WHAT’S HAPPENING
NFHS Coaches Association Award Program
We are proud to announce that, again this year, the Board of Control has
given TSSAA permission to participate in the NFHS Coaches Association
Award Program. This program is designed to recognize State Active Coaches
of the Year and Sectional Coaches of the Year in each sport sanctioned by the
Association. Coaches are selected based on their accomplishments the previous
school year. State and Sectional Coach of the Year winners will receive a
certificate from the National Federation recognizing their accomplishments.
Sectional Award winners will also be considered for the NFHS National Coach
of the Year Award. A National committee will select the National Coaches of
the Year and these individuals will receive a plaque from the national office
recognizing their accomplishment. Each state is also allowed to nominate
one Citation (Coach) nominee. NFHS Citations are presented to individuals
who have made significant contributions to the NFHS and/or other national
organizations that have had an impact on high school activities. Nominees for
Contributor of the Year must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship,
ethical conduct, moral character, and carry the endorsement of their respective
state high school association.
Recent updates to the Portal now allow each member school to closely
monitor its financial standing with the association. A statement
including all charges and payments is visible under the Accounting
menu option on the school dashboard. Schools can also print invoices
from the same page.
Postseason Wrestling Forms Online
Postseason financial forms for Wrestling are now inside the Portal.
Once administrators fill in the form fields, the totals are calculated
automatically and a PDF of the completed form is immediately available
for printing.
TSSAA Hall of Fame
We are currently in the process of selecting the TSSAA Hall of Fame Class of
2014. We will be announcing this year’s inductees during the month of February.
The luncheon and induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 18. It
will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in
Murfreesboro.

