We will miss Mom in every breath. But it was wonderful to see so many of her friends from the village come and celebrate her life. Moving to the village over 38 years ago was a marked change from town life. However, the village and community always made Mom Dad (and myself ) feel good. Mom and Dad (Henry) made some good friends. When they needed help the friends and the community were there for them. I would particularly like to say a big thank you to the Rev Mark. He has administered to my Mom at St Josephs for many months and was with her as she passed. The commitment in her spiritual care was important to both Mom and us as a family. My sister and I attended communion the weekend of my Moms passing and found much comfort in Marks words and his passion and power of delivery of old, but meaningful sermon. It uplifted us at a time when we were deeply grief stuck. 2 Stafford Road Gnosall • • • • One Bedroom. Lounge, Kitchen, Conservatory, Bathroom Full gas fired central heating UPVC Double glazing Garden The property will be available from 1 January 2014 Age restrictions will apply Thanks to Mark for a wonderful service as we all said goodbye to our lovely Mom. All there remarked how wonderful it had been and if a funeral could be lovely – that was it. Finally thanks to those who donated to our charities, the collection has raised almost £300 for the RNLI and British Heart Foundation. The RNLI is particularly close to all of our hearts. I recall standing on cold and rainy streets on Flag Day with Mom, being told to stop complaining there were people who needed the help and we should be grateful to people who gave their time in the service of others. How true that is. Kathy Nicholls Sid Powell would like to wish his family, friends and neighbours A Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year APOLOGIES From Editor Acknowledgements last month should have been to Bob Winfield for his photographs. Cllr Mark Winnington committed to supporting a Steering Group to explore this and has since made arrangements for a feasibility study. At the beginning of January 2014, he called a meeting of the Steering Group (hosted by the Parish Council at the Grosvenor Centre), which was attended by some 30 people. They had the chance to share and discuss their views on the pool as a community facility and what the feasibility study might include. They put forward a number of areas they would like to consult the local (and wider) community about, which will be developed into questionnaire – to get information to feed into the feasibility study. You will hear more about this in due course but if you would like any information in the meantime, please contact Sarah Garner, Community Partnership Officer on 07807 137125 or [email protected] Nurse Helene OBE Gnosall nurse Helene Donnelly reacted in disbelief when she heard she had been awarded the OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list. “I am thrilled to have been recognised in the honours list, not just for myself, but for all those who have and are continuing to raise concerns on behalf of patients and health care staff,” said Helene. Helene moved to Gnosall with her husband and two children in 2012 and “absolutely loves the village”. The award is in recognition of her work to support NHS staff who try to improve patient care. She was recently appointed the first Ambassador for Cultural Change by the Staffordshire and Stoke-on Trent Partnership NHS Trust. “It is only by raising concerns and action being taken as a result, that improvements can be made to healthcare provision. As a nurse, it is important to act as an advocate for patients, and that is all that I did,” she said. Helene previously worked in the A&E department at Stafford Hospital and following her experience and difficulties in trying to raise issues there, she was a key witness at the Public Inquiry into the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. In her new role, Helene has a clear remit from Trust Chief Executive Stuart Poynor and the Trust Board to act freely and with complete autonomy from the management team as another route for matters of concern to be raised at the highest level. She has been encouraged to visit hospitals and clinics across the organisation as widely as possible. She will also be gathering feedback about how staff feel, if they feel listened to, and what might prevent staff from raising concerns. After qualifying as a staff nurse in 2002 and working in various health care settings, she became a Nurse Practitioner in the A&E department at Stafford in 2005. “ During my time there I became increasingly concerned about the poor standards of patient care and the low morale of staff. When I tried to report issues they were routinely ignored and no action was taken. This left me feeling very frustrated and led me to raise my concerns more formally within the Trust. “ Despite the well documented problems at Stafford, Helene says she has great faith in the nursing profession and the NHS in general. "I hope we are all working in health and social care because we care about delivering a high quality, caring service to our patients. We have a duty to act as advocates for the people we care for and this sometimes means speaking out when things are not right! But in order for all staff to feel able to do this I believe we need to feel truly listened to, supported and protected. "Through my own difficult personal experience I am clear that there is so much more that can be done to raise awareness and support staff who want to raise concerns. In my new role as Ambassador for Cultural Change I hope the situations I faced at Stafford, and what I learnt from them, can really help to encourage a more open and transparent culture across the Partnership Trust. 