Flowing
Reflecting
Growing
From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
The 2010 fiscal year was one of celebrated accomplishments,
new beginnings and planning for the future. Like the stream
that runs through our property, the essence of our mission - our
educational programs for children - continues to flow and evolve.
“A river seems a magic thing.
A magic, living part of the earth itself.”
- Laura Gilpin
Riverbend is aptly named for the bend in The Schuylkill River that defines
the contour of our property. And like the river, it possesses a bit of magic.
A rustic place that is green and hilly where tens of thousands of children
have learned and played, explored and discovered a bit about the wonderful world of nature and a bit about themselves as well.
Mission
Riverbend Environmental Education Center teaches environmental
principles to children in Southeastern Pennsylvania through a direct
connection with nature, inspiring respect for our natural world and
action as aware, responsible and caring citizens.
1
The highlights that we share in this report are a snapshot in time that connect the days
before and following the given year, yet they are all part of our 2008-2011 Strategic
Plan. This plan has been an invaluable working document and barometer of our
progress and our impact.
We are optimistic about our purpose and our ability to connect children to the
natural world and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. As demonstrated in the program statistics on page 10, our school programs continue to grow from 2009 to 2010, we witnessed a 16% increase in per-student visits, 61% of which
are from underserved communities.
The changing and challenging economy prompts a healthy dose of reflection, instills
patience, cultivates persistence and invigorates an already entrepreneurial approach.
This attitude, balanced with best practices, enables us to continue to gladly serve our
purpose and solve problems that naturally arise while implementing our future plans.
We are proud of the work we have accomplished, its impact on the children we serve,
and the environment.Yet our work is not possible without your generous support.
Thank you for your investment in a healthy environment for our kids.
Sincerely,
Laurie Bachman
Executive Director

2010 at a Glance...
1. Philadelphia Children Access Nature
After a year of program planning, curriculum development, and fundraising,
Riverbend initiated the three-year phased implementation of a environmental
enrichment program for K-grade 5 school children. This replicable program
model provides hands-on, outdoor expansions to the School District of Philadelphia’s Science CORE Modules that relate to Earth and Biological Sciences.
Through professional development and teacher support, in-class activities for
students, field trips and community involvement, the program strives to increase
the effectiveness of science education for participating students.
Implementation of the program began in November 2010 with our school partner, the Anna Blakiston Day School. The first year we worked with second grade
students and teachers on an Air and Weather Unit and Insect Unit. It included
three half-day professional development workshops with the teachers, 12 in-class
lessons for each of the three classrooms, and two field trips for all of the students.
Over the course of the next two years, we will implement the program across all
K-5 grade levels at the AB Day School.
This program has been made possible by the generous support ofThe Boeing Company Charitable Trust,
The Hamilton Family Foundation, Henkel of America, Inc., PECO, and SAP.
2. Alec Williamson Bird Observation area
A beautiful mahogany deck overlooking the Alec Williamson Bird Observation
Area and stone terrace leading into the native plant garden are the finishing
touches of Riverbend’s most ambitious habitat improvement to date. The thoughtfully designed space welcomes the casual visitor to observe and enjoy the natural
setting and provides much needed room to teach the groups of children who
visit for school or camp programs. The project was the culmination of a long and
challenging design phase followed by an equally intricate construction process.
Riverbend’s entire property committee was instrumental in the success of the
overall project. Thanks go to the Snider Foundation for the generous funding provided, Glackin Thomas Panzak for the in-kind donation of landscape architecture
services and to Wick Littleton of Littleton Landscape Contractors for his many
hours of in-kind general project management.
To compliment the educational experience of the garden, a comprehensive plant
guide was also developed and completed in 2010. It includes a photo, description and bloom time of the 118 native trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, ferns and
grasses growing in this lush patch of land. It is used in our educational programs
and is at the disposal of all visitors.