To the best of anyone’s knowledge, something happened at this year’s state
bowling tournament that has never happened before in TSSAA history. All four
of the state championship teams from 2014 each repeated as state champions in
2015.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE RECOGNITION
ADMINISTRATOR - MIKE MULLINS
Mr. Mullins’ term as Athletic Director has been more than simply bricks and mortar.
Since becoming the AD, the Wildcats have won 6 state championships, had 5 state
runner-up finishes, and earned countless sectional, regional, and district titles. Along with
the numerous team accomplishments, there have been individual awards as well, ranging
from All-American to All-District recognitions. Additionally, Mike had a large hand in
assembling a highly regarded Oak Ridge coaching staff. Mr. Mullins was recognized for
his own accomplishments by being awarded the 2009-2010 A.F. Bridges Athletic Director
of the Year Award.
TSSAA is proud to recognize Mike Mullins as its
distinguished service honoree as an administrator.
Mike Mullins is finishing his 9th year as Athletic
Director at Oak Ridge High School and his 29th year
in interscholastic athletics and education. Prior to being
named Athletic Director in 2005, Mr. Mullins previously
served the Wildcats as an Assistant Athletic Director for
four years.
Coach Mullins began his coaching and teaching career at his alma mater, Powell Valley
High School in 1986. He served as Defensive Coordinator and Strength Coach for the
Indians Football team for three years before moving to Oak Ridge. In 1989, he became a
part of an Oak Ridge Football staff that averaged 11 wins per season for 14 years. Some
of the many highlights included winning the AAA state championship in 1991 and being
nationally ranked by USA Today.
As Athletic Director, Mike Mullins is responsible
for leading an athletic department that is committed to
excellence, both in competition and in the classroom. The broad-based athletic program is
comprised of 17 varsity sports and serves over 500 student-athletes.
As the Athletic Director at ORHS, Mike has spearheaded a number of capital
improvement projects. The most striking undertaking is the Wildcat Arena, a part of a
$61 million dollar renovation to Oak Ridge High School. This state-of-the-art facility is
home to the Wildcat Basketball and Volleyball teams and is one of the finest high school
venues in the state. Other facility upgrades completed under Mr. Mullins’ watch include:
the PRO2serve soccer complex, newly renovated weight room, and numerous locker room
enhancements. While still in the planning stages, there will also be a multi-million dollar
renovation to historic Blankenship Field.
Mike Mullins has been active, both inside and outside of the high school, serving on
many committees. He has been a TSSAA coordinator for District 3 AAA since 2005, a
member of the TSSAA A.F. Bridges Sportsmanship Committee, and a committee member
for Anderson County Young Life. His professional involvements include memberships
with the NIAAA, TIAAA, TACA, and the National Strength Coaches Association.
A 1986 graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, Mike and his wife, Karla, reside in
Oak Ridge, Tennessee. They have two sons, Aaron and Austin.
OFFICIAL - BUDDY FORREST
TSSAA would like to honor Buddy Forrest for his
contribution to the many student athletes and coaches he
has worked with over his many years in TSSAA.
state basketball and baseball tournaments. He later became and is still a TSSAA basketball
supervisor, baseball and softball assignor. Buddy has held these positions for TSSAA for
several years, continuing to do an outstanding job of teaching and training officials in these
sports.
Buddy grew up and still lives in Waverly, Tennessee.
He attended Waverly Central High School where he
played football, basketball and baseball. After high
school he was drafted into the U.S. Army. While in the
Army, Buddy spent 14 months in the Vietnam War.
Buddy is married to Teresa and they have four children and three
grandchildren.
TSSAA is honored to recognize Buddy Forrest for his many years of service to
the athletes and coaches in the State of Tennessee.
Buddy first registered with TSSAA in 1974. He
went on to have an outstanding officiating career in
basketball, baseball and softball. He worked numerous post season tournaments along with
CONTRIBUTOR - LARRY WILKERSON
One of Larry’s great passions in all of his years of golf is the Masters tournament
in Augusta. Since 1980, he has attended all but one Masters Tournament, either as a
spectator or as a volunteer. He started working at the tournament as a Marshall, mostly on
hole number one, and 2014 marked his 20th year in that role. By far the best part of this
experience for him now is that his two sons have also been selected as Marshalls. This past
year, all three of them were able to work together on hole number one, and in appreciation
for their service they are welcomed back to Augusta to play one day in the spring.
Larry Wilkerson has been a very instrumental fixture
at the TSSAA State Golf Championships for many years.
A retired real estate agent and property appraiser from
middle Tennessee, Larry has made quite a name for
himself in the world of golf officiating.
Larry is a former member of the Tennessee Golf
Association Board of Directors, as well as the TGA
Rules Committee. He has also served on the Rules
Committee for several NCAA Regional Championships.
He has officiated in numerous championships on the
collegiate level for the Sunbelt and Ohio Valley conferences.
Larry has worked for the TSSAA at its State Golf Championships for the past 15 years,
beginning in 1999. He has served in the role of starter, rules official, and scoring official
at the state tournament. The TSSAA is very appreciative of Larry’s service, as he brings a
high level of expertise and a wealth of experience to the state tournament.
Larry and his wife, Jane, have two sons and reside in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE RECOGNITION
COACH - LESLEY SMITH RIDDLE
Coach Riddle is now in her 14th year as head coach at Livingston Academy. Her teams
have made state tournament appearances seven times with two semi-Final appearances, 1
Runner-up, and 1 State Championship in 2004. As of January 6, 2015, her collective win/
loss record is 501-202. Lesley has received numerous coaching awards over the years, but
none of those would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of all the
young athletes that she has coached.
TSSAA is proud to recognize Lesley Smith Riddle
as its distinguished service honoree as a coach. Lesley
played high school basketball for Coach Larry Looper
at Livingston Academy, as a four year starter, with a
team record of 108-14, culminating with Livingston
Academy’s first every state championship in her senior
year, 1990.
After six and a half years in the classroom at Livingston Academy, Lesley became an
Assistant Principal. She served in that capacity for two and a half years. In the fall of 2009
she was hired as Principal, the position she currently holds.
Lesley signed a basketball scholarship with Vanderbilt
University where she double majored in Mathematics
and Secondary Education. Her team advanced to the
NCAA Final Four in 1993.
While her life is very busy during the school year, she manages to find time to enjoy
boating, skiing, hiking, and many outdoor adventures with her husband Tim.
Lesley graduated from Vanderbilt in the spring of 1994, and shortly thereafter, accepted
her first teaching and head coaching position at Oneida City High School. During her
three years at Oneida, Lesley’s teams had one Sub-state, and two final four state tourney
appearances. In 1998, Lesley accepted a teaching and head coaching position at Farragut
High School in Knoxville, Tennessee. She spent four years there before returning to her
alma mater to take up the reins at Livingston Academy.

