St. Monica, whose feast we
celebrate in August, is often known
as “the persistent mother.” She
watched her oldest son, Augustine,
turn his back on his Christian faith.
Monica was exasperated. For
years she gave up talking directly to her son on the
advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to
talk to God about Augustine then to Augustine about
God.
The mother never gave up praying for her son.
Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was
baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo.
St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church’s
greatest scholars.
Today’s readings address the importance of
persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he
is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of
Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his
disciples to “ask and you will receive; seek and you will
find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke
11:9). This is our charge: keep praying.

From the Pastor’s Desk
Last Tuesday I had the honor of seeing off our 40 youth delegates, along
with their 19 adult chaperones, who were on their way to Krakow, Poland for
World Youth Day. Seeing their eager faces, I have this immense feeling of
joy in my heart for them, knowing that they are at the threshold of possibly
one of the best experiences they can have in their lives. Ever!
I was there when five million people converged in Manila for the finale mass of St.
John Paul II in Manila for the World Youth Day in 1995. I was a newly ordained priest then
and the images of those amazing days remain so vivid in my memory. Notwithstanding the
record breaking crowd, the spirit of unity that pervaded that blessed gathering was
electrifying. To sing “Tell the World of His Love” with millions of Catholics in the presence of
a dearly loved Pope can be unforgettable.
A few years later I had another chance to join another World Youth Day, this time
during the great Jubilee of 2000 in Rome. If you have no idea what “Catholic” really means,
immerse yourself in the midst of the Eternal City and soak in the universality of those who
share our faith. African priests who speak beautiful French, youth leaders from the
Shakespearean city of Verona (the setting Romeo and Juliet), students of a Salesian school
from Belorussia, Cantonese youth from Hong Kong: these are just glimpses of the diversity
and immensity of the Body of Christ. It may be about sixteen years ago but the theme
song, “L’Emmanuel” is still on my playlist.
I asked the delegates to be safe and to enjoy. It is with a twinge of envy that I saw
them off. I have to remain here and man the fort. However, I am confident that this
experience will be enough to fire up their hearts and we, as a parish, will be richer because
of it.
Let us join our prayers for
our parishioners who are part of
World Youth Day (these include
our Young Adults who joined their
peers from the LA Cathedral). Let
us pray that they may be safe,
inspired and reinvigorated in their
faith.

Abortion and Contraception
"It is noteworthy that as acceptance and use of contraception have increased in our society, so
have acceptance and use of abortion. Couples who unintentionally conceive a child while using
contraception are far more likely to resort to abortion than others. Tragically, our society has fallen
into a mentality that views children as a burden and invites many to consider abortion as a
"backup" to contraceptive failure. This is most obvious in efforts to promote as "emergency
contraception" drugs that really act as early abortifacients.
"With Pope John Paul II we affirm that contraception and abortion are "specifically different evils,"
because only "the latter destroys the life of a human being," but that they are also related (The
Gospel of Life, no. 13). It is important to remember that means that are referred to as
"contraceptive" are, in reality, sometimes also abortifacient. An end to abortion will not come from
contraceptive campaigns but from a deeper understanding of our human sexuality, and of human
life, as sacred gifts deserving our careful stewardship” (2001: US Bishops’ Pastoral Plan for Pro-life
Activities: A Campaign in Support of Life).

“Junto a Juan Pablo II nosotros afirmamos que la anticoncepción y el aborto son “dos males
específicamente diferentes,” el último destruye la vida de un ser humano,” pero están
relacionados” (Evangelio de la Vida No. 13). Es importante recordar que medios a los que se les
llama “anticonceptivos” son, en realidad, también algunas veces abortivos. El fin del aborto no
vendrá de parte de campañas anticonceptivas sino del profundo entendimiento de nuestra
sexualidad humana, y de la vida humana, como regalos sagrados que merecen nuestra cuidadosa
