HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY RON DRAINE On the 5th of January 2016
SUNCOAST MODEL FLYERS INC. Official Newsletter January 2016 A SHORT VERSION Thank you to all the contributors that keep this newsletter going. e&oe Editorial……………. A bit of a struggle, but the new year has begun, and looks like it is off to a good start . All the best for 2016. The new building is well used and the large awning will prove to be an asset for club members, as well as future events . A quick note and because I can, I would like to wish a very good friend of mine, a very great 80th birthday and I do hope you had a great day even though it was pouring rain. HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY RON DRAINE On the 5th of January 2016 1 SUNCOAST MODEL FLYERS INC. THE PRESIDENTS REPORT The time just seems to fly by these days. Here we are with a brand new year upon us. Happy new Year everyone, I hope Santa was good to you. And you and your family all had a Merry and Happy Christmas and New year. Welcome to new club members and congratulations to those who have obtained new wingsratings. It is with a heavy heart that I mention that a club member Jeff Ward lost his battle with cancer and passed on he will be sadly missed. A lot has happened since the last Tailspin we have our new shed and viewing awning and have had a working bee. We finished off the ramp of crusher dust in the pits and planted some trees in the camping area. Looking great, thanks for all those involved Our last event for the year was in November. Jets over Coolum Jet Meet with people driving as far as Victoria to come to the event. And what a great event it was with over 50 planes attending and some very special flying and spectacular models. A big thank you from all helpers fantastic job. Also a special thank you must go to Glenn Kennedy and Darwie Britz for making the trophy’s for the weekend great job guys they were very well received. We cleared around two thousand dollars for the weekend (Burgers were a great hit). Thanks Woody and Ben. Great job guys much appreciated. We have had a couple of incidents Official Newsletter January 2016 where planes have crashed outside our no fly zone. One of these involving a plane crashing into a neighbour’s property and the neighbour asking us how we are going to reduce the risk of this happening again. We now have a new policy in place where if you crash a plane in a no fly Zone you will be automatically grounded. We have a newly formed incidents response team (Made up of a MAAA qualified heavy model inspector a MAAA qualified flight instructor both are not on the Management Committee but are SMF Club members also The club Safety officer and SMF President or in his or her absence the Vice President) that will investigate the incident and report to the Management committee and give a recommendation of how they consider we should respond to the club member involved in crashing the plane. It may be that the person resit their current wings test again or have their model checked by a MAAA qualified model inspector before it can be flown, or no action required. This response is targeted at insuring we help members fly safely, reduce our risk of incidents outside the no fly Zone and give our Neighbours confidence that we have policies in place to make them feel at ease and shows that we have a professional approach of dealing with issues. Now with all that ugly stuff out of Newest Wing Recipients Congratulations Steven Dunn – Fixed wing silver 2 David Lynch – Fixed wing bronze Hayden and Jeff Ward – fixed wing silver(accepted by Lyn Ward). way. Our Christmas party was a great Success with over eighty people attending. The new awning and kitchen was a great venue to hold the party. I hear that Santa put in an appearance, (Unfortunately I missed him ( Must have stepped out for a minute when he came). A big thank you to Ben and Woody for catering the event as usual a great job. This year will start off with a bang we have the Jets over Coolum weekend on the 16th and 17th of January and then our Australian Day camp over from the 22nd to 24th January so come along for a great weekend of flying and grab a Pie and Coke. Oh well back to the Shed to get the Rafael ready for jet weekend. Safe flying and remember to be nice . SMF President Tony Thornton LOCK THE GATE MATE ! This is a simple test to see if when you inadvertantly turn off your TX before the RX that the model wont start up and cause damage or injury. If the motor kept running there was probably an issue with your settings on the TX prior to binding. I trialled this on the receivers previously mentioned and they all shutdown the engine after the TX was switched off. The case is very similar for petrol models where branded receivers, that are normally used, have a host of fail safe functions that can be programmed during the binding process to ensure the aircraft systems operate in a safe manner upon loss of TX signal. IF IN DOUBT, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR EQUIPMENT! If none of this makes sense, after you have also read your equipment manuals, come and see me when you next see me at the field. I can then demonstrate using one of my models, these principles/procedures and how it can save a lot of heartache. SUNCOAST MODEL FLYERS INC.