MIDDLE SCHOOL - INDIA WEAVER
TSSAA is proud to recognize India Weaver as its
distinguished service honoree at the middle school level.
India began her career as a Certified Athletic Trainer and was later promoted to Head
Certified Athletic Trainer in 2007 where she was responsible for the strategic direction of
Athletic Health Services. India’s diverse responsibilities within the department fueled her
desire to become more involved with management and operations.
India Weaver has been creating value for Memphis
City Schools and now Shelby County Schools for over
a decade. During her tenure, she matriculated through
all aspects of sports. Her progression began with middle
school athletics and each year the scope of her responsibilities expanded resulting in a strong command of
athletic administration.
In 2011, India received the TSSAA A. F. Bridges System Administrator of the Year
Award followed by the TIAAA Athletic Administrator of the Year Award in 2012. In
2015, she was promoted to Athletic Manager of Shelby County Schools, the largest school
district in the state of Tennessee. It is comprised of 60+ secondary schools, 600+ coaches
and 13,000 student-athletes. Ms. Weaver is the first woman to ever occupy this role. As
a proud TMSAA and TIAAA board member, India plans to continue to build upon the
foundation of her predecessors to advance the mission of Shelby County Schools.
Professionally, Ms. Weaver is unique because of her
triangulation of skill sets in education, health services and athletic business. India is a
Tennessee licensed Teacher, licensed Allied Sports Health Professional and a Nationally
Certified Athletic Administrator.
TSSAA proudly salutes India Weaver for her outstanding efforts in the state of
Tennessee.

