Auction Dedication
David Soule, Founder
Maine Irish Heritage Center
Welcome!
Welcome to the Maine Irish Heritage Center’s 2013 fourth annual NotSo-Silent Auction. This event is our major spring fundraiser, the result
of many long hours of volunteer time spent in planning, contacting local
businesses and supporters, and making sure that every detail is just perfect.
We hope that you enjoy sharing your evening with us.
The theme of tonight’s event is The Writers of Ireland. The Irish are a nation
of storytellers, and from this small island have come writers whose names
are known the world over, including four winners of the Nobel Prize for
Literature: William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett
and Seamus Heaney. Of the Irish, Time Magazine’s theater critic T.E.
Kalem wrote “The English language brings out the best in (them). They
court it like a beautiful woman. They make it bray with donkey laughter.
They hurl it at the sky like a paint pot full of rainbows, and then make it
chant a dirge for man’s fate and man’s follies that is as mournful as misty
spring rain crying over the fallow earth … Rarely has a people paid the
lavish compliment and taken the subtle revenge of turning its oppressor’s
speech into sorcery.”
We continue to be the “Not-So-Silent” Auction because, as we all know,
there is never a time when people of Irish background are together that
there can be anything approaching silence. We love to talk, we love to visit
with family, friends and neighbors, and we love to have fun, all at the same
time. Tonight’s auction, a combination of live and silent items, promises
to be a rousing good time. We hope that you all have something to say,
through enthusiastic bidding, and that you say it early and often. Please enjoy the evening, the good company, the friendly competition and the great
values. Thank you for supporting MIHC and helping us fulfill our mission.
Thank you David from all the Irish of Maine.
Your vision, leadership, determination, hard work and faith
helped create the Maine Irish Heritage Center, a place
where all can celebrate and learn about their Irish Heritage.
A Note from Our Chair
As has been the case since the inception of the Maine Irish Heritage
Center, our recent successes could not have been accomplished without
the dedication, skills, and hard work of a large number of volunteers,
Board members, supporters and community members. Tonight’s event is
an example of the result of many people working together to bring about
a gathering that is a fundraiser, to be sure, but is so much more: a chance
for friends to get together, to catch up on the news, to laugh, to renew their
commitment to their heritage, and to benefit a cause in which they believe.
While we are extremely grateful for the efforts of all of the people who
donate their time, their expertise, their resources and their good humor
to the MIHC, we wish to highlight the contributions of four specific
individuals who have been with us for many years, and who have given us
countless hours of volunteer time based on their unflagging belief that the
MIHC is a place of culture, scholarship, community and friendship.
Sue Flaherty, who holds a Masters degree in Library Science, is responsible
for the MIHC’s extensive library—well over 2,000 books, videos, DVD’s,
CD’s, and and a wealth of other reference and historical documents. Sue’s
skill and resourcefulness resulted in our entire catalog being online and
accessible through our website. Sue has been successful in obtaining grant
funds for new library equipment and software, for special exhibits such as
the upcoming 2014 Lincoln exhibit and our annual Bloomsday event, and
she is a willing volunteer at MIHC events. Whether she is selling books,
operating the checkout at the auction or giving tours, she is always on the
job as one of the most informed and competent MIHC ambassadors.
Sue and Lanny DeRoche have been long-time volunteers at the MIHC.
Lanny is a St. Dom’s alum, and Sue, who is not the least bit Irish, fell in
love with the building, its history and the MIHC’s potential early on. It
has been their dream for our library to serve as a research and genealogy
center, and for many years, they have been active members of the MIHC
Library Committee, often spending long hours unpacking book donations
or assembling new library furniture and shelving. Both Lanny and Sue
have served in many other capacities, including ushering at weddings and
receptions, helping to run the office, doing family research, staffing our
tent at the Saltwater Celtic Music Festival each July, and generally keeping
things organized and moving forward. Sue has also maintained the MIHC
database for several years, becoming proficient with Past Perfect museum
software, and transferring our 2,700-person database to it.
Sherry Doherty served as our technology “guru” for several years before
she joined the MIHC Board. As our volunteer webmaster, she has worked
tirelessly to present our best face to the public and to ensure that our
website was kept up to date with upcoming events and other information
important to our members and friends. While juggling a busy business
schedule and the demands of two very active young sons, Sherry somehow
always found time to update the MIHC’s website and to broadcast the
MIHC’s news to our email database, often working in the middle of the
night. As a member of our Board of Directors, she provided invaluable
input on all matters technological, and exhibited amazing patience with
her many technology-challenged fellow Board members. Sherry continues
to stay involved and to help on projects that need her expertise.
We hope that you have a wonderful evening. In addition to the treasures
that you bid on and take home, please also enjoy the intangible treasures
that tonight makes possible – old and new friends, a good meal, shared
memories, and lots of laughter.
With my most sincere gratitude and affection,
Mary McAleney
Chair, Board of Directors
AuctionRules
Values listed in this program and on bid sheets are estimates only, and may
not reflect actual value. We have endeavored to describe items carefully
and correctly, but the MIHC provides no warranties with respect to the
items offered. All items are sold as is and all sales are final.
Payment is expected before the items may be removed from the MIHC.
Payment may be by cash, check, or credit card. Large items may be left
at the MIHC awaiting a later pickup, as long as arrangements are made
with MIHC representatives. The MIHC does not provide transportation
for auction items.
To bid on silent auction items, you must write your name, your bidder
number and your bid on the bid sheet. Please note that many of items
have minimum bids and may be withdrawn if the minimum bid is not met.
Should the highest bid for a silent item be disqualified for any reason, the
next lower bid will be deemed to be the winning bid. The silent auction
ables will close from 6:15 -6:45 and an announcement will be made several
minutes before the tables close.
The live auction will begin at 7:30. Some items have reserve bids and may
be withdrawn if the reserve level is not met. The auctioneer is the final
authority for live auction item bidding

