We will be starting our next session on Wed. March 30th Contact: Andrea Woore, Grief Facilitator at 909-261-3487 Debby Leonardo, Pastoral Care at 909-987-9312 Ext 302 The Catholic Community of St. Peter & St. Paul Church 9135 Banyan Street Alta Loma, CA 91737 909-987-9312 Parish 909-980-9404 Fax www.stpeterstpaul.com Dear Holy People of St. Peter and St. Paul Parish: Our Parish Mission Statement reminds us of our spiritual identity and baptismal call, it says: “We, the people of St. Peter and St. Paul Parish… are committed to living the challenges of the gospel message.” By being “committed to living the gospel message” is seeing the Church as a body not just looking out for itself, but going forth and giving of itself: “feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, clothing the naked, welcoming the strangers, caring for sick, and visiting those in prison”. (Mt 25:35-36). One noble concrete way of being “committed to living the gospel message” in this “Jubilee of Mercy” is participating in the Diocesan Development Fund (DDF) Campaign of the Diocese of San Bernardino. The DDF is a sacrificial giving program of the diocese. It is the primary source of income for our Bishop Gerald Barnes. The DDF provides him the funding required to undertake the many programs, services and ministries that are needed by more than one million Catholics spread throughout the two counties of San Bernardino and Riverside which comprise our diocese. Last 2015 DDF Campaign, we surpassed our goal. Indeed, we did it together! Your cooperation last year was overwhelming. When we were short of our goal, and we appealed to you, your generosity was overflowing. And from the bottom of our hearts (Parish’s leadership), we say, “THANK YOU” for your never-ending generosity. And today, I would like to inform you that our 2016 DDF goal given to us by the Diocese is $138,400.00. I am very confident that we can go beyond our goal this year. This confidence is reinforced by my faith in God and faith in you – the parishioners of St. Peter and St. Paul Parish. Your collaboration this year is very much needed again. Remember that all monies raised above our goal are returned to the parish. They will be used for the many needs of the parish; and it will help us service the debt of the parish to the diocese. As a parish family, I am requesting you if you can find within your means to make a sacrificial pledge or a one time gift for the 2016 DDF Campaign. Please be assured that your gift, regardless of its size, will play a very important part in our parish’s accomplishing its mission for the good of all. Remember, when you make your pledge, you are significantly living your being “committed to living the challenge of the Gospel message,” you experience the “call to ongoing conversion”, and you live the spirit of stewardship by using your “gifts for the benefit of the community and loving service to one another.” Sincerely in the service of the Lord, Fr. Romeo N. Seleccion, MS Pastor Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Is God calling you to become Catholic? January 31, 2016 Tagalog Corner - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 It begins with an awareness...or stirring in one’s heart for something more. It could be a curiosity or a sense of long for fulfillment. Maybe it’s God calling you to explore the life of faith, love, and justice within the community of the Catholic Church. The RCIA process offers an opportunity for you to learn and ask questions about the Catholic faith. It is primarily for the un-baptized, but also includes a special tract for those baptized in another faith tradition. We also invite inquiring Catholics to also come and join us for refreshers on what they learned as children. We meet all year round. Please come and join us Tuesday evenings from 7:30PM to 9:30PM in the Parish Library. For more information on the process, please call Danny or Vicki Centurioni at 909-987-7971 Marriage Moments: It's cold outside. Have a memory party inside. Pull out old photographs and enjoy. Maybe even organize those lose photos. RCIA - What is a Purificator ? A linen or Hemp cloth, anywhere from twelve to eighteen inches long and nine to ten inches wide. A small cross is frequently embroidered in the center. The Purificator is used for various purposes during the celebration of the Eucharist. The Priest may use it as a napkin when consuming the consecrated bread and wine, the Body and Blood of Christ. When the laity share in the cup the purificator may be used to wipe the rim of the chalice or cup after each person consumes. Hence, the purificator serves a practical purpose at the Lord’s Table. Feb. 29th @ 7pm-8:30pm St. Mel Parish – 4140 Corona Ave., Norco, CA 92860 WHO IS JESUS? GOSPEL REFLECTIONS ON THE MEANING OF JESUS FOR US TODAY SCRIPTURE STUDY FOR WINTER/SPRING, 2016 We call Jesus the Christ, “the Anointed One,” but who really was he and why has he had such an impact on the world? His vision for the world as it should be and his knowledge of and relationship to God, his “Father,” are as compelling today as they were some 2000 years ago. Our scripture study gives an overview of what is known about Jesus from the Scriptures, the historical record of his time, in order to gain a more complete picture of Jesus and his message. Each week we focus on a specific image/title for Jesus through a key Gospel passage that will offer us another piece of the puzzle of who Jesus is and the meaning he has in our own lives and also in our world today, so that we can more strongly affirm that Jesus is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Our Scripture Study continues on Monday evenings, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm in the St. Augustine room of our JPII Center and for those who prefer a study during the day, Thursday mornings, from 9:00 – 10:30 am in our parish Library. There is a minimal fee for our textbook. Please bring your Bible. For further information, please contact Mary Ann Andel at 909-987-9312 x 250. