Admission Open House, March 11th at 9 am: The easiest way to share all the great things our school has to offer is to invite your friends, neighbors, teammates, or anyone else who is curious about Palm Valley School to our Tuesday Morning Admission Open House. Let them know they can stop in any Tuesday from 9-11 am for a tour of the campus and to have all of their questions answered. No RSVP required. The month of March holds so much learning, and an equal measure of socializVolume 2013/2014 Issue 23 March 07, 2014 ing. Across the grades our students are growing, learning, and thriving! Students are: traveling the desert environment on a guided jeep tour, exploring Mission San Juan Capistrano, participating in Grandparents’ Day through song, creating silent films for social science, solving the area of squares, parallelograms, and trapezoids, reading biographies of famous scientists, eating and reading Green Eggs and Ham, reading and sharing The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles and much more!!! Congratulations to Lower School student Lucca Jacome, whose artwork was selected by the city of Rancho Mirage for their Race to Be Ready! All families are now able to sign in to check their child’s progress in the Accelerated Reader program. This makes it possible for you to see both the quizzes taken and your child's overall performance. Please take a look! If you have any questions, please contact Joan Black at [email protected]. The end of the year is coming up, buy your Lower School Yearbook today. Information went home with the students on Friday or you can find it in the front office. The hardcover book is $25, it has 100 pages filled with all the memories from this school year. Don't miss out all orders must be in by April 30th. If you would like to send a message to your son or daughter in the yearbook please see the attached form or pick one up in the office. All messages must be in by March 31st, 2014. Please complete the application that went home on February 28th, and bring it to the office. Students can audition on Monday, April 21st, from 3:30- 4:30 in the gym. If the date and time conflict with your schedule, please contact Mrs. Black to setup another time. All acts and costumes must be approved, and they must be appropriate for all ages. A practice and full dress rehearsal will be held on Wednesday, April 23rd, from 3:305:00pm in the gymnasium. The Talent Show is scheduled for Friday, April 25th, at 6:00 pm in the gym. Parent Association has kindly offered to prepare their traditional ice cream social to follow he performance. News from Middle School: "Jackie Robinson Day" at Petco Park: Permission slips with all the information about our all-Middle School trip to San Diego for the Padres-Colorado Rockies baseball game on April 15th, 2014, were sent home on Wednesday this week with students. Look for a bright red flyer with all the information and a permission slip portion to be returned to Mrs. Ferguson no later than March 20th, 2014. The entire Middle School is looking forward to this special activity which is a culminating activity of last October's "Jackie Robinson Week" focusing on respectful behavior. News from Upper School: Parents and Juniors, please schedule two mandatory meetings with Mr. Kulevich between now and June 13th. We will go over your list of colleges and your game plan for the summer. Let's talk about applications, essays, community service, summer programs, financial aid, etc. Testing Information: SATs are on March 8th; May 3rd (subject tests); June 7th (subject tests). Please take the SATs at least three times. I'm looking forward to seeing you during parent-teacher conferences and then again before June. If you want acceptances, you have to work on a plan now. I'm here to help! Art: Congratulations are in order for Senior Tamy Lin. Her art has been entered into The Palm Springs Art Museum Show "The Unknown". Contest Places and Scholarships to be announced in May. Celebrations are already being held for 3rd grader Lucca Jacome and 8th grader Jillian Barbato. Tuesday, March 4th they were honored at Rancho Mirage Library for winning the "Race to be Ready" medal and tshirt design. On March 30th the kids will also be present at the 5k race and given a hundred dollars for their prize. Check out the race-to-beready.com website for race information. College: Financial aid applications, requirements and deadlines vary from school to school, however, you will need to complete the FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov) and some schools require the CSS/Profile (http:// Page 2 student.collegboard.org/cc-fincial-aid-profile) and/or their own application. Check with each of your colleges. Mr. Kulevich will automatically send your mid-year grades to every college where you have an active application. Please give him a call, if you have any questions regarding the FAFSA. Or contact FAFSA customer service directly at 800-433-3243. Parent Association: The PA Nominating Committee will be meeting in March to prepare the slate of candidates for next year’s PA Board. Please join us in thanking our teachers for all they do throughout the year by bringing in your favorite Asian Fusion dish to our Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, March 14th, 2014. Preschool: (6) platters of sushi servings 8-10. Lower School Grades JK – 2nd : 4-5 platters serving 8-10 of Chicken Dishes - Some ideas: Asian chicken lettuce wraps, Orange chicken, Chicken satay. Lower School Grades 3rd – 5th : 4-5 platters serving 8-10 Beef Dishes – Some ideas: Beef and broccoli, Beef satay, Braised short ribs. Middle School: 4-Salads serving 8, 4Rice dishes serving 8, 4-Noodle dishes serving 8. High School – Drinks & Desserts: 3 cases of each Water/Tea, 4 platters of Brownies, 4 platters of cookies. Volunteers: Two volunteers for set up at 10:30 am; Two volunteers for cleanup at 1:00 pm. Please remember to provide serving utensils and use disposable pans/dishware when possible. SPORTS RESULTS: Boys A-Team Basketball: The team successfully won against Sacred Heart in the finals and took the Championship for the third year in a row with a nail-biting 45-42 victory. Chandler Barbato’s 27 points, along with the excellent rebounding and aggressive play by Jaxon Jabara, Marcelo Lopez and Izak Weintraub had all of the parents on the edge of their seats the entire game. It was a battle to the finish and because of the intense focus of the entire team and the excellent direction by Coach Ward Blanchard, PVS maintains its title as League Champions.
