News from the Upper School:
*Spotlight on Faculty: Chris Griffin
I was born and raised in Glendale, California,
attended Hoover High School where, in my
junior year, I was an Exchange Student to
Malaysia. At UC Berkeley I majored in English
Literature. I intended to teach at the college
level, and completed my Ph.D. and oral
exams, earning an M.A. in English in the
process. I found, however, that my interests
had expanded beyond books, and I transferred
to UCLA to pursue studies in film.
I moved to New York City in 1975. After a
couple of years of subsistence living, supported
by work in restaurants, I finally landed a job
on a movie. I worked as a Production Assistant
for three years and earned membership in the
Directors Guild of America as an Assistant Director in 1980.
Over the next several decades I worked as Assistant Director on countless films, including Nighthawks (Sylvester Stallone), Tootsie (Dustin Hoffman), Splash (Ron Howard), After Hours (Martin Scorsese), Prizzi’s Honor (John Huston, Jack Nicholson),
Tough Guys (Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster), Burglar (Whoopi Goldberg), Dominic and
Eugene (Tom Hulce), Captain EO (Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Jackson), and more
TV movies than I care to mention.
I retired for health reasons in 1994 and moved to the desert in 1996. Over the next
ten years I enjoyed several different career incarnations. I wrote freelance for The Desert Sun; lectured on Wagner’s epic operatic masterpiece The Ring of the Niebelungen
at Arizona Opera’s Ring Festival; wrote and edited The Living Desert’s publication
Foxpaws.
In 2002 my life changed forever when I met Ken Sarkis. We immediately discovered
that we shared a ridiculous sense of mischief and humor. Learning of my interest
(dating back to my college days) in literature, Mr. Sarkis invited me to volunteer as a
tutor for some of his Middle School students and give “guest presentations” to his
classes. Then one day he asked if I’d like to collaborate on a Middle School play. His
remarkable idea was to concoct a musical version of Homer’s Odyssey. My life-long
passion for musical theatre kicked into overdrive, and before long we were putting
together a show that became known as Home Sweet Homer (yes, the same show that
will be revived this year).
That was the first of nine shows Mr. Sarkis and I did together. I found that working
with kids was overwhelmingly gratifying and rewarding. I went back to Hollywood

sporadically, and produced the last
three seasons of the TV show Nip/Tuck.
But I’d caught the PVS bug. When an
opportunity arose to sign on here as a
teacher of English, I jumped at the
chance – a golden chance to return full
circle to my passion for great writing
and teaching that I had abandoned
nearly four decades earlier for the
“glamour” of show biz.
I love my days introducing terrific works
of literature to young people. There is
incomparable joy in watching a young
mind discover the pleasures of Shakespeare, the humanity of Steinbeck, the
sardonic ironies of Oscar Wilde, the
dark contradictions of Dostoevsky, the
profound beauty of the written word. I
breathe this stuff. That’s why I’m here.

February 8 begins our new semester.
Elective course catalogs have been sent
to students via email. Sign-ups will open
by Google form Sunday evening. Students who have general questions about
scheduling may email or meet with Ms.
Steinman or Ms. Pieper. Questions
about specific courses should be addressed to instructors.
As the new semester starts, please remember that any absence that is not: 1)
accompanied by a doctor's note, 2) a religious holiday or 3) a college visit, is
considered unexcused. After five unexcused absences, a student may receive
consequences including detention or
suspension. Please see Ms. Steinman if
you have any questions.
Students who are found to be out of
uniform will be made to change into the
proper uniform. If there is not a uniform
piece available for a student to borrow
from the office, a parent will be called to
bring the proper uniform.

Join us for the PVS Finals of the English Speaking Union's Shakespeare
Monologue Competition on Tuesday,
February 9, 1:50-3:20 pm in the MPR.
Parents are welcome. Upper School students have been preparing and performing Shakespeare monologues for the
past two weeks. On February 9, the
winners of classroom competitions
meet. The sophomore finalists are Pablo
Drenning, Carter Lawton, Joe Bolek,
and Christian Sadler. The finalists out
of Ms. Permar's European Literature
class are Gaige Griffin, Jacob Langlois,
Jasper Yan, and Atha KaufeldtBoardman. Mr. Griffin's and Ms. Clark's
classes have yet to announce. Out of
our host of finalists, two students will
advance to the valley-wide ESU competition to be held on March 4 at Shadow
Hills High School. The valley-wide winner goes on to New York City to perform
at the Lincoln Center (Jake Phillips ’14
was our most recent NYC finalist back
in 2014).
The California Scholarship Federation
and the College Counseling office have
organized a trip to UCLA! We will tour
the campus, the Engineering Program,
the Student Union. We'll eat what college students eat; we'll hobnob with
PVS alumni. Then, we'll go to Pauley
Pavilion for the UCLA vs. Oregon game!
We have a bus. We'll leave campus
about 11 am and return after the game
(arriving back about 10:00 pm). The trip
is on Wednesday, March 2. It is open to
CSF members and friends of CSF. $$$

