Kim Davis discusses gay marriage with the pope Photos by Genessa Escobar The Culinary Arts class is teaming up with Stockton Beautiful to create a garden where the culinary students can grow fresh produce for dishes they create. “Growing and eating food from your own garden is safer than buying them,” said Lars Lundgren, Culinary Arts instructor. “By November we hope to see vegetables.” Their goal is to plant a garden so the students can learn to grow their own vegetables from seeds and use them in future meals. The garden will be located on the south side of campus, near Stuart Larson. To top it off the project is non-profitable to give the students the full experience The class applies scientific principles to research and development of food products and the food service industry. Stockton Beautiful, the team that is helping the Culinary team, was founded by Charles Lester and Gerry Dunlap in 1993. Over the years they have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for civic improvement. They are an organization that promotes the appreciation of Stockton through planting rose gardens and cleaning. Culinary Arts is a class in Career and Technical Education Department. Before you can take this class, you must first pass Food Science/Nutrition 1&2. Be sure to join and be part of the excitement. Within the past few months, the price of gas has substantially dropped. Pedestrian fills up his gas tank at Quick Stop with extremely cheaper gas. Genessa Escobar Features Editor Gas prices are decreasing rapidly. In fact, U.S. drivers can look forward to $2 gas prices later this year. Gas prices are going down because oil prices are going down. Reduction of Oil sales has happened due to many factors, such as the Iran Nuclear Deal, increase in American produced oil, no major disasters occurring in prime oil country such as the Gulf of Mexico, and lastly winter gasoline is the most inexpensive. “ I think the fact that gas prices are going down is a great thing. I do not drive but I will not feel as guilty when I catch a ride with friends,” said Jessie Villagram senior. The United States has not bought oil from Iran since 1995, but with the Iran Nuclear Deal it would enforce strict limitations on Iran’s nuclear program with an exchange for relief from economic sanctions, such as allowing Iran to sell oil to the United States. “Since I have a vehicle with poor gas mileage I was very pleased to hear the news,” said Dimaugio Gutierrez, sophomore. The national average is expected to fall 23 percent in 2015 to $2.60 per gallon, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. Lower prices at the Gas pump would bring more than $100 billion into the American economy over the course of the year. Gas prices should continue their decline throughout the year of 2015. The United States is just skimming the surface of our super-abundant oil and gas recourses. New fields have been discovered in Texas and North Dakota that could contain hundreds of years of shale oil and gas supplies. Falling gas prices have a huge effect for the economy because most Americans spend a huge amount of their hard earned money on gas. Currently, gas prices are the lowest they have been for this time of the year since 2009, according to gas price report. Enjoy the decreasing gas prices because gas prices increase and decrease regularly. “I plan on taking advantage of the decreasing gas prices by going on a few road trips with in the months to come, ” said Alayna Williams’s junior. Celebrity look-alikes see pg. 3 Homecoming court see pg. 4 Gas prices no longer a crisis Tristan Lomboy Staff Writer During his visit to the U.S., Pope Francis met with Kentucky clerk, Kim Davis, on Sept. 24 in Washington D.C.’s Vatican embassy, where Davis addressed her opposing views on gay marriage. After the meeting , Davis was arrested and held for six days after refusing a federal judge’s order to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. Davis has been at the center of nationwide controversy over whether businesses have a legal right to refuse to serve gay couples. This publicity assisted in attracting controversy toward Davis and led to her arrest. Davis was released on Sept. 30 and is still not issuing any marriage licenses. Back to work, Davis claims that she is committed to her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian toward gay marriage, even if it means more time in prison. Francis was asked if he supported individuals who claim that religious liberty is a reason to disobey the law. “Refusing and objecting is a right that is part of every human being,” said Francis. Since his election in 2013, Francis has been well perceived by liberals and the gay community because of his criticism on inequality. But his meeting with Davis and his apparent tolerance of her anti-gay marriage