Spotlight - Paws of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap
Welcome to Spotlight
On behalf of PAWS of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap, welcome to
our Spotlight on PAWS benefit dinner and auction. We honor our furry
friends with renewed commitment to nurture their lives, and we gather
with animal lovers who place a priority on embracing animals as an
integral part of our families.
Building on successful events from the past, this dinner is intended to
focus attention on a particular part of PAWS’ expanded mission – hence
the name, “Spotlight on PAWS.” In our 38th year we'll take a look back
at all we've accomplished, and highlight our success at building healthy
families through adoption of healthy pets. Our two sparkling new
facilities, in Kingston and on Bainbridge, significantly expand our
capacity to find loving homes for cats and dogs who often have nowhere
else to turn.
As you probably know, we added another element to our event last year,
the Community Hero Pet Awards, which we'll present following the
auction. You'll meet amazing animals (and their humans), who show
what's possible when people and their pets celebrate their magical bond
of companionship.
At a time when government budgets are stretched to the breaking point,
we’re proud to say that since 1975 we’ve served tens of thousands of
pets and their people, on Bainbridge Island and throughout North Kitsap,
without a cent of government support. We rely entirely on local
businesses, foundations, and mostly, on the generosity of animal lovers
like you. Please spread the word about our mission and our expansion to
your friends.
Thank you for joining us tonight at the beautifully restored Manor
House. Here’s to you and your animal friends, past, present and future.
With gratitude,
Mark Hufford
Executive Director

Thank you Spotlight Sponsors
Two of our Spotlight Presenting Sponsors (Jacobi Family Foundation,
and Pam and Pete Hendrick) graciously donated their catalog "space" to
help spread the word about our Kitsap Lost Pets program, which any pet
owner may need at one time or another.
In your auction packet is a refrigerator magnet to remind you of this
service when you need it most. Because when a pet is loose and roaming,
every minute counts.
Kitsap Lost Pets provides free online listings for lost and found pets
throughout Kitsap County. Listings, including pictures, are posted at
no charge, and are searchable by zip code. To post a picture, however,
you need to have a picture, so let this be a reminder to all of us to keep
close-up and full body pictures of our pets up to date.
PAWS initiated the KitsapLostPets.org website about two years ago,
and it's being used more and more. The site is now used by the Kitsap
Humane Society, as well as many of our veterinary partners, and has fast
become "the place to go" for lost and found pets in Kitsap County. Over
the course of a typical month, several hundred pets are listed, and dozens
of families are gratefully reunited with their furry companions.
Thanks go out to Dan Zimmerman and Dogfish Software for developing
the site and promoting its use. Please help spread the word!

PAWS of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap SUPER-Volunteers
The work that PAWS accomplishes in support of pets and their people on Bainbridge
and throughout North Kitsap would not be possible without the ongoing diligent
efforts of dozens upon dozens of volunteers too numerous to be listed here. Special
thanks go out to the adoption counselors who work tirelessly at our Cat Adoption
Centers; to the foster families who open up their homes to kittens and cats needing
short- and long-term shelter and care; to our event volunteers who plan, run, set up,
and cleanup for every PAWS event (including this one); and to all the veterinarians,
their staffs, and the pet-oriented business supporters on whom we rely so heavily for
discounts and services.
Auction Item Donors
We extend deep gratitude to all the amazing individuals and businesses who donated
items for tonight's auction.

2013 Spotlighted Pet
Meet Daisy!
Daisy came to us in Connecticut in 1997 when my daughter worked on a
Habitat for Humanity trip in W Virginia. Getting ready to come back, the
teens noticed a bucket of newborn kittens being cruelly kicked about.
Each teen picked up an unwanted kitten to protect and take home.
Courtney came back with the tiniest, (less than a pound) bruised, little
being. After a trip to our vet, we were told that because she was so small
and her insides were bruised, her chances of survival were low. We
decided to take her home and try and nurse her to health and find her a
good home. After many hours, days, and weeks of feeding her with a 3
inch doll bottle, cleaning, rubbing, and holding her, she not only lived,
she thrived! Needless to say, we had no intention of parting with her and
she became part of our family. Her favorite place was our big, sunny,
family room window, to sleep or watch the wildlife from. She was
always there.
Fast forward to 2003. I was diagnosed with cancer and had a long and
rigorous treatment plan ahead. Through the one year of various
treatments, many days all I could do was sit on the family room sofa and
just be. During this entire year, Daisy never left my side, not on sunny
days, not when birds flew by and not even when deer came up to the
window to peer in. She would only get up when I got up, and she did
this throughout my entire treatment. She and her brother Othello moved
with me to Bainbridge Island 6 years ago and she remained my constant
companion, under my desk on a stool when I worked, on a chair in the
kitchen when I cooked, and of course, next to me on her pillow at night
to sleep.
Last July at age15, Daisy died of cancer and I still miss her terribly and
will forever.
Want to see your pet on the catalog cover, the Spotlight on PAWS
poster, and all the other places you've seen Daisy? Raise your paddle

