Our future is in good hands On behalf of the organisers, I am delighted to welcome you to this year’s Ayr Flower Show and am sure that you will enjoy being with us in the lovely parkland setting of Rozelle for our 56th Show. This year’s event is much more inclusive than when it started in 1960 and is now a great family day out, complete with entertainment, music, food, cookery demonstrations and a craft fair. In short, it offers something for everyone but flowers and plants will always remain at its heart and be the reason behind everything else that happens to make this such a popular event. Yet we cannot rest on our laurels and planning for the future is crucial to any business or event. Ayr Flower Show is keenly aware of that, which is why it places so much emphasis on young people who, as in everything, are our future. Sponsorship support from Ayr Guildry, Ayrshirehousing and Directional Letting encourages young people to become involved through individual entries in a range of Classes encompassing not only planting and growing but also in landscape design and planning. Add to that level of collective interest the simple fact that close on 900 different individual entries have been received in the Junior Section and you begin to understand the importance of these “gardeners of tomorrow” to keeping their Ayr Flower Show alive. Enjoy being with us and thank you for your support. John Walker Chair, Ayr Flower Show 2 Friday 5 August Variety and The Gaiety are the spice of life at Rozelle... Ayr’s historic Gaiety Theatre has played a significant role in the town’s history, famed for its variety since opening its doors in 1902. In the recent past, a tie-up between The Gaiety and Ayr Flower Show has been very effective and is being repeated this year with an even more impressive array and variety of music. Starting with the lively sound of the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra, the programme continues throughout the Show and ends with the award-winning Dunaskin Doon Brass Band on Sunday afternoon. In between, the Entertainment Stage features many local artistes such as Ayr’s glamorous songstress Nicola Cassells, Ayr Pipe Band, the ever-popular Dixieland Rhythm Kings, Tommy Campbell, Celtic Twist and Burness, along with several local choirs. Clearly the 56th Ayr Flower Show isn’t simply about bonny blooms and fabulous flowers but is now a family fun event with the Entertainment Stage literally at the centre of it all. The successful partnership with The Gaiety ensures quality entertainment is on hand to take the magic of Ayr’s own theatre-land into the great outdoors at Rozelle Park. www.ayrflowershow.org 10:00 11:00 11:45 12:30 14:00 15:00 15:45 Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra Gaiety Voices Nicola Cassells Celtic Twist Connor & Adam Gaiety Voices Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra Saturday 6 August 10:00 Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra 11:00Burness 11:40 Ayrshire Infinity Choir 12:20 Tommy Campbell 13:15 Dixieland Rhythm Kings 14:45Efemmeras 15:30 Dalmellington Junior Brass Band Sunday 7 August 12:00 12:40 13:30 14:10 15:00 15:50 Ayr Pipe Band Nick McCann Ayr Pipe Band Tommy Campbell Ayrshire Infinity Choir Dunaskin Doon Brass Band The Directors of Ayr Flower Show wish to thank and acknowledge the Management Team at The Gaiety Theatre for their partnership support in arranging this year’s exciting programme at Rozelle. The marquees and stands erected in Rozelle Estate over the first weekend in August undoubtedly house one of Ayr’s top visitor and local community attractions. Flowers, fruit and vegetables remain very much at the core of the Show but such is the range of attractions and activities on offer at the three-day event that even the non-gardening community will find something of interest. The sheer scale of today’s event is a far cry from those early days when it was established back in 1960 by Bob Wakefield in Dam Park Stadium and could then be contained in what Adam Train, who has exhibited each year since its inception, describes as “two old tents that were about 30 feet wide and 100 feet long”. That first event quite literally sowed the seeds from which today’s Show has grown in size, status and reputation. While the quantity of plants on view may have dropped slightly, largely because many local authorities no www.ayrflowershow.org longer have Parks Departments and civic floral displays, there is no doubt that the overall quality remains, with the standard of exhibits in all of the hundreds of classes clearly of the highest calibre. This year’s Show features some of the highlights of the competitive horticultural year in Scotland, including the Scottish Begonia Society Show with which Ayr is now almost synonymous, as well as the Scottish Pansy and Viola Association Show, the Scottish Pelargonium Championship and the West of Scotland Delphinium Championship. With such a level of competitions, it’s hardly surprising that Holiday Lettings, an associated company of Trip Advisor, the online travel website, has included Ayr in its “10 Fantastic Flower Shows in 2016 to Rival Chelsea”. Praise indeed from one of the market leaders in the international travel market with Ayr being GROWING OVER THE YEARS ranked sixth and with the comment that “It’s just as well this festival is on for three days as one day might not be enough”. Interestingly, the Holiday Lettings/ Trip Advisor website recognises in its introduction, that “there’s so much happening at these floral festivals that you don’t need to be into gardening to have a great day out. From cookery demonstrations to show jumping to unusually-shaped vegetables, these ten flower shows are blossoming with fun and entertainment for all the family.” That’s certainly true of Ayr Flower Show where the range of attractions includes a very lively entertainment programme which is being stage-managed once again by the production team from Ayr’s famous Gaiety Theatre. There are activities for young and old alike, including the largest Junior Competition Marquee at any Scottish Flower Show and a Seafood and Wine Bar within the Food Court being promoted by local companies J Pieroni & Sons Ltd and the Bijou Wine Company. A lot has changed since the first Show but the same spirit remains and because of that, demand for the Show continues to grow. For it involves an exciting partnership with The Cook School Scotland and the Flower Show, both of which are focused totally on providing quality experiences for visitors. Building on their successful appearances at