5 Best Kept Village 2014 Gnosall Winners 2010, Haughton Winners 2011, 2012 and 2013! David Lang In 1939 I was sent from London to live with relatives in Perthshire, and the following year for the first time helped gather up the corn crop. I particularly recall that as the uncut corn narrowed to a few yards most of the workers stopped stooking and stood with sticks. As the last few cuts were taken the rabbits came pouring out and many were killed with sticks. In wartime days a rabbit was a welcome addition to the meat ration. Normally, in Scotland the school summer holidays were from the end of June to the end of August, a whole eight weeks. But from 1940 or 1941 the holiday was cut into two four week periods, the second part being from mid August and known as the potato holiday, which also covered the corn crop. In 1943 l spent that period on a farm overlooking Loch Tay, where there was no electricity or gas. Cooking was done on a range and all lighting was by paraffin. I recall that the hay had been gathered on two four legged wooden frames about eight feet high to dry. To take it to the barn the farmer had a cart with a flat platform which could be tilted so the end could be lowered to the bottom of the frame, which was then pulled over onto the cart for transport to the barn where the hay was stored loose. When the corn round the edge of the field was cut with a scythe I had to gather it into sheaves which were tied with the corn itself. You took two handfuls of corn, twisted the heads together, scooped up a sheaf and tied the corn rope round, twisting the ends together and tucking the end back into the sheaf so it did not untie. The farmer did not have his own tractor or reaper so we had to await the arrival of the government tractor, the timing of which depended on how the previous farms were affected by rain. The driver bedded down at each farm for two or three nights. By the time the reaper arrived the crop was partially laid flat because of the amount of wind and rain that year, so the reaper was fitted with crop lifters in front of the cutters. These were wooden poles about three feet long with metal tips which sloped back towards the reaper at an angle of thirty degrees. On sloping fields the cutting was uphill only, but in spite of the lifters the sheaves were coming out tangled together and I had to run alongside the binder pulling the sheaves apart. This was very tiring but I got a lift downhill standing on the towbar. This nearly cost me my heel as my foot slipped and my heel was pinched between two parts of the drawbar as the tractor turned to go downhill. Fortunately the driver realised the problem and straightened up enough to release my foot. No health and safety in those days. I do not think there was anyone sitting on the reaper to set the cutting height. The rain kept coming at nights and on the following day, when the wind had dried the outside of the sheaves we went round the field turning the sheaves and restooking them. This was done two or three times. When the sheaves were finally dry leading in was helped by several neighbours. The farmer had three horses, and I and a couple of lads had the services 7 of a quiet mare with a smallish cart. We were not very good at it. On one occasion I rode on top of the load to hold it in place, But it slipped and I fell to the ground, fortunately landing on all fours without injury. Another time we got too much load at the back and the mare was nearly lifted off her feet by her belly band. We sat on the shafts to restore the balance. On another day I was pitching the sheaves onto a large cart where a grumpy old farmhand was laying them out. He was bad tempered because I was not very skilled with the pitchfork and I had difficulty placing the sheaves just where he wanted them. But even worse was that once I absent mindedly clicked my tongue loudly. This was a signal for the horse to move on to the next stooks. As the farmhand was bending over arranging the load. He nearly shot over the back of the cart. and verbally indicated that he was not amused. Unfairly the horse was also abused. Fortunately the crop was in ricks before a detachment of the army moved into the fields with artillery, where they dug holes to level guns. They stayed about two days. Twice they fired their guns, once about three in the night; once during the day, when the farm dog left the area at high speed. The army officer gave the farmer a form to claim for the cost of repairing any damage they had done. I suspect that being a canny Scot he made a good profit out of this as his fencing was much improved. Other work I helped with included dipping sheep and separating calves from their mothers. Altogether I got paid a few pounds a week, less the cost of my lodgings, before I returned to school. And to all who attended. Canon Michael Neylon reflects on a year of wonderful personal memories Help!!! This is my initial thought as I try to prepare