As part of the "JUST DO WHAT'S RIGHT!" program, TSSAA recognizes member schools that have made the effort to remind their
athletic family that there is a particular code of conduct, a particular level of expected behavior, and a way to act that is proper if
one wishes to be a part of an athletic contest, regardless of how they participate.
"JUST DO WHAT'S RIGHT!" focuses on the foundation of what we hope all participants will do. Just do what you are supposed to
do in representing yourself, your family, your school and community.
Those schools that received no reported unsportsmanlike conduct incidents during the 2010-11
2013-13 season have received a certificate
highlighting the "JUST DO WHAT'S RIGHT!" logo and this effort. We are specifically recognizing proper sportsmanship at athletic
contests, but we all understand that the athletic contests are a small part of our educational program.
DIVISIONAL AWARDS
Local officials associations have been asked to nominate schools that they service that have displayed this overall positive effort
to teach, expect, and demand a positive atmosphere of sportsmanship at their particular contests. Member schools have also been
asked to nominate individuals or schools for special recognition for going the extra mile to do what's right. Nominations have also
come from representatives of the Tennessee Obervers Program for Sports. The TOPS observers have shared the positive efforts
that have been recognized at athletic contests across our state.
From these nominees and the schools that have received no reported unsportsmanlike conduct during the previous school year,
27 schools have been selected to receive the A.F. Bridges Award at the divisional level. Three Class A, three Class AA, and three
Class AAA schools in each grand division have been recognized for a total of nine schools in each division and 27 schools overall.
These schools will be presented "JUST DO WHAT'S RIGHT!" recognition banners at the regional meetings in each grand division
of our state during November. Again, the TSSAA Board of Control has earmarked $27,000 toward a scholarship fund to recognize
outstanding student athletes from the A. F. Bridges Divisional Finalists. Each school will receive $1,000 toward a scholarship to
recognize an outstanding student athlete who represents the essence of good sportsmanship and citizenship. The criteria for this
scholarship will be established by the school, and student athletes will be recognized later during the school year.
STATE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Of these 27 divisional recipients, one school in each class will receive Tennessee's top award for overall outstanding effort in its
division. These schools will be presented the A.F. BRIDGES STATE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE. This is the highest award that can
be bestowed upon a school to honor its overall efforts to promote citizenship and sportsmanship at school, and at athletic
contests.
ATHLETIC DISTRICT AWARDS
The A.F. Bridges Awards program includes awards for School System Administrator of the Year, Principal of the Year, Athletic
Director of the Year, Female Coach of the Year, Male Coach of the Year, Official of the Year, and Contributor of the Year. Recognition
will be made in the above mentioned categories in each of the nine athletic districts in our state. Nominations have been made by
a Citizenship/Sportsmanship Committee in each athletic district and final selection has been made by a State Selection Committee.
The awards are named the A.F. BRIDGES AWARD in honor of the TSSAA's first executive secretary.
A.F. BRIDGES
A.F. Bridges was born in Athens, Louisiana on March 17, 1905. He attended school in Lincoln County, Tennessee and graduated from Central
High School in Fayetteville in 1922. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from Peabody College in Nashville. He
began his work as a teacher and coach at Peabody High School in Trenton, and after a number of years with
the Milan, Henderson, and Covington schools, he returned in 1936 as Superintendent of the Trenton schools.
Soon after, he became the Superintendent of the Covington City Schools. After three years in Covington, Mr.
Bridges was named as the first full-time Executive Secretary of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic
Association and established the first TSSAA state office in Trenton in 1946. Under the leadership of A. Foster
Bridges, athletics in the state of Tennessee reached a level of excellence and competence that earned the
respect of all people. Mr. Bridges brought national recognition to Tennessee in high school athletics, and
particularly in the field of girls' athletics and in the establishing of one of the most respected training
programs for officials in the nation.Mr. Bridges was a person of high principles who displayed firmness and
fairness, as well as the high ideals of ethics and integrity, as he and many other school people established
the foundation of TSSAA across our state. It is our sincere wish that through honoring Mr. Bridges by
naming this awards program after him, we will have the opportunity to remind young people of the positive
characteristics, not only of this gentleman, but of athletics in general and participants specifically.

A True Game Changer
Team members of the 1965 Father Ryan and Pearl teams, as well as the current team members from Father Ryan and Pearl-Cohn,
are recognized on the court prior to the 50th anniversary game played on January 5 at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville.
Think back 50 years. It was 1965 and the South and the nation were in the midst of
the Civil Rights era. Sit-ins in Nashville. Bombings in Birmingham. Freedom Riders
traveling the Deep South. It was a time of conflict and concern.

his brother, long-time Pearl coach James Armstrong to receive the salutes from the
crowd. Next to them were Father Ryan players Pat Sanders, Hal Hounihan, Bob Forte,
Lyn Dempsey, Don Craighead, Kenny Crump, Martin Gilmore and others, including
coaches Murray Lynch and Hosey Holzapfel.
But on January 4, 1965, those days of
conflict changed to a night of community.
That evening Father Ryan High School
and Pearl High School, two of the best
basketball teams in the state, met on the
court at Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium
in front of a crowd of 9,000 in the first
athletic event in the area between an
African-American team and an integrated
team. It was a game that featured a stirring
finish and a lasting impact, in large measure
because the huge throng gathered, cheered,
celebrated and went home, without incident.
It was a game decided by a Lyn Dempsey basket over Perry Wallace at the buzzer,
giving Father Ryan a 52-51 win. It was also a game that changed the South. That
same year, the TSSAA opened its organization to all schools across the state, the only
Southern state association to do so voluntarily, and paved the way for Pearl’s run to the
state title in 1966.
The significance of the game and its impact on race relations in the South was the
reason for a dramatic, daylong celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the game on
January 5th of this year. Father Ryan played Pearl-Cohn at Municipal Auditorium

