Rosner-Najer brings to the JCC more than 20 years administrative experience in the nonprofit and Jewish world. Rosner-Najer served first as an administrator and then as the director of residential operations for Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit since 1992. Jewish Senior Life is a multi-facility Jewish senior housing organization on two Jewish Community Center campuses. Her vast responsibilities included managing and supervising eight residential properties with more than 900 residents, 36 assisted living apartments and 106 residences licensed as homes for the aged. With 10 managers reporting directly to her, she also had indirect supervisory responsibility for more than 200 professional caregivers. The facilities not only provide housing but also many related services including independent/congregate and assisted living environments. As director, Rosner-Najer was responsible for financial and business operations, personnel, maintenance, kosher food service, and family and resident relations. Prior to working with Jewish Senior Life, Rosner-Najer was a counselor/consultant for Personal Performance Consultants, a national employee assistance and counseling firm. She also served as the director of Social Work and Medical/Hospice Social Work for Riverside Hospital. Rosner-Najer earned a Masters of Social Work from Wayne State University where she also received her undergraduate degree. Her husband Nelson Najer is employed by Michigan Basic Property Insurance of Michigan with offices located in Detroit near Belle Isle. In his position as Infrastructure Administrator he manages their information technology department and staff. They have two children Sarah age 8 and William age 10. Rosner-Najer will be replacing Leslie Bash who retired in March after a highly successful career in Ann Arbor of nearly 10 years as executive director and taking the JCC to new heights. Chair of the executive director search committee, Nancy Margolis said, “We are thrilled to have found someone of Andrea’s caliber. Inside Hana’s Suitcase 2:00 PM Canada, 2009, 88 minutes, English Based on the internationally acclaimed book Hana’s Suitcase, which has been translated into 40 languages, this film is an effective blend of documentary and dramatic techniques. In addition to tracing the lives of George and Hana Brady, this film tells the present-day story of a group of Japanese children and how their passionate teacher helped them solve the mystery of Hana Brady, whose name was painted on an old battered suitcase that they received from Auschwitz. This film is another way to bring about a dialogue of anti-Semitism and tolerance with our youth. Opening Night Sponsor Reception Sunday, May 15, 6:30 p.m. at the Michigan Theater 8:00 PM The Yankles USA, 2010, 115 minutes Whoever heard of an ultra Orthodox baseball team? Based on a true story, an ex-con finds redemption by coaching an upstart, disorganized Orthodox Jewish baseball team. Take Charlie, a recently out of prison, washed-up baseball player whose probation requires community service. Add a gaggle of yeshiva buchers in love with baseball. Put them together in a pot and stir into a sweet dramedy. Against a backdrop of rabbinical supervision and the players’ orthodox practice, Charlie coaxes and cajoles his players into a capable team. Tzitsis and baseball bats do mix! A great family film. MONDAY, May 16 12:00 p.m. • Lunch and Learn with Marcia Fishman Director of the Michigan Office of the Screen Actors Guild Discussion of the Michigan Film Industry Cost: Members- $8.00 Non-Members- $10.00 1:30 PM Winston Churchill: Walking with Destiny USA, 2010, 101 minutes Narrated by Academy Award winner, Ben Kingsley, this documentary highlights Churchills’ years in the political wilderness, his early opposition to Adolf Hitler and Nazism and his support for Jews under threat by the Nazi regime. As historian John Lukacs explains, Churchill may not have won the War in 1940, but without him the War most certainly would have been lost. If Churchill’s warnings about Nazi Germany’s racial policies towards Jews had been heeded in the early 1930’s, the Holocaust may never have occurred. 8 Chai Lights April/May/June 2011 2011 Festival at the Mic higan Theater Jewish Film MONDAY, May 16 continued 5:00 PM Howl USA, 2010, 84 minutes (Rated R) An obscenity trial that started a revolution and a poem that shocked a generation!” Howl dives into the twisted life of famous poet Alan Ginsberg, played by Academy Award nominee, James Franco and the controversial trial that surrounds his most well-known piece of work, Howl. The issue of free speech is examined in San Francisco in 1957 when the appropriateness of Ginsberg’s poetry is questioned during a long trial. Ginsberg is expertly played by Franco and the trial lawyer is portrayed by John Hamm (Mad Men). 2010 Nominee, Berlin International Film Festival, 2010 Winner, Sundance Film Festival, Freedom of Expression Award, 2010 Nominee, Sundance Film Festival, Grand Jury Prize 8:00 PM Ajami Israel, 2009, 120 minutes This is an unforgettable drama about an area of Jaffa where Arabs, Jews and Christians live together in a fragile peace. Filmmaker Frank Stiefel’s portrait of his mother Ingelore, is a loving tribute to her courage and determination. Her amazing life shaped her into an extraordinary teacher and we learn the power of light over darkness. Followed by…. Just Like Home Israel/Russia, 2009, 58 minutes For the past ten years a loving couple have managed Moscow’s Jewish Orphanage–home to children who were abused, neglected, and abandoned by the people closest to them. It takes a lot of patience but slowly, gradually, these children learn to regain their trust in humanity and secure a chance for a brighter future. This film offers a rare glimpse at life in a home with thirty children and two “parents” who refuse to give up hope. www.jccannarbor.org 9 TUESDAY, MAY 17 continued 5:00 PM Seven Minutes in Heaven Israel, 2008, 94 minutes Mysticism and memory collide in this quietly powerful Israeli neo-noir thriller. Each year we set aside one Shabbat where children are encouraged to invite their grandparents. If grandparents are unable to attend or they do not have grandparents they can ask a special adult friend to attend. This event will be the culmination of a week-long focus on Shabbat as a study unit. Classes will have worked on making their own Shabbat ritual items such as Challah covers and candlesticks, and story times will center on Shabbat tales. The Shabbat luncheon will be held in the Gym and “Tot Shabbat” families will be included in the celebration. All children are encouraged to bring grandparents or other “special friends” as their guests. Song leader Brett Levy will lead everyone’s Shabbat song favorites, and ECC preschoolers will prepare a film of some of their favorite activities. At the ECC, we believe that early childhood is an ideal time to begin teaching core Jewish values. Children are active participants in all Jewish Holiday celebrations. Staff and children create meaningful ways to celebrate Shabbat and all of the holidays. As part of our focus on Shabbat the children will make a special gift to present to their special guests. The ECC looks forward to celebrating Shabbat with the children, their parents, grandparents and special friends as we rejoice in this year’s many accomplishments!
