As a dentist in Downers Grove, Dr. Eric Jackson's concerns
go far beyond filling patients' cavities. He addresses all types
of lifestyle factors that can affect oral health, including
tobacco use.

"I treat oral health, which yes, is about fixing teeth, but there's
a lot more to it than just teeth and gums" Jackson said. "In
the end, my job is about prevention and preservation of
overall health."
This means Jackson continues to educate himself in areas beyond traditional dentistry, most
recently learning more about how to talk to his patients about tobacco use and cessation.
Cigarettes and other tobacco products can cause many preventable oral health conditions.
Conditions could include short term effects such as bad breath and long term effects such as
increased risk of oral diseases and oral cancer. Jackson noted that sometimes his patients who
smoke simply require more attention than nonsmokers for routine care such as cleanings or
teeth whitening.
To better serve his patients, Jackson recently took part in an "Ask, Advise, Refer" training held by

Respiratory Health Association and their partner at the DuPage County Health Department. The
Ask, Advise, Refer training equips healthcare providers with a brief evidence-based intervention
to support patients who are interested in quitting smoking.
"The Ask, Advise, Refer intervention is a great option for dental practices to adopt because it is
brief, simple and does not disrupt the practice routine. The training provides dentists, hygienists
and clerks the knowledge and tools to talk to patients about their tobacco use and to refer them
to local cessation resources," said Emily Zadikoff, Respiratory Health Association manager of
lung health initiatives and tobacco treatment specialist. Zadikoff presented Ask, Advise, Refer to
Jackson and his staff.
While there are many ways to get people's attention about smoking cessation, Jackson prefers
to spread news about oral health tips on his social media pages.
"It (social media) is a great noninvasive way for me to get the smoking cessation issue in front of
people and raise public awareness," Jackson said. "Also, it makes it easy for people share info
with others, too."
