THE UNIVERSITY
Dedicated to the Advancement of the Human Condition
Akamai Community News
From the desk of the President
The Akamai Movement Forward
As our University searches for a correct and viable path forward,
we continue to hold fast to our founding mission to move steadily toward contributing to the advancement of the human condition and sustainability of the planet. From the start, we have sought out likeminded professional academics and professionals who are committed
to the same lifelong mission as our founders.
Among our most vital achievements this past year has been the establishment of a faculty research team to build toward a textbook, for
which we have a working title of Educational Transformation: The
University as Catalyst for Human Advancement, for which we have
twenty members of the faculty building chapters for this achievement.
It is clear that this faculty team believes that as the present age progresses, the University, as an global institution, must be prepared to
transform it's purpose or be prepared to fade away. As the human culture continues its evolution and as the challenges facing us continue
to become more complex and devastating, higher education must assume the forefront and serve as a catalyst for human advancement.
An added achievement this past year has been the development of
our interactive platform for online education. The Akamai eCampus,
is now poised for full implementation, containing a vast array of content equivalent with what might be found in a traditional residential
campus environment. The Akamai eCampus incorporates the eclassroom instructional environment with a many student-instructor
interactive capabilities, with an e-library and textbook access, online
journals ,and research paper publication for faculty an students, an
online conferencing and socializing platform, and many other features
that make the Akamai eCampus a world-class learning environment.
Further to our advancement forward is the exceptionally active and
effective Academic Council, now with eleven members of our honorable faculty now participating. The exceptional contributions, over
the past decade, from faculty leaders such as Dr. James Wear, Dr.
Mary Jo Bulbrook, and our current Chair, Dr. Sandra Kolbl-Holman,
has brought this fledgling advisory council to a status of highly effective and supportive of the University mission and vision.

President Douglass Capogrossi Honored
at Palawan State University, Philippines
A few short weeks ago, President Douglass Capogrossi, was fortunate to travel with his wife of 28 years,
Fely Angeline Capogrossi, to the Island of Palawan in the Philippines to attend numerous gatherings of academic
leaders and graduate business students. Among those in attendance were Dr. Jeter S. Sespene, President at Palawan
State University and Dr. Ben Lee, Vice President for Asia Business Programs, Akamai University.
The Palawan State University (PSU) is a government-funded public university in Puerto Princesa, Palawan,
Philippines. PSU was established in 1965. After 48 years, it has emerged as the premier university in the province
of Palawan, with more than 16,000 students and almost 1,000 faculty and staff members. Palawan State University
has 17 campuses. The main campus situated in Tiniguiban, Puerto Princesa City has seven colleges established to
fulfill the university’s four-fold function of instruction, research, extension and production. It is sprawled on a 20hectare site where the Central Administration and Executive offices, undergraduate colleges and the Laboratory
High School are located.
Dr. Capogrossi was honored to gather with long time Akamai faculty members, Dr. Premkumar Rajagopal and
Dr. Harwindar Singh, and attend the quality delivery of their educational seminars at PSU. Dr. Premkumar Rajagopal has recently served as the Vice Chancellor of AIMST University, Malaysia, where bis vision for that institution resulted in great advancements for the school. Dr. Premkumar's teaching and consulting interests include
corporate strategic management, organizational behavior and development, people management, and logistics and
supply chain management. . Dr. Harwindar Singh is a consultant and trainer in the area of corporate strategic, managing change, financial analysis, credit evaluation, loan recovery, strategic financial management,
financial modeling, and other management, risk and strategy related topics.
As an important part of the festivities, Akamai University honored Dr. Jeter S. Sespene, with an award for his
outstanding environmental achievements, whereby he brought his PSU campus to the status as Philippines Best
Green University back in 2009 and has maintained progress forward since that date. Akamai and PSU entered a
formal affiliation with the signing of an intent agreement and discussions regarding wys they might progress in
mutual support of the missions of both Universities. PSU awarded Dr. Capogrossi with the Presidential Merit
Award for outstanding academic achievements toward advancing transnational higher education and as a Senior
Fellow an Adjunct Professor, given the privileges of engaging in instruction, research, extension and related professional services.