Golden Ticket Raffle
Don’t miss out on your chance to win any live auction item of your choice!
Purchase a Golden Raffle ticket for only $100 and you have the opportunity to
go home with your choice of any fabulous live auction item. Only 50 tickets are
available so don’t pass on this golden opportunity!
One lucky winner will be drawn at the start of the Live Auction and will
immediately select his or her choice of ANY Live Auction Item.
Cat Collar Wine Toss
Combine luck and skill at this game sponsored by Windermere Real Estate,
Bainbridge Island. Just $10 buys you three chances to win one bottle of wine.
Toss the studded cat collars and try to get them over the top of a bottle. Ring a
bottle of wine and it’s yours to take home. There are lots of great vintages in the
selection, but it’s up to your aim (or luck) to see which one you might get. $10
gets three chances to win. Once you win a bottle, it's the next tosser's turn.
The Great Tennis Ball Dive
This is a 50/50 raffle, with the winner to be drawn at WagFest, on September
15th, in a unique way. You do not need to be present to win, so buy a $10 chance
(or more) tonight and we'll contact you if you're the winner (or, better yet, come
to Battle Point Park and watch). Winner gets half of all proceeds. Your number
will be put on a tennis ball, which will be in a kiddie pool along with all the
other entries. A pal of PAWS dog will dive in, and come out with a ball in his
mouth. That's the winning number! Good luck -- buy as many balls as you care
to. Half the proceeds go to support PAWS community programs.
5th Bidder Raffle
Be the 5th bidder on any of the silent auction items and be entered into a special
drawing for a gift certificate to a Seattle restaurant valued at $150. You don’t
have to win the item, just be the bidder on the 5 th bid line.
Silent Auction will close at 6:50 p.m.

Dive!
Local artist Amos Edwards describes her approach to her art as a journey in
collaboration with the environment. Her process starts outdoors on canvas with
intention, pigment, the earth and weather, an organic beginning that saturates
each piece. The cloth is later stretched in the studio, layered and refined until a
depth, an essence and a rawness is revealed. It’s that depth that she paints. The
refined raw.

Meet the Need
Meeting the Need for Pets and their People
In 1975, three women with a spare Bainbridge Island garage had an idea. Why
not start up an organization dedicated to helping LOCAL pets and their families,
especially focusing on cats and dogs? They started quietly by addressing local
feral cats, helping friends looking for pets, and assisting pet owners who needed
some financial help caring for pets. Friends "across the bridge" got involved,
and the organization became "PAWS of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap."
Over 38 years literally thousands of people, mostly volunteers, have steered
PAWS through various stages of organizational evolution. Through good times
and bad, with your help, we've developed a reputation for unyielding
compassion and for an extraordinary level of commitment to the animals we
serve.
Over the years, PAWS community pet support programs (e.g., spay/neuter,
vaccines, and funds for veterinary care for pets of low-income neighbors) have
gained focus and become more structured. More programs (e.g., Pets and
Loving Seniors, PAWS pet food bank) have been added, and some programs
have come and gone.
Through it all, however, the "core" program of animal adoption has remained.
Over time, it too, has evolved. We sort of specialize in animals who have
nowhere else to turn. More than 40 percent of the cats adopted through PAWS
over the last two years have been animals who initially fell outside the
"healthy/adoptable" range as defined by most animal rescues and shelters.
Maybe they needed help with an ear infection, or required dental work. Some
needed foster homes to provide a little extra TLC to work through behavioral
issues. We often say "yes" when an animal's days are numbered, investing funds
and love, and we stay committed until we find even older animals a loving
home. Sometimes animals have to return to us and and we start all over again.
This is tremendously rewarding work. You've asked us to do more of it,
supporting our capacity expansion with two wonderful facilities, allowing us to
save more dogs as well as cats.
To remain "competitive" with other groups, the adoption fees we charge don't
nearly cover our expenses for the animals to whom we commit ourselves.
Tonight's "Meet the Need" will provide that adoption funding "cap" to allow us
to save and re-home hundreds of additional animals coming through our brand
new shelters.
Thank you!

Ethel the Gourmet
Release date: 1992. This is
1824/10179. Ethel is the
second in Wsyocki's cat series.
Named after Ethel Mertz from
"I Love Lucy" American
painter Charles Wysocki said:
"Ethel is nothing like Fred.
They have two distinctly
different personalities. Ethel is
a busybody. Ethel is the most
inquisitive cat I have ever met. You bring the groceries home, she's in the bag.
You bring home clothes, she's in the box. Ethel is a very nosy cat and is always
in trouble. That is why I have her in the kitchen. She's really having a lot of fun
getting into those cookies and jelly beans."