News from College Counseling: 3rd
annual Los Angeles Student Athlete
Symposium (LASA): The event is for
high school student-athletes male/
female in grades 9-12 on March 12 on
the USC campus. The workshops will
cover a variety of topics such as: academic strategies, college recruiting,
SAT/ACT prep, etc. The cost of the
event will be $45 per student-athlete
and lunch will be provided. In addition
to the variety of workshops participants
choose from throughout the day, there
will also be a panel discussion of former collegiate student-athletes talking
about their personal experiences as a
collegiate student-athlete. To register,

News from the Middle School: A big
thank you goes to our Middle and Upper School Science teachers, Mrs. Hall,
Mr. Buck, and Mrs. Sackett, for their
effort and hard work in preparing for
our Science Open House this past
week. In addition, thank you to Mathletics and Robotics teachers, Mr. Sackett and Mrs. Farley, for sharing the fun
activities and hands-on learning from
their Middle School elective courses.
Current families and students were
joined by visiting families and students
in all sorts of engaging activities here in
the Middle School and the Science
buildings. Learning can certainly be fun
and the Open House activities proved
that to all who enjoyed the activities.
The Middle School Leadership Council
is working on plans for our February Friday Fun activity. On February
26, we will have a theme day: dress as
your favorite fictional character and we
will celebrate with prizes for the cleverest characters and Ben and Jerry's ice

staff.
This past week our official winter sports
season got underway. Team schedules
are available from coaches and on the
School’s website. Our athletes have
been practicing for many weeks and
they are very excited to get the league
games underway. Join us for games
both here in our gym and at competing
schools. The students really play hard
and they love a cheering crowd.
After School study hall continues in
this new semester from 3:30-4:30
pm Mondays through Thursdays. Room
assignments are posted in the hallways
on the Middle School building. If students are not in sports practice or
picked up by 3:30 pm, they are expected to report to study hall until their
rides arrive for pick up.
A congratulations is in order for 7th
grader Chase Carroll, who has been
chosen to be a part of Open Call at the
McCallum Theater on April 14-16. He
will be performing a solo accompanied
by a pianist. Way to go!
News from the Lower School: Community service was a focus this week.
Ms. Pieper led an Upper School Winterim class and they participated in Operation Gratitude. This is an opportunity
to write to First Responders, Wounded
Warriors, and new recruits, our deployed troops and thank them for their
service. Several grades joined in and
wrote their letters and made cards in
Technology class.
Third graders are gearing up for their
Pajama/Used Book drive, which starts
next week. Please send in new pajamas, (ages 18 months to 18 years), and a
gently used book. These will benefit
children in our own Coachella Valley.
All classes will be filmed on Wednesday, February 10, reciting the Pledge of
Allegiance for KMIR TV. Palm Valley
has been invited to participate in the
stations new feature. Videos of the
classes will be shown between the 5:00
and 6:00 am news broadcasts throughout the remainder of the year. (Parents
will be informed as to when their class
will be on TV). Please remember to
send your student in dress uniform
that Wednesday.
California History came alive Friday
when the Fourth Grade presented their
California Missions and Wax Museum.
The students have been working hard
this quarter in Social Studies, and this
was the culminating activity in their
study of this time in our state’s history.

News from the Preschool: Our Jungle
Cruise was amazing. The children enjoyed each activity. When they weren't
boating down the lazy river, observing
wild animals, or creating wonderful
drum beats, the children had time to
cool off and rest in the jungle huts.
Preparing the soil and replanting our
garden is our February science focus.
We are amending the soil, selecting
seeds, and even planting strawberry
starts. We enjoy this beautiful and
peaceful place in our playground.
There is something to do there every
day.
Thank you again for the donation of
water bottles. We have collected over
$180.00 so far. You don't have to be in
Preschool to donate empty water bottles. The Wys family from Kindergarten

drop bottles off regularly. They just
drop the bags off behind Mrs. Leany’s
parked car. Even Mrs. Rice sends down
a bag of bottles each week. We would
like to match last year’s goal of making
enough money from recycling to donate
$400.00 to Martha's Village and Kitchen.
Girl Scouts: Cookie lovers, it’s your favorite time of the year! Our Girl Scouts
are selling their cookies for $5.00 a box.

We are so excited to join the entire
school for PJ day on February 12.
All of the Preschool and Pre-K classes
are included in the School’s yearbook.
The final day to purchase the yearbook
at the presale price is February 26.
After that it goes up $5.00.
Sports News: On Wednesday, February
10, Ms. Suzanne Peet, our new Head
Coach for Softball, will be holding a
meeting in room US-6 at lunchtime for
any girls interested in playing this season. On Friday, February 12, Mr. John
Morris, our new Head Coach for Golf,
will be holding a meeting in room US-6
at lunchtime for any students interesting in playing this spring.
Parent Association: Thank you to our
entire Palm Valley community who attended the first ever Color Run. Karla
Jacome and Coach Al made this day a
huge success. Thank you also to our
devoted parents who were there at 6
am until the very end of the day to help
with set up and clean up. We could not
have asked for better weather.
Our next Parent Association Meeting
will be held next Wednesday, February
10 at 8:15 am in the Lower School. We
have some exciting updates on events
that will be happening in March. Please
come and show the WASC accreditation
team what an amazing group of parents
we have at Palm Valley School. Coffee
and breakfast will be served.
