COWTOWN COLLECTION
Newsletter of the Fort Worth Dressage Club— February, May and June, 2005
Presidents Message
by Barb Harty
Life is moving on after our Recognized Show.
Looks like final figures are close to $5,000 profit!!
Money which can go into more activities for the
Club. Another big Thank You to all who volunteered!
A braiding and driving clinic is being planned at
Carol Sewell’s place in June and possibly a Ride A
Test or some sort of educational activity in July or
August. We are also planning some trail rides at
different locations. If anyone has a speaker they
would like for our monthly meetings please let me
know so we can schedule. The equine dentist was
a big hit with lots of great information and is coming back to give us updated vaccination and
worming information….she is also a vet.
I understand that the Seat Symposium was a big
success and Carrie Ferrer—the member we sponsored—is speaking at our May monthly meeting
and will also be giving a clinic for Club members.
It will probably be planned for the fall….watch
for an announcement in the updates that are
emailed to members as well as the newsletter.
I’m sure you all remember that
the annual Region 9 meeting
for 2005 is being held in San Antonio on July 16
and 17th. If you are interested in going give me a
call. It’s always a great time and this time being
in San Antonio, it should be extra special fun as
well as very informative.
I get requests from the Eventing groups from
time to time asking for volunteers for their dressage phases. Watch for these opportunities in my
email updates. We do have some dual members
who have helped us, so if available to help please
consider it.
Be watching for information abut another clinic
September 24 and 25th that club member
Susannah Cord is organizing. She is bringing in
Walter Zettl and a leading reining trainer. More
information is to follow along with application
packets. FWDC will be a sponsor by carrying the
applications and advertising and hopefully providing some volunteers.
There are lots of clinics in the area with top
notch clinicians. If there are any you know of
that we don’t have listed in the Clinic Corner,
please let me know and I will include it in the
updates and the newsletter.
Teresa Deeter, our membership chair has provided me with a group email so I can send all
members the updates much easier. Not being the
best with computers I couldn’t get mine to
group all FWDC members together but she has
done so and it is soooo much easier for me.
There are still a few members who have not responded if they are getting the updates. So, if
you are getting two updates that are the same information, please let me know.
Summer is approaching fast….stay cool!
The Fort Worth Dressage Club is a Group Member Organization of the United States Dressage
Federation, Inc. and this organizations’ members are automatically USDF Group Members.

Sites and Sounds
What a rude shock that was! I don’t know about
you all but when my very accurate atomic clock/
thermometer registered over 100 degrees recently,
I was really put out. It was the middle of May, for
pete’s sake. Way too early for that sort of August
stuff.
My horses were out in the pasture, seeming to be
oblivious to the heat but when they came up for
evening feed...it was easy to see that they had been
effected by the intensity of sun and light winds.
To a one, they had great swathes of sweat marks
on their coats. I hadn’t put together my usual mix
of lite salt, cal mag zinc that I feed when the heat
gets up there. This is a recipe that John Lyons ran
some years ago in his Perfect Horse newsletter.
He wrote that research had shown this mixture to
be closest to replicating the chemicals that the
body loses to perspiration and is much cheaper
and easier than some of the electrolyte preparations available. If you are interested, I will gladly
share the recipe.
Now, I’m not trying to sound like your mother or
anything, but I’m gonna remind you strongly that
sunscreen in Texas is a must. I have a notch out
of my right ear to prove the point. And really,
who ever thinks about their ears getting skin cancer? But, they do...and especially when riding in
our helmets...they are just sticking right out there
to get burned. Lips and ears take a beating in the
strong light we have in our state. Please remember
to protect your skin.
My email horse friends from up north are always
teasing me about going to the skin doc to have
more divots taken out of my hide. Those lily white
ladies don’t have that problem. Of course, I can’t
resist reminding them of the pretty days we enjoy
all winter while they are up to their posteriors in
snow. One advantage to heat over snow is no
shoveling required….
“Groom your horse to win his love and
trust. Grooming daily, even if you do not
plan to ride, is the best way to build a
foundation of manners, obedience and
trust.”