major outdoor events, the Kilmarnock-based company will be demonstrating their chefs’ skills each day at hourly intervals from 11 a.m. until the final demonstration starting at 3 pm, in the Cook School Kitchen, a special marquee linked to the Food Colonnade. Thanks to the popularity of food-related television programmes, general interest in cooking continues to rise, creating queues for each session over the three days of the Flower Show. Visitors to The Cook School at Rozelle can learn about cooking in an entertaining and informative way from experienced chefs willing to share trade tricks and techniques. And for those who become hooked on The Cook School’s “taster” at the Flower Show, there will be opportunities to learn more about the variety of hands-on cookery www.ayrflowershow.org classes designed to suit individuals, couples and groups (including kids). The Cook School’s classes are themed to cater for all tastes, with topics as diverse as Scottish Fish & Seafood, Friends for Dinner, Curry, Simply Meat and Home Baking days to name just a few. Food is fun and nobody does it better than Cook School Scotland. Visit them at Ayr Flower Show. Wealth & Investment. Pick of the bunch Proud sponsors of the Ayr Flower Show. Sara Gray’s Jams and Marmalades started life being made in the family kitchen in Angus, near Arbroath, in small batches using locally sourced ingredients. Much closer to home, Woody’s Ice Cream, from nearby Galston, offers a wide range of fine luxury dairy ice cream, sorbets, frozen yoghurts and desserts made fresh from their dairy (from their award-winning herd of Ayrshire Cattle). From Auchtermuchty - where The Proclaimers also originated - The Seriously Good Venison Company carries on a longestablished tradition of their predecessors from the same airt. Diversity is clearly in the air in those parts because they also produce Seriously Good Black Pudding which is certainly worth tasting. “The Land of Cakes and Ales”, the foodie’s soubriquet for Scotland, is well represented with Chrystal’s Scottish Shortbread offering hand-made, hand-cut and hand-packaged www.ayrflowershow.org shortbread cubes, all made to a family recipe and which have gained numerous dedicated fans from far beyond their West Dunbartonshire bakery. Ales may be harder to spot but there’s no shortage of wines and spirits with Pieroth Ltd from Stirling occupying the first berth and the Leith Liqueur Company occupying the second. The latter company, which is based near Cockenzie in East Lothian, has created a uniquely Scottish product that fits the bill for a Show in which fruit has a star billing. For their pink-coloured liqueur - Fraiser - blends the flavours of premium Scotch whisky with wild strawberries, but be careful because it slips down very easily and is also a great base for cocktails. Fresh from the sea and washed down properly Scotland and seafood are synonymous and the quality of shellfish, including langoustines, oysters, mussels and prawns harvested from along our coast is second to none. In fact, many of the seafood delicacies that people are accustomed to eating on holiday in France, Italy and Spain don’t come from the Mediterranean at all but are imported from Scotland. At last year’s Flower Show, The Bijou Wine Co and J Pieroni & Sons, the longestablished Ayr-based fish merchants, co-hosted a stand where visitors were invited to sample seafood dishes matched to wines, with the opportunity to purchase the seafood and wines to take home. Unfortunately, space on what became a very popular site was restricted but visitors did suggest that they would have welcomed a lighter lunch of this nature as part of their day out. People were certainly listening, especially among the suppliers, and a lot of people are excited by the news that, for this year’s event, The Bijou Wine Co and J Pieroni & Sons will again collaborate to present a Seafood & Wine Bar as part of the Show’s www.ayrflowershow.org on-site catering. The menu will offer a selection of light seafood dishes freshly prepared on-site and accompanied by specially selected wines chosen to match the seafood dish. Dishes will include freshly shucked Oysters, Scallops in the shell with Chilli Butter, Prawn Marie Rose Baguette, Pieroni’s Smoked Salmon Open Sandwich with Horseradish, a Seafood Burger along with a selection of Hot and Cold Smoked Salmon. Wines, suitably chilled of course, will include a selection of white whites such as Prosecco, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay along with a Provencal Rosé and a selection of lighter red wines such as Pinot Noir and Sangiovese. Hopefully the arrival - and success - of a Seafood and Wine Bar at this year’s Show starts a trend that will see other local food providers getting involved. For a start, there’s almost 100,000 square feet of covered space under canvas that has been specially erected and fitted out to allow visitors to wander around the site in comfort without having to worry about the weather. There’s also lots of exhibits to be arranged and shown to their best advantage within the different marquees; there are hundreds of cars coming and going over the three days with car parks that need to be managed; and there’s an army of people buzzing around making sure that the site is clean and tidy. Add to that caterers, retailers, artistes and entertainers, all with different requirements and the complexity behind staging an event of this size soon becomes evident. None of this just materialises. It takes a massive amount of planning, backed up by effort and energy before, during and afterwards from hundreds of volunteers who work away quietly, often behind the scenes and seldom visible. They are the unsung heroes of Rozelle without whom www.ayrflowershow.org there would be no Flower Show at all. Add to their efforts, the valuable funding support that comes from sponsors, exhibitors, concessionaries, advertisers and patrons and it becomes clear that this is a massive operation that is not only an enjoyable and colourful event but also generates a substantial amount of money for the local economy. “People work tirelessly throughout the year as unpaid volunteers to make Ayr Flower Show the success that it is”, said John Walker, the Show’s Chair, “But funding is always tight, especially when we are in an economic climate that stretches our viability. We rely on the support from sponsors and patrons to ensure that the high standards already set for Ayr Flower Show are never allowed to drop”. For many people, Ayr Flower Show continues to be a very visible labour of love.
