Proudly brought to you by the Waikato Rugby Union
and St Peter’s School Cambridge
Introduction
Welcome to the Waikato in the North Island of New Zealand, home of the
Waikato Rugby Union and the International Player Development Programme.
The Waikato Rugby Union, together with St Peter’s School, are offering an exciting opportunity for
overseas students to develop their rugby skills, while also experiencing an adventure outdoor
education programme at one of New Zealand’s leading schools.
Founded in 1921, Waikato Rugby Union has a proud history of rugby culture and success, having
produced 62 All Blacks and consistently being among the top performing provincial unions in the
country.
This foundation has created a pathway for today’s innovative and forward thinking player
development schemes. The Waikato Rugby Union (WRU) International Player Development
Programme is an integral part of upholding this commitment to excellence.
The Waikato Rugby Union has identified player development as the number one priority in
achieving success. As a result we have full time rugby development staff including three ITM Cup
coaches, an Emerging Players Manager and four Rugby Development Coaches.
We also have three outstanding strength and conditioning coaches that will push you to your
limits and motivate you to work harder for success. Other providers within the Waikato Rugby
Union include a nutritionist, sport psychologist and personal development staff.
We are committed to nurturing and developing your individual skills so you make the most of
your time in New Zealand and go away with the focus of achieving your desired goals in rugby.
We look forward to welcoming you to the heart of rugby in New Zealand and the home of
Waikato Rugby, from our headquarters at the magnificent Waikato Stadium.

St Peter’s School Campus - Cambridge
The WRU International Player Development Programme is based on the
picturesque campus of St Peter’s School in Cambridge.
St Peter’s School, one of New Zealand’s leading co-educational schools, is situated on 100 acres
of park like grounds just outside the town of Cambridge (15 kilometres from Hamilton City) in the
heart of the Waikato province.
The facilities include a gymnasium with a large weights and cardio room, squash courts, tennis
courts, golf driving range and a heated indoor swimming pool for recovery purposes.
Players will also be exposed to training principles and techniques of high performance athletes
from other sports. The school is situated next to the Avantidrome – home of New Zealand Cycling
and Triathlon, which will host part of the outdoor adventure component to the programme.
St Peter’s School will be responsible for the pastoral care of each individual and they will live on
campus or at a nearby school homestay for the duration of the programme.
4
Player Development
The three specific aspects of player development facilitated are rugby
development, strength and conditioning, and personal development.
The Waikato Rugby Union is regarded nationally as a leader in player development and bases
the holistic programme around the six pillars of player development:

Technical

Tactical

Physical

Mental

Nutrition

Leadership
When entering the programme, each player is individually assessed across the six pillars of player
development. This initiates the direction of the four week schedule for each person with their own
Individual Performance Plan created to guide them to their full potential.
5
Player Development
Players are physically tested, programmed and monitored by WRU high
performance staff through the duration of their training phase.
Gym sessions will be individually programmed to the training age, priorities and needs of each
player. This ensures that the athlete trains to their relative ability and can be progressed in a safe
training environment.
As part of their tactical development, players will utilise Sportscode video analysis to review their
own performance while receiving feedback from a WRU position specific coach.
Technical development of the player will be initiated by a skill assessment on entry into the
programme. This will assist in the prioritising and planning of the skill development plan for the
individual.
Skill development through the duration of the programme will focus on the generic core skills, unit
skills and position specific skills of the player.
