Fire Safety Reminders
October 4-10 was Fire Prevention Week,
and at Dominick your comfort and safety
are always our first priority. That’s why we
offer 24-hour emergency services and
it’s why we’re providing you with this list
of fire extinguisher safety reminders, which
will help make sure you’re prepared to
protect your home and your family in
case of a fire.
QInstall fire extinguishers close to exits
and always keep your back to a clear
exit when you use the device, so you can
make a quick escape if the fire cannot
be controlled.
QPurchase multi-purpose portable fire
extinguishers that are large enough to
put out a small fire, but aren’t so heavy
that they’re hard to handle.
QRead the instructions that come with
the fire extinguisher and familiarize
yourself with all the necessary parts and
operating procedures.
QTo operate a fire extinguisher, remember
the word PASS:
–P
ull the pin; hold the extinguisher with
the nozzle pointing away from you; and
release the locking mechanism.
–A
im low; point the extinguisher at the
base of the fire.
– Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
– Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.
QMost importantly, don’t try to be a hero.
In case of a fire, your first moves
should always be getting everyone out
of the home and calling 9-1-1.
Use a portable fire extinguisher
only when the fire is
confined to a small area
and isn’t growing, when
everyone else has exited
the building, when the fire
department has been called
or is being called, and if the
room isn’t filled with smoke.
If the room fills with smoke,
leave immediately.

Your Heating
Season Checklist
Fall has only just arrived, but you can tell winter is already
on its way. Will you be ready for it? To prepare your home
and your family for the upcoming season, make sure you
can cross all these items off your to-do list (if you haven’t
already taken care of them):
Test your heating system –
Before calling Dominick to report a heating
outage or no-heat emergency, make sure you’ve
tested your system. As much as we’d love to hear from
you, a few quick steps can help you avoid an unnecessary
service call. Check that the thermostat is in the “heat” or
“on” position, turn it up at least 10 degrees higher than
the room temperature, and listen carefully for your heating
equipment to switch on. The system might not start up
immediately, so please wait 10 minutes, then check if
warm air is coming out of the registers or baseboards. If it
isn’t, press the reset button on your burner’s relay once and
only once. If your heating system still doesn’t switch on,
call Dominick. We are always happy to help you.
Schedule your heating
system’s annual tune-up –
Preventive maintenance can improve your
system’s efficiency by up to five percent or more, protect
you against an untimely mid-season breakdown, and
extend the life span of your heating equipment.
Sign up for automatic
delivery and online billing –
Join the great deal of satisfied Dominick
customers who never have to call to schedule a delivery or
make a payment over the phone. Enjoy the convenience
and peace of mind of Dominick’s automatic delivery and
online account management services.

This past May, the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) released
a congressional report titled “Developing a Renewable Biofuel Option
for the Home Heating Sector.” The report, which combines decades
of scientific research by leading experts, offers some big news for
Dominick customers. Perhaps most importantly, it shows that B2
Bioheat® fuel (the fuel in your tank, a blend of 2% biodiesel and
98% low-sulfur heating oil) produces lower greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions than natural gas over 20 years. This is due primarily to the
fact that natural gas heating releases methane, a dangerous pollutant
that poses a far greater threat in terms of GHG emissions than the nearzero levels of carbon dioxide produced by Bioheat® fuel.
Enroll in a Heating
Service Plan or
Maintenance Savings Plan –
You’ll get a free annual tune-up, priority service, $50 in
Loyalty Credits, and parts and labor coverage or discounts
on a number of repairs and replacement parts, plus the
peace of mind that you and your family deserve.*
Another relevant fact detailed by the report is something we at
Dominick have been saying for years: Bioheat® fuel is completely
compatible with existing Oilheat systems and performs just as well
as, if not better than, unblended heating oil when it comes to heating
your home.
Keep a shovel handy –
During heavy snowfalls, Dominick’s trucks are
usually the last off the road and the first back
on it, but our drivers can’t complete their deliveries if
they can’t find your tank, so be sure your snow shovel is
accessible, please remember to clear a path to your tank
and mark your fill pipe, and most importantly, stay safe and
exercise caution this winter!
For the best possible clean heating combination, Dominick
recommends pairing our Bioheat® fuel with an ENERGY STAR®-rated
oil-fired furnace or boiler. We offer a wide range of high-efficiency
heating systems by leading brands like System 2000 and Thermo Pride,
and can help you secure a great deal on them with an AFC First Energy
Loan. Plus, we make sure everything is installed correctly and up to spec,
so you can enjoy maximum efficiency and savings.
If you need any assistance with any of the above
preparations, please do not hesitate to call Dominick at
203-866-5836. We’re here to help.
* Coverage varies between Service Plans and Maintenance Savings Plans.
Please call for details.

FALL 2015
IAQ IQ Test

and Don’ts
Experiencing dry throat? Itchy eyes? Runny
nose? Headaches, dizziness and fatigue? These
symptoms are all signs of poor IAQ. Well-insulated
homes are a breeding ground for mildew, pollen,
mold, fungi, bacteria, viruses, dust and mites …
and homeowners often add to the problem with
cooking smoke, pet dander, beauty products,
household cleaners and more. Fortunately, you
can fight back against these pollutants and
improve your home’s IAQ by following these
simple do’s and don’ts.

literally! To find out more, visit dominickcomfort.com or call 203-866-5836.
4. Answer: False, germicidal UV lamps and lights kill organisms that can grow on the indoor coil of your heating system, such as
mold and bacteria. This offers the added benefit of improving overall system performance as well.
3. Answer: C – Also known as Artemisia absinthium, the Oldman is a severe allergen that
pollinates from summer to fall. Goosetongue and Spiny Cockleburr are considered moderate
allergens, while Fall Panic Grass, despite its name, is considered a mild allergen.
2. Answer: True, today’s thermostats can be used to adjust temperature and humidity levels.
Humidity is a major component of indoor air quality, as air that is too moist can produce
molds and fungus, while air that is too dry can cause itchy throats and dry skin.
1. Answer: D – Windows, doors, shoes, clothes, and vents all invite pollen into your home.
Keeping doors and windows closed, vents clean, and shoes off will significantly reduce the
presence of pollen and other irritants inside your home.