But the loudest applause cascaded down onto Mrs. Carolyn Ridley, widow of Pearl’s
Coach Cornelius Ridley, and Father Ryan’s Bill Derrick. Ridley and Derrick were the
visionaries behind the game, the men who simply said, “It wasn’t right that whites and
blacks couldn’t play against each other,” and who demonstrated that belief that night,
one that began a lifelong friendship between the two TSSAA Hall of Famers.

Having integrated athletics in 1963 with the addition of senior Jesse Porter and junior
Willie Brown, inducted last year into the TSSAA Hall of Fame as a Contributor, and
as the first school in the South to integrate its classrooms, Father Ryan had long been
a leader in social justice. And Pearl High had been a jewel in Nashville’s education
system since its founding in the 1880s. These two schools and this game went a long
way toward changing thinking in the South, both about athletics and about race. That
was the subject of the Nashville Sports Council’s Luncheon that day and the focus of
the new exhibit at the Civil Rights Room of the Downtown Public Library, opened that
afternoon in front of 100 guests who heard the memories and words of Wallace and
Porter, two true pioneers. It was the reason that the New York Times sent a columnist
to Nashville to report on these historic events.
A day to remember…for the schools for the TSSAA, for the city and for the state. A
night of community that changed the South.

DIVISION I, CLASS A LINEMAN - ZACH STEWART - Coalfield High School
6’4”, 305-pound offensive tackle and defensive end. He is a senior, team captain, and has started for Coalfield since he was in the 8th grade. On
defense this season he had 77 tackles, 21 tackles for a loss, 11 sacks, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. As an offensive tackle he
had 52 pancake blocks and didn’t allow a sack all season. Zach was District Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 and the District MVP in 2013.
He was the winner of the Class A Lineman Mr. Football Award last year as a junior.
DIVISION I, CLASS AA LINEMAN - PARKER HOWELL - Christ Presbyterian Academy

PARKER HOWELL
6’5”, 275-pound offensive and defensive tackle. He is a senior captain and three year starter for the Lions. On the offensive side of the ball he
graded out at 94% this season with 74 knock downs. On defense he had 22 tackles, four tackles for a loss, and three quarterback sacks. Parker has
been named the 2014 District 12-AA Lineman of the Year. He was an All-District selection last year as a junior.
DIVISION I, CLASS AAA LINEMAN - JACK JONES - Oakland High School
6’5”, 290-pound offensive tackle. He is a senior captain and three year starter for the Patriots. He graded out at over 90% for the entire season
and had 94 pancake blocks in eight regular season games. He was named the 2014 District 7-AAA Lineman of the Year and has been selected to
participate in the Under Armour All-American game. Jack was named to the All-Midstate, All-District, and All-State teams in 2013. He was the
winner of the Class AAA Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Lineman Award last season.
DII-A LINEMAN - BRANT MITCHELL - Webb School of Knoxville

BRANT MITCHELL
6’2”, 245-pound fullback, guard, and linebacker. He is a senior, team captain, and four year starter for the Spartans. This season he had 76 total
tackles, one sack, and five interceptions on defense. As a fullback he carried the ball 93 times for 523 yards and seven touchdowns. Brant was
an All-Region and All-State selection in 2013. He was the winner of the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Award last year and was named the
Defensive MVP of the 2012 BlueCross Bowl.
DII-AA LINEMAN - DREW RICHMOND - Memphis University School
6’5”, 315-pound offensive and defensive lineman. He is a senior and three year starter for the Owls who has helped lead his team to the BlueCross
Bowl championship game as a sophomore and junior. He has been named to the All-Metro, All-Region, and All-State teams both as a junior and
senior. He has been invited to play in both the Army and Under Armour All-American games, and has chosen to participate in the Under Armour
game.

