FAMILY HIKES, TOURS
AND MOUNTAINEERING
CANI-RANDO
Cani-rando is the summer
version of dog-sledding. The
same dogs who pull the sledges
in the winter tow the children
along hiking tracks in the
summer. The children wear a
harness, which is attached to
the dogs via a lunge. It is
completely safe and children
love it.
The Bureau des Guides in
Aussois organises half-day
outings for children over seven
years old. They cost €24 per
person.
Contamines Montjoie © Savoie Mont Blanc Lansard
Nearly one in two
holidaymakers to Savoie
Mont Blanc goes hiking
during their visit.
Families
In La Plagne children as young
as six years old can go on a day
of cani-rando with their parents.
It costs €28 per person.
Aravis
A night under the stars in Manigod: after a
day’s hiking in the Aravis region with a
qualified guide, spend the night in complete
wilderness. The guide will choose a safe and
beautiful spot to set up a bivouac for the
night. After watching the sunset, hikers will
enjoy a simple dinner under the moonlight
before sleeping in their tents. The following
day, everybody will be up early to watch the
local fauna awake – chamois, mountain goats
and marmots. A real family adventure!

www.compagnie-guides-aravis.com
www.guides-savoie.com
The same type of package is available in Les
Sybelles, with Patrick as your guide, and in
Canton d’Aiguebelle – Porte de Maurienne.
The latter is a three-day walk, with two
nights in tents.
Flaine
Look for marmots in Flaine! If it is easy to
hear the marmots thanks to their distinctive
whistle, it can be difficult to spot them
unless you know exactly where to look.
Flaine Mountain organises three-hour walks
for families with children over six years old
to spot and watch the funny little creatures

Too busy looking up to spot mountain goats
and chamois, we sometimes forget to look
down… where there are lots of fascinating
insects to observe. Manigod organises ‘Dans
les secrets de la nature’ outings for children
aged six to 12, where they can discover all
the secrets of the insects’ lives.

Vanoise
The Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise is one
of the most beautiful walks in the Alps, in
the heart of the Vanoise National Park

flora and fauna. Most hikers see ibex,
chamois and eagles along the way.

depending on the chosen itinerary. It can be
started from Pralognan-la-Vanoise, or in the
Maurienne valley, from Aussois or Termignon.

NEW REFUGES
In the Haute Maurienne
Vanoise, an hour’s walk from
Bramans, the Refuge Lo
Tsmaou, which means chamois
in Savoyard dialect, will open
in July. It can sleep up to 36
people, in rooms with two to
eight beds. With solar panels
for the hot water and
photovoltaic panels for
electricity, the refuge is
completely self-sufficient.
The refuge is located on the
route of the Haute Maurienne
Tour, a 10-day tour.
Restaurant La Ferme du
Danay in Saint-Jean-de-Sixt is
becoming a refuge. A 19-bed
dormitory has been created in
the stable. Open all year, La
Ferme du Danay is a great
place to spend a night for
people hiking or ski touring in
Les Aravis mountain range.
Beaufortain
The Tour du Beaufortain is usually done in
seven days. It starts from the traditional
hamlet of Queige, just above the small town
of Beaufort. It begins with beautiful views
over the Aravis, Le Charvin and Mont Blanc.
On day three, Europe’s highest summit is so
close it feels like you could touch it. The
fourth night is at the Refuge de Presset,
which overhangs a beautiful mountain lake,
with impressive views of the Pierra Menta,
the Beaufortain’s iconic jagged mountain.
Day five, one of the most beautiful stages,
takes hikers to the heart of the Beaufort
pastures. On day six, a break by the Tournant
Lake will be much appreciated.
The tour is 42.5 hours of walking, with a
total vertical climb of 4,363m.
It can be done between mid-June and midSeptember.
Les Bauges
Tour des Bauges: Between Lake Annecy and
Lake Aix-les-Bains, the Bauges Regional
Park is a varied area, with vast forests on
the Revard Plateau and pastures and cliffs
in the heart of the park. Its geology is
spectacular with impressive caves and
gorges. The five-day tour is a gentle walk,
where hikers have many opportunities to
stop in traditional villages and farms, and
to taste the local cheese, the Tome des
Bauges, with a glass of Savoie wine. The
tour starts from the hamlet of Mont-Devan,
just above Bellecome-en-Bauges.
The Tour des Bauges takes just under 27
hours, with a total vertical climb of 3,220m.
It can be done between May and October.
www.terres-altitude.com
From €285 per person (including half board,
luggage transfer, map, topo guide, compass,
but not lunches and drinks).
Les Menuires
Tour de la Pointe de la Masse: Starting from
Les Menuires, this tour can only be done in
two days, with a night in a refuge. It is a
walk which shows a completely different
side of the Belleville Valley. Far from the ski
lifts and buildings, hikers will enjoy a
peaceful and beautiful environment.
The tour can be done with a guide from the
Bureau des Guides et des Accompagnateurs de
la Vallée des Belleville, +33 (0)4 79 01 04 15

