PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Serving as President of the Manchester Historic Association since 2011 has been an interesting experience. I have had the opportunity to work with a wonderful Board of Trustees and a staff that work diligently to preserve Manchester’s history and to make it available to adults, children and scholars. Trying to stay true to the organization’s mission within our financial constraints continues to be a challenge. However, this year we have made progress towards financial stability. We have renegotiated the loan acquired during the renovation of the Research Center; moving it to Centrix Bank, a bank with a local focus and interest. We have moved our endowment to RBC Wealth Management and have the expectation of more personal management. Those are only partial steps toward ensuring the continued viability of our organization. Other steps must include grant writing on the part of staff and an increased involvement in fund raising by the Trustees. I am confident both staff and Trustees will rise to the task. This year the Manchester Historic Association continued to provide tours for school groups and for adults. Again, in the fall we provided the community with an opportunity to visit interesting landmarks during our Historic Architecture Tour. The evening at the Carpenter House was enjoyed by many. The recent Preservation Awards Dinner was very successful thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, staff and Trustees. If you were not present, you missed an evening made more fun than usual by Trustee Ed Brouder and Honorary Chair John Clayton. Jane Beaulieu provided great centerpieces that you could take home and eat!! You can’t do that at many events. Our Collections Committee under the guidance of Assistant Executive Director Jeff Barraclough, and Trustee Phil Pajakowski and with much help from Curatorial Assistant Sue DiBella-Olson has made great progress in organizing and caring for our collections. We have a new website up and running; thanks in large part to Trustee Tony Matos and his staff at Altos Marketing. I look forward to new Board leadership. Fresh, new ideas are necessary to keep organizations moving forward. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to serve as President and look forward to moving into the role of Past President. Judith K. Pence, President, Board of Trustees Page 1. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE I wish to thank every person, business and institution listed in this Annual Report. Each of you has contributed something of yourself to this organization. Our members are the foundation of the Manchester Historic Association, and our many donors and volunteers make it all happen. In the past several months we have lost several dear friends of our organization. I would like to write a few words about some of these people, who have meant so much to us. Trustee Emeritus Warren A. Bodwell passed away on March 17, 2013. He was born in Manchester in 1930, and earned a business management degree from the University of New Hampshire. He served in the US Army, and later joined his family’s insurance business, Lockwood, Bodwell & Covill where he worked until he retired. Mr. Bodwell was a member of the Manchester Historic Association for over 50 years, and served on the Board of Trustees in several positions, including as President in the 1960s. He and his late wife Ann were generous donors to the Association. They supported our organization in many ways, including contributing to the capital campaigns that created the Millyard Museum and that renovated our 1931 headquarters building at 129 Amherst Street. In recent years Mr. Bodwell lived in Alton, New Hampshire, and had served as president of the Alton Historical Society. Trustee Emeritus James A. Shanahan Jr. was a member of our organization for over 40 years. He was born in 1926 in Manchester and was a lifelong resident of the city. He died on February 27, 2013 at his winter home in Naples, Florida. He served in the army during World War II and was injured at the Battle of the Bulge. He graduated from Dartmouth College and Boston University School of Law, and was a Certified Public Accountant. He was the managing partner of the local Deloitte & Touche office for many years. He was also a community leader on many fronts, and was active in Democratic politics. He served on the board of the Manchester Historic Association from 1974 to 2002, and was President in the late 1980s. He and his late wife Judy were members and supporters of the Association, contributing each year to the annual appeal, and donating to the capital campaigns. I would also like to recall the lives of other members who passed away recently. These include the indomitable May Gruber, who was so admired by so many for her business acumen and energetic spirit. Mrs. Gruber extended many kindnesses to the Association over the years. Fred Kfoury, Jr. was a lover of history, a force for good in the community, and a devoted supporter of our organization. Osmond R. “O. R.” Cummings was also a long-time member and generous supporter. He wrote a wonderful book about Manchester’s trolley system that is an important resource for anyone interested in the colorful history of public transportation in our city. I offer a fond farewell to these individuals, and to the other departed members of the Manchester Historic Association. Aurore Eaton, Executive Director Page 2. COLLECTIONS REPORT Museums and other historical organizations have a responsibility to care for and preserve the historical items that the public has entrusted to them. The Manchester Historic Association is constantly working to ensure that our collections of historical objects, archives, photographs, and books are both well cared for and are made available so that others may learn to appreciate the city’s interesting and rich history. Through the efforts of staff and volunteers, we are continuing to make the collection more accessible to the public. One way this is being accomplished is through the online database, accessible through our website. There are currently over 9,000 records of items in the collection online, over 7,000 of which are from the Association’s photograph collection. We are continually adding to the material that is available for research. Several hundred photographs have been added to the database, including a collection of Straw School class photos, images of houses and other city buildings taken by the Manchester Housing Authority from the 1950s through 1970s, and class photos from the Notre Dame School of Nursing. A major undertaking has been to digitize our historic postcard collection. This includes over 800 Manchester scenes, from bird’s eye views of the city to views of city landmarks and streets, to images of Lake Massabesic and Pine Island Park. This online catalog is a great repository of images of Manchester’s history and I often hear from people who enjoy looking through the pictures. I encourage everyone to take a look! Another major project has