Solemnity of The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ
This celebration originated in the diocese of Liège
(1246) on the basis of revelations of Juliana of
Cornillion. It was accepted with such enthusiasm
throughout Europe that in 1264 it was promulgated
for the entire Latin Church. From the beginning the
feast commemorated both the body and the blood of
the Lord. This original unity has been restored in
the post-Vatican II celebration.
Human beings are so essentially physical that
even our language of the spirit derives from our
bodies, To be a member of an organization requires
that we be incorporated into that organization.
Publications of societies are said to be organs of
one group.
Jesus and his Church have a keep grasp of this
reality in the celebrations we call sacraments. Sacraments address themselves to the Church which is
Christ’s Body and to individual members of that
Body. The source and summit of all the Church’s
life is professed to be the celebration of the Eucharist where Body of Christ partakes of what it is.
On this Sunday we celebrate our identity of
Christ’s Body. On this Sunday we profess our belief
that the life-giving and life-supporting blood which
flows among us is Christ’s very life. On this Sunday
we direct our attention to the symbol which makes
all other symbols possible.
The earthly language of bodies and blood fills the
scriptures. But those same scriptures proclaim that
the pouring forth of blood in unto the nourishment
of God’s people. Flesh, blood, bread and wine are
the products of destructive processes which bring
them to human tables as food to sustain a family.
Christ immersed himself in those processes which
brought him to the table of the human family as the
one food and drink which changes the eater into the
eaten. In him we truly become what we eat and
drink.
BROKEN AND POURED OUT
It is a fundamental truth of our faith that God is
the provider of everything. God has promised to
feed us, body, mind, and spirit, from our first breath
to our last. At every Mass, every day, throughout the
world, at the breaking of bread and pouring of wine,
we remember Jesus’ last Passover meal with his
friends, and we believe that the Lord is truly present
to us now. With our human eyes we see only the
bread and wine, but it is the Lord himself, broken
and poured out for us, whom we receive. Today’s
solemnity is an opportunity to think long and hard
about this amazing love that God has for us. It is the
absolute opposite of greed, which says, “I’m going
to grab hold of everything I can and keep it for myself,” and also of its close relation, stinginess:
Broken and poured out….
“I’ll give only what I have to, and not one bit more. ”
Greed and stinginess both come from fear, a fear that life will
somehow fall apart and we will lose everything we have.
Many prophets, saints, and teachers, and above all, Jesus himself have shown us that fear is essentially a lack of trust in
God. Anyone who has lived through a devastating hurricane,
earthquake, or flood knows that what they “own” can be taken
away in a heartbeat. People who go through such an experience show remarkable resilience and courage, and a will to
rebuild their lives. They should remind us that we, who are
loved by God the Father, fed by God the Son, and strengthened by God the Holy Spirit, have everything we need. We
have only to open our hearts, receive these gifts, and truly believe for our lives to be transformed.

CUERPO ENTREGADO, SANGRE DERRAMADA
Una verdad fundamental de nuestra fe es que Dios es dador
de todo. Dios ha prometido alimentarnos de cuerpo, alma y
espíritu, desde nuestro primer aliento de vida hasta el último.
Todos los días, alrededor del mundo, cuando se parte el pan y
se echa el vino en cada Misa, recordamos la última cena de
Jesús con sus amigos y creemos que el Señor se hace ahora
verdaderamente presente entre nosotros. Sólo vemos pan y
vino con nuestros ojos humanos, pero a quien recibimos es al
mismo Señor, que entrega su cuerpo y derrama su sangre. La
solemnidad de hoy nos ofrece la oportunidad de pensar profunda e intensamente en este asombroso amor que Dios nos
tiene. Un amor que es el opuesto absoluto de la avaricia, pues
ésta piensa: “Voy a apoderarme de todo lo que pueda y a
quedarme con todo”. También la mezquindad está íntimamente relacionada con la avaricia, pues es la que nos hace
pensar: “Doy sólo lo mínimo posible y ni un céntimo más”.
Tanto la avaricia como la mezquindad brotan del miedo,
miedo a que la vida se nos haga pedazos y perdamos todo lo
que tenemos. Muchos profetas, santos y maestros —hombres y
mujeres—, pero sobre todo Jesús, nos han enseñado que el
miedo es esencialmente una falta de confianza en Dios.
Cualquiera que haya pasado por la experiencia de un
huracán, un terremoto o una inundación de secuelas devastadoras sabe que se les puede arrancar lo que “poseen” en un
santiamén. Las personas que han vivido tales experiencias demuestran una gran capacidad y valentía para recupe-rarse y
rehacer su vida. Esto bien pudiera recordanos que tenemos
todo lo que necesitamos en el amor de Dios Padre, en el alimento eucarístico de Dios Hijo y en la fortaleza de Dios
Espíritu Santo. Sólo tenemos que abrir el corazón, recibir estos dones y verda-deramente creer que nuestra vida será
transformada.

Who Is My Neighbor? • Wednesday, June 1, 6-7pm. Join the
NM Faith Coalition for Immigrant Justice and Immaculate
Conception Church for the beginning of a conversation on immigration and the ways we see borders in our communities. We
will watch and discuss a couple of short videos. This will be
the first of a series of events to take place in the coming months
for parishioners who wish to explore themes of migration more
