HAPPENINGS IN THE HILLS
HITS A MILESTONE!
by Janny Brizius
As we prepare this Summer 2016 edition, Happenings in the Hills has completed 25
years of bringing both locals and new folks alike the scoop on “What’s Happening’” in our
Ross, Highland, Pike County area.
It all started quite by accident. My daughter-in-law, Tina Brizius, had been doing some
business research and called me to tell me, “Janny, I’ve learned that one of the best ways to
grow a young business is by putting out a company newsletter. I think you need to do that
for Magic Waters Theatre”. Well, we were still living in Columbus, and I was trying to run
this new business by “long-distance”, and it was not easy! I really did not need something
else to do! But I thought Tina’s idea had merit, so I set about to write the newsletter. I had
barely started when I realized that this “newsletter” needed to be way more than just for
Magic Waters. It was coming out as a newsletter for the entire community, and so my little
house organ immediately became “Happenings in the Hills”! I knew I could write, but had
not a clue as to how to proceed beyond that, so it was with the help of several of my
husband, Boonie’s, professional creative artists/printer friends that I was able to make it
happen. From the very first issue, I have had tremendous approval from folks in our Southern
Ohio area. Many of them wanted to be a part of it, also–thus the advertisers!
As we actually moved down here, the production part of the magazine fell to my
daughter, Carol Mathews, who understood what I was trying to tell folks so well that she
often would tell me,”Mom, You really meant to say _______.”, and she was always right, too.
Her production skills were great, as well, and it was because of her that the magazine grew
in popularity.
Somewhere along the line, the printing part of the magazine fell to Printex in
Chillicothe, and after Carol moved out of the state, so did the production part. Printex
furnished me with some great production people through the years, but none as perfect for
the job as Jim Eichenlaub, who these days makes it happen! A few editions ago, he said to
me,”Janny, I think you meant to say _______.”,– and I think it was in the most recent edition
that as I was reading the final proof, I said to myself, “Well I completely agree with that, but
I know I never wrote it! “I called Jim, and he kind of snickered and said,”I hoped you wouldn’t
mind!” Yep, we’re a good team!
I hope you are going to enjoy this
Summer’s edition as we begin Year 26! I
keep trying to improve it, and I think Dave
Shoemaker’s new column will be
something you’ll look forward to for a good
laugh! (See the first,”The Ride” in this

HAS YOUR FAMILY SEEN “TECUMSEH!”?
by Janny
We are fortunate to have in our area the premier
outdoor drama, “Tecumseh!”. Tecumseh is to many
youngsters a “once -in-a -lifetime” experience. Young and old
alike however all appreciate this fine production–aaaand–It’s a
true story! The amphitheatre itself is outstanding, with a breathtaking
set – though the set actually sometimes expands to include the audience, as an
Indian pony and rider may just find their way right past your seat!
Recorded music by the London Philharmonic Orchestra sets the mood for this
marvelous evening of entertainment. It’s suggested that you not bring really young
children to the show, as it is fairly long and
also very loud especially in the battle scenes.
I’m thinking young people age 6 and above
will really enjoy the show.
One year we brought our entire senior
camp from CAMP at near-by Tar Hollow to
experience the show, and some 20 years
later these former campers are still telling
me what that evening meant to them!
NEED PRINTING HELP?
So many times we find that we need something important printed, but we
don’t know where to even begin that process. From personal experience this writer
can tell you HELP IS AVAILABLE! And it’s good help, too!
Printex has print shops in both Chillicothe and Waverly. At both locations
you’ll find people who can help you. From a simple business card or an invitation
right on up through a corporate brochure, they can do it all!...and in a timely
manner, too!