FAMILY HIKES, TOURS

Chamonix celebrates the
150th anniversary of the
golden age of
mountaineering
The Golden Age of Alpinism
reached its climax in 1865
and was immortalised by
65 first ascents, made by
63 alpinists. Among them,
there were 34 British,
13 Austrian, 9 Swiss,
6 Italian and one French.
This intense period of
exploration and adventure
was pioneered by the
Victorians and
‘mountaineering’
developed as a ‘sport’ with
no scientific justification.
From June to September
2015, the Chamonix Mont
Blanc Valley will honour
the guides, alpinists,
artists and photographers
of the Golden Age.
Nine temporary exhibitions
dedicated to 1865 will take place
in the Chamonix Valley as well as
a series of conferences in both
French and English .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
© Monica Dalmasso
To celebrate its 10th
anniversary, Tignes’ Bike Park,
with its partner Commencal, is
organising Commencal Days.
There will be equipment tests
and entertainment, during the
day and into the night, under
the light of the full moon. A
concert, Live Tignes, will end
the celebration.
When it opened 10 years ago,
the Bike Park had 5,900 MTB
runs through it; in 2014 there
were 140,000.
More and more resorts are creating safe
and easy areas and runs to attract beginners
and families. Valmorel, which already has
six runs, has a new learning area. Les Carroz
has created a 3km family run on the bike
park.
In Châtel, a new family run will be created
on the bike park. Starting near the
Rochassons chairlift, the 3km run will go
gently down the pastures, at the foot of the
beautiful Mont Chèsery.
Les Albiez, in the Maurienne Valley, has
France’s highest BMX terrain.
There is a new 4km blue run in Les Houches,
a new green in Pralognan-la-Vanoise and
two new easy downhill runs in La Plagne
Centre (green and blue).
Special trainings
La Rosière
In La Rosière, Bike Academy offers five-day
downhill-mountain biking training camps for
children from seven to 12 years old, and
teenagers from 13 to 16 years old. With two
and a half hours of tuition every day, they
will learn or improve their downhill technique.
It costs €125 for children and €175 for
teenagers. It includes bike hire, protective
kit, an instructor and a diploma at the end
of the five days.
Les Gets
In Les Portes du Soleil, Les Gets Bike School
is a new school offering a five-day course
in downhill and freeride biking for experts.
It cost €160 for 5 afternoons, lift pass
included.

THE GREAT LAKES
Savoie Mont Blanc has four large lakes: Lake Geneva, Lake Annecy, Lake Bourget, and Lake
Aiguebelette.
Many mountain resorts have man-made lakes, which are very pleasant to swim in. There are also
many beautiful natural mountain lakes, some at high altitude, which make a good destination for a
mountain walk – however only the brave swim in these lakes as the water temperature is always
very cold!
In total, there are 90 supervised beaches on the lakes of the Savoie Mont Blanc region.
Four big lakes
LAKE GENEVA (OR LAKE LEMAN)
Savoie Mont Blanc shares Lake Geneva,
the largest lake in Western Europe, with
Switzerland, but most of the southern
banks are French.
Lake Geneva can be quite windy and is
therefore a good place for kite-surfing and
windsurfing.

monuments, François Châtillon and interior
designer François Champsaur have managed
this huge project.

At 1,430m, the Brasserie du Galibier, in
Valloire, is France’s highest microbrewery,
and one of the highest in Europe. Le Galibier,
a famous summit in the French Alps, has
exceptionally pure water straight from the
glacier. Thanks to the high-quality water
and the knowledge of the Master brewer,
Le Galibier brewery makes three types of
excellent beer.
The Brasserie de la Vanoise in La Norma,
in the Maurienne Valley, brews an organic beer
mixed with locally-grown saffron. They make
a blond beer, a white beer and a brown ale.
Brewed and drank in Saint-Gervais! La
Marmotte beer is made at the foot of MontBlanc and can be bought at the Pur Bar in
Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc.
Two times World Champion
The Brasserie du Mont Blanc in Chambéry
has been recognised twice at the World Beer
Awards – in 2013 for its white beer and two
years later, the Rousse du Mont Blanc took
the title for the world’s best amber ale.
La Brasserie des Cîmes, located in Aixles-Bains, makes five excellent beers, each
of them with a funky label. There are three
blonds (Cimoise, Hors Piste and Yéti), a white
beer (l’Aiguille Blanche) and a pale ale (Piste
Noire).
The Brasserie de la Vallée du Giffre in
Morillon makes 12 types of beer, all low in
alcohol.
The Bec Jaune Brewery in Morzine brews
its own beer as well as importing a large
selection of beers. Enjoy a beer with some
of their delicious food made with local and
seasonal products.
In Chamonix, the MBC (Micro Brasserie
de Chamonix) also makes its own beer and
serves a large variety of burgers and other
food.
