WWW.BILLERICACATHOLIC.ORG JUNE 14,2015 The Catholic Community of Billerica consists of three parishes: St. Andrew Parish, St. Mary Parish, and St. Theresa of Lisieux Parish These parishes serve the needs of the community in many different ways. We offer preparation for sacraments, religious education for children and adults, social activities, assistance to those in difficulties, comfort to the sick and to those who mourn a loss. If we can be of help to you in any way please call us. You also may find more information about our parishes and activities on our web page http://www.BillericaCatholic.org Why do Catholics Venerate Mary? Catholics venerate (hold in a high degree of sanctity or holiness) Mary because she is the mother of God and our mother. We see in the gospel of Luke “All generations will call me blessed”. When we pray to Mary and honor her in a special way – such as the May crowning – we are led to love her and use her total commitment to God and her faith in God’s work as an example. Her maternal function sends forth the Lord’s love. Through Mary, we are drawn to her son Jesus. Mary’s role in salvation is to give her son to humanity. Mary leads us to Him, shows us how to live in response to Him, and intercedes on our behalf. Sometimes as Catholics we are criticized for worshipping Mary as though she were a God. Devotion honors Mary, and we worship God. When we pray in Mary’s honor (the Hail Mary), we are thanking God for blessing us with Mary. The rules for fasting have evolved over the years. We fast before Mass in order to prepare a proper dwelling for Jesus when we receive Him in the Eucharist. In the same way we would prepare our home for visitors, we prepare ourselves for receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. According to the Code of Canon Law we are required to fast from everything except water and medicine for one hour prior to receiving communion (Code of Canon Law 919). When we force our body to do something hard, like not eat or drink, it reminds us that hunger and thirst WWW.BILLERICACATHOLIC.ORG JUNE 14,2015 CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF BILLERICA NEWS RCIA CATECHUMENATE — WELCOME ! They hate my friends, my music, and anything I’m involved in. I wish I could trade them in for new ones. ~It’s all about perspective~ A : I used to have the same stressed relationship with my parents in high school. It all changed my senior year because I changed my perspective. I finally learned the secret to success with parents- seeing life through their eyes! Here is what you need to see: Your parents are worried sick that you might meet up with the wrong crowd that could introduce you to all sorts of evil. They don’t want their kid to be a pot-head, get pregnant, fail school, or die! They don’t want music to influence your attitude. They desperately want you to succeed in school and in life. They have seen the real world in all its ugliness and they desperately want to protect you from it. Their highest goal for your life is that your character develops into a person that will positively influence the world around you. A little humility, respect and gratitude will transform your relationship at home. Try saying this: “Mom and Dad, I am sorry for the way I have treated you both. I am ashamed of my disrespect. I commit to join you in this process of becoming the person that you and God want me to be. I love you.” Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.
