Science Open House: We all love the hands-on nature of science at Palm Valley! From the
SmartLab to robotics, egg drops off the top of the gym to forensic science in Biology class, our
students have fun participating in our science curriculum. Come play and learn with us!
On Sunday, January 31 from 1:00-4:00 pm, we will feature active science exploration all over
campus for Preschoolers through Upper Schoolers. This event is open to the public, so bring your
friends and neighbors as well!
News from the Upper School:
*Senior Spotlight: Suzannah Schmidt
Suzannah Schmidt has been a student at Palm Valley School since the 7th grade. She has dedicated her elective time to assisting Mrs. Van Vliet in the Kindergarten. She plans to attend Humboldt
State in the fall.
What do you appreciate the most in your friends?
Probably their acceptance. No matter what kind of
mood I'm in they always try to help me feel better…
usually by giving me cookies...
What is your desired occupation?
I want to be a teacher, or a therapist for a prison
rehabilitation program. Hopefully I will make it to the
Peace Corps, so that I can help people all around the
world. I'm not really sure what exactly I want to do
but my main goal is to make a difference in people's lives.
Who is your favorite heroine in history?
Josephine Baker. She adopted 12 kids of different
ethnicities and religions to make the point that
anyone is capable of loving anyone no matter the
differences. She also had a pet cheetah that walked on
a leash so yeah that's pretty rad.
Suzannah puts the final touches on her
customized Senior Parking Space.
For what fault have you most toleration?
When I go to someone’s house and they forget to ask if I'm hungry...
What is your favorite food and drink?
I like tacos and pasta. I'll even put pasta in my taco shells! I also mostly live on candy, fruit, and
brussel sprouts.
What is your idea of happiness? Misery?
My idea of happiness is eating a huge piece of red velvet cake and then taking a nap with my two
puppies. Misery would be a world without puppies.
Your favorite Palm Valley memory?
Slight background...last year I worked as a TA for the Kindergarten class. Anyways, my birthday
last year fell during the mid-term exam week. One day, a couple hours before my test, Ms. Graves
called me and said that my teacher needed to speak to the class about the exam. I got to school
Page 5
(760) 328-0861/www.pvs.org
early and none of my classmates were there
so I decided to study while I waited for them.
Unbeknownst to me, it was all a trick! All of
the sudden, Mrs. Van Vliet and the whole
Kindergarten class walked through the
courtyard doors with balloons and handmade cards! They sang Happy Birthday in
both English AND French, pretty impressive!
It was so thoughtful and sneaky I never saw
it coming. They thanked me for helping out
but really I consider myself the lucky one!

The Upper School continues to hum along
in the New Year. We have big events coming
up. Semester exams will be the last week in
January. All students should have received
the general exam schedule via email, and it
was printed in last week's Phoenix. They all
should have received their Study Guides
early this week as well. This can be a
stressful time of year, especially for ninth
graders who are taking exams for the first
time. Please encourage your student to
reach out to teachers and staff with any
questions or concerns. Our goal is for
students to be successful, and we are here
to guide them through this experience.
Senior Lunch: Thank you to Suzannah
Schmidt and family for hosting senior lunch
last week. Please be aware that there will be
NO SENIOR LUNCH during exam
week. Senior Lunch will return during the
week of Winterim.
Winterim: Winterim will be the week
of February 1-5. Winterim is not an optional program and students are expected to
be on campus each and every day. Catalog
and registration forms will go out via email
on Monday, January 18. First come, first
served, so encourage your student to watch
their school email for the opportunity to sign
up first!
Upper School Building Hours: A reminder
that the Upper School Building, including
the classrooms and student lounge, are
open from 7:30 am-4:30 pm. Students on
the Upper School campus will only have
Page 6
access to the courtyard after 4:30 pm.
Grad Night for Class of 2016: A reminder
that Grad Night is Saturday, May 14. Tickets
will go on sale soon.
Winter Formal: The Upper School will host
a Winter Formal "Frosted Masquerade"
on Saturday, February 27 in the Gymnasium. More details to follow.
Send your encouragement and well wishes
along with our school Poetry Out Loud winner freshman Jackson Dean. On Saturday,
January 23, Jackson Dean (and a dozen of
his closest family members, friends, and
teachers) will travel to the Barbara and Art
Culver Center of the Arts in Riverside for the
county-level competition of Poetry Out Loud.
Jackson will recite the poem he won with
here at school, "Ode" by Arthur
O'Shaugnessy, plus an additional poem,
"Candles" by Carl Dennis. The winner of the
county competition will travel to Sacramento
for the State Finals in late February. The National Endowment of the Arts and the Poetry
Foundation have partnered with U.S. state
arts agencies to support Poetry Out Loud, a
contest that encourages the nation's youth
to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. After successful pilot
programs in Washington, D.C., and Chicago,
Poetry Out Loud was launched in high
schools nationwide in the spring of 2006
and has grown to involve millions of students across the country. Palm Valley has
done well in this competition, sending two
students to the State Finals in recent years.
Good luck, Jackson. May the bard be with
you.
News from College Counseling: College
Spotlight: The University of Dayton is a Roman Catholic university. It is one of three
Marianist universities and the largest private

over 8,500 undergraduate students and over
80 degree programs. More than 150 patents
have been assigned to the University of Dayton, including the Domino’s Pizza hot bags.
Over 90% of the undergraduate students live
on campus, making it one of the most resi-

