The month of Advanced Placement Exams (AP’s), the last day of school for seniors, the 5K race at Dulaney, Senior Prom, Grad Gala and Graduation. It is an exciting time for our students, but also a bittersweet time. As the mom of a senior (my youngest child) it is the end of my time as being a Dulaney parent. Come June, I will be the mom of Dulaney alumni. After six years at Dulaney it will feel very strange to not be a parent of a high school student. My years at Dulaney have been wonderful. I love the school and my children received a wonderful education here. Being a part of the PTSA enabled me to form relationships and friendships with many parents and staff. I was able to voice my opinions and concerns and be aware of much of the news around the school and the district. The opportunity to have been a part of my children’s high school years at Dulaney is priceless. These days and years are gone forever and I know I made the most of them. 15 Grad Gala Committee, 7:00 pm, Library 16 Parent Teacher Conferences by appointment 16 NAHS Induction, 6:00 pm, Satellite Cafeteria 17 NHS Senior Breakfast, 6:45 am 23 PTSA General Board of Director’s Meeting, 7:00 pm Many of the PTSA Board and Committee Chairs and members are “graduating” this year. Our children are in need for parents to step up and become a part of this wonderful school community. Please contact me if you can help out in anyway. 24 Last day for seniors 24 Senior Prom, 7:00 pm-11:00 pm, Martin’s West 24- 25 Grad Gala, 11:30 pm-3:30 am Towson University 27 Memorial Day -SCHOOLS CLOSED TBD Graduation Rehearsal @ Towson University TBD Senior Awards Ceremony 7 pm (Invitation Only) Prom is just a few short weeks away. Prom has been the dream of many of our children, and us during our high school years of this perfect night celebrating our senior year. But, with prom night comes many risks and worries. Some suggestions for parents: Make sure you know the complete plan for the evening, including locations where your child will go and what time you expect him or her home. There’s nothing wrong with asking what restaurant, other home or location he or she will visit during the evening. That’s the obligation of parents and teens may appreciate it, even as they roll their eyes. Have contact information for other parents involved in your teen’s memorable night. If there is any issue, phone numbers and street addresses are invaluable. Be there when your teen leaves and don’t go to sleep until you know he or she is home safely. Let teens know you’ll be willing to talk or come get them anytime they may want to call. TBD Graduation @ Towson University JUNE 1 SAT 3 Sports Booster 7:00 pm, Library 6 PTSA Board of Director’s Meeting, 7:00 pm, Library 8 ACT 14 Schools close 3 hours early 17 Schools close 3 hours early 18 Last Day of School, Schools close 3 hours early Dulaney High School PTSA Newsletter From the President (cont.)... MAY If you haven’t had conversations about sex, alcohol and drugs, muster up your parenting responsibilities and talk candidly. Prom night generates peer pressure to push boundaries so discuss limits and repercussions. Don’t talk down to your teen or lecture with scare tactics. A better approach is, “I know you already know this, but I want you to be safe and have fun, so…” Assure your son or daughter it’s okay for them to call you if they feel uncomfortable in any situation and want to come home. You may want to develop a code word so a teen doesn’t have to say, “My driver is drinking – come get me.” 1 Sequel Preview 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm, Room 309 1 Grad Gala Committee, 7:00 pm, Library 2 Open Mic Night, 6:00 pm, Amphitheater 3 Interims distributed to seniors 4 SAT 6-17 AP Exams 6 Sports Booster 7:00 pm, Library 8 Grad Gala Committee, 7:00 pm, Library 9 Internship Night, 7:00 pm, Library 10 Interims distributed to underclassmen 13 SIT Team Meeting, 3:00 pm-4:00 pm, Library May 2013 Getting to and from the prom is always a concern, particularly because teens may be distracted and many vehicle accidents are on weekends, when more alcohol-impaired drivers may be on the road. Teens may also be inexperienced drivers, or may be riding with a peer with limited driving experience. 15 Grad Gala Committee, 7:00 pm, Library 16 Parent Teacher Conferences by appointment 16 NAHS Induction, 6:00 pm, Satellite Cafeteria 17 NHS Senior Breakfast, 6:45 am 23 PTSA General Board of Director’s Meeting, 7:00 pm 24 Last day for seniors 24 Senior Prom, 7:00 pm-11:00 pm, Martin’s West 24- 25 Grad Gala, 11:30 pm-3:30 am Towson University 27 Memorial Day -SCHOOLS CLOSED TBD Graduation Rehearsal @ Towson University TBD Senior Awards Ceremony 7 pm (Invitation Only) The PTSA sponsors Grad Gala, the post prom party. This event is free to all seniors and their guests. The Grad Gala committee has worked very hard all year to ensure a fun and safe place for our seniors to go after prom. But, some students may still encounter danger so please talk to children. If you have not volunteered to help out at Grad