Squirt A Stefan Rivard The Life of Hockey and career of Stefan Y Rivard (“Rivy”) as he is known to so many. Stefan was born in New Liskeard Ontario, Canada. His passion for Hockey started as a little boy and playing at the rink down the street from his house. He could be found there every night playing the game he loves. His dedication and hard work would eventually take him on a journey for years playing around the World and away from home. He played for the New Liskeard Minor Hockey. He played 1 year Midget B & Midget AAA for the Cubs as a forward. When he was in High School he decided to move an hour and half away with family to fulfill one of his dreams and play in the OHL in the Canadian Hockey League. He was invited to camp and made the roster for the North Bay Centennials which had been a very exciting time for him. He played there from 1991-1995. He won the Championship in North Bay 1993. He also played in the Memorial Cup for North Bay Centennials. This was also a challenging time for him as he moved away from his parents and sisters. He then made his journey and began playing his first year in his professional career with the Columbus Chill (ECHL) in 1995-1996 season. This was something he always desired and set out to achieve since he started playing hockey. As his passion for the game continued he decided to go overseas and play over in Germany 1996-1997 for the Berlin Schlittschut Club (Germany 2). This was interesting time for Stefan to experience playing on the other side of the world for a Premiere Hockey Club. Then came a big part of his professional career when he started playing for the Birmingham Bulls (ECHL) 1997-2001 in which he wore the “A”. He also got called up & played some games from 1999-2002 seasons for (4 AHL teams) Providence Bruins being the first call up he received. In addition to the Bruins call up he also played for the Hartford Wolf Pack, Lowell Lock Monsters, & Portland Pirates in the AHL. In 2001 the Birmingham Bulls moved their team to Atlantic City where Stefan would end up finishing his last few years in his Pro career playing for the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies and proudly wearing the “C” for the team. His dream of a winning a championship before he would decide to retire the following season came true when he won the Kelly Cup Championship in 2003 with Bullies which would be the biggest moment of his career. He also set some records for himself while playing for the Bullies. In 2003 he achieved scoring his 400th Career point. A week later he played his 500th career game vs Reading. However, his biggest achievement on the ice came when they raised & retired his #21 as a Boardwalk Bullie in a ceremony at Boardwalk Hall. His retirement would be the end to a well achieved Pro career but his love for the game will never end. Stefan was fortunate enough to have many great coaches during his career. In addition he played with many great players and some of them have played in the NHL. Interesting facts about Stefan Rivard’s pro career: • He attended the Hershey Bears Camp (AHL) in 1995 • He attended the Cincinatti Cyclones Camp (IHL) in 1997. • His call up with the Providence Bruins was with the current Philadelphia Flyers Coach-Peter Laviolette • He played 8 out of 9 years of his Pro career for the ECHL. • He was a Players Rep for the Players Union for numerous years. • In 2000-2001 he was on the playoff roster for Lowell Lock Monsters and the Coach was Bruce Boudreau (currently Coach of Anaheim Ducks). His passion for hockey did not stop when he retired. As he was a role model for so many during his career he then continued to be a role model for youth hockey shortly after he retired. He wanted to be able to help so many kids with the same dreams and goals he had. So, he started coaching for the Haviland Family and the Jr. Titans Program. He then came where he is now to the Flyers Skate Zone in Atlantic City. It was with pride and joy he would begin coaching his son Brent a few years ago and now is the Coach for the Atlantic City Sharks Squirt Team. He now resides in Northfield with his wife Shannon, daughter Celena, and son Brent. His passion for the game will continue with coaching youth hockey and teaching so many kids the greatest sport ever.