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For the first four centuries or so, there seems not to have been a sense of marriage as a church institution. Christians followed civil law, which kept the wedding in a family setting. Bishops wanted people to be good citizens insofar as possible, and so they recognized the government’s role in marriage. In general, they expected Christians to know that marriage was good, that marriage to other Christians was best, and to take it easy on the wild wedding parties. They agreed that marriage was a divine institution, that Christ blessed it especially, and they loved referring to the miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. Still, even when Christianity became the official religion of the empire in 380, marriage remained a family matter. On wedding days people gathered in the bride’s house, where the father would “give her hand” to her husband, draping a garland of flowers over the couple. There were no official words to say, there was no blessing to be given. Everyone walked in procession to the bride’s new home for the concluding rites and the feast. In the Eastern Empire, it soon became customary to invite a priest or bishop to give a blessing at the meal or the day before. It was a nice thing to do, completely optional, but had a “photo-op” feel to it that was widely emulated. Before long, at least in the East, it looked as if the priest were joining the couple in marriage and blessing the union. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. DIVORCED, WIDOWED, & SEPARATED WOMEN & MEN “Yesterday is experience, tomorrow is hope…today is getting from one to the other” Any adult who is currently experiencing (or within the last 3-4 years), a separation, divorce or widowhood is invited to join this group, there is no age limit. This was a much needed and active support group here at St. Peter & St. Paul from 1982-2002. Unfortunately, our spouses die and so does love, so the need for this ministry is still viable today. There will be discussions on various topics that affect the group’s needs and you will have the chance to share, if you like, with others that are having to cope with many of the same situations and emotions as you are. It takes time but you will begin to realize that there is life after death of a marriage or death of a spouse. By the bond of our Catholicism, and your ministering to each other through your sharing, trust, and respect for each other through Christ, group members will accept their situation, learn from it, heal, and forgive. You will move forward with peace and happiness in your hearts to the new plan God has for you. Please call if you would like more information. This sickness may be physical, mental or emotional. Anyone of any age can receive the Sacrament as often as needed, but not usually not less than a 3 month period. Unfortunately, many still refer to this Sacrament as the “Last Rites” and often call the parish for a priest when an individual is critical and close to end of life. The Church has not used the term “Last Rites” since the Vatican II Council; asking the faithful to call for a priest when in the need of Healing. One of the realities of the Church today is a priest shortage. If a call is made to the Church for the Sacrament, when someone is close to the end of life, there might not be enough time for a priest to reach the person prior to them passing away, or a priest might not be available, at that important moment. Only a priest can offer the Sacrament of the Sick. A Deacon is not permitted to administer the rite of this Sacrament because it includes the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Church will do everything possible, in case of an emergency. However, it may be difficult if it is “last minute”. May this be a reminder to take advantage of the healing Sacraments of the Church~ For Sacrament of the Sick … Please contact the Parish Office at 909-987-9312 During hours the office is closed, call 909-532-3312 for Emergencies Military Photo Update If you have a family member actively serving our country and would like their picture included in the Military Frame of our Soldiers honoring our Men and Women for their service; please bring a photo of your Soldier to the Parish Office and fill out the Military Personnel Information Form. The Military information consists of their rank, stationed location, branch of service, address of soldier, along with Parish family contact. These photos provide the community with recognition of those parishioners and family members serving in the military. Many of our parishioners will keep the names and faces in their hearts and prayers, along with all of our Military Men and Women serving our country.
