DGMC Newsletter A WEST SUBURBAN NETWORK FOR MUSICIANS AND FRIENDS Vol. 24 No. 3 A Downers Grove Music Club Publication December 2015 ‘A Notable Celebration of the Arts’ scores another success It ‘s mission accomplished for this year’s Notable Celebration of the Arts benefit concert, which raised $4,400 to once again fully fund the DGMC Student Music Awards. The awards are bestowed on local high school students in the spring. The November 14 event featured musical performances by Renée-Paule Gauthier, Chris Garofalo, Angela Presutti-Korbitz, Ron Korbitz and Amelia Smerz. A dessert reception catered by J. Fleming’s Absolutely Delicious and a silent auction featuring more than 60 packages ranging from artwork and tickets to dining and overnight stays completed the magical evening. Many thanks to all our planners and volunteers, as well as those who attended the event, bid on auction items and donated to the DGMC. December concert to feature works by Brahms, Craton The next concert of the Downers Grove Music Club-Downers Grove Public Library Music Series will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 1 at the First United Methodist Church, 1032 Maple Ave., Downers Grove. The program will feature performances on organ, piano and flute by Michael Surratt, Susan Lee, Emily Fallert and Barbara Dickerman. Don Newsom, piano, will offer members another chance to hear John Craton’s “Southern Indiana Sketches.” The suite was commissioned for the centenary of his father Robert H. Newsom and had its world premier as part of the DGMC’s December 2014 program. DGMC Newsletter -2- December 2015 House concert tickets available A limited number of tickets are still available for a private concert at 7:30 p.m., February 26 at the Westmont home of Chris Garofalo. The event will feature Chris Garofalo, piano; Jennifer Leckie, violin, and Sarah Younker, French horn, performing the Brahms Horn Trio and other selections. The private home concert was offered as a silent auction item for “A Notable Celebration of the Arts.” A donation of $35 is requested, with all proceeds benefitting the DGMC. A New Beginning: The annual Christmas concert featuring the premiere of two pieces written especially for Acappellago by Matthew Orlovich and Dale Trumbore, plus the Chicago premiere of “A Nyew Werk” by Irish composer Sean Doherty. Performances are 7:30 p.m., Saturday, December 5 at the Event Hall at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31 St., Oak Brook, and 4 p.m., Sunday, December 6 at the Congregational Church of Batavia, 21 S. Cantores Community Choir: This non-audition group is open to anyone high school age and older who enjoys singing, wants to learn more about music and wants to perform a wide range of musical styles and genres. Under the direction of Belford Hernandez, this choir performs a wide variety of four-part musical literature and styles. Cantores Community Choir is a member of DGMC. The Messiah: The Downers Grove Choral Society’s 55th Anniversary performance will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, December 7 at the First United Methodist Church, 1032 Maple Ave., DG. Featured performers are Carmina Burana and Kantorei: The Singing Boys of Rockford. The West Towns Chorus: Chartered in 1948, the group is one of the premier men’s a cappella choruses in the Chicago area, with a repertoire that includes barbershop, jazz, pop, show tunes and a wide selection of holiday favorites. The Heart of Christmas: The 25th Anniversary Christmas show featuring the Downers Grove North High School Chamber Singers and Benet High School Madrigals and will be held at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 12 and 2 p.m., Sunday, December 13 at the Tivoli Theater, 5021 Highland Ave., DG. Grant Street String Quartet: This quartet was formed in 2010 by four professional musicians in the western suburbs of Chicago. It is based in Downers Grove and is a member of DGMC.
