So she asked if I would be interested, I said ok then. Yvonne thinks I look like Benny from the Cartoon Top cat but I think I am more of a George Clooney myself. So on Wednesday the 16th of April she packed the car and took me to London. We arrived at the hotel, I thought a quick wash and brush up and out to see the bright lights of London. Maybe see Madge at buck house or the big cats in Trafalgar square but Yvonne said no, we had to have an early night that's what she thought. I talked to her all night. In the morning we went to the location of the shoot, there were another two Maus Rambo and Charlie, belonging to Michelle Codd and Janet Williams, who are also members of the Egyptian Mau Club.We started at nine, did some walking about for the photographer, had lunch then more photos. We finished at six then my assistant Yvonne drove home, while I slept stretched out on the back seat after a very long day. The photographer and client were very happy with us three fellows so it was a very productive day Kittens got talent Not to be out done Deborah Reed Taylors little Mau kitten is doing his version of Thriller. Its a Yes from me SPOT PRESS! THE EGYPTIAN MAU CLUB NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 2014 | Issue 2 - ©EGYPTIAN MAU CLUB I don’t know how she does it Dancing with Diversity Becks Jeffries In January, I entered a competition via Sky to win the chance to dance with Diversity. My luck when it comes to competitions is generally awful so I didn't expect a thing to happen. So naturally, when the email dropped into my inbox that I had won I didn't know what to say, fantastic 23rd birthday present, that's for sure! After a ten hour bus journey, I arrived at London Victoria. I had to find the tube station which wasn't far away and then work out which way to go. Obviously, because my Uncle Calum had advised me which lines to take and stops to get off at, the plans had to be shattered. 'Planned Engineering works'! Seven, yes SEVEN different tubes later and I had arrived at the 02. Around two hours early but I needed the time to get my nerves under control. Finally 11:30 rolled around and we were starting to filter into the sky studios. I needn't have been nervous or at all worried. They've seen it all before - I danced when I was younger so I still have a vague idea about timing and counts. We warmed up and then quickly got into the routine. We spent around an hour and a half all in learning the routine, including splitting up briefly to work with our mentors. My group worked with Ike and Warren who were great and really encouraging. I have to say, they put me so much at ease that when it came to actually performing to the few hundred people who turned out to see the boys, I wasn't nervous. It was probably the best experience of my life, dancing WITH diversity, right there, honestly it is something I never thought I would ever have a chance to do. Afterwards we had a brief chance to get some photos. I got my photo with Sam (who is my favourite and who my stud boy is named after haha!) but I do love them all. He was so lovely to me and everyone else, they all were. It is incredible to have idols who are so down to earth and treat everyone so well. So yes, the journey was epic, but for these guys it was worth it, I have been a fan since the beginning and always will be, thank you Diversity for an amazing day! 3 The Privilege of owning a star, a Stargazer that is! By Lizzie Edge Continued from last newsletter I had to pinch myself numerous times that he was my cat, I never dreamed of such success after the discussions about how nervous he was. I think one of the most exciting successes was wining best in show at the Egyptian Mau show in 2011. It was the first time that Gazer was up again a good number of Maus, 9 Silver adults in fact and yet again he won best of breed and then on to Best Adult and Overall Best in Show, I was bouncing with joy! We have to watch Gazer's weight as with any Mau he LOVES his food! This has been commented on especially in the first year of showing him. I soon figured out why my strict rationing was not working. He had outsmarted the dry food dispenser that was programmed to give his 3 small meals a day. He was merrily sticking his paw up the chute and helping himself! That was soon remedied and he was put onto light food to shift the weight, we SPOT PRESS! THE EGYPTIAN MAU CLUB NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 2014 | Issue 2 - ©EGYPTIAN MAU CLUB now have him on a raw diet that seems to suit him best. During his quest for the Imperial title Gazer made a dream of mine come true, he won overall best in show at the Wessex Cat Club in 2012, there are moments with showing that you never forget and that is one of them, together with the Kentish Show last year when he repeated this feat. Gazer is such a wonderful cat at home too – its not all about showing. He will walk on a lead, so in the summer of 2012 we took him on holiday, camping in Ireland. We bought him a cat tent and a long lead and he was such a star, Walking around the historic ruins as if he was a dog, in fact he was better behaved than the dog! Having gained the Imperial Title it seemed only natural to give the Olympian Classes a shot. After all leaving Gazer at home would not seem right, he so loves his day out, charming the public, or his public as I am sure he sees it! It took him just under 6 months to achieve Olympian Bronze, the first Egyptian Mau to achieve this prestigious title and at the time he was the youngest cat to have done so. I was so thrilled, I had travelled significantly to give him the opportunity to gain certificates, going to Manchester & Queensferry with overnight stays for both of us, but it had been worth it. It was lovely though that he achieved this award at the Mau show in 2012, which seemed very fitting indeed. 