The JCC Welcomes
Our New Executive Director - Andrea Rosner-Najer
Following a nation-wide
search, the Board of
Directors of the Jewish
Community Center
of Greater Ann Arbor
has appointed Andrea
Rosner-Najer its new JCC
executive director.
Rosner-Najer brings
to the JCC more than
20 years administrative
experience in the nonprofit and Jewish world. Rosner-Najer served first as
an administrator and then as the director of residential
operations for Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit
since 1992.
Jewish Senior Life is a multi-facility Jewish senior
housing organization on two Jewish Community Center
campuses. Her vast responsibilities included managing
and supervising eight residential properties with more
than 900 residents, 36 assisted living apartments and
106 residences licensed as homes for the aged. With 10
managers reporting directly to her, she also had indirect
supervisory responsibility for more than 200 professional
caregivers.
The facilities not only provide housing but also many
related services including independent/congregate and
assisted living environments. As director, Rosner-Najer was
responsible for financial and business operations,
personnel, maintenance, kosher food service, and family
and resident relations.
Prior to working with Jewish Senior Life, Rosner-Najer
was a counselor/consultant for Personal Performance
Consultants, a national employee assistance and
counseling firm. She also served as the director of Social
Work and Medical/Hospice Social Work for Riverside
Hospital.
Rosner-Najer earned a Masters of Social Work from
Wayne State University where she also received her
undergraduate degree. Her husband Nelson Najer
is employed by Michigan Basic Property Insurance of
Michigan with offices located in Detroit near Belle Isle.
In his position as Infrastructure Administrator he manages
their information technology department and staff.
They have two children Sarah age 8 and William age 10.
Rosner-Najer will be replacing Leslie Bash who retired
in March after a highly successful career in Ann Arbor of
nearly 10 years as executive director and taking the JCC
to new heights.
Chair of the executive director search committee, Nancy
Margolis said, “We are thrilled to have found someone of
Andrea’s caliber. She comes with an amazing background
of administrative accomplishments and proven
management skills. Add to that her genuine warmth and
welcoming smile. Andrea will be a valuable asset to our
JCC and our community.”

at the JCC
Each summer, the JCC’s Camp Raanana day
camp provides local children and teens with
the chance to make incredible summer memories,
form long-lasting friendships, and strengthen their Jewish
identities.
Camp Raanana is the perfect place for campers entering
grades K-8 to explore new interests, build
Jewish connections, gain self-confidence,
connect to nature, and experience all
the fun of Jewish summer camp!
Camp Raanana also offers a Counselor in
Training program for teens entering
9th – 10th grade. The CIT program provides training, hands-on
experience, and social activities for teens who are making the
transition from camper to counselor.
The JCC relies on the generous support of the community to help offset
costs for Camp Raanana and provide scholarship assistance to qualifying
families. Your support is needed now more than ever to ensure that the
powerful experiences of Jewish camping are available to all!
YES! I would like to support the JCC’s summer programs for Jewish youth.
Your contribution will help provide incredible Jewish summer experiences for children and teens.
For example:
$18 provides a camper with healthy snacks for one week
$50 provides two fun overnight adventures for a camper
$100 provides challah for the whole camp for one Shabbat
$200 provides a week-long specialty session for a camper
$400 provides a four-week training program for a CIT
$1800 provides a full summer of fun for a camper

BOOK OF THE MONTH - Walking Israel: A Personal Search
for the Soul of a Nation by Martin Fletcher
The 2010 National Jewish book awards have recently
been announced and Fletcher’s book has won the
Contemporary Jewish Life and Practice prize. He has been
a war correspondent for NBC News and is now a special
correspondent based in Israel. In 2008 he decided to walk
the 110 miles along Israel’s western coastline in search
of positive stories about the people he would encounter.
Though he discovers inevitable strife, he is ultimately
optimistic.

Inside Hana’s Suitcase
2:00 PM
Canada, 2009, 88 minutes, English
Based on the internationally acclaimed book Hana’s Suitcase, which has been translated into
40 languages, this film is an effective blend of documentary and dramatic techniques. In addition
to tracing the lives of George and Hana Brady, this film tells the present-day story of a group
of Japanese children and how their passionate teacher helped them solve the mystery of Hana
Brady, whose name was painted on an old battered suitcase that they received from Auschwitz.
This film is another way to bring about a dialogue of anti-Semitism and tolerance with
our youth.

The Yankles
USA, 2010, 115 minutes
Whoever heard of an ultra Orthodox baseball team? Based on a true story, an ex-con finds
redemption by coaching an upstart, disorganized Orthodox Jewish baseball team. Take Charlie,
a recently out of prison, washed-up baseball player whose probation requires community service.
Add a gaggle of yeshiva buchers in love with baseball. Put them together in a pot and stir into a
sweet dramedy. Against a backdrop of rabbinical supervision and the players’ orthodox practice,
Charlie coaxes and cajoles his players into a capable team. Tzitsis and baseball bats do mix!
A great family film.

Winston Churchill: Walking with Destiny
USA, 2010, 101 minutes
Narrated by Academy Award winner, Ben Kingsley, this documentary highlights Churchills’ years
in the political wilderness, his early opposition to Adolf Hitler and Nazism and his support for
Jews under threat by the Nazi regime. As historian John Lukacs explains, Churchill may not have
won the War in 1940, but without him the War most certainly would have been lost. If Churchill’s
warnings about Nazi Germany’s racial policies towards Jews had been heeded in the early 1930’s,
the Holocaust may never have occurred.