Contra Dancing a la Project Nature Connect
According to Dr. Michael J Cohen, Director of Akamai University Applied Ecopsychology Program, “we, on San Juan Island, call our weekly conta dance an organic dance with an organic band,
caller and dancers because it and we are home grown/local here, are unpolluted, restorative, teach each
other, and, like nature, the dance is free. It’s as if we are dancers in the peaceful family dance of the
global life community of sunlight and everything else in balance. I informally began contra-dancing
and calling in 1945 long before I started teaching the Nature-Connected Psychology of educating and
healing with nature.”
He states further that “sometimes contra dancers discover my nature-connection background and
do workshops or courses with me in Applied Ecopsychology due to their interests in it. The outcome
of this blend has at time been staggering, so much so that we had a half-hour consensual waiting period before folks drove home because their concentration was not what it should have been as a
driver. Instead, their thoughts and feelings were contra dancing with the Universe and Nature. This
connection beneficially strengthened the body mind and spirit of each dancer. It was fun and safe as
long as they were not driving at the same time.
Strange as it might seem, states Dr. Cohen,, “the contra dance/universe blend led some folks to
look for evidence of contra dancing in the Universe, and vice versa, stranger still they began to find
them. By the end of one workshop, each motion or figure in the Dances was also found somewhere in
the Universe, including in our DNA, senses and feelings. It was as if we were contra dancing in or
through the Hubble telescope. “
Benefit from empowering, online, your livelihood and prior experience to be more resilient, validated, green, holistic, environmental, sustainable, natural, nature-connected, healthy, spiritual, organic
and peaceful.

New University Blog Created: The Akamai Interchange
The Akamai University Blog was established by Jakob Kelby, a Friend of Akamai, to provide a platform
through which the Akamai Community, students, faculty and staff, might interchange news of professional
achievements, alert the community about coming events, provide news of past events, awards and achievements,
and present items in furtherance of the Akamai University mission.
The educational benefits of blogging are diverse, including the promotion of critical and analytical thinking,
increased access and exposure to quality content and a combination of solitary and social interactions with academic peers (Drs. Fernette and Brock Eide). Additionally, at Akamai, it is understood that blogs can be an answer to isolation for distance learning students who wish to enter dialogue with fellow students at a distance.
For the University to get an ethical start with a Community Blog, it seems appropriate that we all understand
Basic Blogging Etiquette and Blogging Etiquette for Referencing and Citations. It also makes good sense to
have a clear focus and a code of ethics for the University Community to adhere to in the blogging environment.
Let us follow a principle that has been followed at Akamai since its founding, in that all we do as a community,
we do in support of our founding mission. Let us then, together, seek the amelioration of major world problems
and the creation of sustainable lifestyles and global practices as the hallmarks of responsible individual and corporate world citizenship. As generators of new knowledge and developers of new systems, our sole mission as an
institution is the advancement of the human condition and sustainability of the planet. That which we post online
should reflect the highest of integrity and the fostering of achievement that would be honored across the global
community. Following are recommended topics to be established on the Akamai Interchange for exploration
among members of the Akamai community and higher education practitioners worldwide:
eCampus effectiveness
educational transformation
student interactive and social opportunities
University leadership advancement
Individualization of student learning and research
mentorship and guided practicum
affiliations worldwide for field study sponsorships

