Spring 2013 - Breakthrough Corporation
1805 Maryville Pike Knoxville, TN 37920 UPDATE Return Service Requested Spring 2013 Upcoming Events 2013 Golf Tournament Puzzle Pieces at Walgreen Stores Monday, September 23rd, 2013 will hopefully bring sunny skies and beautiful temperatures for Breakthrough’s golf tournament with the Autism Society of East Tennessee. The tournament will once again be held at Willow Creek Golf Club with an 8:30 a.m. and a 1:30 p.m. round. Included in the tournament is always a fabulous goody bag, a golf shirt, lunch, on course refreshments and a great time! For more information contact John Thomas (329-1230) or go to www.breakthroughknoxville.com for the complete brochure. For the first two weeks in June, all 40 Walgreens stores in the greater Knoxville area will be selling paper puzzle pieces to benefit Breakthrough. One hundred percent of your donation will go to Breakthrough. Please support Breakthrough by purchasing a puzzle piece and also show your support of Walgreens for being one of the leaders in employing individuals with disabilities!!! Three of Breakthrough’s clients have just completed Walgreens REDI (Retail Employees with Disabilities Initiative) program and another client has been employed at one of their stores for almost two years. Walgreens permits Breakthrough to bring clients into their stores for job training and assessments..they are an excellent employer!! Please buy your puzzle piece to help Breakthrough and give a “high five” to Walgreens at the same time! Remember, the first two weeks in June! The Wish List Fundraising Event Successes! Breakthrough’s Day, Supported Employment and Residential services are ALWAYS in need of items to assist with their programming. Do you have any of these items that you are not using or can you donate new ones? • A SmartBoard • All levels of books, with the exception of "board books" • Craft supplies: markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue, construction paper, googly eyes, pom-poms, elastic for making bracelets, beads, etc....really any kind of craft supply is appreciated. • Curtains • Cookie sheets • Towels • Paper cutter • Measuring cups • Sharpie markers • Ink Pens • Desk chairs • Household items, mostly small kitchen appliances. • Game fly and/or Netflix memberships • Community Sports Equipment • Second generation or above iPads (approximately 15) • Heavy duty dining room table and chairs (6) • Scanner/Printer • Laptop computer • Restaurant Gift cards We are so grateful for the support of our donors and friends who help us in so many ways. Please contact the office at 865-247-0065 or Beth Ritchie at 865-719-0534 or [email protected] if you can help. Thank you for your support!! Bunco for Breakthrough T he Seventh annual Bunco for Breakthrough was held Friday, January 18th, 2013. We moved back to the Greek Orthodox Church and a great evening was had by all who attended! There was once again plenty of food catered by Terri Savage, wine generously donated by Chris Moats of Triple C Distributing and a “better than ever” raffle board with gift cards from local shops, restaurants and markets! New players quickly overcame their fear that they “didn’t know how to play” Bunco after one round, and everyone made new friends as “losers” moved to the next table and “winners” maintained their seats for the another round! As always, the laughter and chatter increased as the wine in the bottles decreased! We truly appreciate the support of the following businesses that provided gift cards this year; JP Coffin, Gourmet’s Market, Neighborhood barre, The Nail Place, Papa John’s Pizza, Turkey Creek Target, Salon 1551, M.S. McClellan, Ye Olde Steak House, Salon de Trois, Blue Grotto Salon, Jets Pizza Farragut, Chili’s Mabry Hood, Bonefish Turkey Creek, and Sam’s Club West. Thank you ladies for your continued support of this fun event that has raised over $25,000 in its seven years to provide services for adults with autism!! Take Home the Cellar March 9th, 2013 marked the date of the third Take Home the Cellar. The event was held at a new location due to the closing of the Red Line Gallery. Natalie Swindell, the gallery’s owner, decided for personal reasons to close her gallery. Breakthrough owes her a great debt for her generosity in donating the use of the gallery for two years without which this event would never have become a reality! This year’s event included the same “bring two bottles, one is tasted and the other goes into the cellar for the winner to take home” venue however, we included a separate red and white flight. The move to the Greek Orthodox Church also” encouraged” Take Home the Cellar to expand, and we added a silent auction. Michael Capps, a local artist, provided jewelry handcrafted in silver, gold and copper with a portion of the proceeds donated to Breakthrough. In addition, the Pellissippi State Community College Hospitality Class assisted with the event as a service learning project with setup and food preparation. There were over 55 different wines to taste and a variety of specially prepared hor d ‘oeuvres to sample making the evening a unique way to raise funds for the clients we were introduced to on a video generously developed by RIVR Media. We were also fortunate to have Cushman and Wakefield Cornerstone return as a sponsor of the event in memory of Don Brewer, one of Breakthrough’s longtime supporters. Additional sponsors were Fraley & Schilling, Hart Graphics, Gina Tate and John Plummer, Jeanie and Edward Sims, Tammy and Knox Williams, Scott Roddy, Marilyn Householder and the Holiday Inn World’s Fair Park. At the end of the night, John Buchanan was the winner of the red cellar of 44 bottles of wine, and Kathy Hart was the winner of the white with over a dozen! All tips placed in the jars on the bar and half of the proceeds from the special appetizer of the night went to Breakthrough. Chief Seth Simmerman prepared a fabulous combination of pasta, garlic and shrimp which was a huge crowd pleaser! It was a successful few hours with tips of