4 We thought that we would also try Gazer at TICA as he had relaxed so much so we made the show year 2012/2013 the year to campaign him. This truly paid off and he gained many fans showing off in the ring and gained the TICA title of Supreme Grand Champion, with his points for the year he finished as 13th best short hair cat in the Western Europe Region also gaining him the title of Regional Winner. This meant that we did miss some GCCF shows so it was exactly a year before Gazer clocked up another 5 Olympian Certificates – again the fifth at the Mau show. Making him the only Egyptian Mau to be a Silver Olympian to date. the Supreme and then being runner up to the Supreme Kitten. It was particularly poinient after his mum, the gorgeous Mauology Dotty Diamond, died in an awful accident when he and his litter mates were only 2 weeks old. All three of this litter are now on the show bench thanks to their wonderful owners and I feel honoured that people would want to show cats that we bred. 2013 was the year where we would have some stunning kittens, and what I find wonderful is how Gazer's temperament as well as type is passed to his offspring. We have had some amazing comments back from judges over these kittens as well as super show results, including four Best of Variety Kitten wins. Rosemary Fisher commented “I was really spoilt for choice with these three lovely Mau kittens, all sired by the same stud from three different queens, congratulations to their breeder on such great consistency.” With everything that Gazer has achieved I am eternally grateful to Constance for entrusting him to us. His influence on our breeding plan, and my life, is immense. I believe that he has also considerably raised the profile of the breed as a whole in the UK. I couldn't sleep after reading this on her judges report, I was on cloud 9! Its one thing having a wonderful boy, but replicating it is a whole other story. However, his son, Tarjjika Athos gave me I think my proudest moment since I started breeding by winning Best of Variety Foreign Kitten at Gazer's show journey is by no means over, he currently needs one more certificate to obtain the title of Olympian Gold Imperial Grand Champion, and what a day that will be when he eventually gets it. All I can say is THANK YOU GAZER! Since this article was written Gazer has attained Olympian Gold Status SPOT PRESS! If you’ve met me, you wouldn’t expect me to be a ‘biker chick’. I’m not, really, but on occasion I ride pillion on my husband’s Triumph motorbike. My husband Rodney is a born again motor biking fanatic (provided the bike is a Triumph). Since 2007 he has resurrected the hobby of his youth and has been doing his best to make this a joint interest. To some extent he has been successful! I have bought all the requisite kit (and there’s lots of it) and have hopped (or heaved myself) onto the pillion seat a number of times. His enthusiasm for biking has also rubbed off on a number of our neighbours. When we moved to the village in 2005 there was not a bike to be seen, but now we are surrounded by middle aged and pensionable age men donning biking gear. Our nearest neighbour has 5 bikes (that’s crazy, we have a mere duo of bikes). Some of our trips have been very sociable with our neighbours joining in and we have made a number of good friends on biking holidays. 10 The bribe (a day trip to Grantham to view bronze Mau kittens). This was a case of unashamed bribery & manipulation in an effort to persuade Rodney that we really must have another kitten and to make the trip up North to see the litter. “We’ll go on the bike” I say enthusiastically. Do I enjoy it? Well, YES, I do love the feeling of being part of a journey rather than simply getting from A to B in a box on four wheels. HOWEVER, with this comes the realisation of your own vulnerability when you are putting your life solely in the hands of another person, two wheels & an engine. So where have we been? Our trips vary from The modest (a trip to a nearby pub for lunch or tea room) The sociable (weekends away with neighbours & friends). This year we had a brilliant weekend in May on the Isle of Wight with glorious sunny weather thrown in Visiting a tea plantation in Kerala The wet (a week in the Loire Valley when it rained constantly. Lovely countryside, but biking in the wet is dismal) The terrifying (two weeks in Kerala in South West India on an Indian built Royal Enfield bike touring the tea plantations and hillsides. This was incredibly exhilarating, stimulating and terrifying all at the same time) The two of us towards the end of our holiday in India. By Janet Williams SPOT PRESS!
