2) Kelly LeBrock took over the world.
Actually, she not only scored a 10 in pulchritude,
Hall and Oates wrote “Maneater” specifically for Kelly.
Kelly’s talents and commitments have grown since
then. Reality TV, her own TV show--Kelly’s Kitchen-and her dedication to helping to feed the hungry.

Craig Woolard & the Embers along
with Kelly LeBrock and foodtweeks!
Like Kelly, Craig Woolard has a long history of philanthropic projects, mostly under the radar. This time
however, Craig is fully in the public limelight in his
commitment to helping to feed hungry families through
foodtweeks whose mission is “small changes. big difference.”
Together they presented a request and opportunity
November 9th to the Carolina Beach Music Awards audience at the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach to join
foodtweeks and BeachMusicCares in feeding hungry
families.

Buddy Edwards - longtime contributor to Beach
Music Radio in Whiteville, NC
Steve Leonard - the first part of his career was com-
ish Galleon. He said he was tired of pissing people off.
Maybe so. Although there were two or three pointed
zingers, it was his most milquetoast poem ever. A vanilla wafer atop the Flaming Banana Fosters he served
up the previous nine years.
I may not have been his biggest fan, but I admired
him as much as any other. The last “funny poet” I en-
prised of a live Sunday Beach Show from a nearby bar
and simulcast on a Richmond, Virginia radio station.
After a couple of years out of the business, Steve returned
and is as busy as ever.
Wally Mullinax - Started his Ebony Swing Show in
Greenville, SC in 1950. Although Wally was primarily
a country DJ, his Ebony Swing Show was as deep and
wide as Rhythm and Blues could get, until he switched
back to country full time in the late 50s.
Jerry Wayne - the Big Guy of Beach Music in down
east NC until his early demise.

well as leader of the Shadows in the 50s & 60s. ***

joyed was Percy Dovetonsils, Poet Laureate (Ernie Kovacs
in a set of bottle-top glasses on his 1961-1962 show).
I think my greatest regret in seeing Jim go is my
misgivings about the future of humor at the Carolina
Beach Music Award weekends of the future.
Jim swam into view at the Cammys, then CBMA, in
the wake of the Sara Helms Award, Curtiss and Peter
Carpenter’s category for humor saluting Sarah Helms
and family in 1997, then Carrot Top 1998, John Boy
and Billy 1999, Bob Lacy and Sheri Lynch 2000, Willie
P. Richardson 2001, John Clark (Doug Clark & the Hot
Nuts) 2002, and Billy Smith 2003. Jim’s first poem
was 2005.
I’m not sure why the Sara Helms award is discontinued, especially considering our universal love of humor
(OK, there are some people who don’t like it. They are
also people who couldn’t tell a joke with a gun to their
head. And who, like the movie about 13th century
monks in Italy, The Name of the Rose, they probably think
that Jesus never laughed).
Until Jim Quick’s poem was launched, the funniest
man in Beach Music, and he still is top drawer, is Earl
Dawkins of the Entertainers.
Somehow humor, especially the creative sort, has been
drying up and blowing away from the Cammys.
There could be more and I think most people would
appreciate it!
The CBMA’s big Sunday show is emceed by Larry
Sprinkle of Charlotte. He’s done some funny skits in
the past - much more than have blossomed in recent
shows, but let there be no doubt, we see only the tip of
the iceberg when it comes to his comedic talent. I count
myself fortunate to have seen some of his Near-Legend
spoofs and performances in the past, and as recently as
two months ago he pulled the rug out from under me
over the telephone pretending to be the Lady editor of a
magazine in Florida.
Over the years, Chad Sain, Joey Warren, Ray Scott,
and of course Jim Quick, have come up with skits that
were fabulously inspired.
By the way, one of the men at the back of the room at

The original manuscript of Shagging In the Carolinas was 228 pages long, 100 pages more than Arcadia
publishing wanted. Fessa’ Hook had to eliminate 200
(!) pictures, photo captions/stories to meet their requirements.
This is an opportunity to retrieve what was lost.
Not only that, but these and future stories in the ‘Soul
Dancer’ Series will be uncensored. (“Hell with ‘em if
they can’t handle a dose of Reality”).

each be 75 minutes. Stories we just don’t have time to

But now we’re facing 2015. What does Quick’s res-

First, let’s look at the tradition to which he belongs,
point to the ridiculous in an attempt to mix a bit of
truth with laughter.

Mark Twain’s “Letters From the Earth” were published

It was a way of ‘letting off steam,’ sometimes for the

Gods down to human form.’
The bottom line for the Beach Music culture is this,

intimacy.

Social satire also requires courage.
Mark Twain’s social commentary was replaced by Will
Rogers, the Cowboy Philosopher for several decades.
To be ‘funny,’ a satirist has to have the courage to

There’s another word for this phenomenon - authen-

Rush Limbaugh can be a hoot when he’s in the mood

As Jim announced during the latest CBMA, “I’m just