LAZY H CABINS
IN THE HEART OF ALL THE FUN!
Whether you have a weekend or a couple of weeks for a vacation, You’ll find
that at the Lazy H Cabins there is lots of activity available. The cabins themselves
are located adjacent to Paint Creek Lake, and by staying there you’ll also have
within a very short drive access to Rocky Fork Lake, Pike Lake, Long’s Retreat,
Tecumseh!, and many other fun activities. Of course, if you really just want to loaf
your days away, there’s not any place much better than in a rocking chair on the
porch of Lazy H! You’ll find these fun cabins on Old 50 about 4 miles west of
Bainbridge off of US Route 50. (See ad elsewhere in the Happenings.)
MIKE SEELY’S PHOTOGRAPHY
Mike Seely has again provided me with a great cover photo for this the
Summer edition. Though this is a more traditional-type photo, his passion these
days is drone photography, and his love of his media comes through in the
outstanding breathtakingly beautiful photos he is getting with his drone.
You can see examples of his work at
www.seelyportraits.com, and if you like
what you see, please give him a call at
(937) 981-3013 to make arrangements
for Mike to do a drone photo of your
farm/business or to ask him to
photograph your next big event. Of
course portrait photos are always
available by appointment. Again–(937)
981-3013. Mike’s studio is located on
Jefferson Street in Greenfield.
BOONIE’S BACK
& BETTER THAN EVER!
After a couple of years of failing health that caused
Boonie the Magician to curtail many of his activities, He is
now back to work and as good as ever!
From corporate events down to birthday parties, he
can do them all, and your folks will be amazed at his magic
and just plain amused by Boonie, himself!
Call (937)-304-0818 to check his availability for your next
special event!

INTRODUCING DAVE SHOEMAKER!
Well, probably many of you reading this already know
Dave, but he is a new friend to me, by way of face book,
I think. He is a very clever writer, and after my reading of
one of his articles on line, I knew he really needed to be
sharing his stuff with my Happenings folks! I contacted
him and asked if he’d be willing, and he told me he’d get
back to me if he found anything in his writings that he
thought might be appropriate for my readers. But I got
back to him first when I read “The Ride” on line. The main subject in the story was
a friend of his he called “Army”. I messaged him and said, ”Are we talking about
Bob “Army” Armstrong? (Turns out Army is his brother-in-law!) My connection with
Army is via Magic Waters Theatre when he played the lead role in “Natalie Needs
a Nightie” I doubt Army knew what
the role entailed when he auditioned
for the part. (See photo with Army
wearing my red negligé’!) Obviously,
he is a very self assured man,
considering he paraded all around
the stage in the nightie, risking the
teasing of all of his students at
Pickaway/Ross Career Training
Center. (The audience loved him as
did all of the cast, including the producer–ME!) So when I found someone else
poking fun at him, I had to share (Sorry Army!) Folks, I hope you enjoy “The Ride!”
THE RIDE
Sometimes incredible, amazing things happen when you least expect them.
I love summer, I love the beach, and I always spend time there during June,
July or August. Hell, sometimes an October or April visit is in order. And maybe
because summer is approaching, an unforgettable incident that happened a few
years ago recently popped into my head.
It happened in the Outer Banks. I was with some family members, including
my nephews Josh and Canon and my brother-in-law Army. We were down at The
Point, where if you have a 4-wheel drive there you can drive right out on the beach.
Let me say this straight out – if you happen to know Army this story will be
infinitely funnier, because he's at the center of the action and well, he's Army.
You see, we were all out on the ocean body-surfing that unforgettable day. We
were catching some pretty good waves, just enjoying the beautiful weather, the
sand and the surf. None of us could have possibly imagined what we were about to
witness, an event so epic in its awesomeness it's etched in my mind forever.
All of us except Army had taken some waves into the shore and were
wading/swimming back out towards the breakers when it happened. A wave was
4 Happenings in the Hills
www.magicwaterstheatre.com
hurtling towards us, much bigger than any we'd seen that day. This thing was a
mini-tsunami. We were only about a third of the way out so it was too late for any
of us to catch it. We looked for Army but he was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps he
was on the other side of the monster, we had no idea.
Then, about 5-feet in front of the wave, just under the surface and slicing
through the sea, we saw him. Army had caught the Mother of All Waves, and was
experiencing what would henceforth and forevermore be known simply as...The Ride.
I swear he looked like a torpedo, arms straight out with hands clasped above
his head, face down and ankles close together in the back. He shot by us like a
meteor as the humongous wave pushed him forward.
'Twas truly a glorious sight.
We watched, almost in a trance, as he bulleted by. It was then the wave caught
us all by surprise, tossing and flipping us over into the angry, churning sea. We
came up sputtering and coughing, desperately trying to catch another glimpse of
Army and the Body Surf to End All Body Surfs.
The wave crashed to the shore, and as it receded there lay Army, facedown in
the sand. I swear he was a good 30-feet from where the sand met the surf. For a
few seconds we thought he was dead, but then he slowly rolled over and sat up,
stunned. As he looked around, seemingly confused and disoriented, it began . . .
A slow, rhythmic clapping from people all around us on the beach. Some actually
rose from their towels to stand, to honor this man who, by performing this feat in
front of them, had surely changed their lives forever.
I think I may have even seen a man go to his knees and give the universal "I
am not worthy" raising and lowering of his hands. And in the sky, an old pelican
tipped his wings in a show of admiration and respect.
As Army stood, he simply
turned to the adoring beachgoers
and gave them a thumbs-up,
followed by a knowing nod of the
head. It was all that was needed
in that moment.
The perfect form, the
catching of a once-in-a-lifetime
wave at the precise moment, the
sight of this man-dolphin slicing
through the waves like a barracuda pursuing a grouper - these visions will be in the
minds of witnesses forever. Yes, those fortunate enough to be in attendance that
day will never forget, can never forget . . . The Ride.
Dave Shoemaker, I find is well known in this area, having been both teacher
and coach at McClain and also Paint Valley Schools.
Dave will have another story in the Fall Happenings in the Hills. This one is
called “Renegade Fall Festival of Leaves Float”. I hope you’ll look forward to it and
to many other of his tales in future Happenings.”