3. Master Site Plan Update
As the old adage goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words,”
therefore a video must be worth much more! Telling our story
through imagery and sound is a powerful tool that communicates
our purpose to the viewer in a way that the printed word cannot.
Thanks to the generous support of Cackie and Joe Rogers, our
work was brought to life and premiered at our spring fundraising
event, Friday Night Unplugged. Joe’s brother, Frank Rogers, contributed his considerable videographer skills and talent to create
an impactful video. It has been a wonderful way to inform and inspire people about our work. It can be viewed from the front page
of our website: www.riverbendeec.org.
In 2004, we adopted a ten year Master Site Plan for the entire Riverbend property. Since then, key master site plan recommendations have been implemented
and Riverbend has grown significantly as an organization. One of the objectives
in the 2008 Strategic Plan was to update the master site plan to provide for the
creation of innovative passive and active open space guided by our educational
goals. The plan focuses on the core of the Riverbend campus, a 10-acre area
bounded by deer fence.
A consulting team led by ML Baird & Co., working with staff and an ad-hoc
committee, produced an innovative plan featuring recommendations that are
ambitious yet realizable and maintainable. This plan highlights two priority
improvements that will enrich the unique identity of our site and expand the
distinctiveness of Riverbend. The first is a tiered pond that will engage all visitors
and enable Riverbend to serve the growing demand for a variety of programming a large pond will support. The second is a “West Loop” trail featuring a
variety of over-sized concepts illustrating habitats and behaviors from the natural
world to engage children and their imaginations. Concepts include a burrow,
cocoon, spiderweb and woven art installation culminating in a crow’s nest
lookout at a highpoint on the site offering views across the Schuylkill River and
Miquon.

Program Partner Highlight
Norristown Area School District
Riverbend has been bringing environmental education programs to all third and
fourth grade students at the six elementary schools in the Norristown Area School
District for five years. It includes teacher training, in-class, pre and post lessons, and
a field trip to Riverbend or, more recently, The Palace Mission. Additionally, thanks
to the support and partnership of the Junior League of Philadelphia, Riverbend helps
to host Family Science Night once a year at each school.
A
s our global society increases, sustaining the environment must become everyone’s responsibility. Education is the most powerful tool
for broadening understanding and increasing sensitivity and concern
for the environment. Helping children become stewards of the environment
is one of the most important legacies and gifts that may be provided to them.
Riverbend Environmental Education Center’s extraordinary commitment to
connecting children throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania with the environment is to be applauded.
Riverbend has helped fill the hearts and minds of students in the Norristown
Area School District with a sense of wonder and discovery of nature and
the environment. Students have had a unique opportunity to participate in
engaging lessons developed by the Riverbend staff and watched them unfold
through enriching experiences on Riverbend’s breathtaking grounds. Imagination and creativity abound as students connect to the environment.
Because of this program, Norristown Area School District students have
increased their awareness of and sensitivity to nature and the environment.
A highlight of the incredible partnership between Riverbend and our School
District has been the enrichment of the lives of our children and their families through environmental education and science nights. The instructional
practice of our teachers has also been enhanced through rich professional
learning activities provided by Riverbend.
As superintendent of the Norristown Area School District, it is a joy to see
the commitment of Riverbend. The work is leaving an indelible mark on
shaping perspectives and developing values regarding the environment. Our
society will certainly reap the benefit as Riverbend continues to grow stewards of the environment in such a positive, yet intentional manner.

Philanthrophic Partner Reflection - Ed Snider
A
s most readers of this report are aware, Ed Snider is a well-known
philanthropist in Philadelphia, with many worthy organizations and the
people they serve benefitting from his generosity. Many of you may also
know that Riverbend is one of those organizations and that Mr. Snider made
a very generous multi-year pledge that was fulfilled in 2010. In honor of this
gift, our signature Sears Roebuck Catalog Barn is now named The Snider
Barn and dedicated in honor of the Snider Family.
This important gift was designated for projects recommended in the 2004
Master Site Development Plan and when the commitment was made in 2005,
we were beyond thrilled about the positive impact it would have on our ability
to realize so many improvements to our site. From 2006 through 2010,
Riverbend invested almost $800,000, thanks to Mr. Snider and the generosity
of many other foundations, individuals, corporations, and public funding.
Each year we added to the list of improvements, both small and large. The most
significant projects include:
• Brick courtyard/outdoor teaching space with a native plant garden
• Lenape Village teaching area
• Porous paving parking lot and adjacent bioswale