Dressage Judge Natalie Lamping
Surge Protectors Anyone?
Our member Cathy Alexander submitted this article
for the newsletter recently. It sounds like an idea
whose time has come. Thanks Cathy, for sharing with
all of us.
News For & About Our Members
Recent storms left more than just some scattered rain
and downed limbs and leaves in their wake. Member
Nina Chambers house received a direct hit to their satellite dish and the lightening went all over the house
laying waste to all things electrical that we use daily.
No more phones, tv, vcr, dvd., etc. The computer lost
its modem...the control for the sprinkler system and
well went along with it. Wow! Can you imagine how
frustrating and upsetting to your normal life that would
be? Not to mention the expense and the time consuming task of getting repairs and insurance taken care of
while trying to maintain some semblance of normality.
This is the time of year to be vigilant for the possibility
of lightening strikes. Protect your possessions and
yourself., particularly if you are out on horseback when
storms threaten. Dismount and get to shelter as soon
as you are able. Don’t make the mistake of taking shelter under a tree, of course.
You don’t always have to hear thunder to be a victim
of a lightening strike. A power surge can travel on telephone lines for up to 10 miles from it’s source to your
computer modem. That comes straight from the telephone company repairman who replaced the connection box on the outside of my own house after a
storm. While we didn’t sustain damage to any of our
appliances, I had difficulty maintaining a connection to
the internet at times. The box on the outside of the
house had a part that was partially burned from a strike
somewhere in the area.
And, it could have been worse for Nina….the house
didn’t catch fire, nobody was injured and within a few
weeks...life will be back to normal. Just another one of
those life-experience things that you deal with and
learn from. Just use caution if you have to be out when
it’s storming.
“At the conclusion of the FWDC Spring Fling I & II, I
had the pleasure of driving Kem Barbosa and Natalie
Lamping to the airport. I enjoyed listening to the
judges as they ‘decompressed’ after being confined to a
judges booth during the competition!
One of the topics mentioned by Natalie Lamping (well
renowned for her objective, fair and constructive judging) was a Video Clinic campaign that she is launching.
This campaign provides an opportunity for riders of
any level to submit a thirty-minute video for analysis
and critique( without incurring the constantly rising
costs of traveling to and riding in a traditional clinic).
Natalie suggests submitting a typical work session with
your horse, a horse you are considering for purchase,
or even competition footage. Include a brief explanation of your short and long-term goals. Here is an opportunity to get the help needed to fix a problem, select a dressage prospect or refine your show-skills!
The video will be reviewed several times by Natalie,
and summarized in a written critique. A private clinic
with FEI “I” Dressage Judge, Natalie Lamping for
only $100.00!
Natalie can be contacted by phone at (630) 213-5711
or fax at (630) 213-5719.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Alexander”

It’s A Baby Boy!!!
It’s that time of year...and new baby horses are arriving
all over the place. Judi Roach recently sent a photo of
the new little one at her ranch. His name is Wolken
and he arrived on April 28th. His sire is Wolkenglanz
and mom is Diwan by World Cup.
He is cute as a button, chestnut with socks and looks
like a real sweetie. Judi attached photos of him but as
a read only attachment to her email. I can’t bring it up
to include him as a photo. Darn.
Barb Harty reported that Mary Claeys has a brand new
foal from one of my former horse children, Taffy.
Now called Ginger, she has a very dark foal with one
long stocking from Mary’s andalusian stallion Elicazar.
This is the same mare that delivered twin foals last
spring.
If there are more new babies out there, let me know. I
love to run them in this newsletter if there is any way.

Susannah Cord—Horsewoman
Susannah and her husband Alex live in the Valley
View area, where horses are, if not all, her life, most
of it. She was born in Denmark in 1971 and raised
there and in Africa and has been riding since the age
of 2, showing in dressage and jumpers since age 12.
She moved to the U.S. in 1993 to California and
trained with many leading trainers including Barbara
Silverman, Jane McLoud and Liz Searle. In Los Angeles she developed a training barn in partnership
with Mike Hennigan-trained Christine Pettit, mainly
dressage horses and jumpers, but also a diverse range
of horses from endurance horses to ropers as well as
Andalusians and Arabians.
Since 2003, she and Alex have lived in Texas where
she continues her study, training and showing dressage and jumpers as well as indulging her inner
“cowgirl”, playing with cutters, reiners and team penning. Susannah is currently working to bring natural
horsemanship to her arena through the study of the
works of Pat and Linda Parelli and Klasus Ferdinand
Hempfling, as well as continuing her own classical
dressage education though lessons and clinics, most
recently with Walter Zettl in the USDF clinic series.
To broaden her horizons, Susannah is also learning
form 14-time World Champion Reiner trainer, Craig
Johnson and cutting horse trainer Donna Phillips, both
of whom she will be working with in 2005, in combined clinics, bringing dressage to the worlds of cutting
and reining.
Currently, Susannah is also a student of The SENSE
Method, a form of therapy developed (from the Feldenkrais Method) by Mary Debono for the horse,
where the use of a gentle, specific touch can improve a
horse’s ability to bend, engage the hind end, and be
more relaxed, balanced and supple. Susannah is a distributor for the Ansur Treeless Saddle, offering the finest in treeless saddles for a variety of disciplines.
And, if you are thinking that the name Alex Cord
sounds like a movie star, you’re right. He is one and
the same fellow. Alex has an impressive bio….he has
starred in more than 30 movies and in more than 300
television shows. Also, he has just published his first
novel, based on his own life experiences, A Feather In
The Rain and it has been optioned for a feature film
production. Check it out online at www.
featherintherain.com We look forward to hearing
much from this interesting couple!

