, Provider, Partner, and Financial Steward of Choice. We incorporate client feedback as part of our accreditation process and ongoing quality assurance objective that evaluate YWCA programs and operations. The YWCA ranks top among its peers and was one of just twelve agencies in the country chosen by the Council on Accreditation to undergo focused accreditation, a pilot review process reserved for organizations who have received exemplary scores on previous on-site reviews. The YWCA is well-positioned and well-partnered to reach those most in need and address the issues of violence which our community struggles with daily. Just a few examples of our initiatives include providing: • Culturally- and linguistically-competent domestic violence and sexual assault services with our partners Safe Haven Ministries and the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, and the Michigan Department of Human Services. • Program screening, housing case management, counseling, advocacy and additional security supports for single domestic violence survivors living at The Dwelling Place’s new Bridge Street Place. • Job coaching and additional transitional housing apartments for domestic violence victims with key funder, Kent County Department of Human Services. • Expanded outreach to domestic violence, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse survivors at private physician offices within the Grand Rapids Women’s Health Center, and medical-forensic examinations for domestic violence victims through the YWCA’s Nurse Examiner Program in collaboration with Safe Haven Ministries and our area’s Domestic Assault Response Team. In 2010, the YWCA will celebrate our 110th anniversary. It is no accident that we reached this significant milestone and continue to be a vital resource for those in need and a model for our peers. Through our past successes and current challenges, our friends and investors have been strong allies. This report is testimony to that. Sincerely, Elsa Kerr, Chairperson Board of Directors Caroline “Carla” Blinkhorn, CEO The YWCA’s Domestic Violence Services have been an integral part of our programming since 1977. We are one of Michigan’s leaders in responding to the issue of domestic violence. Our services have evolved to include crisis intervention, emergency shelter, specialized counseling for victims and assailants, programs that teach healthy parenting techniques, supervised parenting time and safe child exchange, medical-forensic examinations, and a long-term transitional housing component designed to equip women so they can better support themselves independently and live free from violence after they transition out of the shelter. For families experiencing the trauma of incest and non-familial molestation, there are the YWCA Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Services. Components of our treatment program include individual, family, marital, and group counseling, as well as, educational and support groups. YWCA services work in concert to address the issues of violence against women and children which undermine individuals, families, and our community. Noted as one of the most comprehensive programs in Michigan, the YWCA’s Sexual Assault Services include critical crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, and short-term respite services for victims unable to return home. The YWCA’s Nurse Examiner Program is also our community’s resource for medicalforensic sexual assault examinations for patients 13 years and older. Girls Incorporated ® at the YWCA West Central Michigan offers programs designed to build girls’ self-esteem and confidence, help them set boundaries, and develop healthy relationships with adults – all key elements to reducing girls’ vulnerabilty to violence. As Michigan’s first Girls Inc.® affiliate, we offer programs that teach self-defense and violence prevention; adolescent pregnancy prevention; media and economic literacy; skills to resist pressure to use harmful drugs; skills that increase self-confidence in science, math, technology and related careers; and leadership development. Elsa Kerr Chair ywca board of directors 2008 - 2009 Ingrid Jensen Vice Chair YWCA West Central Michigan board members are charged with governance of the organization. Board members actively oversee the YWCA’s finances, compliance with best practice standards, participate in private fund-raising and community outreach efforts, and develop organizational advocacy policies based on the YWCA’s strategic plan, mission, and vision. Potential new members are identified by a committee comprised of community leaders, volunteers and current board members. A slate of candidates is voted upon annually by the YWCA Board of Directors. New members are chosen based on a proven commitment to the YWCA mission and their ability to support the organization as it works to meet that mission. This committee - renamed the YWCA Board Governance Development and Nominating Committee is responsible for training opportunities for current members and standardizing outreach activities where potential board members are identified. The board’s financial oversight was key to the YWCA’s strong audit performance which resulted in receipt of an unqualified opinion for the fiscal year. Board members were active fundraisers for the YWCA, helping secure over $500,000 in private revenue. They were equally active in advocacy efforts that helped bring attention to unexpected, significant government funding cuts. 1 Deb Schutmaat Treasurer Shlynn Rhodes Secretary Lisa DeFerrari Development Committee Co-Chair Jessica Murphy Development Committee Co-Chair Caroline “Carla” Blinkhorn CEO Mary Gill-Thornton Stan Greene Gail Hammontree Mike Melinn Rachel Mraz Jacque Schafer Denise Sherwood Leonard Slott Wanda Toohey-Olave Kristin Vanden Berg program service report With comprehensive services, participation in community-based solutions