Corporate Partner Highlight:
PECO’s Energizing Education Program
Riverbend is grateful for PECO’s generous,
ongoing support of our educational programs,
and we are delighted to have Mary Jane Roache,
PECO’s Director of Customer Care, as a board
member. PECO demonstrates environmental
leadership through its support of the PECO
Green Region Open Space Program and a
variety of environmental education initiatives.
Of particular significance is the PECO Energizing Education Program
for local middle school students. Riverbend’s Executive Director, Laurie
Bachman, is an original member of the steering committee that developed the program.
From our Partner:
The PECO Energizing Education Program, designed in partnership with the National
Energy Education Development Project (NEED) and The Franklin Institute, is a projectbased curriculum using hands-on activities to explore the sources and uses of energy
and the important role of energy efficiency in environmental conservation. The program
begins with a curriculum workshop for teachers at The Franklin Institute and then
combines a classroom component with a school energy audit, a field trip and/or
in-school program (PECO covers the cost for either), a community project and an
opportunity for the students to present their energy projects at a community event.
Since its inception in 2009, nearly 30 schools have participated in the program.
“We have experienced wonderful success with the PECO Energizing Education Program
over the past three years,” said Jeff Gordon, manager of Corporate Relations. “The
students continue to impress us with their understanding of energy conservation and
how they choose to share their knowledge with the community.”
PECO is proud to support Riverbend – one of the premiere environmental organizations in the region – in its efforts to introduce young people to the wonders of nature
and the importance of environmental preservation and energy conservation.

Summer Camp Junior Volunteer Program
Teens, 14 years of age and older, have been volunteering in our summer camp
program for many years, but in 2010, we formalized the program. In addition to
an application and interview process, the program requires volunteers to attend
six hours of training and to commit a minimum of three weeks of their time. The
Camp Junior Volunteers perform a vital role in Riverbend’s summer camp program
assisting camp staff with assigned tasks that help with the general management of
educational groups, primarily for children 4-6 years of age. In the first year, we had
a total of 25 teenagers participate in the program.
United Way Donor Choice
Riverbend became a United Way Donor Choice Agency in 2010. We hope you will
consider designating Riverbend as a recipient if you make annual contribution.

Moving up:
Board of Director News
On December 7, 2010, Lisa Thomas, RLA, AICP, LEED AP was
elected as Riverbend’s new board president. A principal of Glackin Thomas Panzak, a land planning and landscape architecture
firm in Paoli, PA, Lisa has been a board member at Riverbend
since 2007. Prior to her appointment as board president, Thomas
was chair of the property committee of Riverbend. Her expertise in
the development of site feasibility studies, environmental analysis studies,
site design, reforestation plans, open space management plans, and detailed
construction documentation plans has been vital to the improvements made to
Riverbend’s 30-acre preserve.
A warm welcome to:
Mary Jane Roache is a wonderful addition to Riverbend’s
board of directors, bringing considerable energy, leadership and problem-solving skills. She has spent her career in
the gas and utility business, the last 16 with PECO. An avid
gardener and bird watcher, she has a real affinity and commitment to our mission. MJ has been familiar with Riverbend
for many years, as her now college-aged daughter attended summer camp here when she was younger and she even hosted team-building
retreats at The Snider Barn many years ago.
Ellen Jordan comes to Riverbend with a strong commitment to the environment, a love of nature and a willingness
to share her considerable professional experience to benefit
our goals. With more than 24 years of experience in the
financial planning and wealth management industry, Ellen
currently provides comprehensive financial planning for existing and prospective clients in the Wealth Management Division of
The Bryn Mawr Trust Company.

served the last year of service (and never missed a board
meeting) even though she had relocated to Austin, Texas in
December, 2009. Her leadership was dynamic and impactful, helping Riverbend to witness significant growth organizationally. Of significance, Bev spearheaded the strategic plan that
was adopted by the board of directors in 2008 and she was instrumental
in accomplishing many of the plan’s objectives. She co-chaired Riverbend’s
most successfully single fundraising event to date, The Go Green Gala, in
2008, and she made a lasting impact through several significant introductions that have led to new donors, new board members and new program
partners that we continue to sustain today. It is with sincere gratitude that
Bev generously and graciously fulfilled her commitment to Riverbend.