News from the Middle School: Middle
School students are busily working to complete class assignments in anticipation of
the end of Quarter 2 and Semester 1
on January 29. This is a perfect time for
parents to check in on our online grade
book system, MyBackpack, to see how their
children are doing thus far. Teachers are
communicating directly with parents when a
little more effort and attention is needed to
finish the term successfully. Teachers can
be emailed if parents have questions regarding the grade status of their child. Any questions related to logging in to MyBackpack
can be sent along to Mr. Sackett, our Technology Director, [email protected].
The 6th grade students are anxiously awaiting Thursday, January 21, when our 5th
grade students will join 6th grade for a
"Moving Up" day in Middle School. That afternoon from 3:15 to 4:00 pm, parents and
5th graders are invited to join Mrs. Ferguson in the MPR for a presentation on life in
Middle School followed by questions and answers. This is a terrific opportunity for both
students and parents to become familiar
with our Middle School in anticipation of
our new 6th grade class joining Middle
School next fall.
Looking ahead to January 29, the end of
(760) 328-0861/www.pvs.org
the term, the Middle School Leadership Council is planning a Pajama Day with an afternoon
movie in the MPR as our January Friday Fun activity. More news will come on this event next
week after our council meeting on Thursday at lunch in E4.
Communication is one of the key components of a Palm Valley education. Speaking before an
audience with confidence, command, and skill is a behavior we hope to instill in all of our students. Take the opportunity to give your child an experience that will help him/her grow in
speaking confidence, command and skill. Encourage your child to participate in the big event
that will happen on our campus on Saturday, February 6. We are hosting a valley-wide Middle
School Monologue Festival, inviting Middle School students, public and private to recite dramatic pieces and win trophies. So far we have only 15 students ambitious and brave enough to
take on the challenge of preparing a 1-3 minute memorized monologue. Convince your child of
the benefits of participation and register him/her in this event. For more information see the
flyer attached in this week’s Phoenix or call Mr. Sarkis at school or email him ([email protected]).
News from the Lower School:
*Our New Spotlight on Faculty: Desireé Palmer
Just talk to Desireé Palmer for a few minutes and you cannot help
but feel her excitement and enthusiasm. “The best thing about
teaching is being with the students, five days a week, building our
culture, and together, achieving things we never knew we could.”
Dez was born in Vacaville, California. She loves the outdoors, and
spent a lot of time hiking near wine country as she grew up. She
went to high school in Riverside, and spent her senior year living
with her best friend in Palmer, Alaska.
She attended the University of San Diego where she studied
English and Education. “The School of Leadership and Education
Sciences was full of compassionate and innovate teachers, which
I loved.” Dez has taken this experience and brought it to her own
Third Grade class. When you enter her classroom, you will see
collaboration and learning in a safe, nurturing environment.
“One of the highlights of the year so far is seeing the students
learn to resolve conflicts. An example was when the students disagreed over how to organize a
project. One student came up with a compromise and shared it with the others during the end
of the day Closing Circle routine. The conflict was resolved and each student was a part of the
solution.” Seeing her students grow academically and socially is quite rewarding.
Dez spends her time outside of school wrestling with her two dogs and three cats, reading nonfiction or sci-fi fantasy, and “thinking of ways to make the world a better place.” If she could live
anywhere in the world it would be on a farm with her family and friends, and there would be a
hoedown every weekend.
Welcome to the Palm Valley team, Desireé!

Annual Mathletic Rocket Launch. The buddy
classes get together weekly and this was a
special treat!
Volunteers are needed to help with the

Our Fourth Graders are busy building models of California Missions and conducting
experiments which will be on display during
the Science Open House on January 31.
Parent Association: All levels are welcome to
PVS's first ever COLOR RUN!!!! It is
on Saturday, January 30 at our beautiful
PVS campus. Registration has begun and is
only $25 if you pre-register at the LS, MS or

participants will receive a free pair of cool
sunglasses. Medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
Place as well as Best Costumes! There is also
prizes for the Most Spirited Team and 1st
Place Team to cross the finish line.
Our Fifth Graders spent the day on January
7 at the Tolerance Center. They had the privilege of listening to a speaker describe her
family’s experience during the Holocaust.
They participated in The Butterfly Project in
which students learned about a child victim
of the Holocaust and created a butterfly to
memorialize and honor them.
In our colder winter weather, please remember our uniform guidelines. ANY sweaters or
sweatshirts worn inside must have the Palm
Valley logo.
News from the Preschool: Thank you to
Wyatt Palmer for donating a book to our
school library in honor of his birthday. This
tradition has really added to our library
collection so we are very appreciative of his
thoughtfulness.
Thank you Rasa Pelz for again creating our
wonderful monthly newsletter. Be sure to
read it online.
