Classes are June 23rd through July 3rd. You may sign up for individual weeks or all three weeks. Please find attached a flyer at the back of the Phoenix or contact Mrs. Leany @[email protected] for more information. We will be artist, chefs, and travelers. The weeks go quickly so sign up before May 27th. Yearbook: The 2013-2014 Digital Yearbook is now on sale! It will have a flash drive inside the cover of the printed book which contains a file that plays as a DVD. Please fill out the flyer and return with payment of $60 to the Front Office at the MS/US School. News from Lower School: Campaign for Tomorrow: Support PVS and the Campaign for Tomorrow, purchase a brick and help pave the way for a brighter future. Tax-deductible bricks make a great gift for promotion, graduation or permanent memorial. See the form attached or pick one up at the Upper School Front Office. Admission Open House, May 27th at 9am: The easiest way to share all the great things our school has to offer is to invite your friends, neighbors, teammates, or anyone else who is curious about Palm Valley School to our Tuesday Morning Admission Open House. Let them know they can stop in any Tuesday from 9-11 am for a tour of the campus and to have all of their questions answered. No RSVP required. Volume 2013/2014 Issue 33 May 23, 2014 Mrs. Van Vliet’s Kindergarteners are busy building their own city News from Middle School: On June 10th, after the MS/US Awards assembly, the Middle School students will be going to the Wet 'n' Wild Water Park for our end-of-the-year activity. We are still looking for parents to help with carpooling students to the water park at 10 am that morning. If you can help with this, please contact Mrs. Ferguson at school. Congratulations to our 6th grade class for qualifying for a pizza party as a reward for their participation in our Palm Valley golf tournament. The party will be at lunchtime on June 5th at the tables near the snack bar. All 6th grade students will not need to bring a lunch that day as pizza, drinks, and dessert will be provided free of charge. Thank you, 6th grade class and parents. Graduation Information Notices are attached to this edition of The Phoenix. Please access and read over the instructions as all students and families are encouraged to attend our Graduation Exercises on June 11th at 6:00 pm at the Westin Mission Hills Resort. Please pay special attention to the dress code for each grade level for this important community ceremony. As the end of the year approaches, students are encouraged to begin cleaning their lockers and taking home materials not needed for classes. Early efforts here make the last day clean-up much less hectic for students and for staff. June Exams begin on Monday, June 2nd. Please see the Exam Schedule attached to The Phoenix this week and for the next 2 weeks. Students will be given review outlines in their classes and review will begin in earnest after the Memorial Day weekend. A whole hearted thank you to the Palm Valley parents who, by their selfless gifts of time, money, and energy, made the Middle School play a record-breaking success this year. The talented team of parents, teachers, administrators, and students have given a delightful gift to the School community that has created unity, enlivened spirits, elevated public opinion, and bequeathed a positive memory that will be enjoyed for years to come. Human beings all declaring they’re for caring and for sharing Fireworks and rockets flaring in the air" News from Upper School: Congratulations to junior Youn Jun Ben Cho. Ben won the grand trophy at last Saturday's Palm Springs Rotary-sponsored Chess Tournament! Ben was the grand champion of the Youth Page 2 Category. Ben went five rounds in five hours. This was a United States Chess Federation sanctioned and rated tournament and drew players from all over Southern California. The Crystal Ball Prom is Saturday at the Westin Mission Hills, 8-11:30 pm. Grab your guy, your girl, your tux, your corsage. All seniors and senior parents, join us for the Final Senior Breakfast Parent Potluck on Friday, May 30th, after Morning Assembly on the Upper School Courtyard. There will be "Moonwatch" music and the beginning of fond goodbyes. Join the Upper School Book Club for a discussion of The Fault In Our Stars on Friday, May 30th, at lunch in the MPR. There will be Pepsi, pillows, and popcorn, and good reading company. The senior class will meet at PVS at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 31st, to take off via luxury bus to DISNEYLAND'S GRAD NITE! Seniors will be up all night and will return approximately 5 a.m. See Mr. Kulevich for any lastminute questions. Seniors! Don't delay! Mr. Sackett needs six photos for your end of year Senior slide show and yearbook page. Please bring to him the originals or on a flash drive, you can even email them to him at [email protected] or [email protected]. Baby photos, Kindergarten photos, 6th grade photos, 9th grade photos, 12 grade photos. Any questions, please see Mr. Kulevich or Mr. Sackett. Library: Please scour your shelves and your children's rooms for any school library books! Notices have gone home in folders this week. If any books seem to have gone missing, please replace. Amazon.com is a great resource for reasonably priced books. Thank you for maintaining our collection. Parent Association: Parent Association Reimbursements are due by Tuesday, June 3th, 2014. Please turn in all approved expense reimbursements to the Parent Association box located in the Lower School office. The request should include the PA Reimbursement Form, receipts, and signature of appropriate PA Board Member. Please include a contact email address and summer mailing address. Thank you. The Parent Association would like to say "thank you" to all our wonderful volunteers who have helped throughout the school year. If you drove on a field trip or sporting event, brought treats to a party, hosted a senior breakfast, shelved books in the Library, coordinated an event or helped in ANY way, please join us and let us show you our appreciation. Jackie Sutton led the team and the league in runs scored in a season with 38 and had a batting average of .568 which was 2nd highest on our team. Seline Schinke - most strikeouts in season with 36. Most homeruns in a season with 5. Tied the standing firebird record of 11 strikeouts in one game. Some of the Softball girls smile with their League Awards Soccer: The parents defeated the students in a penalty kick shoot-out by the score of 4-3. This was an exciting culmination to a season that saw the PVS middle school soccer team compile a 11-1 record. Way to go Firebirds! A hearty Thank You from the Athletics Department goes to Mrs. Barbato for her 3-years as 'team photographer'. Thank you very much! GO FIREBIRDS! Softball: Firebird team season records broken: batting average, runs scored, hits scored, RBI's, doubles, home runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage 4 New single game records: runs, RBI's, slugging percentage, strikeouts. Individual player records broken: Christina Romo: batting average of .673, slugging percentage of 1.036, she had 37 hits, scored 36 runs and got 13 extra bases on hits. Also led league in RBI's with 42.