Minutes of FWDC Meeting
May 23, 2005
Szechuan Restaurant
Barbara Harty, President, presiding
Meeting called to order at 6:45 p.m.
1. Treasurers’ report
2. Membership—Teresa Deeter reported that we now have 55 paid members, which also includes
1 junior member. She has sent $51 to USDF for dues.
3. Quadrille—practice on the 28th at Mary Claeys, will include Meg Flemming, directing. The team
has been asked to do a demo ride at the Walter Zettle clinic at Star Gate. This will include some
western teaching, as well. The clinic will take place on a Saturday and a Sunday in September, with a
date to be given. This request was by Susannah Cord, one of our members. The quadrille team is a
enthusiastic group.
4. Trail Ride—May 29 at Greenwood Farm. If it looks like rain, call Barbara Harty for time. (It rained!)
5. Ride-A-Test—Meg Flemming may be judge. She would prefer July. Noble Champion Stable is
a possible venue.
6. Region 9 Summer Meeting—July 16th and 17th will be held in San Antonio. All members are
encouraged to attend, as we have one vote per person, which gives a larger voice in planning,
managing, etc. Call Barbara for information, 817-441-7820. So far, Barbara H., Dyanna L., and
Carol S. are going.
7. 2006 Recognized Show—Bob Cooper will again be our T.D. Judges are being reviewed. If anyone has
the names of really good judges, please call Barbara H. with your suggestions. The show will be either
April 8 & 9 or 9& 10, with the dates needing to be secured now. The USDF is changing the name of all
shows to LICENSED, from Recognized. Barbara, who is our show manager, has talked to the
Glen Rose people about the footing that we need for our horses. They have promised to be ready by
the Thursday of the show, so that we can make any needed improvements. We will also send copies of
a letter from the Management, explaining their concern and promise to have improved footing; this is
to go to all competitors. Some were unhappy and a few withdrew from the show. Of those who stayed,
many gave compliments, concerning our volunteers, who were caring and efficient.
8. Old Business—the Saddle Fitting Clinic arranged by Teresa Deeter, at the Horse Shoe Club.
It was given by Bob Cooper and was very informative. This was a free clinic for our members.
The club thanks Teresa.
9. New Business—volunteers were again called for the Trinity River Horse Trials, in Forest Park.
Our member, Mat Manson, is the show manager. The June Braiding and Driving Clinic will be set
by and at Carol Sewel’s place. She is to let us know about the date and time. This will be another
free clinic.

Continued Mintues from
FWDC Meeting of
May 23, 2005
10. Member News—Vicky Ferrer is now doing better. She is in therapy, has gained some weight
and is doing some gardening. With her doctors permission, she has even been able to sit on and
walk one of her older horses.
Chris Juhasz premature newborn boy is doing well and off the ventilator.
Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
Speaker Carrie Ferrer gave her impressions and experiences of riding her horse, Bingo, in the Hannes
Meuller Clinic held at Las Colinas. This clinic also included Eckart Meyner. The main emphasis was
the balance of the rider. Several of our members were able to audit this clinic and all have had positive
things to report. Donna and John Wright, longtime members of FWDC, were co-sponsors of the clinic.
Anne Gribbons Clinic Held
Those of us volunteering the weekend of the Trinity
Trials missed taking in the Anne Gribbons clinic that
was held at Jackie Nixon-Fulton’s beautiful facility near
Paradise, Texas. Paradise is a beautiful area north and
west of Springtown for those who haven’t been out
that way. Our member, Nina Chambers, audited the
clinic on both days and was kind enough to take photos and make notes on the proceedings. Her words follow:
“Just a note on how delightful the Ann Gribbons
Clinic was. She has a wonderful sense of humor, coupled with a vast depth of knowledge of riding, rider’s
position and horse movement and health.
It was amazing to watch, as she would correct a rider’s
incorrect position, how easy it became for the horse to
execute the movement at hand. One could see the
horse relax and almost hear him say….’I believe she/
he’s got it.’ And when introducing something new to
the horse, rewards were very important for even the
slightest effort on the horse’s part to produce the
movement that was being asked of him. Most loved
the sugar cubes, but one horse has a love of jelly beans.
I was also very pleased to see that Ms. Gribbon’s
knowledge of horse health and conditioning is very
astute. Her way of conveying this to the riders and
auditors was kind and without malice, yet showing a
great concern for the horses we all ride. I loved the
way she kept asking the auditors if they had questions
about the ride when it was completed. Great interaction.
So, for those of you that either were working the
Horse Trials, or just forgot, or were just too busy with
other things, you will have another chance in October
to audit or ride with Anne Gribbons.
This is one clinician that would be well worth spending
your money on.”
Anne Gribbons helps a rider with their position in
Jackie Nixon-’ lovely arena. Note the mirrors!
This, in addition to Ms. Gribbons keen eye, on just
what exercise was needed to be done to get the horse
to move ‘through’ the back, allowing the horse to carry
more weight on his haunches, thus lightening the forehand and becoming lighter in the reins. One could
hear the footfall of the horse become lighter. The rider
could then perform a better quality of transition and
movement. Something we’re all looking for, right?