Gala, please do so. 150 volunteers are needed to run the event. For parents of younger children, this is a great way to see what Grad Gala is all about. Parents of juniors: we need parents to begin planning for the Class of 2014 soon. The Grad Gala is run completely by parents. Please volunteer, it will help prepare you for your child’s senior year. It is so important to make the most of these high school years! Lyn Whitlock, Principal It is Spring—the season of testing! Our seniors are working to complete a very short grading period and prepare for graduation. Many will be taking Advanced Placement Exams during the first two weeks of May and then directly (actually some overlap) into final exams for all seniors. Juniors have just completed the first total-school SAT Day successfully. We are excited to receive the scores soon and help students prepare for their senior year. Sophomores and freshmen will take Maryland High School Assessments (H.S.A.’s) beginning May 20, and then begin preparation for final exams. These exams are important as preparing for them helps students assimilate a full year of learning so they can continue to grow academically. And the final exam grade will affect the permanent final grade on the student’s transcript. It is very important to finish the year strong, so attend on time every day and stay focused on learning. School Safety has always been very important and has received new emphasis in light of recent events. As those who have visited since spring break know, we now have a buzzer entry system. In the next few weeks we will have additional cameras to monitor activity. We will also add the Raptor Identification System during the spring with full implementation by fall. All visitors, including parents, will need a photo ID such as a driver’s license to visit the building. A data base will be kept of all visitors. Check out the new free mobile app, BCPS Now. It is available on iPhones, iPods, and Android phones and devices. You will be able to access the latest BCPS news, calendars and school closings, and other information at your fingertips. We Are One- All In! Lyn Whitlock, Principal . New Security System at BCPS Schools The safety of all students and staff in Baltimore County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us. Our school is utilizing a system for checking in all visitors. The system is called V-soft by RaptorWare or Raptor. When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID, or a driver’s license to a staff member in the school office. The ID will be scanned and the following information will be collected: your photo, your name, and your date of birth. This information will be utilized to check you in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases throughout the country. If your name appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the school to scan your ID, you will not be allowed access to the school. The only alternative will be to allow the staff to see your ID, verify your first name, last name, and date of birth to be entered into the system manually. However, this method does not store the information, and you must do this each time you visit the school. If you have your ID scanned, you will be asked to show your ID only on future visits, and your name will be selected from an existing list of previous visitors. You will also be asked to check out with the office staff upon leaving the school so that we know you are no longer in the building. You will be required to check into the system even if you are only coming to school to pick up your child. The information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is kept on a secure server. Your assistance in keeping our students and schools safe is appreciated. This is an all day/whole class event utilizing the talents of our teachers, counselors, parents, Dulaney upperclassmen, and community members, in an effort to assist our 10th graders with their future planning. The morning sessions will be about “planning your next 2 years.” This will include seminars on transcripts, resumes, college admissions and PSAT/SAT testing. The middle of the day will include lunch provided by Dulaney, fun team-building activities, and a panel of Dulaney seniors, there to answer questions about what sophomores can expect in the next two years. In addition to this, we will offer an evening session for parents of sophomores. Parents will be able to get more details about the sophomore retreat day to gather information toward helping their son’s or daughter’s through the decision making of the next two years. School budgets continue to be reduced and for those who are able, we’re asking for parents to make monetary contributions to help us serve the needs of our students. Any additional funds will be transferred to the sophomore class for their senior prom and graduation. We hope you will attend the evening session in the library on: May 14th from 6:00pm – 7:00pm To make a donation: Checks should be made payable to Dulaney High School/Sophomore Retreat.