SAIL ON CASCO BAY
The lucky winner will receive a freshly baked loaf of Irish Bread every
month for an entire year. Jack O’Brien will provide the bread which is
the result of many years of experimenting with the recipes of family and
friends. You will not be disappointed.
Spend an afternoon sailing beautiful Casco Bay! Pete Clifford, will host
up to 4 guests on his Pearson 33 foot sloop, “Riparian,” which is moored
at the Portland Yacht Club. The date is flexible and will be determined by
mutual agreement. If weather on the proposed sailing date is rainy, cold,
too windy, or not windy enough, the Cap’n will allow the crew to pick a
new date. Note from the Captain: Flogging of the crew was outlawed
by the Geneva Convention in 1919, so the lucky bidder can expect to be
treated in a humane and respectful manner.

Special Thanks
We also want to offer our heartfelt
thanks to Ric Hanley, long time
board member and volunteer. Ric
joined the board of the Maine Irish
Heritage Center ‘before the bell
fell’ but claims no responsibility for
its demise. Undaunted by the crash,
Ric continued to dedicate his time
and energy to the Irish of Maine.
He currently serves as Vice Chair
and also served as Secretary to the
board. Not one for figures, he roped
the love of his life, Liz, into being
the bookkeeper for a time. Ric can
be counted on to raise funds, clean
the floors, run registration, and most
of all, bring food to feed the volunteers. Ric’s positive, can-do attitude
extends to his large Irish clan, the Hanley’s of the Kennebec. The Hanley
clan family and friends, at least three generations, are here tonight, as
always, helping to make the auction and the Maine Irish Heritage Center
a success. As one friend of the Irish said “That guy does everything.” Ric,
for your energy and wise counsel, we are grateful!

Aucocisco Galleries is a contemporary fine art gallery originally
established in 2000 in Portland’s Arts District in both the Congress
Square Building and in the Eastland Park Hotel.
The primary focus is on presenting mid career artists along
with emerging newer artists and, on occasion, art works from the
secondary market is sold from artist estates and private collections.
All of our gallery artists shown and represented have a significant
and direct connection to the state of Maine or, quite simply, the
state has played a significant part of their identity as visual artists.
In 2005, Aucocisco closed its two original gallery locations at
615 Congress Street and 157 High Street at the Eastland Park
Hotel, and then relocated into another larger space comprised of
three inter-connected storefronts in the Congress Square Building
otherwise known as the State Theatre Building.
In 2009, Aucocisco left the Arts District altogether and moved
to Portland’s premiere retail block on Upper Exchange Street in
the city’s historic Old Port District. Here, we continue to feature a
program of monthly installations of art by our regularly committed
artists and invited guests.
