You can send your payment directly to the business office or donate online at www.pvs.org and click on the support button. For questions or assistance please email [email protected]. Admission Open House, Feb. 25th at 9 am: The easiest way to share all the great things our school has to offer is to invite your friends, neighbors, teammates, or anyone else who is curious about Palm Valley School to our Tuesday Morning Admission Open House. Let them know they can stop in any Tuesday from 9-11 am for a tour of the campus and to have all of their questions answered. No RSVP required. Contact Lisa Olson with questions, [email protected] or 760-3280861. Hot Lunch Schedule: The new session begins March 10th. Attached forms are due back Thurs., March 6th. They are also available at the front desk of Lower and Upper School. News from Lower School: Dear Families, it’s hard to believe it’s the hundredth day of school this Friday! Not to mention Valentine’s Day! How quickly the days move forward! There are many excellent things happening in every classroom on the Lower School Campus. This week we’ve witnessed the following as we visited our Palm Valley Lower School classrooms: a group of Kindergarten students built large numbers using colorful unifix cubes from Everyday Mathematics while outdoors on the grass. Their joyful voices filled the air with “big numbers” and big ideas! Students in First Grade learnt about Chinese New Year, practiced calligraphy and experienced Chinese math! Their faces shone with pride this week as they shared their precise efforts. Meanwhile, Second Grade students prepared for the Patriotic Performance with their teachers’ encouragement and professional guidance. How the students are growing in communication skills and emerging poise! Third Grade students completed their booklets about the body’s systems and are enjoying medical speakers from our parent community. Fourth Grade students worked hard as they practiced division arrays, drawing angles, calculating area, read and discussed Patty Read, and are learning Page 2 about magnets in science! In Fifth Grade students were introduced to positive and negative numbers in EveryDay Math, practiced vocabulary, and started their Preparation for Middle School Program. So much growing and learning takes place every minute of every day! Lost and Found: is your son or daughter missing his or her favorite hoodie or favorite polo shirt? Please take look at the Lost and Found clothing. Thank you! News from Middle School: On February 26th, all 5th Grade students will enjoy a "Moving Up Day" experience in Middle School. 5th graders will be hosted by 6th grade students who will take the 5th graders around to their morning classes with them. This will be an opportunity for the incoming 6th graders to see what a day is like in Middle School. At 3:15 PM on the afternoon of February 26th, all parents of 5th grade students are invited to join Mrs. Ferguson in the MPR for a "Welcome to Middle School" presentation followed by questions and answers. This meeting will run from 3:15-4:00 PM. Letters were sent home to parents of 5th grade students on February 3rd, 2014. If you have any questions about this event, please contact Mrs. Ferguson via email at [email protected] or by phone at 760-328-0861. Parents of MS actors and actresses! Don't forget the MS Monologue Competition scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd at John Glenn Middle School. We have 16 students signed up to participate. Registration opens at 9 am and first round begins at 10. Second round will begin after lunch. We should be done by 2-2:30 pm. Parents are invited to attend. Hamburger/Hotdog lunches will be for sale at John Glenn or you can pack yourself a healthy gourmet feast. Any questions? Email Mr. Sarkis at ([email protected]). Let's bring home some gold! News from Upper School: APs are Coming! This week, AP teachers distributed the "AP Bulletin for Students and Parents." AP students and parents (760) 328-0861/www.pvs.org should note some important points regarding Advanced Placement testing and score reporting: Earning College Credit (p. 2 of The Bulletin): regarding awarding credit for AP scores, colleges vary in their policies. Students should check that policy with their potential colleges. How to Register for the Test (p. 2): PVS does it for and with students. *Note: if a student or a family desires special accommodations while testing, that requires a pretty rigorous application process with The College Board that is not done speedily. Families should see Ms. Zachik ASAP. Scores (p. 3): Do note the breakdown of scores: 5 = extremely well qualified, 4 = . . .etc. Prohibited in the Exam Room (p. 3): Smartphones! Textbooks! Notes! Teachers! Compasses! Mechanical pencils! Correction Fluid! Dictionaries! Highlighters! Colored pencils! Scratch paper! Clothing with subject-related information! No food or drink in the testing room (that includes water). All are cause for immediate dismissal from the test (for which you've spent 9 months preparing--who wants that?!). What to Bring to the Exam Room (p. 5): Several sharpened #2 pencils Pens with black or dark blue ink Our six-digit school code (052321) A watch that does NOT beep or have an alarm Up to two approved calculators (for Calculus, Chemistry, Physics) A ruler or straightedge for AP Physics (NO protractors) Getting Your Scores (p. 8): Students should sign up for a College Board account at collegeboard.org/apstudents. Scores are ONLY available online. Students should check apscore.org to find out when they can access their scores in July. Sending Scores (p. 8): On the first AP answer sheet a student fills out (their registration answer sheet), he or she can indicate a college or university to receive his or her score report for no additional cost. If a student chooses not to indicate a score report recipient on his/her AP answer Page 3 sheet but wants to send a score report to a college at a later time, he or she can do so for a fee. The fee for ordering additional score reports is $15. AP Student Checklist 2014 (p. 9): Students should tear off this page and put it on the refrigerator. Reminder: Students will be AP testing the first two weeks of May. These tests can qualify students for college credit and figure well into college admissions. We do want to congratulate the PVS EnglishSpeaking Union Shakespeare Monologue winners: Senior Emerson Harris, Senior Jake Phillips, and Senior alternate Sarah Chaffins. Emerson and Jake will advance to valley wide competition on March 1st at Shadow Hills High School. The winner advances to New York City and will perform at Lincoln Center (Jake's been there before - let's see what happens!). Upper School students interested in attending the Karl Rove Desert Town Hall Lecture on March 6th at the Esmeralda should contact Ms. Zachik. The RSVP is due Monday, February 24th. Four spots remain. Upper School students buy your tickets now! PVS Winter Party 2014, Friday, February 28th, 2014 at The Hyatt Palm Springs. Only $20 per single ticket, $35 per couple. Get your signed permission form into the front desk now! Great food, music, friends and prizes! Juniors and Parents, a friendly reminder. The best time to take the SAT is during the spring of your Junior year! Many students also decide to take the SAT again in the fall of their Senior year. Juniors please register NOW, to take the SAT and SAT Subject tests this spring. Test Dates: March 8th - register by February 7th. (SAT and Subject Tests) May 3rd - register by April 4th. Please see Mr. Kulevich with any questions. Raquel Homec at 760-578-0863 or [email protected]. College: Financial aid applications, requirements and deadlines vary from school to school, however, you will need to complete the FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov) and some schools require the CSS/Profile (http://student.collegboard.org/ccfincial-aid-profile) and/or their own application. Check with each of your colleges. Mr. Kulevich will automatically send your mid-year grades to every college where you have an active application. Please give him a call, if you have any questions regarding the FAFSA. Or contact FAFSA customer service directly at 800-433-3243. Girl Scout Cookies: Girl Scout Cookies are on sale!