THE SANCTUARY
A DELIGHTFUL NEW PLACE FOR OVERNIGHT LODGING
OR FOR AN EVENT CENTER!
Happenings in the Hills is pleased to introduce you to this charming new
lodging/entertainment center. A beautiful old chapel at 6711 Dry Run Road, near
Kingston, Ohio, in Ross County has been remodled and turned into this charming
facility. The owners, Rob and Tammy Adams, say ”The Sanctuary is designed to
be your home away from home.” They continue, “ If you are having guests and
can’t house them all, they will be comfy at the Sanctuary. It is a fabulous place for
a fairy-tale wedding or for a rehearsal dinner, a bridal shower, office meetings,
birthday parties, fundraisers, etc.”
I asked Tammy to tell me a bit more
about the place as I was not going to be
able to get there before the Happenings
went to press. She answered my
questions this way: “Upstairs is a
kitchen, bath, and a large open room
with two large sectionals and two dining
tables with 14 leather chairs. There are
additional chairs and tables that can be
added. There are three bedrooms
downstairs, a bath with jacuzzi tub and
large eat-in kitchen. Two California king
beds and one futon-type double sleeper bed. Guests provide their own food through
catering or cooking there themselves. Clean towels and linens are provided at the
beginning of the stay. (There is no other maid service)” They have added a deck out
front, off of the upper floor for guests to enjoy the countryside. See this wonderful
place for yourself–search for The Sanctuary in Chillicothe, Ohio on Facebook to
see dozens of photos. You can reach Tammy at (740) 649-9163 or at

PLAN NOW TO ATTEND
THE FALL FESTIVAL OF LEAVES
I realize it’s a bit early, but you’ll be happy you marked your calendar for
October 14,15, & 16 for Bainbridge’s “Fall Festival of the Leaves”, celebrating
Southern Ohio’s outstandingly beautiful Fall foliage. If you’ve never made it down
our way for this festival, I know you are going to find it to be really special, in that
in addition to all of the expected festival “stuff’ it’s also a “Homecoming” of sorts.
It seems as though everyone who ever lived and experienced life in these parts
somehow finds a way to “Make it back home” for THE FESTIVAL. It’s the only one
worth thinking about for these folks. Charming mini-reunions can be seen taking
place all over town. Interestingly enough, though, you’ll feel right at home, too! Be
sure to get a map at the Festival headquarters–catty corner across the street from
the Dairy Queen. With this map of the various scenic loops you will be able to find
your way into the midst of all of the Fall foliage! You will find more information
about the Fall Festival of Leaves at www.fallfestivalofleaves.com.
One of the loops takes you past a unique Christmas boutique filled with handcrafted wares called “Christmas at the Cabin” which at the festival’s request now
opens a bit early in order to be a part of the festival. It also takes you past THE
HAUNTED HILLS AT MAGIC WATERS which offers a fun extension of your day’s
fun at the festival in town. Call (937) 304-0818 for more information about these
two places which are really worth your time!