Mentored Distance Learning at Akamai University
Traditional research literature shows overwhelmingly that distance learning can
achieve cognitive outcomes equal to those achieved by the more traditional means
of educational delivery for adults. In fact, distance learning is understood to have an
advantage over more traditional strategies when learning is closely aligned and related to the reality of life and work, such as under conditions where students remain
fully engaged with their professional tasks while under the mentorship of qualified
academics.
The interrelationship of academic projects within the work situation of the student permits effective integration of new learning with experience and the genuine
tasks of the practitioner. This form of outcome, applied and integrated, differs
greatly from simply providing disconnected sets of theories, principles and practices, no matter how well organized or financially endowed the presentation. Integration of knowledge that is done by students is likely to be more meaningful than
integration that is done for them. Thus, engaging the adult student in creating and evaluating knowledge is viewed as
a more viable epistemology. It is this vital factor that justifies Akamai’s model of education, its systems of mentorship, independent study and external projects, since this engages adult students in organizing their own knowledge,
rather than simply storing the inferences and appropriate sets of data that were put together by the experts.
This advanced instructional approach requires that the educational institution treat knowledge more openendedly, allowing students to theorize more for themselves, giving them greater access to the data, greater responsibility and freedom, and the opportunity to engage in critical thinking, matching theories against real world observations. If an essential goal of higher education is to help students develop the ability to continue learning after the
formal education is complete, it seems reasonable that they should have a good deal of supervised experience in
learning independently. This can easily be carried out through the types of educational experiences afforded by
Akamai University in which qualified mentors help the adult student formulate problems, find answers, and evaluate
their progress themselves. (McKeachie, 1986, p. 143)
In summary, delivery of distance education at Akamai University relies heavily upon vital instructional models
including one-on-one mentorship, responsibility and autonomy in learning, individualization of study, the active
learning process, applied and process-centered curricula, and project-oriented learning environments. These elements of the Akamai instructional model for distance learning, assure maximum benefits in serving the needs of our
adult students. This advanced model of distance education, together with high quality instructors, and access to a
wide array of learning materials, a world-class eCampus, permit Akamai to conduct effective programs at a distance.

MR. J. JONDHI HARRELL
NATIONALLY ACCLAIMED CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM LEADER
CONTRIBUTING EDITOR FOR IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD®
The Founder and Executive Director of The Center for Returning Citizens http://www.tcrcphilly.org and nationally acclaimed criminal justice reform thought leader, Mr J. Jondhi Harrell will don the mantle
of Contributing Editor for In Search of Fatherhood® when his stirring
essay, “The Aftermath Of ‘I Can’t Breathe’: Social Justice In America” is published in the March 2015 issue of the quarterly international
Fatherhood and Men’s Issues Journal. The March 2015 issue of In
Search of Fatherhood® is scheduled for release on 15 March 2015.
Editor of In Search of Fatherhood® , Ms Diane Sears has been a Friend
of Akamai and advisor in the field of Men’ Studies and Fatherhood
since 2004 and it was by her kind introduction that we are able to make
known Mr J. Jondhi Harrell to the Akamai UniversityCommunity
A truth teller, Mr. Harrell runs down parallel tracks in “The Aftermath
Of ‘I Can’t Breathe’: Social Justice In America”. He rails against
structural barriers experienced by African American communities -inequalities in employment, housing, education, justice, economics, and class. And in the same breath, like a loving parent, he cajoles and counsels the African American community. What does he say? Here is a sample:
“Build strong families. That means getting married and being loyal to your mate.
Fathering children in your own house, not in many. It means raising children, paying
bills, paying child support, being a good father. It means not leaving your family to be
supported by the state, but working to build the family structure. . . . Community building
is important . . . .”
A charismatic visionary who brings a solutions-based tone to the National Dialogue on Mass Incarceration
and Criminal Justice Reform, Harrell grew up during the American Civil Rights era. It is this experience
that moves him to issue a powerful call through “The Aftermath Of ‘I Can’t Breathe’: Social Justice In
America”:
“ . . . When the history of this time is written, when this movement changes society as we
know it, where will you stand in this flow of time? Will you be one of those who actively
created the change or simply a bystander? Just as Dr. King called across the country for
people to come to Selma, we call all those with a clear mind, willing spirit, and righteous
heart to assist in the struggle.”
For more information about Mr. Harrell’s work on Mass Incarceration and Criminal Justice
Reform and how, under his dynamic leadership, The Center for Returning Citizens
utilizes a restorative approach to ameliorate the crippling effects of mass incarceration
upon individuals, families, and communities, visit www.tcrcphilly.org or call the
organization at 1 (215) 305-8793.