decision has convinced people into thinking that he was on her side. Francis’s meeting with Davis was not the first meeting he had with Americans involved in religious liberty cases. The pope met with various other groups as well, including the Little Sisters of the Poor, victims of physical abuse, and transgender people. Francis was last seen exiting the Vatican embassy in Washington D.C. after his short 15 minute meeting with Davis, who was with her husband. He presented both of them with rosaries before leaving the country. Davis continues to refuse marriage licenses to gay couples. She has stated that her decision to refuse to issue gay marriage licenses was done so under God’s authority. B A T H R O O M TROUBLES Opinion Johnathan Fisher Arts and Entertainment Editor While LHS ranks high in academic accomplishments, coming in at 385 out of the 2,199 high schools in California according to USnews.com, the school cannot say the same about the conditions of the bathroom facilities around campus. In general, the resources and facilities at LHS are exceptional, but when it comes to the conditions of the bathrooms some students and visitors are displeased. The bathrooms are ranked the lowest of every other aspect of LHS at only 4.8 out of 10 on the high school review site k12.niche.com. “When I use the restrooms, I feel as if I walked into a gas station. The puddles on the floor are disgusting. Many students do not use the urinals, w h i c h leads to over use of the stalls,” s a i d Dominic Gauuan, junior. “I strongly think that it’s now a case of the school giving up. In some bathrooms, there are locks missing from the stalls, which is unacceptable. I hope the school will fix this problem soon. I noticed the issue my freshman year. No telling how fast visitors make or chang their first impressions of our school when they reach the bathroom or even walk by them. I believe some students have given up on order and need to at the least attempt to maintain a level that some people deem acceptable.” The custodians have also noticed the issue of the state of the bathrooms. “The kids at Lincoln are mostly the cause of the messes. The students won’t do anything if the teachers are around though. Maybe the school can have more people patrolling making sure students don’t loiter,” said Jeff Robinson, custodian at LHS for two years. Karen Wilfong, custodian of 15 years, agrees that the school could do more. “I think the school can take action too. At least add stronger towel dispensers and strengthen separators or even the locks,” said Wilfong. The person in charge of the bathrooms at LHS is the Associate Superintendent of Human Resources Michele Marquez Tatum. The Lincolnian Staff atempted to contact with Tatum with no response. “I feel as if I walked into a gas station” photo courtesy of google images Kim Kardashian has become a model for most women. People look to Kim Kardashian for advice as to how they should look but she is really only a bad infuence. Kim Kardashian is all over the media, which causes her influence on body image to be greater. But should society praise her for her body with her excessive use of plastic surgery? There are many mixed opinions on this issue. “I think she is giving the wrong impression. Girls are going to look at her and think they need to look like her. It’s bad influence because she is famous because of her body and not her actions,”said Caleb Jynes, Senior. So she may not have the best influence personality wise, but what about her changing her body for society’s sake and having people praise her for it. “I know she’s confident and there isn’t anything bad about it,” said Malena Mendez, senior. Even though she is influencing the use of plastic surgery, it’s pretty refreshing to see the media focus on several different body types. The media will always focus on the petite size of models, but the Kardashian spotlight is reinforcing the idea that there isn’t an ideal body type. “It doesn’t matter how a body looks. It’s the way you are. It’s more personality, “ said Ryan Gueffroy, Junior. A persons personality should matter more to people than the way that somebody looks, but that is not how people view a person. The fact that people let one person in the world affect the way that they act and dress is crazy. People need to learn to be there own person and not allow others to negativly affect them. Donovan Gallego, a 14-year-old freshman violinist, has earned this honor because his friends and family admire him, and he’s the most committed violinist. Gallego played piano until fourth grade, played violin until sixth grade, and played trumpet in eighth grade. Gallego will be in upcoming the LHS orchestra concert on Oct. 27. When Gallego was in middle school he played in band and orchestra. He’s never had a solo concert before, but he’s played in piano recitals and band/ orchestra concerts. “I’m a talented young musician, who Will Jones, sophmore, seems to resemble the musican Miguel. But if you pick your list of horror movies to watch this Halloween, well you’re missing out on ours. 3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is based on real life events that happened during 1954-1957. The movie revolves around a group of kids going to check on their grandfather’s grave, and on their way there they take a small detour. That detour takes them to a crazy serial killer family. As the murderer takes his victims’ skin and wears it as a mask they have to try their hardest to escape. 