my first letter for Gnosall Parish News. In the first weeks of the new year it is hard to imagine what will be topical in February as I am still in reflective mode of the year just past, and what a year it was. For me there are three wonderful personal memories. Firstly, I celebrated the fortieth anniversary of my Ordination to the Priesthood. What a great evening we had in May when Bishop David McGough along with many priest friends, family members, friends and parishioners helped me celebrate the Jubilee Mass at St. Austin’s Church followed by a wonderful reception in the Parish Hall. Later in the year along with a total of 63 Diamond, Golden and Ruby Jubilarians I was the guest of the Bishops of England and Wales at Palazola outside Rome for a mini retreat and a time to relax and share experiences with other Jubilarians. Secondly, I became a Senior Citizen, and again what a wonderful evening we had in September for the celebration of the Birthday Mass followed by another party in the Parish Hall, again with wonderful food and drink and the presentation of a very generous cheque. For all the support, love and kindness of so many people I am very grateful. Thirdly, I was delighted to be at Croke Park in Dublin to see my native county Clare draw with our great rivals Cork in the All Ireland Hurling Final. Concelebrating the Silver Jubilee Mass of a former assistant prevented me getting to the replay but it was good to watch it live on television and see Clare win a thrilling game. However, enough about me for now!!! The other abiding memory I have of 2013 is the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. What a wonderful impression he made on us when he visited us in 2010. We saw an aspect of him that was so different to what was often presented in some quarters. We saw a humble holy man, a man of powerful intellect with a big pastoral heart. Then, last year his heroic decision to stand down due to failing health. He certainly took the world by surprise. Now we have Pope Francis, Papa Francesco, succeeding him in Rome and we have the appointment Of Justin Welby as Archbishop of Canterbury. What great challenges lie ahead of them and what hopes many people have for them. Let us keep them constantly in our prayers. As the editor’s deadline draws near I see we are fast approaching the Annual Octave of Prayer for the Unity of Christians. The pace may be slow in some places but thank God there are many wonderful thing happening as the Holy Spirit continues to guide and inspire us. May this year’s octave of Prayer bring us many blessings. At last something about February!!! I am looking forward in February to visiting Auschwiz – Birkenau with some Sixth Formers from Blessed William Howard Catholic High School along with some of their teacher and parents. I have never been there but I am told by people who have been that it is something everyone should experience. Please keep us in your prayers. God bless, Fr. Michael. 9 GNOSALL METHODIST CHURCH Sunday Services 2 February 10.30am:Rev Jeff Reynolds 9 February 10.30am: D. Hemingway 6. 30pm Rev. The “Summer” seems to come along slowly As we grow into adult life, Sharing and learning each step of the way Avoiding too much of its strife. But unlike it is with our Summer “Autumn” comes quckly along. What have we done with all of our time? Where do we really belong? Are we prepared for the “Winter”, What part has God played in our lives? Have we allowed Him to lead through the seasons Or have we just simply survived! 10 GNOSALL PARISH COUNCIL (INCLUDING THE WARDS OF MORETON AND KNIGHTLEY) Neighbourhood Plan By the time you read this you should already have received the Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire and hopefully already have replied. If not, it is not too late, a copy can still be downloaded from the Parish Council website, but please do so quickly as we will be collating and analysing the responses through February. Your responses will then help highlight the various issues you think might need addressing in Neighbourhood Plan policies, for further comments in due course. It is quite challenging trying to move forward with a Neighbourhood Plan at a time when controversial housing planning applications are being submitted in the background and when the Stafford Borough Local Plan (which sets the development targets for the village and which the Neighbourhood Plan has to comply with) is not yet complete, but hopefully our efforts and yours will be worthwhile in the long run. The Neighbourhood Plan Working Party may need new members. It would be great to have representatives from local business and community groups – so if anyone from such groups wishes to get involved please get in touch with the Jayne Cooper at the Parish Council on 01785 822685 or email [email protected] Staffordshire Police At the end of 2013, Gnosall Police post moved into the Grosvenor Centre. The Parish Council work closely with local PCSO’s and officers on matters affecting the Parish and regular updates are given at Council meetings. The Police post will be manned at various times during the week and parishioners are welcome to drop in. There is also an intercom service (on the outside wall) that will get you connected to police headquarters. Remember you can always call 101 to report any incidents and obviously 999 in the case of an