almost $1000. A special thanks to Mike McKenzie for a contribution through Morgan Stanley. Thanks to all who came out to support Beth and Bo….although there were no tricks similar to the ones in the movie Cocktail….they both held their own (but agreed they should keep their day jobs)! Please support our friends at Echo Bistro and Wine Bar. Blue skies and perfect temperatures greeted a record 516 runners and walkers for the seventh annual Run for Autism bright and early on April 13th, 2013. Lori Tucker from WATE-TV was once again our Honorary Race Chair and joined us to welcome all the participants as we gathered to raise funds to support our services. Many of our clients joined other Breakthrough Buddies, individuals with disabilities who wish to participate on any level they can in the run or walk, and were recognized for their efforts with a special ribbon and a handshake, pat on the back or a hug from County Mayor Tim Burchett. Our overall winners received our famous robotz as awards, created by John Ryan Lee, with first place winners receiving medals and second and third place awards of puzzle pieces, some crafted by our clients. Many runners took advantage of Turkey Creek’s Brixx Wood Fired Pizza’s fundraising event for Breakthrough on Thursday and Friday and “carbo loaded” in anticipation of race day! We are grateful for our major sponsors: UPS Farragut; The Haslam III Foundation; TIS; AkinsCrisp Public Strategies; Butler, Vine and Babbs PLLC; The Facial Room; Ray Fisher, Fisher Tire; and John Montgomery, Montgomery Cove Development. In addition, our runners and walkers would be hungry and thirsty without the generous support of Walgreens, Coke, Butler & Bailey Market, Best Bagels in Town and Deli, and Dunkin Donuts. We are also sincerely thankful for the assistance of Fleet Feet, PODS, Bayer Properties LLC, Regal Cinema Pinnacle Stadium 18 & IMAX, and Chick-fil-A. And of course, a big “high five” goes to our participants…the runners, the walkers, the teams, and those who slept in but still supported us…everyone who helped us raise over $10,000 in entry fees this year! Thank you for your understanding and support!!! prior to 2006.they Thisshould has been apologize for the Board of Directors: Chairman’s Corner Breakthrough’s Board of Directors and staff continues to strive to provide excellent services to all our service recipients. To help achieve that goal, the Board and two former members of the board held an all day strategic planning retreat on a Saturday in early March. The board is dedicated to the mission of Breakthrough as we had almost 100% participation. With two facilitators, Jeannie Dulaney and Kathy Hamilton, the board began the morning with an interesting introduction exercise to help each member learn more about one another. A timeline was established where each person attending the retreat shared when they became familiar or affiliated with Breakthrough and how. The morning session wrapped up with reviewing the “ah ha’s” and “Take Forwards/Leave Behinds” of the two exercises. After a quick lunch, the challenge to the group was to revisit the current vision and mission statements of Breakthrough. All participants recognized the extraordinary success of Breakthrough in its first 13 years. The questions to the Board now are: Where do we go from here? and How do we get there? We separated into small groups with each group reporting to the others what each saw for the future of Breakthrough. Common themes were determined and used as the backbone for updating Breakthrough’s vision statement. After participants were reassigned to new small groups, a new task was assigned to each group to work on the blueprint to achieve the vision asking: “How are we going to get there?” Each group considered structure, leadership, finances, projects and all things associated with “Improving the lives of adults with autism.” Once each group reported to the balance of the attendees, common objectives were established to achieve Breakthrough’s vision. The common objectives were then voted on to establish top priorities for Breakthrough’s future. Once those priorities were agreed to, various board committees were tasked with working out the details of how to implement those priorities. The board and committees are working through the tasks assigned from the retreat with enthusiasm and excitement as we move ahead with putting in place the steps to “promoting excellence, supporting families and providing services that enable adults with autism to lead purposeful lives.” Andrea White Chairman Andrea White Chairman John Lawrence Vice Chairman Chris Hockman Treasurer Lynn Bolton Nancy Carnes Fred Coe Kathie Dorran Denny Dukes Lance Fisher Kathy Hart Ron Koksal Terry Ray Lisa Ross Carole Schenk Breakthrough Staff: Tom Beeson Executive Director Jason Riddle Residential Director Executive Director’s Update A big thanks to everyone who made our winter and spring fundraising events so successful. We have some exciting things going on this summer at Breakthrough. Our Day Program is partnering with the University of Tennessee Gardens. Program participants have received basic instruction in horticulture, and those who are interested will be participating in ongoing training. Day Program participants are able to use their skills on a weekly basis as we are also volunteering at Beardsley Community Farm in Knoxville, and we will have a garden of our own again this year. Later this summer, we will start the second round of our in store training at Walgreens. Finally, this summer, we will begin Phase III of our neighborhood construction project. Our new construction will include a building with two, three bedroom apartments, sleep quarters for staff, and a large common area and kitchen for gatherings; a second building will have three efficiency apartments for individuals who need safe, affordable housing but do not require support services. Look for pictures of the new buildings in the next newsletter. Again thanks for your ongoing support for and interest in Breakthrough.