2. Nightmare on Elm Street tells the story of the victims of the nightmare murderer Freddy Kruger. He thrives off of people’s fear, and if you are not afraid of him he will disappear. The only other way you can get rid of him is grabbing Freddy and waking up to bring him to the real world, but that is only a myth. 1. Halloween follows a young boy who is bullied and traumatized throughout his childhood. On the day of Halloween he gets a knife then brutally murders his sister. He goes to a mental institution and grows up there until he is grown. When he gets older he escapes, goes back to his house in his hometown and starts another killing spree on the day of Halloween. A walk into history Julian Padilla Staff Wrtier The Walk is a movie based on a true story about a man who tight roped across the twin towers. It happened on August 7, 1974 and it took him 45 minutes to walk across. He kneeled and lay down on the tight rope. Joseph Gordon Levitt portrays him in the movie; his real name is Philippe Petit. As a boy, Philippe Petit dreamed of performing daring feats for dazzled crowds. As an adult, his life’s dream came true when he became a high-wire artist who stared death in the face with every step. Under the help of mentor Papa Rudy, the French daredevil devised a plan to walk on a tightrope attached to the north and south towers of the World Trade Center. It was really dangerous to walk, kneel or lay down. When he made it to the other side of the rope cops were waiting for him and he was arrested. He was held in custody but all chargers were dropped. For Joseph Gordon Levitt to walk the tight rope Philippe Petit trained Levitt for a week and he got the hang of it. The Walk was premiered at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 26. It had an early release at IMAX theaters on Sept. 30, before the Oct. 9, release in 2D and 3D. The reviews from critics where pretty good. On IMBD it has a 7.9/10, on Rotten Tomatoes it has 86% of 100, and on Metacritic it has 70% of 100. The movie that came out before The Walk and was a documentary. Fetty Wap to the top Juan Solis Staff Writer Fetty Wap has recently dropped his first studio album appropriately titled Fetty Wap. Fetty Wap is a New Jersey singer and rapper. Who has recently been topping the charts with songs like “Trap Queen”, “679”, and “My Way”. On this album you will be getting very danceable instrumentals, some hard hitting beats, and of course Fetty’s signature drawn out singing style. Unfortunately, the album is not varied, and no risks were taken using Fetty Wap’s voice. The constant use of auto-tuned melodies, mentions of trap houses and verses from his group member Monty, get old around half way through. Too many songs over stay their welcome, allowing for their hooks to get stale before the third verse even comes around. The last five songs feature some of the worst songs on the entire album. They are boring, and for the most part unbearable, yet this album has some very redeeming qualities. When Fetty hits the mark for a good song, he does it well. Songs like “D.A.M.” and RGF Island demonstrate Fetty’s potential to make nice, catchy songs. “This record is hot as heck. I’m always bumpin this spicy record! I give this album a 17/38!” said Junior, Ryan Willard, a big fan of Fetty’s work. This win moved the Trojans to 13-2-2 on the season and 8-0-2 in league play, which has them in first place in the TCAL league. They are two games ahead of the Tracy Bulldogs, with five games left on the season, and they are all in-league games. “ Our team has done really well so far this season and we have been playing really well together. We have developed very good chemistry,”said Enrique Martinez, senior. The Trojans still have one more game against the Rams and it is the final game of the season on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at St. Marys. As long as the Trojans play how they have against all of their league opponents, they will have no problem winning the TCAL. The soccer team has played excellent this season compared to last season, and it looks like the new coach may have found a strategy that will lead to the Trojans future success.