An obscenity trial that started a revolution and a poem that shocked a generation!” Howl dives into
the twisted life of famous poet Alan Ginsberg, played by Academy Award nominee, James Franco
and the controversial trial that surrounds his most well-known piece of work, Howl. The issue of
free speech is examined in San Francisco in 1957 when the appropriateness of Ginsberg’s poetry
is questioned during a long trial. Ginsberg is expertly played by Franco and the trial lawyer is
portrayed by John Hamm (Mad Men).

USA, 2009, 40 minutes
Born a deaf Jew in 1924 in Germany, Ingelore Herz Honigstein narrates the events leading up to
her escape from the Nazis, in speech and sign, revisiting past experiences with a startling degree
of emotional clarity. Filmmaker Frank Stiefel’s portrait of his mother Ingelore, is a loving tribute to
her courage and determination. Her amazing life shaped her into an extraordinary teacher and
we learn the power of light over darkness.

Nora’s Will
Mexico, 2008, 92 minutes
This story takes a humorous tone towards families who struggle to cope with the death of a loved
one. Jose finds out that Nora, the woman he’d been married to for 30 years and then divorced,
has committed suicide. The rabbi explains to Jose that due to the celebration of the Passover festivities, together with a few other factors, if Nora is not buried that same day, they will have to wait
almost five days to be able to carry out the burial. It turns out that before she died, Nora devised
a Machiavellian plan in order to take care of her funeral. But she missed something. A mysterious photograph left under the bed will lead to an unexpected outcome which will remind us that
sometimes the greatest love stories are hidden in the smallest places.

Camp Keshet is a specially designed camp experience for
preschool-aged children. Our camp program has been extremely
successful engaging children in outdoor Active Learning
experiences. Spacious grounds and facilities of the JCC Early
Childhood Center, enhance the campers experience as they
spend each morning in our specially designed summer outdoor
environment.
A consistent daily routine provides a confidence-building
comfort for the young campers, and includes small group times
for exploration of art and nature, large group times for music
and movement, and times for children to plan, carry out, and
talk about their own initiatives which are supported by highly
qualified teachers. This year we will again offer the opportunity
!
for children to participate in caring for and harvesting the ECC
gardens.
Within the routine, each day has its own special identity.
Mondays are for bidding farewell to Shabbat with Havdallah,
Tuesdays and Thursdays we travel a short distance to Buhr Park,
where we have exclusive use of the tot pool. One Wednesday
each session will feature a special program or field trip and
Fridays we celebrate the coming of Shabbat.
Camp Keshet features a staff to camper ratio of 1:7 and 1:4 at
the pool! To enhance each camper’s experience, children not
enrolled at the ECC attend for two-week sessions consisting of 5
morning/week.
Camp Keshet’s Sessions are as follows:
Session I: June 20 – July 1
Session II: July 5 – July 15

Grandparent/Special Friend Shabbat
Friday June 3, 2011 • 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
The Early Childhood Center will celebrate the ninth annual
Grandparent/Special Friend Shabbat. Each year we set
aside one Shabbat where children are encouraged to invite
their grandparents. If grandparents are unable to attend
or they do not have grandparents they can ask a special
adult friend to attend. This event will be the culmination
of a week-long focus on Shabbat as a study unit. Classes
will have worked on making their own Shabbat ritual items
such as Challah covers and candlesticks, and story times
will center on Shabbat tales.
The Shabbat luncheon will be held in the Gym and “Tot
Shabbat” families will be included in the celebration. All
children are encouraged to bring grandparents or other
“special friends” as their guests. Song leader Brett Levy
will lead everyone’s Shabbat song favorites, and ECC
preschoolers will prepare a film of some of their favorite
activities.
At the ECC, we believe that early childhood is an ideal
time to begin teaching core Jewish values. Children are
active participants in all Jewish Holiday celebrations. Staff
and children create meaningful ways to celebrate Shabbat
and all of the holidays. As part of our focus on Shabbat
the children will make a special gift to present to their
special guests.
The ECC looks forward to celebrating Shabbat with the
children, their parents, grandparents and special friends as
we rejoice in this year’s many accomplishments!
For more information on how to be included contact
Noreen De Young at 734-971-0990 or

Intergenerational Passover Program
Thursday, April 14th • 11:00 a.m. at the JCC
As
American
Jews,
we find
comfort,
community,
and
continuity
in the
knowledge
that as we
are celebrating a holiday like Passover, Jews
all over the world are celebrating as well.
Here in Ann Arbor we are inviting our oldest
and youngest members to come together
and share the ritual items that can be found
on Passover tables everywhere. Children,
grandparents, parents and seniors will be
paired to share their ritual items and stories
that go with them.
On Thursday April 14th, the Jewish Community
Center Older Adults program and the Early
Childhood Center will celebrate Passover
together. Children will also participate in an
interactive telling of the Passover story. Songs
and dances from the holiday will enliven our
celebration.
A Passover style lunch will be served to
everyone who attends.
Please make your reservations by calling the JCC 734 971-0990 or
by stopping by the front desk.

6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the JCC, 2935 Birch Hollow Dr,

One of the most difficult subjects to think about, let
alone discuss with your aging loved one, is end-of-life
care. When should hospice be considered? What if
family members disagree about the timing of calling
in hospice? How can you discuss hospice with your
aging parent? And what, exactly, is hospice? Marie
Pierce from Arbor Hospice will provide guidance in
answering those questions and more. Join us to learn
about the benefits of in-home hospice care.
