PRESIDENT & DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
T
The Health Foundation has also followed the
philanthropic tradition of identifying and nurturing the
talents of future generations by offering scholarships
to students entering health care professions. It is a way
to ensure our community has a skilled work force to
meet the growing demand for health care services
while offering young professionals a way to stay in our
community.
But we also recognize our need to reach beyond the bounds of our checkbook to make a difference here. We will continue to help leverage funding
from larger institutions to maximize the impact of our
charitable gifts. We will help bring together concerned
parties to work on complex health care issues that require a multi-pronged approach to their solution. And
we will bring a compassionate, open, listening heart to
these challenges.
We believe that The Health Foundation is a
small but strong presence in the community and that,
thanks to your support, our potential to make a difference here has only just begun. We encourage you to
get involved, share your ideas, and continue to help us
explore new ways to improve our community’s health.
his annual report tells the story of our organization’s first twenty years. Founded in 1991, our
small group could not have imagined the scope of
work we would be faced with when we boldly decided
to improve the health and well-being of the people
who live, work, and raise families in Wilkes County,
North Carolina.
But by bringing together a group of dedicated
leaders passionate about making a difference in the
quality, availability, and affordability of health care
here, we proved that big things could indeed come of
small packages.
The Council of Foundations recently issued an
opinion piece on small foundations—defined as those
with assets under $10 million dollars. At $4,501,998 in
net assets, we fall into that category. Its author, Paul N.
Ylvisaker, states that the sector is uniquely poised to
have tremendous impact because of its ability to employ both tried and true methods of philanthropy such
as grant-making as well as more creative, inventive
forms of problem-solving.
Our leadership has intentionally set out to do
both. We have a robust grant-making program that has
helped bring numerous programs and services in this
community. Your gifts have been invested in what we
consider to be among the most important health care
initiatives in the community, and we are excited to
share with you the results of that work.

2011 MATCHING GRANT PROGRAM
T
he Health Foundation Challenge Grant
recipients for 2011 were:
Ruby Pardue Blackburn Adult Day Health Care
Center $15,000.00 challenge grant
The center provides a safe place for adults of fragile
health to spend the day under medical supervision.
Clients include patients with developmental disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, and the effects of stroke,
along with other mental or physical impairments. It is
designed to be an affordable alternative to nursing
home placement or assisted living.
Wilkes Adult Developmental Activity Program
$15,000.00 challenge grant
By teaching job skills to adults with disabilities, ADAP
fosters the self-esteem and quality of life for its clients. Additionally, the program teaches self care skills,
including exercise. Parents of its clientele also enjoy a
respite from caregiving which aids in stress reduction
and provides a sense of well-being.
Carenet Counseling of Wilkes
Formerly Pastoral Care and Counseling of Wilkes, this
program provides outpatient counseling services to
individuals, couples, and families dealing with emotional, social, spiritual, and mental health issues. It is
designed to integrate mental, physical, spiritual and
community health and serves people regardless of income.
The downturn in the nation’s economy put tremendous strains on local non-profit health care agencies, who experienced budget cuts while demands for
services grew. We responded by continuing to offer
challenge grants tied to organizational efforts to increase support from individuals.

Appalachian Senior Program
$2,500.00 fundraising sponsorship
This program pairs older volunteers (age 60+) with
children who have special emotional, social, or educational needs. Both parties benefit from their involvement in the program.
The Mobile Expanded School Health Bus
$500 fundraising sponsorship with additional matching grant
Teenagers’ health care needs are often overlooked, and
so the MESH bus brings health care professionals to
high school students. Students receive everything from
immunizations and sports physicals to health assessments, physical exams, and mental health services.
Wilkes Sheltered Aid for Families in Emergencies
SAFE provides a comprehensive program of services
to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. They operate a shelter for families who are
not safe in their own homes, as well as operate a crisis
telephone line.
The Child Abuse Prevention Team
This program helps parents learn safe, healthy ways to
discipline children while also providing a neutral environment for court-ordered supervised visitation.
ADDITIONAL GRANTS
The Wilkes Public Health Dental Clinic
$5,000.00
Wilkes County boasts the highest percentage of people
seeing a dentist in the state, a feat that translates into
healthy, happy smiles for thousands of people. Low
income and uninsured patients see their dentist on a
sliding fee scale. The Health Foundation awarded the
group additional funding to further expand its reach
by hosting two free dental clinics.

one of an assortment of items provided.
Lunch and Learn
$240.00
The Wilkes County Health Department and The
Wilkes County Library collaborated to offer a series of
health education topics. Local doctors and other
health care professionals donated their time and expertise to educate participants.
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training
$2,049.00
This grant provided training to nurses who respond to
victims of rape and sexual assault. Nurses are taught
medical forensic evidence collection and how to best
treat the victim.
Wilkes Regional Medical Center Education
Department Equipment
$1,477.00
Physicians and clinicians rely on the library within the
hospital in order to research and stay current on health
care issues.

When Wilkes General Hospital first opened its
doors, the emergency department consisted of two
exam rooms. One of the rooms doubled as the

This led the hospital to embark on a major expansion of the emergency department, adding 9,500
square feet to the front entrance of the department.
The original space will also be up-fitted to meet modern standards of care. The number of exam rooms
when complete will raise to twenty-eight.
Patients used a telephone at the check-in desk to
summon a nurse, who would then call a doctor in if
need be.
Things have changed pretty dramatically since then.
Today Wilkes Regional Medical Center handles
more than 32,000 patient visits per year, making it the
busiest emergency department in the region. Boardcertified emergency department physicians see patients
round-the-clock. And no one is ever turned away regardless of their ability to pay—making it the health
care safety net for the elderly, the poor, and the uninsured.
The Health Foundation was asked to help provide
funding. By year-end of 2011, the hospital administration, staff, and board of directors were invited to participate in the campaign. Over $215,000.00 was awarded to the hospital in the first year of a planned fiveyear effort.
Donors who make gifts of over $1,000 will be recognized on a plaque inside the new emergency department. Naming opportunities for larger gifts are also

To date, The Health Foundation has awarded
$113,800.00 in scholarships to 74 students.
The awards are competitive, and students have an opportunity to renew each year if they maintain strong grades.
Upon graduation they are asked to seek employment in
Wilkes County, thus helping ensure that our community
has an educated, dedicated work force to care for our aging
population. Those who are unable to do so are asked to
repay their awards.
Scholarships are funded both through the endowed
earnings of named scholarships as well as gifts from within
the community.
We are pleased to present the 2011 scholarship recipients:
Theresa Jarvis received the Betty Winslow Scholarship. The fund was established to honor Betty Winslow,
who has a strong commitment to both the health care field
and a belief in life-long learning. She retired after a distinguished career as director of the Wilkes Regional Medical
Center Radiology Technology program.

Kimberly Taylor was awarded the Shirley and Alvin

Each year area businesses and hospital employees join together to brighten the hospital for the holidays. Donated