emergency. Dave and Jenny Clarke led a new 4.5 mile walk from Broadhill along the railway line to the Outwoods, returning across the fields to Wilbrighton Hall and back to Broadhill. The New Year walk is always popular because of the coffee and cakes stop at the half way point! We don’t provide coffee and cakes on all our walks but we can guarantee really interesting walks in and around Gnosall along with good company and the opportunity to walk yourself to good health! Our Healthy Walks Programme is published in the GPN each month and there are posters advertising the walks in the Post Office, notice boards and in the Medical Centre. Our walks take place on the 1st Sunday and the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 10.30am. (see page 18 of this edition) Our contacts are 822369 and 822592 A Frosty Morning on Broadhill Picture by Steve Torrington 12 Moreton and Bromstead Gardening Club On Tuesday 25 February Tim Coleshaw from Natural England, will talk on: “ Aqualate, then, now and the future " Refreshments will be provided followed by a quiz and a raffle. Lying close to the A518 between Gnosall and Newport, the mere and surrounding woods and reedbeds support a fantastic variety of wildlife. The lake can be viewed from a hide which attracts birdwatchers from all over the Midlands. Ooops – the number was wrong in last month’s edition (our fault – sorry!) so please note that it’s 13/19587/OUT. Unfortunately, the official closing date for your comments was 24th January. But we have been told that late-ish applications will probably be considered in the case of a large and contentious application such as this. Objections should be sent to Mr John Holmes, Planning Department, Stafford Borough Council, Civic Centre, Riverside, Stafford, ST16 3AQ. You could also email direct to [email protected]. A word of caution – when you make objections online at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/planning it is highly advisable to write out your letter first, save it in a wordprocessing program, then paste it into the system. Then, if it all goes down, you have not lost your work but can easily start afresh. We need as many objections as possible – and by rights, there should be 844 since that’s how many people signed the petition in December, asking the County Council to withdraw the application – which equals about 40% of the adult population! We’re told that anything which attracts more than 100 objections is considered very carefully – and that’s what we want. It will be months before the Stafford Borough Local Plan is adopted (perhaps July if all goes well) and until it is we are VULNERABLE. Daft as it may seem, the fact that two applications have been refused and have now gone to Appeal makes this one all the more tricky. It could be said that Gnosall should have more housing because so far, we have had “only” Lowfield Lane (75). Imagine if this site were passed and then the two Appeals were lost and so approved – that would be 75+150+55+24 = 304 PLUS the affordable homes. Yes – that is the prospect which faces us – so we MUST get people to respond. And remember – the County has also offered two adjoining farms (Moat and Springfield) for housing, in the fullness of time. No more farming in Gnosall? The Parish Council met on Monday 13th January and were unanimous in rejecting this application, for all the reasons that have been put forward at the various meetings that have already taken place. They will put in their own official comments. We urge you to do the same. About 70 residents saying they want to save the Gnosall Pool (which GRID whole heartedly supports, by the way) is sufficient to galvanise councillors into action yet a vastly greater number saying they do NOT want this build is quietly ignored and we are told “it’s going to happen”. Perhaps it is time our County Councillors remembered that they represent us and lots of us do not want this! There are some interesting features in the planning application. For example: • Loss of visual amenity. If this is built, we shall lose the sweeping vista across the Doley Heath to Cowley which frames the gateway to Gnosall as we enter the village from Stafford along the A518. But this is said to constitute no loss of visual amenity, since it is apparently only ‘glimpsed’ through the trees or seen ‘fleetingly’ on approach. They go so far as to suggest that the view could be much better enjoyed from within the site itself, than (as now) from the roadside. Amazing or what?! • Access to local services They propose to build a ‘footpath link’ down to the Library. That will be fun, since under current plans, the Library will go under the school rebuild, to be replaced by a mobile library van. •Education The village school will be able to ‘cope with the moderate increase in child numbers’ the new development will bring...really? We know our highly successful village school is FULL now! The new school, under current proposals, will be no larger and County are offering no solution to this but happily suggest that the children can pop along to other village schools in surrounding areas that do have places. This is a plain dereliction of duty by County. Under this plan, new residents would have a place at the school since they will be close to it but long-standing residents at the other end of the village would not! Suffice to say that if this application is even ‘recommended for approval’ by the Borough Planning Authority at its initial stages, some very serious questions will be asked about what exactly Borough and County together are doing here! Neighbourhood Plan Questionnaire You should all have also received a copy of the Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire from the Parish Council which asks for YOUR views about YOUR village. We urge you to complete and return this, as it will provide evidence of just what people do wish to see in Gnosall. Until the Neighbourhood Plan is complete, we are vulnerable, so please help our Parish Council to get this job done by giving them your views. Please join us at GRID by contacting Gail Gregory at [email protected]. 