CONCERTS
Our Junior Concert is fast approaching and the children together with their teachers have been working
very hard to prepare a program of items for your
entertainment. The Matinee and Evening Performances will be held next Wednesday, 2nd September.
Because of limited seating at the evening performance, we will be offering just 2 tickets per family in
Round 1. Next Monday, if there are any leftover tickets available, they will be offered as part of Round 2.
Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, it was
very moving to see our students participating in the

Canberra Excursion and PACER
Two weeks ago Stage Three students enjoyed a fantastic 3 day excursion to Canberra to support their
learning of Government. It may not be known to many but the school receives a rebate to reduce the overall
cost of the excursion from PACER (Parliament and Civics Educational Rebate). Under PACER, students who
learn about civics and citizenship in the classroom and visit Parliament House, the Museum of Australian
Democracy at Old Parliament House and/or the National Electoral Education Centre and the Australian War
Memorial, and are more than 150 kilometres from Canberra, are eligible for the rebate. Colo Vale Public
School students received this rebate. We are fortunate to be able to access this Federal Government
initiative.

Well done to all of our fantastic athletes who
went down to Canberra last Friday to
compete in the South Coast Regional
Athletics Championships. A number of students completed personal bests, and made finals,
which is a great effort.
The big news is that our Senior Boys Relay Team (Nathan Hansen, Boyd Roberts, Sebastian
Hernandez and Daniel Wood) came 3rd, which means they are off to represent Colo Vale,
Wingecarribee District and South Coast Region at the NSWPSSA State Athletics Championships at
Homebush on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th October 2015.
Good Luck!!!
The Southern Highlands Challenge forest trail run through Wingello State Forest is on this
Sunday 30th August, and Colo Vale has 16 members participating as part of our school team.
These are Jacob Burgess, Theo Ameria, Tiko Ameria, Pip Macartney-Snape, Tyler Dixon, Joshua
Thorne, Finn Sellick, Olivia Sellick, Marketa Krueger, Yvette Krueger, Michal Krueger, Sean
Krueger, Karen McGrade, Erin Littleton, Amy Littleton, and myself. If you have registered to run
and don't see your name here, it means you didn't select the school option when you registered.
Let me know if that's you, because I can have your name added to the school team, which is
important because there is a prize for the school with the most participants.
There is still time to register, but you need to do it by Thursday 27th to count towards our school
tally.
The bus for the League Tag Gala day is
nearly full, with only 3 or 4 places left. Once
the bus is full there will be a waiting list, in
case anyone drops out. The day is on Friday
4th September, so once the rain clears up we
will have a few lunch time practices. We also
need more parent managers. We have 3 so
far and we are entering 7 teams, so we need
at least 4 more.
Finally, a BIG congratulations goes to Nathan
Hansen. Nathan has been picked to play
touch football in the Under 14's Junior
National Touch Rugby Association. Games
will be played against Qld and New Zealand
in Sydney on the 5th and 6th November
2015. So, we have an International Touch Footy player in our school, WOW. Well done Nathan,
and good luck!!! Don't let the New Zealand Haka put you off!

STUDENT WELFARE
Last week was National Science Week. Scientists are discovering more and more how our
brains actually work.
There are fundamental BRAIN DIFFERENCES keeping struggling kids behind. No more one-size-fits-all
approach to education!
LEFT-BRAIN ACTIVITY in struggling readers is often underdeveloped. This part of the brain helps readers make the connection between letters and sounds, or phonemes (called “phonological processing”)
The OCCIPITAL LOBE is the part of the brain that helps us understand what we
see. While struggling readers may not have vision problems, differences in the
occipital lobe can prevent them from understanding individual letters or words
when they see them.
In a typical brain, WERNICKE’S AREA acts as a giant warehouse
for vocabulary and sounds. For struggling readers, this area
shows less activity and may even be inactive. That means that for
some kids, every word encountered is a new word,
.
all the time
BROCA’S AREA is usually associated with speaking words
aloud. Students with phonological processing issues often show
less activity in this region. It may be a no-brainer (Get it?), but
speech, listening and reading are all interconnected.
AUDITORY-PROCESSING difficulties also contribute to reading struggles. When something interrupts the brain’s ability to process sounds,
it can be difficult to distinguish between words, like rock, rocks and
rocked for example.
Redesign My Brain on DVD: In 2013, TV personality and National Science Week Ambassador ,
Todd Sampson put brain training to the test in the groundbreaking series Redesign My Brain.
Now in the Second Series, Todd is on a quest for an even better brain. Once again he will become
a scientific guinea pig and use the very latest that science has to offer, this time to prove that the
brain can be trained to cope with the challenges of modern life.
It’s an inspirational and unforgettable story that has something in it for everyone.
Series Two of the AACTA Award winning Documentary Series will be available on DVD from
August 20 from all leading retailers. (excerpt-National Science Week Newsletter)
