iscover the bounty of St. Lawrence County! The
2014 Local Food Guide is your key to finding the
freshest, healthiest, and tastiest food direct from our
local farmers. Farms, farmstands, farmers’ markets, u-picks,
and CSAs are all listed. The handy product index toward
the back can help you find specific items, and the locator
map shows how close you are to the farm fresh food you are
searching for. Food assistance resources are listed as well.
Everyone has their own reasons for seeking out local
food. For some, it’s about protecting the environment by
keeping the miles food travels from farm to fork low, or by
buying from farmers whose growing practices are environmentally friendly; for others, eating locally means eating
seasonally, which gives them a feeling of connection to the
natural world; for some people it’s about taste, as every
day food spends on a truck or a boat it loses flavor (and
nutrients), so food that is fresher simply tastes better.
For an increasing number of people, however, the issue
is our local economy. On average, only 11 cents of every
dollar goes to the farmer when you buy your food in a
grocery store. But when you spend your food dollars with
our local producers they get that whole dollar. And for every dollar spent with a locally-owned business, 45 cents is
reinvested in our community, as opposed to 15 cents when
you spend that dollar at a corporate-owned chain.
So as you use this Guide to source great food for
yourself and your family, you are also contributing to the
economic strength of our whole community. Thank you! 

ABOUT THIS GUIDE
The farms listed in this guide have assured us that they sell
food they have raised themselves or food they have produced
themselves using largely local ingredients. Beyond this simple
honor system, GardenShare does not certify locally grown food
or farming practices. In addition to their own food, these farms
may also sell food that is grown by their neighbors, or even
food that is not locally grown or produced. Feel free to ask the
farmer, Did you grow this yourself?
TERMS
Certified Organic: Certified organic farms have met USDA
standards for organic food production, as verified by an
accredited agency such as the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY). Other farms may also follow
organic practices but have chosen not to undergo the certification process.
NOFA-NY Farmer’s Pledge: Signers commit themselves to
ecologically sound farming and to socially responsible labor
and local marketing practices. Ask the farmer about his or her
farming practices.
CSA: Some farms offer a Community Supported Agriculture
(CSA) option. Consumers can purchase a share of the farm’s harvest at the beginning of the growing season and then receive a
box of the fresh harvest each week through the season.
Accepts CSA Bonus Bucks: Many area CSAs participate in a
GardenShare program that makes CSA affordable for incomeeligible families. For more information about Bonus Bucks, see
gardenshare.org or call 315-261-8054.

20 Local Food Guide • St. Lawrence County • 2014
T
he pleasure of eating delicious, wholesome food
belongs to everyone. St. Lawrence County is a high
needs area where one in four of our children rely on
some sort of food assistance throughout the year. If you or
your family are having trouble putting food on the table,
you are not alone, and the resources to help range from the
usual Department of Social Services to community efforts
including weekly open meals and backpack/weekend programs at schools. GardenShare’s website (GardenShare.org)
lists most of these programs in the area. If you are having a
food emergency, please call Reach Out at 315-265-2422.
The following programs help make farmers’ markets and
good food accessible to all of us.
CSA Bonus Bucks
GardenShare’s “CSA Bonus Bucks” program spreads the
benefits of Community Supported Agriculture to people living on a tight budget. The program pays $100 of the cost of a
CSA membership for limited-income households. For more
information see our website at GardenShare.org, or call us at
315-261-8054.
Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program
FMNP offers limited-income seniors and WIC participants
checks that are redeemable for fresh fruits and vegetables at
participating farmers’ markets. Besides improving nutrition
for these participants, the program is an important source
of sales for local farmers.
In St. Lawrence County, checks for seniors are distributed by the Office for the Aging (315-386-4730). Checks for
women, infants, and children are distributed at WIC clinics
by the North Country Children’s Clinic (315-386-8128).
WIC Vegetables & Fruits Checks
Moms can now use their WIC Vegetable and Fruits checks
to buy eligible fresh produce at farmers’ markets from authorized vendors.
Food Stamps/EBT/SNAP Program
Currently more than one in seven Americans receives food
stamp benefits in the U.S. Most of the Farmers' Markets in
the county accept SNAP/EBT as a form of payment as well
as debit cards. Every $1.00 spent in food stamps generates
$1.84 in economic revenue for our local economy.
For a friendly and confidential conversation about your
eligibility, call 1-800-782-0814. You can also apply online at
mybenefits.ny.gov.
Food Pantries
Each year the food pantries in St. Lawrence County distribute nearly 800,000 meals to seniors, adults, and children
who need food assistance. To find a food pantry near you,
visit GardenShare.org. The Food Bank of Central New York
also has great resources throughout the region: foodbankcny.org/get-help. 
WHAT IS A COMMUNITY-BASED FOOD SYSTEM?
G
ardenShare believes that the pleasure of eating delicious, wholesome food belongs to everyone... but
not everyone has a place at the table. Since 2003,
GardenShare has been creating innovative programs that
address food, farming, and fairness, right here in the North
Country. Our progams connect local people with local food
in an effort to ensure healthy food choices for everyone,
while at the same time, improving our local, rural, agricultural economy. The idea is to build a community-based
food system.
Production, processing and consumption tied to a geographic region
“Local food” means different things to different people in different contexts, but awareness of where food is raised helps
support the local community whenever possible. Ensuring
that the local region has all the major components of a food
system is an important element to regional food security.
Policies that promote regional food production, processing
and consumption
From federal policy that determines agriculture subsidies
and food assistance benefits, to local policies about zoning,
procurement, and health, policy plays a huge role in the
food on our tables. A local food policy council can help bring
stakeholders together so that local food system issues are addressed in ways that meed the needs of the whole community.
Widespread access to adequate, affordable & nutritious foods
It's no use having plenty of food if people don't have access
to it. When we talk about ‘access,’ we mean availability–is
healthy food available in a community; affordability–is
healthy food an affordable option in the community; and
knowledge–do the people in the community know how to
prepare food, and do they have the tools they need to do so.
Stable base of locally owned farms that use sustainable
farming practices
For our rural, agricultural economy to be healthy, farm
diversity is crucial; farms of different sizes producing different crops. When those farms are owned by people who live
in our communities, as opposed to absent landowners, their
profits circulate in our economy, and those farmowners are
better stewards of the land.
Food and agriculture related businesses that create jobs
Everybody eats food almost every day. As our agricultural
economy strengthens, so will all kinds of agriculture-related
business, creating a cycle that feeds on itself. Food and agriculture related businesses are great ways to build economy in
our rural area.
For more information and to find out how you can help build
a community-based food system in the North Country, visit