14 The Royal British Legion Gnosall and District Branch Your Branch of the RBL meets the First Tuesday of every month at Gnosall Memorial At 20.00hrs. ( 8pm.) Membership is open to any serving, ex serving personnel or anyone over the age of 17yrs. The Chairman and Members of Gnosall and District RBL would like to thank all those who gave their time and energy in selling poppies during October 2013. The amount raised SO FAR! Is £4, 166,67. This is not the final figure and donations already received have yet to be added our estimated end of year total in Sept is approx. £4, 8oo. Plus. I must point out for those who are not quite sure where the money goes , it is centralised in Aylesford . None of the moneys collected for the poppy appeal is kept by or handled by the branch accounts , it is a separate account run by Aylesford the poppy village in charge of the overall national total collection. We also had the honour of being joined by Mrs Jane Adcock to plant a tree on the village green in memory of a staunch member of the local community and keen Lion Tony Adcock. We also handed over to the village and to the First Responders the long awaited defibrillator. The monies were raised in the main by Lion President John Beswick during his year of office when , together with his friend James Simpson ran evenings entertainment. , cycled and canoed to Nantwich and back . The wait was due to the FA putting in an order for all professional football teams in the UK . The defibrillator is located on the wall outside the petrol station and was handed over just before Christmas so that the First Responders could commence training immediately. After the break we have planned our Spring programme for fund raising in the village. We start with the a Pie and Pea Evening in the Grosvenor Centre featuring local village duo, The Pie Men on Sat Feb 1st . Tickets cost £7-00 including a Pie & pea Supper (please book in advance by either phoning Rick Talbot 01785 823177 or purchasing tickets from the Post Office) The programme starts at 7-30 with an interval for food , the raffle and you are free to bring along your own drinks . Those who had the pleasure of seeing the Pie Men at the GFest will know how good they are and we can promise you an excellent 17 We have also recommenced after the Christmas break the monthly Table Top sale in the Memorial Hall, which will take place on the first Sunday of each month starting at 9-00am. Finally planned for the future is an Old Fashioned Tea Dance to be held in the Memorial Hall on Tues 27th March and for the children the World Bunny Hopping Championship’s at Easter, more details on both to follow next month We are also keen on recruiting new members so if you are interested in joining a vibrant group raising money for local needy causes and village amenities whilst having a varied social life then why not call Pam Talbot on 01785 823177 for details. Many consider ringing to be their contribution to church life, others do it for the pure pleasure and the company it brings. Ringers come from all walks of life and range in age from ten to those in their eighties. Could you become a ringer? Coordination required is about the same as required to ride a bike Physical strength needed is similar to that required to push a child on a swing Musical ability not required, you only need to be able to count to 8 and back in a regular rhythm If you are a team player and can do the above then bellringing could be the hobby for you. Ringing is well within the capabilities of most people. Although everyone learns at different speeds the initial bell control takes on average several weeks to master, after which you can begin to ring with the rest of the band. Music is created by altering the order in which the bells sound. This is done in defined sequences of changes called methods. Learning a few simple methods allows ringers to join in with other bands in towers around the world. The origins of change ringing lie in the sixteenth century when church bells began to be fitted with a full wheel. This gave ringers control of their bell, allowing sets of bells (rings) to be rung in continuously changing patterns. Why learn to ring? • Friends around the world • Lifelong learning experience • Maintain a traditional skill • A service to the church • Team activity • A great mental workout • Opportunity to visit amazing places If you would like to find out more about church bellringing then come along to our taster session being held at St Lawrence’s Church Gnosall on Saturday 8th February 2014 from 10:00-13:00. No booking required, just turn up.
