Your charitable gifts remember people who made
Your charitable gifts remember people who made a difference Gifts of remembrance add to legacy The Health Foundation has a long tradition of accepting charitable donations to celebrate the lives of friends, family, and loved ones. These gifts serve a two-fold purpose by creating a lasting tribute and contributing to health care efforts in Wilkes County. As a donor, you will receive an acknowledgement of your gift for tax purposes. If your gift is made in remembrance of someone who Dwight Edward Pardue, Sr. served on the board of directors of The Health Foundation since 2005. His legacy of selflessness and caring will stand in perpetuity. 230 Jefferson Street North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 (336) 838-1949 Find us on Facebook and Twitter @healthywilkes or visit our website at www.healthfoundationinc.org for current health news. Update THE HEALTH FOUNDATION Member Newsletter Health Summit Seeks Community Solutions Overflow seating had to be brought in to accommodate a crowd of over 120 participants at the 2013 Health Summit held in May. The event was organized by The Wilkes County Health Department and Wilkes Regional Medical Center and sponsored by The Health Foundation. The three groups collaborated on a community health assessment to determine local health care needs and then presented preliminary data at the summit. Attendees representing the school system, health care providers, and social service agencies were then asked to provide insights into how Wilkes County can address the most pressing health care concerns. “Health departments have long been required to conduct similar assessments. Non-profit hospitals are now required to do likewise, and so it makes sense that we would all work together to gather this information,” said Executive Director Heather Murphy. “Past assessments have informed our work by helping us focus on what’s important to the people of this community.” Facilitators conducted six breakout sessions addressing access to health care, mental health, physical activity and nutrition, unintentional injuries and violence, chronic disease, and substance abuse. Data for the assessment was collected from health care providers, a representative sample of people throughout the community, hospitalization records, and other secondary data sources such as death records. A study being conducted by Dr. Joseph Telfair, the Professor of Public Health Research and Practice at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will analyze the data to shed light on the areas of highest importance. The Health Foundation conducted a retreat in February that focused in part on how community partners working together can have a collective impact on complex issues. The concept is that businesses, educators, community members, health care providers, and philanthropists can work together to help make the world a better place by focusing and acting on what’s most important. The Foundation is working on a strategic plan and will announce its plans this fall during its annual meeting. Cover artwork compliments of University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. The deadline for applications, which can be found at our website at www.healthfoundationinc.org, is June 28th. North Carolina residents are eligible for the awards. Students are judged on the basis of their academic achievement, community service, dedication to their chosen profession, and the critical need for professionals in their area of study. The yearly awards, which typically range from $500 to $1,500, are renewable when students meet the requirements of their program. The Board of Directors recently voted to make changes to the program, which no longer requires students to repay the scholarship as if it were a loan if they ultimately do not end up working in Western North Carolina. This was initiated to encourage more qualified students to apply without fear that the economy could work against them. The scholarships are made possible by contributions of our membership. Endowed scholarships have been established for Shirley and Alvin Sturdivant, Jr., Ben Abernethy, Ray Inscore, and the R. L. Melton Family. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Thank you for contributing to a healthier community!
