The Catholic Community of Billerica consists of three parishes:
St. Andrew Parish, St. Mary Parish, and St. Theresa of Lisieux Parish
These parishes serve the needs of the community in many
different ways. We offer preparation for sacraments, religious education for children and adults, social activities,
assistance to those in difficulties, comfort to the sick and
to those who mourn a loss. If we can be of help to you in
any way please call us. You also may find more information about our parishes and activities on our web page

Why do Catholics Venerate Mary?
Catholics venerate (hold in a high degree of sanctity or holiness) Mary because she is the mother of God
and our mother. We see in the gospel of Luke “All generations will call me blessed”. When we pray to
Mary and honor her in a special way – such as the May crowning – we are led to love her and use her total
commitment to God and her faith in God’s work as an example. Her maternal function sends forth the
Lord’s love. Through Mary, we are drawn to her son Jesus. Mary’s role in salvation is to give her son to
humanity. Mary leads us to Him, shows us how to live in response to Him, and intercedes on our behalf.
Sometimes as Catholics we are criticized for worshipping Mary as though she were a God. Devotion honors
Mary, and we worship God. When we pray in Mary’s honor (the Hail Mary), we are thanking God for blessing us with
Mary.

Why do Catholics fast before Mass? The
rules for fasting have evolved over the
years. We fast before Mass in order to prepare a proper dwelling for Jesus when we
receive Him in the Eucharist. In the same
way we would prepare our home for visitors, we prepare ourselves for receiving Jesus in the Holy
Eucharist.
According to the Code of Canon Law we are required to
fast from everything except water and medicine for one
hour prior to receiving communion (Code of Canon Law
919).
When we force our body to do something hard, like not
eat or drink, it reminds us that hunger and thirst

Middle/High School Come and See Night
SHARE YOUR GIFTS WITH THE YOUTH OF THE
CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF BILLERICA
An informative explanation of how the middle and high
school religious education program will happen next year
will be held at St. Mary Church on Tuesday, June 16th,
at 7:00pm. Middle School Coordinator Tony Carbrello
and High School Coordinator Jim Spinale will be on hand
to offer a short presentation and answer questions.
There are many opportunities to
assist in Billerica Catholic Religious Education this coming
fall. We need your gifts! Please pray
about how you might be able to assist
in the formation of the youth of our
community. For more information,
please contact the Billerica Catholic
Religious Education Office at 978667-3730.
All rising 6-HS parents, as well as anyone considering volunteering in our programs next year, is welcome to attend. Please RSVP
We need Small Group Leaders. In our Middle and High
School program, Presenters present content and curriculum
for the session, while adult and teen Small Group Leaders lead discussion and activities with their group of students (10 or less). This is a great role for a parent or other
adult who wants to be a positive influence on our students,
but who doesn’t want to prepare or present a session.
Religious Education Registration
We invite you to stop by the Religious
Education Office located at 470R Boston Road to register your children for
the 2015/2016 Billerica Catholic Religious Education Program which will
resume in September.
Deb Fergus, the Coordinator for Grades 3,4, & 5, invites
you to volunteer as a Classroom Aide. Aides help the Catechist (lead teacher) in the classroom, especially during
hands-on and interactive activities. If you enjoy working
with this age-group, but do not wish to teach, this is a great
role for you!
Classes are being offered for children and youth entering
Grade 1 through High School at the three Billerica Catholic Parishes. A detailed program summary and Family
Registration
Forms
can
be
found
at
www.BillericaCatholic.org or at the Religious Education
Office.

Attention Kindergarten Parents!
Now is the time to register your child for Religious Education Classes.

Question/Comment from a teen:
My parents are crazy. They hate my friends, my music, and anything I’m involved in. I wish I
could trade them in for new ones.
~It’s all about perspective~
A : I used to have the same stressed relationship with my parents in high school. It all changed my senior year because I
changed my perspective. I finally learned the secret to success with parents- seeing life through their eyes!
Here is what you need to see:
Your parents are worried sick that you might meet up with the wrong crowd that could introduce you to all sorts of evil.
They don’t want their kid to be a pot-head, get pregnant, fail school, or die! They don’t want music to influence your attitude. They desperately want you to succeed in school and in life. They have seen the real world in all its ugliness and they
desperately want to protect you from it. Their highest goal for your life is that your character develops into a person that
will positively influence the world around you.
A little humility, respect and gratitude will transform your relationship at home. Try saying this: “Mom and Dad, I am
sorry for the way I have treated you both. I am ashamed of my disrespect. I commit to join you in this process of becoming the person that you and God want me to be. I love you.”
Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Colossians 3:20