6’2”, 200-pound senior quarterback. He is a team captain and four year starter for the Lions. This season he completed 70% of his passes for
2,889 yards and 39 touchdowns. He also had 329 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground. Kyle threw for four or more touchdowns seven
times this season. He is a finalist for the West Tennessee Player of the Year Award. Kyle set a new state record for career passing yards (11,131)
during the final game of his high school career in Week 2 of the playoffs.
DIVISION I, CLASS AA BACK - KE’SHAWN VAUGHN - Pearl Cohn High School
5’11”, 205-pound senior running back. He is a team captain and three year starter for the Firebirds. This season he carried
the ball 162 times for 2,031 yards and 33 touchdowns. He averaged 12.5 yards per carry. He was a preseason All-State
selection and has been chosen to play in the Toyota East/West All-Star Game. Last year he set the school record for most
touchdowns in one game with six. Ke’Shawn was a finalist for the 2013 Class AA Mr. Football Award.
DIVISION I, CLASS AAA BACK - JAUAN JENNINGS - Blackman High School

JAUAN JENNINGS
6’4”, 190-pound quarterback. He is a two year starter and senior captain for the Blaze. He completed 105 of 171 pass
attempts for 1,746 yards and 16 touchdowns, while throwing only two interceptions. He carried the ball 98 times for 684
yards and 15 touchdowns for an average of seven yards per carry. Jauan is an All-State selection. His athleticism goes
beyond the football field, as he was named MVP of the Class AAA state basketball tournament last year as a junior.

Middle District MVP this season.

COLE EUVERARD
5’11”, 185-pound senior quarterback. He is a team captain and two year starter for the Big Red. This season he completed
85 of 139 pass attempts for 1,497 yards and 16 touchdowns. He carried the ball 96 times for 614 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Cole was a preseason All-State selection this season and was a Division II-AA All-Region pick last year.
KICKER OF THE YEAR - LASZLO TOSER - Ooltewah High School
5’9”, 185-pound senior kicker and punter. He is a three year starter for the Owls. This season he made 51 of 52 extra point
attempts and 15 of 19 field goal attempts. His longest field goal of the season was from 52 yards. 70 of his 77 kickoffs have
gone for touchbacks. Of 39 punt attempts, nine were inside the 20 and five were inside the 10-yard line. Laszlo was named
the Kohl’s National Kicker of the Week on Octber 3rd of this season. He was named the District 5-AAA Kicker of the Year
in 2013.

The Tennessee Middle School
Committee met for the first time this
school year on November 12th.
Members in attendance were Chic Nute,
Ken Hilliard, India Weaver, Tim Bell,
Matt Calvert, Tommy Shelton, and Jeff
Jones.
It was proposed to the Legislative Council to change track to no
restrictions as it is listed at the High School level. This change
has been approved by the Legislative Council.
The Committee reviewed the TMSAA Bylaws. No proposals
were made at this time.
Article IV, Section 1 of the definition of School Team was
reviewed by the committee. The committee discussed that
students on a schools “club” teams attend the same school
and some use the school name, even if school’s Board of
Controls does not recognize them as a school team. It would
be beneficial for TMSSA member schools to be able to play
the “club” team. TMSAA has made a form for the Nonmember
School Team to fill out to be approved by the TSSAA office if a
member school would like to play against the team.
The TMSAA Committee discussed
why schools do not join the TMSAA
in certain areas of the state. The
Independent Game Rule once again
came up for discussion. Mr. McWhirter
asked the committee members to bring
more feedback from their schools to the next meeting. Other
issues brought up were: member schools and who they can
play, schools must join the association for all sports that they
recognize, and there is a lack of tournaments for some sports in
parts of the state.
The Committee would like to propose that after all school
sports are completed within the month of May, they can have
five days to complete practice after school. For the reasons of
exam schedules and that the students at the middle school level
cannot drive.
It was asked that the committee members submit their area
and sectional basketball information to the TSSAA state office
as soon as possible, so it can be posted on the website. All end
of the year tournaments must be approved by TSSAA.
The Committee approved the new member schools and
placed the schools in their classification. The classification list
is on the TMSAA website.
The Committee reviewed the TMSAA Sports Calendar. The
heat acclimatization rule with three days of shoulder pads and
helmets means that each individual must have practiced 3 days
with shoulder pads and helmets before participating in a game.
The next TMSAA Committee meeting is set for February 11,
2015, at 9:30am.