been taking place at our off-site storage facility that houses our collection of historical objects. Suzanne DiBella-Olson has been working with us as Curatorial Assistant, a position funded through a grant from the Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation. Sue has been researching the history of each piece in the furniture and ceramics collections, rediscovering many interesting items and advancing our understanding of these objects that are important to Manchester’s history. We are also continuously adding to our collection. In recent months we have received many new items through the generous donations of our members and other supporters. These include log books that recorded water levels for the canal gate at the Amoskeag dam in the 1880s, letters written by a woman who served as a boarding house keeper in Manchester in the 1840s, and a sample book of cotton dress goods produced by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. Last year, the Association hosted photo scanning sessions as part of the New Hampshire Union Leader’s efforts to produce the book Manchester Memories. Thanks to the many people who brought in photographs to be either scanned or donated, the Historic Association has added many historical images of Manchester to its collection. The Association also received a generous donation from the Currier Museum of Art of photographs taken by local photographer Eric Sanford. These Manchester scenes were included in an exhibit of his work at the Millyard Museum last year. It is my hope that the Manchester Historic Association, through its collection and educational programs, will help people better understand and appreciate Manchester’s unique history. Jeffrey R. Barraclough, Assistant Executive Director Page 3. EDUCATION REPORT I am asked a lot of questions. Often it’s a question that brought a visitor to the Millyard Museum in the first place. They were curious about the brick buildings they pass each day on their way to work or maybe they grew up in Manchester or had family who worked in the mills. In my position as Museum Educator, I work with many different people, among them are students, educators, volunteers, and museum visitors. I get a lot of repeat questions but others are obscure and would take a great deal of research to answer. No matter what the question may be it is often the most memorable part of my interaction with someone. In the fall of 2011 the Manchester Historic Association received a grant from Amoskeag Industries, Inc., which allowed me to present in-class programs to Manchester public schools fourth-grade classes. The program, “Millyard Memories: The Story of the Amoskeag and Its Workers” was well-received. I was able to visit seven elementary schools and present to 480 students. My first visit was to Gossler Park Elementary School on Manchester’s West Side. It can be nerve-wracking to present a program for the first time but I was prepared with a PowerPoint and historical artifacts to help engage the students. I began the presentation and almost immediately, students’ hands were raised. They would ask good questions, including “What types of injuries were common in the mills?” and “What would happen if you couldn’t come to work?” I eventually had to request that questions wait until the end of the presentation to ensure we could finish on time. We are grateful to Amoskeag Industries, Inc. for making these in-class programs possible. Classrooms are not the only places where I get asked questions about Manchester’s history. Each year the Millyard Museum hosts school children from across the state. During the 2011-2012 school year the Millyard Museum saw about 1,000 students from 34 schools. A popular program we offer is the “Millyard Discovery” outdoor walking tour geared to students. The Amoskeag Millyard becomes the classroom. While we are discussing architecture we are surrounded by the beautiful brick buildings. When talking about waterpower, I can show the students the remaining granite walls of the original water power canals, and the Merrimack River where the all this water power used to run the mills originated. Being outside in the busy millyard can lend itself to some unexpected occurrences, and unexpected question. Students will ask about the features of a building or about the wildlife they observe along the Merrimack River. Through these walking tours students become aware that they are surrounded by history every day. The curiosity displayed by students, teachers, and museum visitors show that the Manchester Historic Association is important. The community looks to this organization as a place to learn and gain an understanding of the past. Sometimes I have the answers and sometimes I don’t, but the wonderful thing about the Association is that we have access to answers. Some of these can be found in the exhibits at the Millyard Museum, others in the collections at the Research Center. No matter what the question, I always appreciate it because it means that the person is engaged and interested in Manchester’s history. What more could I ask for? Jennifer Yakunovich, Museum Educator Page 4. Jennifer Yakunovich, Museum Educator with a fourth-grade class at the Green Acres School in Manchester in April 2013; her presentation was sponsored by Amoskeag Industries, Inc. Executive Director Aurore Eaton accepting a donation from Public Service of New Hampshire from the Association’s Past President Elizabeth LaRocca, PSNH Community Relations Manager in December 2012. Volunteers at the Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Cathedral show visitors archival photos from the Cathedral’s collection during the Historic Architecture of Manchester Tour in September 2012. TREASURER’S REPORT The Board of Trustees took several important steps in Fiscal Year 2012 to secure the long term financial health of the Manchester Historic Association. A refinancing of the Association’s debt was initiated which will reduce monthly payments and eliminate an interest rate swap agreement. The closing for the new loan agreement with our new banking partner, Centrix Bank occurred on April 4, 2013. We are also entering into an agreement with a new financial manager, RBC Wealth Management. In addition, the board began planning for a major fundraising campaign to support our mission and enhance activities at the Millyard Museum. This campaign will supplement the successful fundraising efforts the Association undertakes on a yearly basis, including the Historic Preservation Awards dinner and the annual appeal. It should be noted that both pulled in more revenue this fiscal year than last. With the rebound in the financial markets, the value of our investments has increased, up to $3.9 million at the end of Fiscal Year 2012. The MHA boasts significant assets, including the Research Center building on Amherst Street and endowment funds, which total $7.4 million. This is a city rich in history and culture, and the MHA’s financial strength will ensure Manchester’s story is told for generations to come. Christopher C.