and ongoing education, our vision is a community that demonstrates a commitment to creating a nurturing, violence-free environment for women and children. sexual assault services 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men will be a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime. The YWCA assisted 1,078 individuals through the range of our sexual assault services over the course of this year. Indicating a reduction in the trauma they experience, 94% of victims reported feeling supported as a result of participating in the YWCA Nurse Examiner Program or a YWCA support group. These outcomes confirm our underlying philosophy, that a nurturing initial engagement with sexual assault victims can be instrumental in their long-term recovery. As we move forward, the YWCA Nurse Examiner Program is looking to build on our partnership with the newly opened Grand Rapids Women’s Health Center in order to reach individuals in need of YWCA domestic violence services. This centralized consortium of medical practices dedicated to women’s health provides the YWCA with the opportunity to reach a population that is often less visible and thus underserved in the area of domestic violence services - specifically, women with the financial resources to seek private medical care. While this partnership is currently focused on addressing the issue of domestic violence, it provides the foundation that will be used to also support survivors of sexual assault and child sexual abuse who do not appear in other venues. child sexual abuse treatment services When a child is sexually abused, her perception of the world is altered. She loses much of her ability to identify healthy relationships, to feel justified in setting boundaries, or navigate developmental milestones into adulthood. This is the unfortunate reality for approximately 1200 children in Kent County each year. Early intervention and supportive family involvement is central to a child’s ability to heal from the trauma she has experienced and improve her long-term safety. In response, the YWCA supported 213 families (749 individuals) this year through individual and family therapy, child therapy groups, and parent therapy groups. Of the children leaving the YWCA child sexual abuse counseling services this year, 72% demonstrated an improved ability to cope with their past abuse and with daily stresses. They also showed a marked decrease in their Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms. The YWCA’s interventions are helping parents become more sensitive to how trauma impacts their child’s behavior, learn to advocate for their children, and create nurturing, safe homes. Of the cases referred to the YWCA, 98% did not require additional services because of re-abuse and 80% of children were returned to or kept in the safe care of a parent. 2 domestic violence services The YWCA’s domestic violence services saw a 12% increase over projected participation during the year. Specifically, the YWCA served 669 individuals (278 families) through our emergency shelter, transitional housing, and longer-term housing. Almost 2,700 individuals (832 families) were served via the YWCA’s 24-hour crisis line, individual therapy, support groups, assailant counseling, and safe child exchange/supervised parenting time. The YWCA is committed to maintaining the safety of victims. Our core services remain intact, accessible to the most vulnerable, and beneficial in meaningful ways. For 87% of clients participating in longer-term counseling, they report stability and safety in their homes. Of the YWCA’s clients who participated in longer-term counseling, completing a safety plan, and a service plan, 97% do not re-enter domestic violence services because of a new assault. Collaboration and partnership are central to our ability to reach domestic violence survivors where they feel most safe and supported. To this end, the YWCA has expanded its partnerships with Safe Haven Ministries, the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, and Dwelling Place. Girls who witness or experience violence are more likely to become involved in risky behaviors. Because of this, the YWCA is committed to providing girls with the skills and self-confidence they need to reduce the likelihood that they will participate in situations that put them in harm’s way. The sooner we can reach and teach girls, the better. Girls Inc.® at the YWCA West Central Michigan is proving effective in doing so. The YWCA successfully met quality assurance standards in 10 operational areas during a 2009 on-site review by the Girls Inc.® national office. A recent restructuring initiative within the Grand Rapids Public Schools provide us with the opportunity to direct programming resources to girls in middle and alternative schools. During the year, we conducted over 365 Girls Inc.® program sessions related to self-reliance and life skills, health and sexuality, leadership and community action, and economic literacy. The results have been positive. Of the girls who completed a Girls Inc.® program, 93% grew to describe themselves as valuable, and demonstrated a stronger commitment to learning, social competencies, and healthy boundaries and expectations. Looking forward, Girls Inc. ® will be expanding its partnership with Wyoming and Kentwood Public Schools. It is anticipated that 800 additional girls will be served in the coming year. 3 statement of 4 financial position (Oct. 1, 08 - Sept. 30, 09) of statement actvities (Oct. 1, 07 - Sept. 30, 08) 5 statement of actvities (Oct. 1, 08 - Sept. 30, 09) Income from outside trust funds 6 private community support address operational and emergency needs, participate in valuable strategic initiatives, and fill gaps that allows the YWCA to would otherwise remain for the women and families whom we serve. 2008 Title Sponsor Photo courtesy John Corriveau Photography. 2008 Award Honorees(l-r) Leann D.