Coaches Conference will be held at the
Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro on April
20 - 21, 2015. The Athletic Director’s
Conference, organized by the TIAAA,
will also be at the same site on April 19–
21, 2015. Information concerning both
conferences is available on the TSSAA
website.

Cheerleading Certification Course will be administered

begin on Monday, April 20, with registration at 8:30 a.m.
with the first session beginning at 9:00 a.m. Monday will be
a full day of sessions on cheer and dance technique, safety,

Shonnie Speicher started her journey
with TSSAA as an Administrative
Assistant for Assistant Executive Director
Bernard Childress in January of 1996. At
that time, Mr. Childress was in charge
of the TMSAA, Non-Faculty Coaches,
the ASEP Coaches Education Program,
Girls’ Softball, and Cross Country. Her
additional duties included handling awards,
publishing state tournament programs,
and updating the TSSAA website. When
Bradley Lambert was named Director of
Technology, Shonnie’s responsibilities
shifted more towards updating the TSSAA
website, producing the Online Rules Meetings for various
sports, and publishing state tournament programs.
Shonnie grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where she
graduated from Nathan Bedford Forrest High School in 1990.
She attended Trevecca Nazarene College the following fall
where she played volleyball and majored in physical education.
The following year Trevecca added softball as a collegiate
sport and Shonnie played on the first four teams Tevecca
fielded in softball. She graduated in 1995 with a B.S. in
Physical Education and a B.S. in General Science. Shonnie
later returned to Trevecca Nazarene University and graduated
with an M.A. in Organizational Management in 2000.
Shonnie married Loren Speicher in 1994. They currently
reside in Gallatin and have one daughter: Deanna, 9, who is in
third grade at Union STEM and Demonstration School.

Updated CoachSmart app available now

Vanderbilt’s CoachSmart app has been updated, and
the new version is available for download in the iTunes store.
The smartphone app for coaches puts an athletic trainer,
personal assistant and meteorologist all in the palm of their hand.
The iPhone app is the ultimate resource for coaches,
offering real-time information on heat index and lightning strikes,
frequently asked sports medicine and safety questions, and a
group contact feature. The app is not currently available for Android.

If lightning strikes nearby, the app sends an alert to the phone and the resource section
provides information on what to do.
The Home Screen gives current temperature, humidity, heat index and lightning strike
information.
The Map Screen is based on the user’s GPS location. One map shows lightning strikes
within 25 miles, while another uses information from nearby weather stations to post
current conditions, including heat index and wind chill.
The Resources section includes information that athletic trainers commonly dispense,
such as hydration tips, injury prevention, concussion guidelines, and when to go to the
emergency room. The resources will be updated as more information is needed or
guidelines change.
The app includes the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) heat
index guidelines.
The app is free, but live streaming lightning data requires a yearly in-app subscription of $1.99.
A collaboration between Vanderbilt Sports Medicine, the Medical Center’s Strategic Marketing
Department and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, the app is an extension
of Vanderbilt Sports Medicine’s expertise.
